The City of Light draws millions of visitors every year with its unforgettable atmosphere.
Why Go to Paris
The delicious cuisine and vast art collections deserve some of the credit as well. The gentle River Seine meanders through the city, flanked (两侧是) by stately museums and centuries-old churches.
Paris is also a city of “many splendors,” as Ernest Hemingway recalled in his biography, “A Moveable Feast.” Visit the beloved Muse ed’Orsay, shop the biggest designers on the Champs lysées or take in the view a top the Eifel Tower.
Best Months to Visit
The best time to visit Paris is from June to August and September to October. Both summer and fall have its ups and downs. From June to August the weather in Paris is just about perfect. Unfortunately, summer is also the most crowded time and the most expensive. For lower travel rates and significantly shorter lines at attractions, plan a visit in the fall.
What to Eat
Similar to many other international cities, Paris offers a number of restaurants that serve up everything from Asian dishes to nouveaux bistro fare. And because France invented a widely adopted style of cooking, the food in Paris is good.
How to Save Money in Paris
Being here on the first Sunday of the month maybe tricky to plan, but you’ll avoid admission fees to the Louvre (罗浮宫), parts of arts centre as well as Versailles (凡尔赛) during certain months.
Walk Paris is big and shouldn’t be crossed entirely on foot, however, a number of top attractions are within a mile of one another (such as the Musée, d’Orsay, Louvre etc). If you map out ahead of time how far each attraction is from one another, you’ll likely save some subway money.

C. The city of light. D. A moveable feast.
2. When does Paris have the largest number of visitors
A. In spring. B. In summer. C. In fall. D. In winter.
3 How can you save money when travelling in Paris according to the passage
A. By purchasing discounted airline tickets.
B. By avoiding admission fees during vacation.
C. By going across the City of Light entirely on foot.
D. By finding out the distance among attractions in advance.

While in quarantine (隔离) at his home in Shanghai’s Hongkou district, Hua Rongqi, 21, a student from the University of International Business and Economics in Bejing (UIBE) , created a document on March 30 after seeing Shanghai residents asking for medical help on social media platforms.
He has not slept much since then, staying busy updating the document and cooperating with other volunteers trying to secure medical resources. By April 10, nearly 1,700 people had logged their information on the document, mostly patients with cancer, diabetes and kidney failure who needed access to treatments, according to Hua. To help relieve privacy concerns, people who sign up only provide their phone numbers and treatment needs. Once the needs are addressed, the patients’ information is deleted from the document.
More and more volunteers joined his team, and the number of volunteers quickly grew to about 200, most of whom were university students. They maintain and update the document with information such as which hospitals are still offering outpatient services (门诊服务) and how people have managed to receive medical treatment Their main tasks are to call the people in need to check their information, call workers to learn about the specific pandemic control measures in communities, and contact hospitals.
“What we are doing is providing an information center for these people, who often feel lost and helpless in such difficult situations,” said Hua. By calling hospitals and community workers and gathering information, the volunteers strive to share what they learn with those in need. “The medical needs of more than 600 people have been met thanks to the online document,” he added.
“With professional knowledge, passion, spare tie and communication skills, college students can play an important role in providing social services and helping vulnerable groups,” Hua said.
4. What are people required to fill on the online document
A. Their addresses. B. Their names.
C. Their medical needs. D. Their ID numbers.
5. What do Hua and his team do to help the patients
A. They send the patients to the hospital in person.
B. They call the workers to check their information.

B. The volunteers met with difficulties.
C. Most patients recovered because of the online document.
D. Only people with professional knowledge can be volunteers.
7. Where is the text most likely to be found
A. In a poster. B. In a biography.
C. In a newspaper. D. In an advertisement

In 1986, thirteen tombs were found in Fangmatan, an area that lies close to the city of Tianshui in China’s northwestern Gansu Province. Most were built during the Warring States Periods (475-221 B.C.). The tombs were located in Gui County, which lay within the territory of the state of Qin.
What the archaeologists found in one of the tombs was quite a surprise—seven maps that, through a fortunate coincidence, had survived for more than 2,200 years. This early date makes them the oldest known surviving maps from China.
After two years of difficult work, specialists managed to restore the maps and bring all their details back to light. The seven maps were drawn with black ink on four rectangular slabs (平板) of pine wood. The pieces all measured almost the same size. Each is about 10.5 inches long, 7.13 inches wide, and 0.43inch thick.
These maps offer positive proof of how advanced the art and science of mapping was in China at the time. They include information about both the administration and the geography of Gui County. They also include the longitude and latitude of the area, as well as the most characteristic elements that are marked on today’s maps. Less important areas are simply named and have no lines drawn around them. Also labeled on these maps are roads, mountains, and rivers.
When you take a closer look, you will note another fascinating feature. The forests in Gui County are also defined. Interestingly, we can even recognize markings that describe the types and sizes of the timber (木材) to be found in the several areas. This information offers valuable insights into what the local plant life looked like during that time.
But that is not all. In some cases, even the distances from the forests to the settlements are marked. Can you guess why Well, timber was an important commodity (商品), and it had to be transported. The Fangmatan maps include everything that was necessary for the organization of such journeys and business dealings. Taking all this into consideration, they clearly served as economic maps for traders.
8. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The function of the maps. B. The content of the maps.
C. The origin of the maps. D. The appearance of the maps.
9. Which of the following is included in these maps
A. The administration of Gansu Province. B. The longitude and latitude of Gui County.
C. The distances from the forests to the rivers. D. All the types and sizes of the timber.
10. Which word can best describe the author’s feeling about these maps
A. Amazed. B. Refreshed. C. Calm. D. Satisfied.
11. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A. To explain a research method. B. To encourage a visit to the tombs.
C. To describe the fact of a new discovery. D. To stress the importance of protecting relics.
D
From cowboy hats and cattle to barbecue and football, Texas is known for many things. One thing the Lone Star State is not known for, however, is winter weather.
That changed in February 2021, when winter storm Uri buried Texas in ice and snow. Uri lasted for a total of eight days, which was called one of the most impactful winter events in recent history, causing multiday road closures, widespread power failure, and broken pipes across Texas and surrounding states.
When weather reports this month called for another winter storm Landon the first week of February—just a year after the last—Texans were understandably nervous. This time, however, the state coped with it much better. Although there was nearly 2 inches of snow in Dallas, and a wind chill of 7 degrees Fahrenheit, the power grid was mostly spared.
Unfortunately, the same can’t be said of trees. Winter storm Landon was so cold that it caused trees across north Texas to “explode,” filling local communities with booms, snaps, and pops that sounded more like gunshots than tree branches.
The phenomenon of “exploding trees” isn’t as unusual as it sounds. Trees often freeze and burst as a result of rapid temperature changes. The great change of the temperature means that trees may not be completely dormant (休眠) or prepared for the cold. In trees that aren’t completely dormant, coat weather causes tree sap (树液) to freeze. When the water content in the cells and tissues freezes, the sap expands beyond what the tree’s bark (树皮) can contain. And so, the trees splits in places that can’t stand the pressure, creating fissures known as frost cracks.” Although trees do not actually explode into splinters when frost cracks happen, there may be loud noises and visible fractures.
From midwinter to early spring this can occur when the temperature swings, snow melts. We see it mostly on warn sunny winter days and very cold nights that dip well below freezing.
12. Wat can we learn about the winter storm Landon in Texas
A. It caused widespread power failure. B. It made people too anxious to take action.
C. It lasted for more than eight days. D. It happened at the beginning of Feb., 2022.
13. What does the underlined sentence “the same can’t be said of trees” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. The trees were well protected. B. The trees suffered a lot.
C. The trees survived the storm. D. The trees grew as well as before.
14. What caused the trees to “explode”
A. The state of being dormant. B. The rapid temperature changes in winter.
C. The great pressure from surroundings. D. Too much water in the cells and tissues.
15. What could be the best title for the text
A. The Winter Storms in Texas B. The Environment in Texas
C. “Tree Exploding” in Winter in Texas D. The Winter Events in Texas

The good news is that more people bought electric vehicles (EVs) in 2020. The bad news is that sport utility (多用途的)vehicles (SUVs) continued to grow in popularity, too. “The fall in oil consumption due to the first trend was completely canceled out by the second," said Laura Cozzi, an officer at the International Energy Agency (JEA),
Between 2010 and 2020, global carbon dioxide emissions (排放)from conventional cars fell by nearly 35 billion Lons, due to reasons such as fuel efficiency improvements as well as the switch to electric cars. Emissions from SUVs rose by more than 50 billion tons. "While the growth in EVs is encouraging, the boom in SUVs is heart-breaking," says Peters at the Cicero Climate Research Centre in Norway.
There are many reasons for the growing popularity of SUVs. For example, rising economic boom in many countries means more people are able to afford them. Some people see them as status symbols. Also, SUVs are heavily advertised by car-makers, whose profit is higher on these vehicles. Some countries, including France, have introduced plans under which more taxes are paid on heavier cars. But Peters thinks that people who are rich enough to afford SUVs won't be deterred by slightly higher taxes. "There are now some electric SUVs available, but 1 hope one day you will see more electric vehicles brought to the SUV market," says Peters.
Even if it happens, switching to electric SUVs isn't a good solution. Due to their size and bigger batteries, it takes more resources to build electric SUVs, and they consume around 15 percent more electricity. That means higher emissions unless the electricity comes entirely from renewable sources, and higher electricity demand makes it harder to green the electricity supply.
4. What can we infer from Paragraph 2
A. Scientists should devote themselves to improving fuel efficiency.
B. The emission of carbon dioxide of motor vehicles has hit a new low.
C. Electric vehicles will certainly take the place of sport utility vehicles.
D. The popularity of SUVs destroys some efforts at environmental protection.
5. What does the underlined word "deterred” probably mean
A. Blocked. B. Encouraged. C. Removed. D. Involved.
6. What is one of the reasons that SUVs are popular with consumers
A. SUVs are discounted heavily.
B. SUVs are often advertised by car producers.
C. SUVs are taxed at a lower rate in some countries.
D. SUVs consume fewer resources than other vehicles.
7. What point does the author try to make in the last paragraph
A. The electric SUVs should be made smaller and lighter.
B. The electric SUVs are a good guarantee for less pollution.
C. More electric SUVs don’t necessarily mean "environment-friendly".
D. Future electric SUVs will be powered with completely green energy.
C
Soccer has long been a popular pastime around the world. According to the Bleacher Report on the Most Popular Sports in 2020, soccer is the most followed sport in 93 countries and areas with a combined population of 2 billion. How did the most popular game on earth begin
Records of soccer games date back to more than 2,000 years ago in Greece and China, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica, Chinese cuju was one of the earliest forms of soccer, first mentioned during the Warring States Period(403-221 BC). In this ancient game, the players were not allowed the use of arms and hands. The goal was a net on bamboo sticks and the team with more goals won. The game's balls were made of leather and stuffed with hair or fur.
In 14th and 15th century Europe, “folk soccer” was usually played on Easter. Whole villages would compete against one another by kicking, throwing or carrying a leather or wooden ball across city streets, streams, fields and gateways into a “portal” of the opposing village's church. These games had few rules and were violent.
The modem form of soccer appeared in mid-19th century England. Attempts to standardize soccer's rules of play were made at the University of Cambridge as early as 1843. Twenty years later, meetings with clubs from London and surrounding counties resulted in printed rules for the game, which forbade carrying the ball.
As soccer spread throughout Europe by the early 20th century, the game was in need of international organization. This led to the founding of FIFA in 1904 with the cooperation of soccer associations from seven European countries. There are now more than 200 national soccer teams with official FIFA membership, which is more than the number of actual independent countries in the world. This is because teams that became members in the past are allowed to stay on. For example, England and Scotland are two separate FIFA members.
8. What can we learn about "Cuju" from the passage
A. It was brought in from Greece.
B. Its ball was made from bamboo sticks.
C It shared some key similarities to modern soccer.
D. It was introduced into Greece over 2000 years ago.

Warming temperatures and changing rainfall patterns may reduce diet diversity among children around the world and may even destroy efforts to improve food security. Researchers analyzed the results of health surveys from more than 107,000 children in 19 countries-in Asia; North, south-east and West Africa; as well as Central and South America.
In the surveys, the diversity of a child's diet was quantified (量化)based on their intake of foods from different food categories, including grains, milk products and meat. On average, 3.2 food categories out of 10 were consumed by the children aged 5 and under, but the situation varied from country to country. Children in Colombia ate from 4.8 food categories on average, while those in Lesotho ate from just 1.8.
To study whether climate affected the diversity of the children's diets, the researchers linked the results from each country to 30 years of rainfall and temperature data in the surveyed areas. They found that long-term higher temperatures were associated with lower diet diversity for children everywhere except Central America.
There were also shorter-term trends. In North Africa and South America, there was typically a reduction in diet diversity in countries that experienced above-average temperatures the year before the survey. In Central America and West Africa, diets typically became more diverse in countries that experienced above-average rainfall in the previous year. In some countries, the researchers say that the negative effects of climate change on diet diversity was great, and that they may even destroy efforts to improve food security.
Diet diversity is a useful standard for areas with high rates of child malnutrition (营养不良),says Daniel Mason D'Croz, an Australian researcher. "Children need a fruit or a vegetable or animal product besides the rice-that's an important thing for people to know," he says. And he also added that recent follow-up studies have provided more authoritative evidence of the effect of climate change on reducing diet diversity.
12. Why did researchers study the data of rainfall and temperature in the surveyed areas
A. To learn the diversity of a child's diet from different countries.
B. To confirm the negative effects of climate on food production.
C. To explore the effects of climate on the children's diets diversity.
D. To link the rainfall and temperature data to lower food categories.
13. What does the underlined word "they" in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. The researchers. B. Some countries.
C. The negative effects. D. Above-average temperatures.
14. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A. Children need fruits or vegetables except the rice.
B. Reducing diet diversity may cause child malnutrition.
C. Higher temperatures will make the diet more diverse.
D. Above-average rainfall leads to reducing diet diversity.
15. What could be the best title of the text
A. Children's Diet Will Be Influenced by Rainfall
B. Food Security Varies from Country to Country
C. Climate May Affect the Diversity of Children's Diet
D. Scientists Are Making Efforts to Vary Children's Diet

I’m a commercial diver for Global Divers in Louisiana. I perform underwater repairs on offshore drilling equipment.
My office lies at the bottom of the sea. I wear a suit to the office. It’s a wet suit.
This time of year the water is quite cool. So what we do to keep warm is this: We have a diesel-powered industrial water heater. This equipment sucks the water out of the sea, heating it to a delightful temperature. It then pumps it down to the diver through a garden tube, which is tied to the air tube.
I’ve used it several times with no complaints. What I do when I get to the bottom and start working is take the tube and stuff it down the back of my wet suit. This floods my whole suit with warm water. It’s fantastic because it’s like working in a bathtub.
Last week, I had a bad day at the office. When I started working, everything was going well until all of a sudden, my bottom started to itch(痒). So, of course, I scratched it. This, of course, only made things worse. Within a few seconds,my bottom started to feel a burning sensation. I pulled the tube out from my back, thinking that maybe the water was too hot, but the damage was done.
In severe pain, I realized what had happened. The hot water machine had sucked up a jellyfish(水母)and pumped it directly into my suit. When I had scratched what I thought was an itch, I was actually touching the jellyfish, and its poisonous tentacles(触角)stung me on the crack of my bottom.
I immediately informed the dive supervisor of my problem over the communicator. His instructions were unclear due to the fact that he and five other divers were all laughing loudly. 35 minutes later, I arrived at the surface. I was wearing nothing but my helmet. And my bottom was swollen.
4. What did the author think of the water heater before the incident
A. It was useless. B. It was dangerous.
C. It was satisfying. D. It needed to be improved.
5. What actually caused the author’s discomfort while working
A. A jellyfish. B. A bathtub.
C. The hot water. D. The wet suit.
6. How did the author probably feel after he went ashore
A. Excited. B. Delighted. C. Calm. D. Embarrassed.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. My Daily Work B. A Bad Day at Work
C. The Hardships of My Job D. An Office under Water

Is it to control their body temperature Save energy Find food Tiger sharks at the Ningaloo Reef are thought to search the seafloor for prey as they dive down and swim up. But could there be other reasons why the sharks often move up and down through the water column
That’s what UWA student Sammy is hoping to find out for her Ph.D. research. Sammy caught 24 tiger sharks at the Ningaloo Reef and attached tracking devices to them for up to 48 hours. The devices recorded activity rates and other data 20 times a second. The tags also contained video cameras, so Sammy could see the habitats the sharks moved through and the animals they met. She watched how the sharks reacted to prey and how the prey reacted to them.
Tiger sharks can be pretty lazy — something as simple as a turtle noticing a shark and turning away could cause the shark not to bother hunting it.
“Stomach content analysis has found their normal prey items, such as turtles, rays and fish,” Sammy said. “But have also found some really interesting things, such as license plates, cans and nails.”
Sammy said that studying tiger sharks can help her better understand the ecosystem as a whole. How they move through the Ningaloo Reef and feed can help her figure out how they might be impacting the animals beneath them in the food chain.
But hours of watching tiger sharks hunt hasn’t put Sammy off the animals at all. She said her time tagging sharks at the Ningaloo Reef was the best month of her Ph.D., if not her life. “At first, I was a bit apprehensive about it ... getting that close to some very big animals,” Sammy said. “But they were very frightened once you had them restrained alongside the boat. They’d just sit there; you’d attach the tag; you’d take the line off and they’d just swim off really calmly. It was pretty amazing to see these. They’re just absolutely beautiful animals.”
8. What can be the function of the first paragraph
A. To give an example. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To make a comparison. D. To provide the background.
9. What does Sammy want to know through her research
A. Why tiger sharks swim up and down. B. What tiger sharks like to hunt and eat.
C. How tiger sharks react in front of humans. D. Whether tiger sharks are endangered or not.
10. What can be inferred from the stomach content analysis
A. Tiger sharks live happily in the sea. B. Tiger sharks are sensitive to some food.
C. Tiger sharks are lazier than expected. D. Tiger sharks have a very broad diet.
11. What does the underlined word “apprehensive” in the last paragraph mean
A. Careless. B. Curious. C. Fearful. D. Cautious.
D
Do you sometimes find yourself drawing random patterns(图案)during meetings and lectures Some people believe it shows you aren’t listening or paying attention. However, there are studies which claim the opposite, and that doodling might actually be beneficial.
Doodling seems to be popular. In the past it was seen as a mindless activity and a product of the absentminded. However, in 2016, an article on the Harvard University website discussed the idea that random drawings may assist memory retention(保持)and concentration.
The article stresses that 26 of 44 American presidents were known to doodle, with Ronald Reagan famous for drawing cowboys. A 2009 study conducted by psychologist Jackie Andrade asked 40 people to listen to a “dull and boring” voice message. Half of the group were asked to doodle and shade in a picture. Those who did were able to recall 29% more of the information contained in the message.
Some experts believe that willingly accepting your creative and artistic sides during meetings may engage your mind. Jesse Prinz, a famous professor of philosophy, actively encourages his students to doodle. He believes that doodling is the “attentional sweet spot”.
And it might not just be good for your concentration. An artist known as Mr Doodle has made a career out of his scribbles(乱涂乱画).He sells his art online and also goes to people’s homes to decorate their walls.
It seems that random drawing to aid concentration might be becoming more of a thing. People like Sunni Brown, an advocate for doodling, teach adults how to sketch and scribble in the workplace. So, the next time you see someone randomly drawing pictures during a meeting, it might be a sign that they are listening more than you think.
12. Which phrase has the same meaning as doodling
A. A product of the absentminded.
B. Random drawing.
C. Scribbles in the workplace.
D. Drawing on the walls.
13. The author refers to Ronald Reagan in order to ________.
A. inform readers of Reagan’s ability
B. provide some background information
C. introduce a new topic for further discussion
D. give an example of the advantages of doodling
14. Why does Jesse Prinz think that doodling is the “attentional sweet spot”?
A. He thinks that it draws more attention.
B. He thinks that it promises a good career.
C. He believes that it helps to engage the mind.
D. He believes that it can bring economic benefits.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A. To state the benefits that you can get from random drawing.
B. To provide guidance on leading a random drawing life.
C. To stress the need of distraction at work and in our life.
D. To suggest a way of pursuing concentration in our lifelong career.
