Vincent Willem van Gogh is a great Dutch painter. In 2017 one of his paintings was sold for $81 million. 2021 seemed to be Vincent Willem van Gogh's year. There were at least five different exhibits in nearly 40 U. S. cities regarding his works. It's astonishing to know he sold only a few paintings in his lifetime, for only small sums of money. How did this now-famous painter fail to escape mainstream attention after his death It was probably thanks to a woman.
Six months after Van Gogh died, his beloved brother Theo passed away. This was extra tragic because Theo had expected to raise the profile of his brother's works. Fortunately, Johanna van Gogh- Bonger married Theo shortly before his death. Born in 1862, Johanna worked as an English teacher at two different girls' schools before her marriage. When Theo died, she was left with their son and a sizable(相当大的)art collection. That’s when she decided to pursue Theo’s wishes. “Johanna assumed responsibility for Van Gogh’s artistic legacy(遗产). During her lifetime, she devoted herself to raising awareness of Vincent's art and letters, " says Luijten, the author of a biography of Johanna.
Johanna broke her neck to improve Van Gogh's name. To do this, she selectively sold his works and inspired writers and art critics to write about his paintings though she was refused many times. Johanna didn't lose heart. She lent some pieces to well-known museums and organized countless exhibitions and sales. “One of Johanna's major achievements was the organization of an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in 1905, where she united no less than 484 of Van Gogh's works. A Van Gogh exhibition of this scale would never again be matched, ” Luijten explains. Another strategic move occurred in 1914 when Johanna published Van Gogh's letters. Theo had kept hundreds of letters. “This was of vital importance, as following the publication of the letters, the appreciation of Van Gogh as an artist increased further, " says Luijten.
“Despite Van Gogh's brilliance, he wouldn't be remembered to the level seen today without the influence of Johanna. Johanna van Gogh-Bonger is perhaps not a household name, but she is a force that shouldn't be underestimated in making Van Gogh well-known, "said Luijten.

Imagine walking through the first Olympic Games in Greece more than 2, 500 years ago. Now, the Greek government and Microsoft are working together to make this possible.
On November 10, 2021,they launched an immersive(沉浸式的)tour at Olympia,Greece, where the first Olympic Games were held. The new program at ancient Olympia uses augmented(增大的;扩大的)reality technology, which overlays computer-generated images on top of what users see in the real world.
Users can tour the site remotely or in person with an online presentation and a mobile app. The app uses a type of augmented reality technology. It allows the users to see virtual recreations of temples and competition areas as they walk through the ruins.
Seventh and eighth graders from a local school toured the site where ancient athletes competed in running, javelin throwing, wrestling, boxing, horse racing and other events. The students were able to flip (快速翻转)through inside and outside views. “The app is really impressive. I think it can help with teaching in schools, " said one of the students.
Microsoft is also experimenting with similar technology at the Olympic Museum in Athens,
Greece. There, visitors can use Microsoft's mixed-reality HoloLens headsets. These join visual
information on top of what the viewer indeed sees. For example, if the wearer looks up, the headset can help them see a towering statue of Zeus. Or they can take a look at the workshop used by the famed sculptor Phidias more than 2, 400 years ago.
Tech companies are racing to deliver mixed reality platforms and devices that combine the Internet with everyday experiences. This technology is part of what’s being called the metaverse(虚拟现实世界),which is an innovative online world aimed at combining real and virtual life. Today, few people use augmented reality tools like Microsoft's HoloLens headset. However, experts say they could become more normal soon.
Rose, one of the experts, said that augmented reality may further separate people in society, with each user in their own realities. But she remains hopeful, saying that augmented reality could be used as a powerful education tool. It could also help people develop new skills. “There are so many forces of potential here that I think it's mostly exciting, "she said.

Usually, when you listen to music you will expect it to be enjoyable. Music is everywhere these days. It can make an experience much more pleasurable, unless we are watching a horror movie. Then, we expect something different, or something that is also horrible!
Mark Korven writes music for movies and TV. He provided the music for a successful horror movie called The Witch .Its director, Robert Eggers, asked Mark not to use any electronic music for this movie. He wanted to create a more real sound. Following this experience, Mark began to think about how a more natural sound could be made for future horror movies. He got in touch with his good friend, Tony Duggan-Smith, a musician and maker of musical instruments. Tony camp up with something great.
Tony created a special instrument that he calls The Apprehension Engine. It looks a little like a mechanic or engineer's workshop table. The handmade instrument was inspired by something called the Soundtrack Box, invented by the Oslo-based new- music technologist Koka Nikoladze. Every section of the instrument is there to create a sound or noise that can scare you.
Mark has said that his purpose when writing music for the The Apprehension Engine is to help produce sounds that are disturbing. He showed his skills recently by giving a hugely successful performance one dark evening in Brooklyn, New York on Friday 13", of course! In the shadow of candles, members of people jumped out of their skin.(吓得魂不附体)
So, is The Apprehension Engine a musical instrument, a machine, or an engine If you believe that the purpose of music is to excite the listener, you can probably call it a musical instrument-it’s just that the sounds the instrument makes do not necessarily make you feel happy or relaxed.

A. To invent a new instrument. B. To avoid using electronic music.
C. To work with others to make music. D. To make pleasant music for his movie.

C. It looks more like a machine. D. It is made up of different instruments.
29. W hat does the underlined word “disturbing”in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Disappointing. B. Surprising. C. Worrying. D. Relaxing.
30. What's the text mainly about
A. The advantage of music. B. A special musical instrument.
