There has been a battle raging in my living room—a deep-rooted standoff (对峙) that began when I was a child of about nine. That is the age I was when my parents purchased a second-hand piano to support my continuing musical training.
Some may characterize it as a love-hate relationship, even though I believe the bond between us is more than that. Of course, on the “hate” side there were plenty of frustrating hours spent practicing, the forced performances for relatives and the trimmed fingernails. And the obligation I had to shoulder, as my family sacrificed a lot for me to have piano lessons, because I had talent. My teachers said so and, truthfully, my heart said so, too. But all too often it felt like a burden.
There was also love on that piano bench. There were times when I could feel the music ring through me. I could feel it vibrate (震动) through my fingers. The connection between two people when we were performing a duet was beautiful. When my music landed on my audience it made me want to play forever.
But my musical talent did not survive my teenage years because of my desire for freedom. When I had a home of my own, the piano mostly sat unloved or at least unused, feeling fingers on the keys only during Christmas and when my own children took piano lessons.
And yet here I am, writing about my piano. I’m about to move house and despite my emotions, there just isn’t space for the piano.
It feels like I am giving away the family pet. So here I sit playing my last tune before the movers take the piano away and surprisingly there lies a growing desire for something else. It is time to clear the air to let in a different melody. Time to say, “Thank you for being part of my life,” take a bow and leave the stage... with one final note rising up alongside the dust in a sunbeam.
4. The battle between the author and her piano started when she _______.
A. was a teenager. B. had her own home.
C. was about nine years old. D. was forced to perform for relatives.
5. Which of the following is NOT the reason for the author’s love on her piano
A. She had great artistic talent.
B. She enjoyed the vibrations through her fingers.
C. She could feel the music ring through her.
D She liked the connection with her partner when playing a duet.
6. How did the author feel when her piano was to be moved
A. Delighted. B. Contradictory. C. Indifferent. D. Sad.
7. What can be inferred from the passage
A. The piano is just a burden to the author.
B. The author’s parents wanted her to be a pianist.
C. Practising playing the piano made the author more confident.
D. The author’s parents loved her in their preferred way.

After nearly 20 years of efforts, China has built a monitoring network for endangered Siberian tigers and Amur leopards, covering more than 12,000 square kilometers in the provinces of Jilin and Heilongjiang, an expert said on Sunday.
With cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data, more than 4,000 infrared (红外线的) camera video clips of tigers and more than 600 clips of leopards were recorded by a team led by Jiang Guangshun, deputy director of the Feline Research Center of the Natural Forestry and Grassland Administration.
“By comparing the data of tigers and leopards of China and Russia from 2013 to 2015, we have confirmed that 17 tigers and 42 leopards are shared populations of both China and Russia,”Jiang said at the International Forum on Tiger and Leopard Transboundary Conservation which kicked off on Sunday in Harbin, Heilongjiang province. “The ecology has greatly improved since the natural forest protection project started in 1998, and all commercial logging has been stopped, which helped to protect tigers and leopards,”he said.
“However, we still face great challenges,”he said. “The distribution pattern of the two species suggests that the protection of the tiger and leopard requires the establishment of a network of protected sites, the construction of international and domestic corridors and the formation of a permeable landscape. It needs attention and support from all over the world. ”
“Military fences, transportation facilities and farmland in habitats have a strong impact on tigers’ free migration in different areas in China and cross-border areas between China and Russia. Living in small and isolated areas may cause more inbreeding, which can be a factor in their decline in immunity,” Jiang added.
Focusing on big cats around the world, especially tiger and leopard populations, the two-day event attracted more than 300 representatives from 19 countries. Representatives discussed monitoring technology, restoration of populations and habitat areas, landscape resource allocation in protected areas, conflict resolution and other related technical and policy issues.

A new mini-program in WeChat is relieving people from the pain of long queues at nucleic acid testing sites in Beijing’s Zhongguancun. The mini-program, designed by the Institute of Automation at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, became available to the public via WeChat on Monday. It shows the locations of testing sites, site testing window numbers, opening times, the real-time number of people in line and estimated wait times.
Waiting in line for a nucleic acid test used to be an hour-long task in some more densely populated areas in Zhongguancun. “There were usually hundreds of people lining up at the site near my company building because residents and people working in the vicinity all came to that site,” said a man surnamed Qi who works at a science institute in the subdistrict. “I can’t choose my time to do the test, but now with the mini-program I can select a site with fewer people waiting and get tested within just a few minutes,” he said.
Li Bingduo, director of Zhongguancun’s public security office, said that despite there being enough sites and a quick testing process, efficiency is still low. That’s why they came up with the idea for the mini-program. “Waiting in long lines may interrupt people’s work and students’ online classes. The problem has to be solved by smoother communication channels. Otherwise, residents randomly choose nucleic acid locations and time periods, resulting in the uneven distribution of crowds. Sites with more people have to be equipped with more manpower and material resources and potential safety hazards loom when people gather in large crowds,” he said.
Li’s team put out a request to see if any company in the subdistrict could find a solution to this problem and the Institute of Automation took up the baton. Wen Dayong, an associate researcher with the institute, and two of his colleagues completed the mini-program by Monday after only receiving the task on Friday night. “We burned the midnight oil to get the program done. We wanted to make it available to the public as soon as possible,” he said.
12. What can we know by using this new mini-program
A. The number of people infected. B. Opening times of every company.
C. Subway stations across Beijing. D. The locations of testing sites in Zhongguancun.
13. Which of the following may Li Bingduo agree with
A. More testing sites should be put into operation.
B. Waiting in long lines is unavoidable in Beijing.
C. Large crowds at testing sites results in hidden risks.
D. Students shouldn’t engage in online classes.
14. What does the underlined phrase in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Burned up. B. Stayed up. C. Used up. D. Made up.
15. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text
A To make Zhongguancun known to the world. B. To introduce a new WeChat mini-program.
C. To help residents to choose testing sites wisely. D. To tell us how to develop a new mini-program.

A 70-year-old woman wins hearts with her energetic workouts on Douyin, He Qi reports in Shanghai.
Videos on the social networking platform Douyin—also known globally as TikTok—that show men and women with perfect physiques working out or providing fitness tips are commonplace.
Trying to stand out from the crowd amid a flood of such videos can often be difficult but a relatively new account, which has only been active since last year, has managed to do easily. The fitness instructor behind this account is not a young woman with a slim, toned figure that would leave viewers green with envy.
The star here is 70-year-old Chen Jifang, a Shanghai resident with 3 million likes on her Douyin videos. She was once even featured on a reality show on China Central Television. According to her trainer, who helped to manage the Douyin account, Chen attracted more than 400,000 followers within just a few months.
“The main group that I wanted to encourage was people at ages 30 to 50,” says Chen. “I think they will be motivated to work out in the gym after seeing that a granny like me can. The message I want to convey is that it is never too late to pursue good health.”
For Chen, her passion for exercising was born out of a need instead of a desire to become famous. According to Chen, her health had been poor since she was a child. She even had to give up her job after giving birth to her daughter because her health was severely affected by the pregnancy. “In the past, whenever I felt uncomfortable, I would lie at home for an entire day,” says Chen, who used to be a saleswoman in a local company before retirement.

C. Chen's Douyin account is managed by her trainer.
D. It is just a few months since Chen opened her Douyin account.

Weaving environment-friendly materials into beautiful clothing is normally brands' first step toward achieving sustainability.
Allbirds is a shoe brand founded in 2016 in New Zealand, which just entered China two years ago. Many influencers are fans of the brand, including Larry Page, the co-founder of Google, Dick Costolo, the former CEO of Twitter, actress Emma Watson, and actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
The brand chooses natural and sustainable wool from merino sheep as the main raw material, and it costs 60 percent less energy than producing typical synthetic (合成的) shoes; it sources tree fiber involved from farms in South Africa, where people minimize fertilizer and irrigate the land with rainfall, directly saving 95 percent water and cutting carbon footprint in half; sugarcane (甘蔗) involved is sourced from southern Brazil, which relies on rainwater as well.
The brand received Forest Stewardship Council certification, approving that it sources materials that meet strict standards to protect forests, and the animals and people who depend on them.
During China Fashion Week, which was recently held, an increasing number of Chinese brands showed their practice of sustainability. Demain presented the potential of plant-based regenerated fiber; Damowang formed recycled PET fabric into clothes, which cause 32 percent less carbon emission while producing comparing to normal PET fabric; I-La introduced new collection made from biodegradable (生物降解的) natural materials; Chicco Mao called attention to the catastrophic impact of global warming on coastal ecology through design.
According to the report, although the number of mass market retailers, who make products from sustainable materials, stays low, it has increased fivefold in the last two years.
Yan Yan, the head of Responsible Supply Chain Association, talked about sustainable fashion at China Fashion Summit on March 27. I once asked a seeming confident man what his biggest insecurity or fear was. To my surprise, he answered falling in love right now. He said he feared love because his number-one priority was to maintain a concentrated mentality focused to better himself academically career-wise and altogether. You many say this is an excuse for not falling in love, but new research indicates that this man's reasoning might actually be accurate.
A study was conducted by researcher Hank Van Steenburgen along with colleagues from Leiden University and the University of Maryland on 43 participants who were in new romantic relationships, meaning six months or less. They were asked to perform specific tasks such as separating relevant and irrelevant information. The result: the participants' ability to concentrate and perform tasks were not present.
Steenburgen shared in his study: high levels of passionate love of individuals in the early stage of a romantic relationship are associated with reduced cognitive control. Also adding: it could be that the obsessive nature of passionate love imposes important hardship on performing well in tasks that require self-control.
Rae Padilla Francoeur, author of the book Free Fall: A Later-in-Life Love Affair, felt extremely head-over-heels for her current mate. Regardless of how emotionally ecstatic she was, the newfound love took a terrible toll on her health. She noted becoming lightheaded, losing weight, not being able to fall asleep for days or being able to concentrate on eating.
Psychologist Dorothy Kenneth called this "limerence", the obsessive state we are in, where we let work, friends, responsibilities and even ourselves slide so that we can satisfy our overly enthusiastic need for our new partner.
Jennifer Nelson of Today.com say, "You lose your concentration. You many think very clearly, but you can't think about anything but him or her. It's the dopamine that gives you that obsessive focus. Romantic love is just an obsession, and you are focused just not on work or you to-do list."
12. What does the research indicate
A. Many people fear passionate love for some reason.
B. New love can have complex effects on individuals.
C. Romantic love takes a terrible toll on people's health.
D. Falling in love makes you less productive.
13. Who could be one of the 43 participants
A. Steenburgen. B. Rae Padilla Francoeur.
C. Dorothy Kenneth D. Jennifer Nelson.
14. What is the meaning of the underlined word
A. Eager and exhausted. B. Obsessed and worried.
C. Happy and excited. D. Enthusiastic and anxious.
15. What is the writer's purpose in writing the passage
A. To offer information. B. To give advice.
C. To report events. D. To analyse reasons.

2020 is special. When we dip into the model “suspended class, ongoing learning” during the pandemic(大流行)of NCP, have you thought of the inventors that supply us the convenience on the computers Here, let’s know a respectable person who left us a few months ago.
Larry Tesler: computer scientist ,an icon of early computing, died at the age of 74 in this spring. Mr Tesler started working in Silicon Valley in the early 1960s, at a time when computers were inaccessible to the vast majority of people. It was thanks to his innovations ,which included the “cut”, “copy” and “paste” commands that the personal computer became simple to learn and use. Xerox, where Mr Tesler spent part of his career, paid tribute to him. “The inventor of cut/copy & paste, find & replace, and more, was former Xerox researcher Larry Tesler,” the company tweeted. “Your workday is easier thanks to his revolutionary ideas.”
Mr Tesler was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1945, and studied at Stanford University in California. After graduating, he specialised in user interface(界面) design, that is, making computer systems more user-friendly. He worked for a number of major tech firms during his long career. He started at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (Parc), before Steve Jobs invited him for Apple, where he spent 17 years and rose to chief scientist. After leaving Apple he set up an education firm, and worked for brief periods at Amazon and Yahoo.
In 2012, he told the BBC of Silicon Valley: “There’s almost a custom -- after you’ve made some money, you don’t just retire, you spend your time funding other companies.”
“There’s a very strong element of excitement, of being able to share what you’ve learned with the next generation.” he added.

By 11:00, Gopamma knew something was wrong. Her husband, Hanutha, should have returned from collecting firewood an hour before.Gopamma sent for her son, who gathered a search party and headed to Bandipur Tiger Reserve, a nearby national park in south-western India. Just inside the forest, they discovered Hanutha’s half-eaten remains. The tiger that killed him was still sitting next to the body.
In the face of her husband’s death, Gopamma struggled not only with grief but economic hardship. Her son had to drop out of university. “My life was much better when my husband was alive,” she says. “My older son could have studied, but now both of my sons have to work. I feel insecure and dependent.”
Despite all this, Gopamma feels no hate toward the tiger that killed her husband. Like many Hindus in India, she views humans and creatures, each with an equal right to existence. Her husband’s death, she says, has nothing to do with the fact that the government is trying to save tigers: “This was my fate.”
Rural Indians are unique in the world for their high tolerance for co-existing with potentially deadly wildlife. “You don’t find this in other cultures,” says Ullas, a biologist at the Wildlife Conservation Society and a leading expert on tigers. “If this kind of thing happened in Montana or Brazil, they’d wipe out everything the next day.”
The country holds just 25% of total tiger habitat, but accounts for 70% of all remaining wild tigers, or around 3,000 animals today.Success does not come without cost, however. They still have a lot of difficulties with tigers breaking into human-dominated places in certain parts of India, livestock(牲畜) are killed and sometimes so are people.
Some animal activists think that there are too few tigers left in the wild ,so even one shouldn’t be killed.Tigers are treasures, we’d better live with them together.
8. Which of the following words can replace the underlined word “remains” in the first paragraph
A. ashes B. body C. rest D. flesh
9. How was Gopamma’s life after her husband’s death
A. She suffered financial difficulties.
B. Her life was much better than before.
C. She hated the tiger and was in deep sorrow.
D. She became independent and supported her sons with their studies.
10. The sentence “You don’t find this in other cultures.” in the fourth paragraph implies ______.
A. Other cultures keep tigers as pets.
B. Other cultures can kill tigers casually.
C. Rural Indians can bear the killing caused by the tiger.
D. People wipe out the tigers once they see them in Montana or Brazil.
11. What can we know from the article
A. Gopamma’s two sons used to study in the university.
B. Tigers often break into indians’ houses and kill the villagers.
C. Gopamma knew something was wrong in the early morning.
D. Hanutha was found killed in the forest in a national park.
D
If you live in Shanghai, you might have to take a “lesson” in sorting garbage, as the city recently introduced new garbage-sorting regulations. It’s now required that people should sort garbage into four categories, namely recyclable, harmful, dry and wet waste. However, if people fail to sort their garbage properly, they can be fined up to 200 yuan. More cities are introducing similar regulations, following the practice in Shanghai. By the end of 2020, garbage-sorting systems will have been built in 46 major Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shenzhen, reported People’s Daily.
According to a study by the Policy Research Center for Environment and Economy, under the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, over 90 percent of the public believe that garbage sorting is important for the protection of the environment. However, garbage sorting is still a big problem in China. Only 30 percent of participants said they think they are adequately sorting their trash, the study noted.
According to Xinhua News Agency, it’s partly because many people lack the willingness to sort their own waste. In the past, some previous garbage regulations didn’t give clear fines for people who failed to sort garbage. “It’s a must to have a legal guarantee to promote garbage sorting.” Liu Jianguo, a professor from Tsinghua University, told China Daily. He also added “the importance of the new regulations in Shanghai is to change the past voluntary action into compulsory action for everyone”
Aside from China, many other foreign countries have also introduced garbage-sorting regulations. In Japan, waste sorting has become a basic survival skill, reported Xinhua. There is a fixed time for disposal of each kind of garbage and littering can result in high fines and even jail time. In Germany too, people are asked to sort waste into specific categories, reported HuffPost. For example, in Berlin, people have yellow bins for plastic and metals and blue bins for paper and cardboard.
12. What can we learn from paragraph 1
A. People will be fined not less than 200 yuan.
B. Shanghai works as a pioneer in garbage sorting.
C All the cities use the same regulations as Shanghai.
D. Poisonous waste belongs to four categories in sorting.
13. Which statement is true according to the passage
A. Not all the public attach importance to garbage sorting.
B. Garbage-sorting system have been built in 46 major cities.
C. People in Shanghai aren’t fined clearly if they fail to sort garbage now.
D. People may be put in prison because of littering in Germany.
14. What can be inferred from Liu Jianguo’s words
A. Legal guarantee is a must to promote garbage sorting.
B There is a growing concern over garbage sorting worldwide.
C. He supports the legal regulations in garbage sorting.
D. The sorting action should be changed from compulsory to voluntary.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A Hard to Recycle Appropriately
B. Serious Waste Problems in Big Cities
C. Garbage Sorting Practice in Shanghai

根据文章第一段“There has been a battle raging in my living room—a deep-rooted standoff (对峙) that began when I was a child of about nine. That is the age I was when my parents purchased a second-hand piano to support my continuing musical training.(我的客厅里一直有一场激烈的斗争——一场根深蒂固的对峙,始于我大约九岁的时候。就在我这个年龄,我的父母买了一架二手钢琴来支持我继续接受音乐训练。)”可知作者和她的钢琴之间的斗争始于她大约九岁时。故选C项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据我在第二段“And the obligation I had to shoulder, as my family sacrificed a lot for me to have piano lessons, because I had talent. My teachers said so and, truthfully, my heart said so, too. But all too often it felt like a burden.(还有我必须承担的义务,因为我的家人为我上钢琴课牺牲了很多,因为我有天赋。我的老师也这么说了,说实话,我的心也这么说了。但这常常感觉像是一种负担。)”以及第三段“There was also love on that piano bench. There were times when I could feel the music ring through me. I could feel it vibrate (震动) through my fingers. The connection between two people when we were performing a duet was beautiful. When my music landed on my audience it made me want to play forever.(在钢琴长凳上也有爱。有时候我能感觉到音乐在我体内回荡。我能感觉到它通过我的手指震动。当我们表演二重唱时,我们两个之间的关系很好。当我的音乐落在我的观众身上时,它让我想永远演奏。)”可知作者的天赋在作者看来是一种负担,而不是喜欢钢琴的原因,其他三项都是作者喜欢钢琴的原因。故选A项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“It feels like I am giving away the family pet. So here I sit playing my last tune before the movers take the piano away and surprisingly there lies a growing desire for something else. It is time to clear the air to let in a different melody.(感觉就像我把家里的宠物送人了。在搬家工人把钢琴搬走之前,我坐在这里弹奏最后一支曲子,令人惊讶的是,我对其他东西的渴望越来越强烈。是时候净化空气,让不同的旋律进入了。)”可知作者对于即将要搬走的钢琴既有像送走家庭宠物般的不舍,同时又有着对于新东西的渴望,所以心情是矛盾的。故选B项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“That is the age I was when my parents purchased a second-hand piano to support my continuing musical training.(就在我这个年龄,我的父母买了一架二手钢琴来支持我继续接受音乐训练。)”以及第二段“the forced performances for relatives and the trimmed fingernails.(亲戚面前的强迫性表演和被修剪过的指甲)”“And the obligation I had to shoulder, as my family sacrificed a lot for me to have piano lessons, because I had talent.(还有我必须承担的义务,因为我的家人为我上钢琴课牺牲了很多,因为我有天赋。)”以及“But all too often it felt like a burden.(但这常常感觉像是一种负担。)”
