As a student, I was most afraid to answer questions in class, and I found that the students around were just like me. At the beginning of each class, when the teacher asked a question, I always lowered my head because I was afraid that the teacher saw me.
One day, in a foreign language class, Mr.Black gave us a lesson. He wanted us to be active in class, so he asked us some questions, but no one answered. “Let me tell you a story first,” he said.
When I came to the United States to study, the university often invited famous people to make speeches. Before the beginning of every speech, I found an interesting thing. The students around me always took a cardboard folded in half, wrote their names in bold with the most eye-catching color, and then placed the cardboard on the seat. So when the speaker needed the answers from the students, he could see and call a listener’s name directly
“I couldn’t understand that. My classmate told me the speakers were all top people, who meant chances. When your answer was to his surprise, it meant he might give you more chances. In fact, I really saw a few students got great chances because of that.”
After listening to the story, I understood that the chance will not find you itself. You must show yourself all the time so that you can find a chance on the card.

A. He got them from the computer.
B. He saw the card boards on the seats.
C. He asked the students for their names.
D. He got them from the name list on the teacher's desk.
( ) 4. What does the underlined word “eye-catching” in Paragraph3mean
A. 引人注目的 B. 眼睛疼痛的 C. 目光呆滞的 D. 泪眼朦胧的
( ) 5. What does the writer mainly tell us

C. Attracting others’ attention is interesting. D. Showing yourself bravely can win chances.

Have successful people ever felt sad Do they have any “secrets” to success The answers to these questions can be found in US president Barack Obama’s “back to school” speech. Here is an excerpt (摘录) from his speech.
I know that sometimes, you get the sense that you can be rich and successful without any hard work-that your ticket to success is through rapping(饶舌音乐) or basketball or being a TV star, when chances are, you’re not going to be any of those things.
But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won’t love every subject you study. Not all the homework will seem completely important to your life right this minute. And you may not succeed at everything the first time you try.
That’s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most failures. JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was rejected 12 times before it finally came out. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots during his career. But he once said, “I have failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” These people succeeded because they understand that you can’t let your failures beat you-you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time.
No one’s born being good at things. You become good at things through hard work. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit (承认) when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.
And when you’re struggling (奋斗), even when you’re discouraged (泄气), and you feel other people have given up on you-don’t ever give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.
( ) 11. Why does Barack Obama mention JK Rowling and Michael Jordan in the fourth paragraph
A. To compare these two famous persons.
B. To explain that writing and sports are difficult skills.
C. To show that the two persons were treated unfairly.
D. To prove that failure is the mother of success.
( ) 12. Which of the following statements is NOT true
A. No one can be successful without working hard.
B. Failure can be good if you treat it in a right way.
C. Those who believe in themselves shouldn’t ask others for help.
D. One should try his best to make his dream come true.
( ) 13. Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined sentence
A. One should change his mind when others give honest advice to him.
B. One should believe in himself no matter what difficulty he is faced with.
C. One doesn’t have to work hard when he has failed several times.
D. One doesn’t have to take others’ advice when they get away from him.
( ) 14. Who is JK Rowling
A. The present’s wife. B. It may be a writer’s name.
C. A basketball player. D. Harry Potter’s mother.
( ) 15. Which is the best title of the passage

Hello, everyone! My name is Lydia. Today, I’m very glad to share my ideas with you.
I love learning foreign languages. In fact, I love it so much that I like to learn a new language every two years, and now I’m working on my eighth one.
When people found that out about me, they always asked me, “How do you do that What’s your secret ” They wanted to know the secret of polyglots—people who speak a lot of languages. And that made me wonder too. What do polyglots have in common What is it that helps polyglots to learn languages so much faster than other people I decided to meet other people like me and find that out.
And so I met Benny from Ireland, who told me that his method was to start speaking right away. He learned a few sentences from a travel book and went to meet native speakers and started talking with them. He didn’t mind making even 200 mistakes a day.
I also met Lucas from Brazil who had a really interesting method to learn Russian. He simply added a hundred random (随机的) Russian speakers on Skype as friends, and then he opened a chat window with one of them and wrote “Hi” in Russian. And the person replied, “Hi, how are you ” “Lucas copied this and put it into a text window with another person, and the person replied, “I’m fine, thank you, and how are you ” Lucas copied this back to the first person, and in this way, he let two strangers have a talk with each other without knowing about it. And soon he would begin chatting with Russians himself, because he had so many of these talks that he found out how the Russians usually start their talks. What a creative method, right
And then I met polyglots (多语种者) who always started by imitating (模仿) sounds of the language, and others who always learned the 500 most used words of the language, and yet others who always started by reading about the grammar. Everybody seems to have a special way to learn a language, and yet we all come to the same result of speaking several languages very well.
And as I was listening to these polyglots telling me about their methods, I suddenly realized that the one thing we all had in common was that we simply found ways to enjoy learning languages. All of these polyglots were talking about language learning as if it was great fun. Then, I understood that this was how I learned languages myself. So if you also tried to learn a language and you gave up, give it another try! Thank you!
( ) 16. The underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 means __________.
A. the person who is like Lydia
B. working on the eighth language

D. the secret of learning languages by polyglots

A. learning the most used words B. talking with native speakers
C. reading different kinds of books D. imitating the sounds of the language
( ) 18. Which of the followings is TRUE about Lucas
A. He spent several years studying Russian online.
B. His good friends taught him how to speak Russian.
C. His method of learning Russian was interesting and creative.
D. He learned Russian by writing letters to his Russian pen friends.
( ) 19. What characteristics do polyglots have in common
A. They are afraid of making mistakes.
B. They learn foreign languages in the same way.
C. They enjoy themselves learning foreign languages.
D. They like making foreign friends while learning languages.
( ) 20. The main purpose of Lydia’s speech is to __________.
A. share ideas about learning foreign languages
B. show how she can speak eight foreign languages

English 6. __________ (be) popular for many years. But for many learners, learning English is not easy, but don’t worry. We have some suggestions for you.
Firstly, some second language students don't walk around with grammar books in their pockets, they carry dictionaries. Good second language learners, writers, speakers, and listeners have a large vocabulary (词量) under their control. Second language researchers are starting to understand that grammar isn't the most important part of second language study; vocabulary is the key to learning a language.
But which words should students learn English has a very large vocabulary. In a language like English, even native speakers (母语使者) know only a part of all the words. So second language learners need 7. __________ (realize) that they will never learn all the words, so they need to spend their time 8. __________ (learn) the most useful ones.
Secondly, reading is helpful in learning a second language.Reading improves students’ speaking, writing, grammar, and vocabulary skills. Students who read a lot learn what is correct and what is not correct.
Improving the second language skills 10. __________ (require) extensive reading (泛读). Extensive reading requires reading widely all the time--at least 30 minutes a day. Students read things which interest them. However, the important point is that it should be easy enough to enjoy.
