Protecting the Habitats of Chimpanzees
Chimpanzees are not only social animals living in communities and working together, but they are smart in many different ways. For over 40 years, people have been studying chimps both in the wild and in captivity. One thing they have learned is that chimpanzees and their natural habitats—or where they live in the wild—need to be protected.
In 1960, a researcher named Jane Goodall began to live with and study wild chimpanzees in Africa. She learned that they are highly intelligent animals that communicate with gestures and physical contact. They make tools to find food, they possess innate decision-making skills, and they make choices about which groups to join and what foods to eat. Chimps cooperate to hunt and often share the food they have caught. In captivity, where they live in zoos and science centres, they can be taught American Sign Language so that they can communicate with their hands. There have even been experiments which show that a few chimpanzees have learned to use computers and to play games! Some scientists argue that chimpanzees can show emotions such as happiness or sadness.
Although chimpanzees are impressive and intelligent animals, their safety is in danger every day. In the wild they can be found in 21 different African countries, living in forests. Chimpanzees are able to adapt(适应) to changes in their environment. They can move to a new place, make new nests, and find new foods. Yet people are destroying their natural habitats. By cutting down trees for firewood and using the space to build houses, humans leave chimpanzees with smaller areas to live in.
Chimpanzees are in danger, and all eyes should be on them. Fortunately many organizations and researchers have started to take steps to protect them. Everyone should be aware of their work and it is important to help these amazing animals.

People are interested in animal communication and scientists have done lots of researches on this subject.
Most animals always use body language to communicate. If cats look and blink(眨眼)at you slowly, which shows their love to you, you can also do this to show your love. When they sit with tails around themselves, they’re happy. If they feel scared, their tails may look like the end of toilet brushes. When they put ears back, they are a bit mad. Birds can also show feelings through eyes and feathers. If birds make their pupils(瞳孔)large and small from time to time, this can be a sign that they are excited or scared or angry. Birds will ruffle(弄乱)their feathers when they clean themselves. However, if their feathers remain ruffled, it may mean they are ill. You’d better take them to see a veterinarian in an animal hospital.
Some animals communicate by smell. Dogs are famous for this. They can learn about something by smelling. They can find missing people by using their fantastic sense of smell. They have helped the police for a long time. Mice have an excellent sense of smell, too. Scientists even train them to find landmines(地雷).It is found that even ants use smell, they use smell to tell other ants where the food is.
Frogs and insects communicate with sounds. Usually the “gentlemen” make sounds to invite the “ladies”. Whales and elephants also use sounds to communicate, these sounds can travel very far through water or the ground, but it is not possible for humans to hear some of the sounds.

We often see butterflies around us. But do you know that a butterfly passes through four stages of life At each stage, it looks different.
◆Egg. A female butterfly lays eggs. She lays her eggs on a leaf and she lays the eggs really close together. The eggs are really small and round. After about five days, a tiny worm-like creature will come out from the egg.
◆Larva. Out of the egg comes a caterpillar(蝴蝶的幼虫), or a larva. The caterpillar is hungry once it has come out. It starts to eat leaves and flowers. A caterpillar grows really fast. This is because it eats a lot. It gives up its skin four or five times as it grows.
◆Pupa(蛹). Weeks pass. The caterpillar turns into a pupa. It is mostly brown or green. It is the same colour as the things around. Other animals cannot see it. This protects it and keeps it from getting hurt. A hard shell called cocoon forms. Inside, the pupa grows wings and other parts.
◆Adult. The adult butterfly breaks out of the cocoon. It will be ready to start flying. It looks for food. It will begin to look for a mate. Soon, the female will lay eggs.

There are more than 20,000 kinds of butterflies. They come in many colours and sizes.
