One day, Anna Du was walking along Castle Island’s beach. She found there were lots of plastic pieces in the sea and some were too small to pick up. She began to think about how to solve the problem.
First, she did a survey. The result showed there were already 150 million tons of plastic in the sea, and every year there would be another 8 million tons. She realized something must be done. So she decided to invent a robot that could work under water. She tried again and again. At last her ROV came out. It could move through water and pick up plastic pieces, especially the tiny ones.
With this ROV, Anna Du took part in the Broadcom Masters competition which is one of the top STEM competitions. It’s for young students around the world. This year, more than 5,000 students were interested in the competition, but only a few got the chance. Anna Du’s ROV caught a lot of attention. It had a camera with three different kinds of lights which could find plastic pieces easily. Dana Yoerger, an expert, said, “The ROV is nicely done for a 12-year-old girl. It’s very clever.”
In fact, Anna Du is always learning to solve the world problems and her parents are always supporting her. At the age of five, she began to go to workshops to learn engineering skills. When she was asked about the future plan, she said, “I want to be an engineer because I like building things. I think many world problems can be solved with new inventions. In recent history, there have been some amazing inventions which have changed our lives. The plane has made international travel faster and easier. The Internet has brought people closer. And you must know the names of some famous inventors like Henry Ford and Steve Jobs, But there are many everyday objects which you probably don’t notice and you don’t know who invented them Take Nils Bohlin for example, who invented the modern-day car seat belt (安全带).
Before 1959, only two-point seat belts were available, and the only people who often wore them were race car drivers. The two-point seat belt couldn’t protect passengers from internal juries (内伤) during serious car accident.
In 1958, Bohlin joined Volvo Car Corporation as a safety engineer. He came up with the three-point seat belt to keep passengers from flying out of their cars during collisions. The three- point seat belt used one strap (带子) across the chest (胸部) and another across the legs and then the two joined at the same place. Amazingly, this was a very simple idea which no one had tried before.
The three-point seat belt was introduced in Volvo cars in 1959. For more people’s safety. Volvo made the new seat belt design (设计) available to other car makers for free. Since then engineers have worked to improve the three-point seat belt, but the basic design remains Bohlin’s.
At the time of Bohlin’s death in September 2002, Volvo said that the seat belt had saved more than one million lives since it was introduced.

In the US and Britain, the slogan (标语) around colleges was “Save water. Shower with a friend.” Now, Wuhan University has come up with another system for the campus bathhouse. Before entering the bathhouse, students pay 1 yuan per minute with money or their student ID cards. The clock starts moving the minute the tap is turned on. It stops when a button (按钮) is pressed for soap. An IC card reader at each tap shows the time. No money, no water. The benefit of the new system can be seen with the old system, which charged 1 yuan for each person regardless of time in the shower. The university used about 320 tons of water daily under the old system, but only 160 tons now.
Students have different opinions about the new system. Some say it is bad because bathing has become a race. Many people using it for the first time are not sure how long they need to shower. Some might be embarrassed if their time is up and they’re still covered in soap. They have to ask the bathhouse worker to help them buy extra (额外的) time.
“It’s a fault in the system that you cannot buy extra time on the ID card,” said Ren, a freshman in Wuhan University. The university is also considering some students’ suggestions that they may be allowed to pay after they’ve finished the shower. But many students say the system helps them develop a water-saving sense.
Some even used the hot water to wash their clothes. “In my experience, 10-20 minutes is enough, said Dai Zhihua, a third-year student who usually spends 8 minutes.
A similar system has been installed (安装) in other universities. Shanghai Normal University introduced it at its Fengxiang Campus in September. The bathing fee there is 0.2 yuan per minute. One male student responded by setting a record with a two-minute shower.
( ) 16. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true
A. Students pay for the amount of time they want in the shower.
B. The clock times all through while the student is bathing except when the bather stops for soap.
