One night, a seriously injured patient was transferred to hospital in Nanjing, Jiangsu, from Anhui province. The patient was hearing-impaired, so it was difficult for medical workers to communicate with him.
At the same time, Chen Xin was studying at the library. He is a senior student of architectural engineering technology in Nanjing Polytechnic Institute. The 20-year-old is also a sign language interpreter. He immediately rushed to the hospital, which is next to his college, after receiving an urgent call. Chen helped the patient communicate with medical staff until the patient was released from the hospital.
“In many cases, some hearing-impaired people have to delay seeking medical treatment for various reasons, which brings health risks and property losses to the group,” said Chen.
Chen knew some deaf friends, but they can only communicate with each other by typing on the mobile phone. This encouraged Chen to learn sign language. In 2018, Chen, then a senior high school student, attended a program by Nanjing Normal University of Special Education to learn from professionals and was certified (认证) as a sign language interpreter.
“Finger flexibility is a key,” Chen said,“I couldn’t make precisely harmonious movements of my fingers at first.” So Chen took part in activities for deaf people to practice more.
Every kind of language has its own grammar system. So does sign language, “Its word order is different from Chinese or English,” Chen said. For example, if you want to say “I love you”, you need to sign “I you love”. “I spent a lot of time getting used to such differences,” Chen said.
After mastering sign language, Chen built close relationships with hearing impaired people and offered to help them.“Many of them turn to me when they go to see a doctor," Chen said.
Recalling another volunteer experience, Chen said he was very nervous at that time. “We knew little about COVID-19 in February 2020. I was wondering how to explain the virus,” Chen said,“I was afraid of mistakenly translating the term.”
After his graduation, Chen plans to be a professional sign language interpreter and offer services for more hearing impaired people.

A few weeks ago, my 9-year-old daughter was sick. My husband was out of town. And I needed to head to the drugstore—a five-minute walk away—to get some medicine for her. So I made sure my daughter knew where to find our rarely used landline phone, quizzed her on my cellphone number and told her not to open the front door for anyone; then I left. Twenty minutes later I was back home. Both of us were a bit tense as this experience had never happened before, but we were fine.
I had been postponing this moment of independence for my daughter for months, held back by worry about the potential disasters. But I know that this way of thinking is part of a larger social problem that many people have complained of. Fewer children are walking to school on their own, riding their bicycles around neighborhoods or going on errands (差事) for their parents.
There have been several cases of parents actually being accused of allowing their children to walk or play unsupervised (无人监督的). We’re now seeing a backlash to all this pressure for parental supervision: Earlier this year, the state of Utah passed a new “free-range” parenting law that redefined neglect to specifically not include things like letting a child play in a park or walk to a nearby store alone.
Overprotected parenting can do real harm. According to a study published this year in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, the number of children aged 6 to 17 whose . parents said they were currently diagnosed with anxiety grew from 3.5% in 2007 to 4.1% in 2012. And in a 2017 survey of more than 31,000 college students by the American College Health Association, 21.6% reported that they had been diagnosed with or treated for anxiety problems during the previous year. That is up from 10.4% in a 2008 survey.
NYU Langone’s Dr. Berry says children as young as 2 or 3 can start helping with chores, such as carrying a plate to the table and putting clothes in the basket. Most 8-year-olds should be able to make scrambled eggs “with some gentle eyes on them,” while most 10-year-olds can handle a chef’s knife, she says. Parents first need to teach safe techniques, repeatedly, then assist with and monitor the activity before gradually “fading out”.
8. Why did the author and her daughter feel nervous
A. Because the drug store was a five-minute walk away from their house.
B. Because her daughter was too young to remember the phone number.
C. Because the author left her daughter home alone for the first time.
D. Because anyone could open the front door of their house.
9. What does “a larger social problem” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. Today’s children have less independence.
B. Today s parents put too much pressure on children.
C. Fewer children participate in outdoor activities.
D. Fewer children help their parents do housework.
10. What does the underlined word “backlash” probably mean
A. Explanation. B. Support. C. Opposition. D. Understanding.
11. What’s Dr. Berry’s suggestion to parents
A. When children cook, parents should be around them.
B. Children can be good helpers of their parents in housework.
C. For safety’s sake it’s best not to let children help in the kitchen.
D. It’s never too early to start encouraging children’s independence.

Human beings aren’t the only animals that need sleep. Other mammals do too, and scientists have found that many animals, including even insects and worms—with no brain—regularly enter inactive states that look like sleep.
Neuroscientists have evidence that sleep plays a central role in the function of the brain. Sleep is involved in clearing metabolic (新陈代谢的) wastes from the brain, contributes to regulating the immune system, and is involved in the changes to the brain that happen during learning and the creation of memories. That’s why the discovery that animals without brains sleep too came as a surprise to researchers.
In 2017 a group based in the United States reported that jellyfish regularly enter a sleep-like state of inactivity, from which it is hard to arouse them. In 2020 another team, from Japan, reported a similar discovery in related animals called hydra (水螅). Hydra and jellyfish are both part of an animal group called cnidarians (刺细胞动物).
Cnidarians are simple animals whose bodies are controlled by a nerve network without a central brain. Though they lack a brain, the nerve cells of cnidarians are much like ours, and the hydra researchers found some important physiological similarities between hydra sleep and human sleep.
They showed that substances like melatonin (褪黑素), which promote sleep in humans, also do so in hydra. They also found that some of the genes involved in sleep regulation in humans perform similar jobs in hydra.
What this tells us is that sleep and probably some of its functions are important for all animals, even if they don’t have a brain. The basic molecular (分子的) mechanisms for sleep probably evolved long before brains and centralized nervous systems.
12. What can we learn about the role sleep plays
A. The more you sleep, the better your brain will become.
B. Sleep is necessary for wastes from the brain to form.

Katherine Johnson whose life was described in the movie Hidden Figures died on February 24, 2020, aged 101. The 2016 movie describes a real story of some female African-American mathematicians who joined the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and led a mission to put the first man on the moon in the 1950s when racial discrimination was widespread.
“NASA is deeply saddened by the loss of a leader from our pioneering days,” said NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine on the webpage of NASA.“Ms. Johnson helped our nation enlarge the frontiers (边界) of space and she also played an important role in opening doors for women and people of color to explore space. At NASA we will never forget her courage and leadership and the achievements we could not have reached without her.”
Johnson was born in West Virginia in 1918. She graduated from West Virginia State University with a major in mathematics and became a teacher at a public school. She was also the first African-American woman to attend graduate school in mathematics at West Virginia University until she left school to focus on raising children.
Her life changed in 1952 after a long career break. A relative told her about open positions at the all-black West Area Computing section at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics’s Langley laboratory, and she began to work at Langley the next year. NASA depended on humans for complicated aerospace (航空) calculation as there was no high-functioning electronic computer. Female mathematicians usually took the job as their salary was lower. Johnson was one of those African-American human computers.
Johnson was initially in charge of aerospace analysis and assigned to a space development mission when NASA was launched in 1958. Then she worked for the 1961 suborbital (亚轨道的) flight of astronaut Alan Shepard and the 1962 orbital flight of John Glenn. Johnson continued to participate in missions after she retired in 1986. Her hidden achievements were finally publicized when former U.S. President Barack Obama granted her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 and her dramatic life was made into a movie.

Despite not being documented by researchers since 1968, the sengi (象鼩), a tiny big-eyed mouse with a long tail and a trunk-like nose that’s native to Somalia in Africa, was rediscovered living in well-preserved habitat in neighboring Djibouti this year, and in quite healthy numbers.
An exploration beginning in 2019 looked to use local knowledge about the sengi from the people of Djibouti who said it was still there. Sure enough, it took only one trap filled with coconut, peanut butter and yeast to find the little guy.
“It was surprising,” said Steven Heritage, a research scientist at Duke University in the US. “When we opened the first trap and saw the little tuft of hair on the tip of its tail, we just looked at one another and couldn’t believe it. A number of small mammal (哺乳动物) surveys since the 1970s did not find the Somali sengi in Djibouti—it was indeed a serendipitous discovery.”
One of the least understood members of the 20 species Elephantulus (象鼩属), the sengi lives in habitats that are unsuitable for most human activities, allowing it to remain relatively undisturbed and safe.
“Usually when we rediscover lost species, we find just one or two individuals and have to act quickly to try to prevent their extinction,” said Robin Moore, of the Global Wildlife Conservation (GWC) group.
The team set 1,000 traps and caught 12 of the little sengis while making the first video and photographic documentation of the animal for science. Along with rediscovering the species, the team gathered DNA samples which later showed the Somali sengi to be more closely related to sengis in other corners of Africa like Morocco and South Africa.
This finding has suggested that the Somali sengi needs to be placed in a new genus—moving from Elephantulus to Galegeeska.
Like all great discoveries in science, the questions answered are only equal to the new mysteries presented, but the researchers’ work has highlighted Djibouti as a biodiverse (具有生物多样性的) nation worthy of scientific study. With any luck, perhaps more discoveries are waiting to be made among its desert and salt lakes.
8.What made the finding of the Somali sengi special
A. It was rediscovered by Somalis.
B. It looked surprisingly different.
C. It reappeared in Africa after 52 years.

B. Why the Somali sengi can live peacefully.
C. How human activities affect the Somali sengi.
D. What environment the Somali sengi should live in.
11.How did the team know the relationships between the Somali sengi and other sengis
A. By doing DNA tests for them.
B. By studying their living habits.

Dieters have long sworn that grapefruit helps them lose weight. The Grapefruit Diet, also called the Hollywood Diet, dates back to the 1930s and has a host of celebrity fans including singer Kylie Minogue. It involves having grapefruit or grapefruit juice with every meal while cutting back on calories.
Now, scientists are beginning to believe them.
A study has found that drinking grapefruit juice when eating fatty food lowers the amount of weight put on by up to a fifth.
The research also suggested that grapefruit could be as good as prescription drugs at keeping blood sugar levels under control—a key part of managing diabetes.
The experiments were conducted on mice—but researchers say the results are true for humans. Professor Joseph Napoli, of the University of California, Berkeley, said, “We see all sorts of tricks about nutrition. But these results, based on controlled experiments, make it necessary to study the potential health-promoting properties of grapefruit juice further.”
The researchers found that when the mice were fed fatty food for three months, those given grapefruit juice to drink gained up to 18 percent less weight than those given water.
They also had lower blood sugar and insulin levels—despite eating the same number of calories and doing the same amount of exercise as the mice who drank water. In fact, grapefruit juice was as good at controlling insulin as the widely used diabetes drugs, the journal PLOS ONE reports.
However, the fruit juice only had an effect on weight when the animals ate fatty food. The researchers said they did not know how grapefruit stops the pounds from piling on.
Spokesman Mariette Abrahams, a dietician, said until then it is too early for people to try grapefruit diets. “Grapefruit should be part of a healthy balanced diet, but it shouldn’t be the focus of the diet.” she said.
12. What can be known about the Hollywood Diet
It’s the origin of the Grapefruit Diet.
It was more popular in the 1930s than any time.
It may appeal to fat people.
Scientists may think it is nonsense.
13. What did the experiments on mice show
They should have been conducted on humans.
The results apply to humans too.
Grapefruit could cure diabetes.
Mice prefer grapefruit juice to water.
14. In which case will grapefruit juice make a difference to weight loss
The mice with high blood sugar.
The mice doing a lot of exercise.
The mice on a fatty diet.
The mice taking prescription drugs.
15. What’s the best title of the text
Nutrition of Grapefruit
Experiment on Grapefruit
Grapefruit Makes a Hit
Grapefruit Helps Keep Fit

I grew up in a home with a mother who believes that vaccines (疫苗) cause brain damage, and do not contribute to the health and safety of a society. The only shot I received was for tetanus (破伤风) when I was two months old. After that, nothing.
At the beginning of each school year, I was very nervous. Delayed term paper Mischievous (捣蛋的) behavior Late for school None of them. I’d be pulled out of class and brought to the headmaster’s office. The school doctor would tell me I hadn’t received any of the necessary shots to attend school. But the same thing occurred each time: my mom would free me from the shots and nothing would happen.
After doing a lot of research, I found although people who don’t vaccinate their children make up only a relatively small group, they can cause major consequences. People who, for health or age reasons, cannot receive vaccines are at a higher risk of catching a preventable disease.
Eventually, I turned 18. In Ohio, where I live, I had to wait until I became a legal adult to make the decision to receive vaccine shots. A huge factor in taking the step to ensure my health was the message board website Reddit. Last November, I asked Reddit users for advice about what vaccines to ask for and how to go about getting them from a doctor. After my post received more than 1,000 comments, I made an appointment with my family physician. Despite how strongly my mother felt, I went through with it anyway.
I did something every person should do. It wasn’t special in any way. Vaccines protect the health and safety of not only yourself but also other people. Vaccination is important because someone could die if you don’t get vaccinated. This was the biggest reason I got vaccines despite the opposition.
1. Why was the author called to the headmaster’s office at the beginning of each school year
A. He was late for school.
B. He didn’t behave himself at school.
C. He couldn’t hand in his term paper on time.
D. He was hardly ever vaccinated.
2. How might the author’s mother have felt about his appointment with the family physician
A. Annoyed. B. Grateful. C. Thrilled. D. Guilty.
3. What does the author mainly want to tell us through his story
A. Listening to your mother pays off.
B. Doing the right thing matters.
C. Keeping fit is the best policy.
D. Asking for advice helps.
B
When did you last buy something Maybe you are looking forward to a shopping trip at the weekend, but will it make you happy In the short term, the answer might be yes. However, some people think it might not be good for our health and happiness in the long term.
One of the busiest shopping days of the year in the USA is Black Friday (the fourth Friday of November), which has spread around the world. However, not everyone will be queuing for a bargain. In 1992, Buy Nothing Day started in Canada and now more than sixty countries take part. Their message is simple: “Participate by not participating.” For twenty-four hours on the fourth Friday of November, people do not buy anything at all. Some people choose to spend time with friends and family instead. Others join protests. But what’s the point
Every single purchase that you make has some kind of an effect on the planet. Making the products and transporting them to the shops use a lot of natural resources. When they are no longer in fashion, the products will end up in the dustbin. All this contributes to air and water pollution, the destruction of our environment and social inequality.
The social influence of our spending habits is also serious. People in consumerist culture are more likely to suffer from financial problems and stress. In order to buy expensive products, people work long hours and therefore spend less time with family and friends.
Critics of Buy Nothing Day say it’s meaningless because people will just buy more the following day. But the organizers argue that Buy Nothing Day makes people think about the consequences of consumption and maybe make some changes to their life style.
Why is the question “When did you last buy something ” asked
A. To remind us of the approaching of Black Friday.
B. To attach importance to our health and happiness.
C. To introduce the topic of shopping too much.
D. To encourage us to participate in Buy Nothing Day.
How can people participate in Buy Nothing Day
A. By not participating in any advertisement for Black Friday.
B. By not buying anything on four Fridays of November.
C. By spending time shopping with friends and family.
D. By not going shopping on Black Friday.
What’s NOT the point of Buy Nothing Day
A. Saving time spent on working.
B. Saving the environment and our earth.
C. Saving money for charity.
D. Saving our relationship with friends and family.
What’s the organizers’ opinion on Buy Nothing Day
A. It can make a difference in some way.
B. It won’t have a lasting effect.
C. It can help people choose goods more reasonably.
D. It can cure people’s shopping addiction.
C
Of all the places stray (流浪的) cats can live in Beijing, perhaps none provides greater companionship than an underground facility known as the “Cat Shed”. A variety of cats are spread across the shed’s 100 square meters. They jump and play on toy towers or rest on cotton blankets on iron-framed beds.
Since the facility was established in 2012, some 150 cats have lived there. More than 100 volunteers attend to the strays. Many claim that they gain greater benefit from the interaction than the cats, because the animals offer not just companionship, but also a kind of healing.
The “housekeeper” is Yin Yi, a doctoral candidate at the Central Iron and Steel Research Institute in Beijing. When the 29-year-old arrived in the capital in late 2015, he faced huge pressure from his studies and personal relationships, while the alien environment exacerbated his feeling of loneliness.
After gaining a master’s from a university in Inner Mongolia, Yin relocated to go for a doctorate in material sciences. Accustomed to having friends around, he was not used to a lonely life, especially working by himself and spending up to 10 hours in a lab most days. To improve his mood, he decided to contact animal bases, looking for opportunities to care for stray cats. When he heard that a stray cat basement near his campus was looking for volunteers, he contacted Wu Xinhua, who organizes activities at the Cat Shed, and was soon surrounded by furry friends. His favorite moment is when he dishes out food and a dozen strays gather round, with several rubbing against his feet. When he graduates, Yin plans to house three strays in his apartment.
What does the underlined word “exacerbated” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Worsened B. Improved
C. Replaced D. Touched
What can we learn about the Cat Shed
A. Yin Yi has rented the basement and provided facilities for the Cat Shed.
B. The Cat Shed is a relaxing and warm place for volunteers.
C. Wu Xinhua raises money to run the Cat Shed.
D. The Cat Shed only allows volunteers to adopt cats there.
What is the best title for the text
A. Stray cats enjoy themselves at the Cat Shed
B. Volunteers make stray cats live a better life
C. “Stray” youngsters in Beijing need healing
D. Furry friends promote stress-free lives
