Take a tour of university libraries around the world
As the American writer Shelby Foote once said: “A university is just a group of buildings gathered around a library.” Let’s take a look at some famous university libraries around the world.
Bizzell Memorial Library
Built in 1929, Bizzell Memorial Library, a National Historic Land mark that sits at the heart of The University of Oklahoma, features unique Cherokee Gothic architecture influenced by the Native American style.
Bizzell Memorial Library contains more than 6 million volumes. As the largest library in the state of Oklahoma, it also is home to one of the most important History of Science collections in the nation. The collection contains 12 original works by Galileo, four of which contain his own handwriting.
Magdalen College Old Library
Oxford University is famous for its academic programs, but it’s also known for its outstanding libraries that are said to include more than 11 million books. The Old Library at Magdalen College is the crown jewel of the university’s library system. It contains more than 20,000 rare books. Nearly all of these volumes were published before 1800. It’s also said to be one of the most beautiful libraries in the world with its studious interior and dramatic Gothic Revival exterior.
Old Library
The world-famous Long Room in the Old Library at Trinity College Dublin is full of ancient books, marble busts (大理石半身像) and wood paneling (画板). It was built between 1712 and 1732 and houses 20,000 of the library’s oldest books, which are rare and of high value.
Treasures of the library’s extensive collection include a rare copy of the 1916 proclamation (公告) of the Irish Republic and a beautiful 15th century harp.
The Joe and Rika Mansueto Library
Opened in 2011, the Joe and Rika Mansueto Library at the University of Chicago in the US features a grand glass roof, perfect for staring out of when you need to give your eyes a rest.

I am touched by the story about a man and a cat. I’m a cat lover. I had many cats who accompanied me in my life and have two cats at present. Sometimes cats can be extremely sensitive, and they actually understand everything you do even sometimes your emotion can be effective to them. They can be very comforting when you feel sad or stressed. They are good listeners and perfect companions.
The book tells an uncommon friendship with the cat, which has led to the former homeless north London street performer finding a new way of life.
When James Bowen found an injured abandoned cat in the hallway of his apartment building, he had no idea about how his life would be changed. James was living hand to mouth on the street of London, and the last thing he needed was a pet. Yet Bowen couldn’t resist helping the strikingly intelligent but very sick cat, whom he quickly named Bob. He carefully nursed Bob back to health and then freed the cat, thinking he would never see it again.
Obviously, Bob had its own ideas.
Soon the two were good friends and enjoyed their colorful, funny life. Sometimes, they took adventures together. All these experiences would change both of them, slowly healing each other’s scars made by their troubled past.
It’s not very well written or deeply philosophical, it’s just a story about a sweet cat and a wonderful man, and that’s the best thing. You are likely to believe in the influence of animals after reading it. They can heal, teach, and push us to be better.
This is a reader-friendly English novel, which won’t terrify you with complex structures or uncommon vocabulary. When you read it, you will lose yourselves in this warm story. You can even feel the London street where they walk through everyday and hear the music of coins dropping into James’ guitar case while he’s performing with s mart Bob sitting beside him.

On Nov. 30, 2020, NASA flight engineer Kate Rubins pulled out 20 radish (萝卜) plants grown in the space station’s Advanced Plant Habitat, wrapping them in foil for cold storage until they can make the voyage back to Earth next year.
Back on the ground, scientists at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida are growing radishes in a control group. The researchers will compare the space-grown radishes to the vegetables grown on Earth, checking on how space produce measures up on providing the minerals and nutrients astronauts (宇航员) need as they prepare for longer trips.
With their short growing time, radishes present potential advantages as a food source for future astronauts carrying out deep space missions in years to come. The radishes grow quickly, and they can be harvested in 27 days. The root vegetables also don’t require much care from people.
Astronauts have grown 15 different types of plants on the station, which include eight different types of leafy greens. And NASA has already tested more than 100 crops on Earth, identifying which plants to try out next in space. “Growing a range of crops helps us determine which plants grow better in microgravity and offer the best variety and nutritional balance for astronauts on long-time missions,” Dufour said.
Getting space agriculture right matters because the nutrients in the prepackaged food that astronauts currently eat in space degrade (降级) over a period of time, NASA said. Getting humans to Mars and back safely over a two-or-three-year mission requires growing food along the way. That not only gives astronauts more of a supply of fresh nutrients on the voyage, it also serves an emotional need as they tend to crops that are both a figurative (比喻的) and literal taste of home.
8. Why do astronauts choose to plant radishes in the space station
A. Radishes don’t need too much attention.
B. Radishes can be stored in cold conditions.
C. Radishes can supply enough nutrients alone.
D. Radishes’ growing time can be shortened in space.
9. What’s the purpose of testing various crops on Earth
A. To help researchers carry out experiments more correctly.
B. To provide astronauts in space with more choices of food.
C. To serve emotional support for astronauts on the voyage.
D. To make sure the plants grow well and avoid nutrition loss.
10. What does the underlined word “they” refer to in the last paragraph
A. Astronauts. B. Nutrients. C. Researchers. D. Radishes.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Agriculture in the future B. The food for astronauts
C. Planting radishes in space D. Preparations for space mission
D
You've probably learned that bears eat a lot before hibernating (冬眠), putting on weight suddenly. It's an enviable practice, because those bears don't have the same health problems as fat people. A study published in Cell Reports has found that it might be due to the bear's friendly gut microbes (肠道细菌).
In summer, bears go through an extreme period of eating, while they eat nothing about six months during winter hibernation. To compare the microbiomes (微生物) of both seasons, the researchers collected the samples of their waste from 16 wild bears during hibernation and in summer. What they found is that the bear's lifestyle changes dramatically with seasons. During hibernation, the kinds of microbiomes became less than the summer samples.
To find out how that might affect metabolism (新陈代谢), the researchers transferred the microbes from the winter and the summer into lab mice. Mice with the summer microbes gained more weight than those with the winter microbes. However, those fatter summer mice weren't different from the winter mice in their glucose (葡萄糖) metabolism. “Thus, the bear may be atypical model for healthy obesity (肥胖) and studying hibernation might be a promising approach to developing new treatments for obesity,” the authors write.
However, there are still more researches needed before humans benefit from bear gut microbes. The researchers note that relying on free-ranging wild bears means they know little about their food intake and other habits. And though they were able to produce interesting metabolic results in mice, mice are quite different from humans. And another research suggests that exposure to cold can also change the composition of gut bacteria, improving glucose metabolism and fat burning abilities in mice.
12. Why don't bears suffer the same health problems as fat people
A. Because of hibernation. B. Because of no exercise.
C. Because of their special food intake. D. Because of some friendly gut microbes.
13. What can we learn from the text
A. Bears' weight increases quickly during hibernating.
B. Bears' lifestyle changes greatly in different seasons.
C. Bears' microbiomes in summer are less than those in winter.
D. Bears' glucose metabolism varies with seasons.
14. What's the author's attitude to the benefits of the research for human
A Favorable. B. Disapproving. C. Cautious. D. Curious.
15. What is the passage mainly about
A. The way of bears' metabolism.
B. The seasonal lifestyles of bears.
C. The approach to treating obesity.

The best travel movies of all time
Movie theaters around the world have closed during the coronavirus outbreak. Fortunately, there’s never been a better time to catch up on classic oldies and favorites. Below, read our picks for best travel movies:
Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
It’s one of the most satisfying films of director Wes Anderson’s works. Set in an imaginary country East European Republic of Zubrowka in the 1930s, the plot is anchored by a murder investigation peppered with stolen art, prison escapes and a secret concierge society.
Though the hotel doesn’t actually exist, much of the film was shot in the beautiful German town of Goerlitz, famous for its medieval streets.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001)
When Harry Potter runs through a column at King’s Cross railway station in London to get to Platform 9 , we know it isn’t real. And yet we want to visit.
The movie’s locations are inspired by real places, as graduates of English private schools will tell you: black robe for formal hall dinners, rushing to narrow old streets to visit tea houses and sandwich shops, discovering books that are hundreds of years old.
Roman Holiday (1953)
Equal parts bittersweet and fascinating, 1953 fairy tale “Roman Holiday” features a doe-eyed princess (Audrey Hepburn) and a dashing newspaperman (Gregory Peck) in a romantic film that has them wandering the Spanish Steps and breaking into the streets of Rome on a Vespa.
In a time when those streets are quiet, the film might serve as a reminder that they will eventually spring to life again.

My side of the Mountain is a novel about a boy called Sam Gribley. 14-year-old Sam Gribley lives in his family’s crowded New York apartment. Unsatisfied with the situation, Sam plans to run away to his great-grandfather’s abandoned farm in the woods near the small town of Delhi.
Sam’s father allows it. He strongly believes Sam will come back once he realizes what it’s like-to live without things like electricity and running water.
Then a bus takes Sam to Delhi. Sam uses fire to enlarge a tree’s inside and makes it his home. To seek food, he makes traps. While checking his traps, Sam spots a falcon (猎鹰) hunting for animals. Wanting a falcon to help hunt, Sam studies falconry at the town’s library. He camps for days to track down the falcon’s nest. After finally piecing together its location, he steals a baby falcon and manages to train it to hunt for him. As winter approaches, Sam kills a deer for its skin and roasts deer meat for food.
Spring arrives. Matt, a teenager reporter, arrives at Sam’s tree house. Matt wants to write about Sam’s life on the Gribley farm and spends a week with Sam. Matt is very excited to be there while Sam is suddenly sad. Matt’s coming reminds him too much of life in New York City. Several large companies have begun creating paper bottles to take the place of glass and plastic ones. Paper bottles aren’t quite ready to go yet, but you may see them appearing on shelves over the next few years.
Customers have become more worried about the environment, so many companies have begun working to develop paper bottles. Paper bottles have many benefits. Perhaps the most important is that they can be easily recycled. Paper bottles also weigh less than glass or plastic ones, meaning they’ll require less energy to produce and to move around. Since paper is soft and easy to be shaped, companies can design their bottles to take almost any shape they choose.
A company called Paboco has been working with many large companies to develop paper bottles. The companies are creating their own bottle designs, but they’re sharing what they learn to speed up the development of paper bottle technology.
Clearly, one of the biggest challenges is keeping a paper bottle from leaking (漏). Many companies are lining (做内衬) their bottles with a thin sheet of plastic. Though bottle makers may say they can be removed, many recycling programs don’t have the right machines to handle them.
A company named Diageo has just announced the first paper bottle that is completely plastic-free. Instead of a plastic liner, a non-plastic coating will be used on the inside of the bottles. This should make the bottle fully recyclable. But even without the plastic, paper bottles aren’t perfect, which means more trees need to be cut down to make the bottles.
There’s still lots of testing to be done before paper bottles can replace glass or plastic ones. But with so many companies working toward the same goal, it’s likely that we can expect to see paper bottles on store shelves in the near future.
28. What is the greatest advantage of paper bottles according to the passage
A. They are lighter than plastic or glass ones.
B. They are soft and can be easily shaped.
C. They can be moved around with less energy.
D. They are easy to recycle and environmentally friendly.
29.What is Paboco doing to improve the development of paper bottle technology
A. It’s cooperating with some other large companies.
B. It’s creating its own bottle designs.
C. It’s studying how to prevent paper bottles from leaking alone.
D. It’s trying to keep its technology secret from others.
30. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. Many companies. B. The paper bottles.
C. The thin sheets of plastic. D. Bottle makers.
31.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A. A non-plastic coating is the best solution to the problem of pollution.
B. Paper bottles still need to be improved before appearing in stores.
C. Paper bottles have taken the place of glass or plastic ones so far.
D. Many companies are working toward the same goal.

Often, high school students don’t have a wide selection of courses from which they may choose. However, many online high schools offer a course list that includes almost everything from basics like math and science to extras like computer programming and instrument lessons. Many online high schools also offer students the chance to take advanced classes that may not be as readily available in some traditional schools.
An online high school student doesn’t have to get up very early in the morning and rush out to school. Instead, he can get a reasonable amount of sleep and start his day on his preferred schedule. While online schools do have attendance requirements, an online school can be more flexible (灵活的). And, the online high school students don’t have to worry about what to wear or what their classmates will say about how they look that day.
An online high school student needn’t be worried about a class that is moving too quickly or too slowly for him. Likewise, he may be able to take advantage of course offerings that suit his own learning style. For example, some online high schools offer coursework that meets the needs of visual (视觉的) or auditory (听觉的) learners in addition to those who can learn from traditional schools.
Since online high school students don’t need to spend time waiting for class to start and traveling to and from school, they may have more time to follow their hobbies. For example, if a student is training in dancing, he may have more time to practice. If another student is learning a musical instrument, he may have more time for that as well. Even part-time work and socializing may fit better into the life of a student taking advantage of the flexibility offered by an online school.
32. What’s the difference between traditional high school and online high school
A. Range of classes to learn. B. Tradition of teaching.
C. Ways of selecting courses. D. Chances of learning basics.
33. What does an online school student need to do
A. Start his day early. B. Attend class according to rules.
C. Mind his appearance. D. Have a tight schedule based on interest.
34. How can an online school meet students’ needs
By offering courses of different styles.
By listing the experiment results for remembering.
By slowing down the teaching pace.
By reducing the time of coursework.
35. What’s the best title of the text
A. Traditional Schools or Online Schools B. Strengths of Traditional Schools
C. Importance of Online Schools D. Flexibility of Online Schools

People in Japan tend to live longer and stay healthier in their later years, with an increasing number of old people living alone. Japan is on a fast track to “ultra-age” with people aged 65 or above accounting for 28 percent of its total population in 2019;it was 26.7 percent in 2017. On the other hand, the number of births in 2019 fell to its lowest (about 941,000) since records began in 1899.
Demand for care services for elderly people has increased. A shrinking (缩小) working population means fewer able-bodied adults are available to look after the elderly. State-provided facilities for the elderly are not enough, which causes elderly people to turn to private ones but they are expensive.
The country will be short of 380,000 of health nurses by 2025. The government has to turn to advanced robots to meet the shortage. A study found that using robots encouraged one third of the people to become more active and independent. Yet there is no robot that can provide the emotional support to the elderly.
Japan provides a case study for China, which is also faced with a fast aging population. 17.23 million babies were born in China in 2019, about 630,000 fewer than in 2018. People aged 60 accounted for 17.3 of China’s population in 2019. With a shortage of elderly care facilities and unbalanced supply, China may find it hard to deal with the rapidly increasing number of senior citizens.
To meet the challenge, the Chinese government should make policy changes, which Japan is unwilling or unable to do or even consider. China should pay attention to the signals its aging population is sending and take proper and timely action.
4. What do we learn about the old Japanese
A. More and more old Japanese prefer to live on their own.
B. A lot of old Japanese have to continue working at old age.
C. Some old Japanese remain active with the help of robots.
D. Japanese aged 65 or above make up one third of its population.
5. What can we know about state-provided care facilities for the elderly in Japan
A. They are expensive. B. They are inconvenient.
C. They are affordable. D. They are fashionable.
6. What do the Japanese do to deal with the shortage of health nurses
A. They hire foreign health nurses.
B. They employ advanced robots.
C. They set up more nursing schools.
D. They train the elderly to tend themselves.
7. What is the main idea of the last two paragraph
A. Japan has to take action to deal with the aging population.
B. Robots can’t provide emotional support to the elderly.
C. China is now faced with a fast aging population.
D. Japan’s aging population issue is a timely lesson for China.
C
UK-based swimming pool manufacturer (制造商) Compass Pools has announced plans for the world’s first 360-degree infinity (无限) pool. Titled Infinity London, the pool would contain 600,000 liters of water, and would sit at the top of a 55-story hotel.
According to Compass Pools’ plan, the pool would feature transparent (透明的) walls and floor, offering views across London’s skyline and down into the hotel below. These walls would be made of cast acrylic, a material chosen to make sure that the material is completely clear.
The main problem with designing the pool was how to make sure entry or exit from the pool without affecting the view. Speaking about this design, Compass Pools’ technical director and designer Alex Kemsley explained,“Normally a simple ladder would suffice, but we didn’t want stairs on the outside of the building or in the pool as it would spoil the view – and obviously you don’t want 600,000 litres of water running down through the building either. The solution is based on the door of a submarine, coupled with a rotating spiral (螺旋的) staircase which rises from the pool floor when someone wants to get in or out.”
Take a look at early models of how the pool might look in the gallery above. At present, no contract has been made but building work could begin as early as 2020.
What does the underlined word “suffice” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Solve the problem. B. Beautify the pool.
C. Add to the difficulty. D. Make sure of safety.
How can swimmers get in the pool
A. By stepping onto a simple ladder in the pool.
B. By taking a lift of the building below the pool.
C. Through a rotating spiral staircase in the center of the pool.
D. Through a submarine door and a staircase.
Which is the best title for the text
A. The secret of the world’s first 360-degree infinity pool
B. World’s first 360-degree infinity pool is set to open in London
C. UK-based swimming pool manufacturer Compass Pools meet problems
D. Enjoying ourselves in the sky is never impossible

【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了太空萝卜的优势,以及科学家对于进行地球与太空作物种植进行比较分析对比更适合宇航员的食物来源。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“With their short growing time, radishes present potential advantages as a food source for future astronauts carrying out deep space missions in years to come. The radishes grow quickly, and they can be harvested in 27 days. The root vegetables also don’t require much care from people.(由于萝卜生长时间短,在未来几年里,作为未来宇航员进行深空任务的食物来源,萝卜具有潜在的优势。萝卜长得很快,27天就能收获。根茎类蔬菜也不需要人们太多的照料)”可知,宇航员选择在空间站种萝卜是因为萝卜生长快,并且不需要太多的照料。故选A。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“And NASA has already tested more than 100 crops on Earth, identifying which plants to try out next in space. "Growing a range of crops helps us determine which plants grow better in microgravity and offer the best variety and nutritional balance for astronauts on long-time missions," Dufour said.(美国国家航空航天局已经在地球上测试了100多种作物,确定了哪些植物可以在太空中试用。杜福尔说:“种植一系列作物有助于我们确定哪种作物在微重力环境下生长得更好,并为长期执行任务的宇航员提供最好的品种和营养平衡。”)”推知,在地球上试验各种作物的目的是为太空中的宇航员提供更多的食物选择,以达到营养平衡的目的。故选B。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“That not only gives astronauts more of a supply of fresh nutrients on the voyage, it also serves an emotional need as they tend to crops that are both a figurative and literal taste of home.(这不仅为宇航员在航行中提供了更多的新鲜营养,还满足了他们的情感需求,因为他们倾向于种植具有家的象征意义和字面意义的作物。)”可知,本段主要讲述的是这些食物对于宇航员的好处,所以此处的they指代的是前句中的astronauts(宇航员)。故选A。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Astronauts have grown 15 different types of plants on the station, which include eight different types of leafy greens.(2020年11月30日,美国国家航空航天局飞行工程师凯特·鲁宾斯从空间站的高级植物栖息地取出20棵萝卜,用箔纸包裹起来冷藏,直到明年返回地球。)”

根据第一段“A study published in Cell Reports has found that it might be due to the bear's friendly gut microbes(肠道细菌).(发表在《细胞报告》上的一项研究发现,这可能是由于熊的肠道微生物友好)”可知,熊不会遭受和胖子一样的健康问题是因为肠道微生物非常友好。故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“What they found is that the bear's lifestyle changes dramatically with seasons.(他们发现这种熊的生活方式会随着季节的变化而发生戏剧性的变化)”可知,熊的生活方式在不同的季节变化很大。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“there are still more researches needed before humans benefit from bear gut microbes.(在人类从熊的肠道微生物中获益之前,还需要进行更多的研究)”可推断,作者对这项研究对人类的益处的态度是谨慎的。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“You've probably learned that bears eat a lot before hibernating ,putting on weight suddenly. It's an enviable practice, because those bears don't have the same health problems as fat people. A study published in Cell Reports has found that it might be due to the bear's friendly gut microbes.(你可能已经知道熊在冬眠前吃很多东西,体重会突然增加。这是一种令人羡慕的做法,因为那些熊不像肥胖的人一样有健康问题。发表在《细胞报告》上的一项研究发现,这可能是由于熊的肠道微生物友好)”及全文可知,文章主要是在研究熊虽肥胖但却很健康的原因。故选D。
