In March, I traveled to Kakuma, Kenya with UNICEF(联合国儿童基金会), to learn what it was like for refugees(难民)to live there and go to their schools. Most of my time, however, was spent with kids in schools.
Head teacher of Mogadishu Primary School, Pascal Lukosi, greeted me in the office. The school had 2, 815 students who sat shoulder to shoulder in the classroom. I quickly did the math: one teacher for every 134 students. Crammed classrooms are common in Kakuma's schools. And many kids don't go to school at the proper age.
Motorbikes, called boda-bodas, are the main means of transportation on Kakuma's roads. There are no buses, and most of the kids walk to school. For some, the trip takes more than an hour each way. I asked what they usually did after school. “I bring back water and wash clothes, ”said Njema Nadai Ben, a12-year-old boy. There is a severe shortage of running water here, so refugees have to walk to one of the camp's wells to get water.
What about homework “We don't have lights to read at night, ”explained Rachel Akol Dau aged 17. Homes there also lack electricity. In spite of the conditions, Rachel and other students find their way to study. "I light firewood. That gives me light, ”She told me. “I want to change the future of my family. ”
At Morneau Shepell Secondary School for Girls, students wake at 4:30, eat breakfast at 6:00, and start the class at 7:30. “The school is there to give the girls a safe place, ”said Mohamud Hure, a UN officer in Kakuma. In one classroom, students announced to visitors what they wanted to do in life. Most of them dreamed of becoming doctors, lawyers and engineers.
When I left, I took a picture of Rose, the girl I met on my first day. She dreams of a career as a doctor. This year, she'll graduate from primary school. “It's education that brings me faith in changing my life, ”said Rose.
24. What does the underlined word “Crammed” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Large. B. Clean. C. Overcrowded. D. Damaged.
25. What do we know about the kids in Kakuma
A. They lead a very tough life.
B. They begin to study at an early age.
C. They always go to school by boda-boda.
D. They have a busy and stressful school life.
26. Which of the following can best describe Rachel
A. Creative and generous. B. Caring and far-sighted.
C. Confident and cautious. D. Modest and determined.
27. What do the kids think of education
A. It is valueless. B. It is out of reach.
C. It rids them of unfairness. D. It gives them hope.

New research has found that people with mild cognitive impairment(认知损坏)may not necessarily develop dementia(痴呆)and, in fact, having higher education and advanced language skills more than doubles their chances of returning to normal. The study, led by researchers at the University of Waterloo, may reassure those with mild cognitive impairment as it contradicts a common assumption that the condition is simply an early stage of dementia. People with mild cognitive impairment show signs of cognitive decline, but not enough to prevent them from performing typical daily tasks. They have been considered at higher risk of progressing to the more severe cognitive decline seen in dementia.
“Possessing high cognitive reserve, based on education, high academic grades, and writ- ten language skills, may predict what happens years after someone receives a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment, ”said Suzanne Tyas, a professor in the School of Public Health Sciences at Waterloo and lead author. “Even after considering age, genetics and established risk factors for dementiawe found that higher levels of education more than doubled the chances that people with mild cognitive impairment would return to normal cognition instead of progressing to dementia. ”
The study's findings have meanings for treatment and research in people with mild cognitive impairment. “If individuals with higher cognitive reserve are more likely to improve even without treatment, then this needs to be taken into consideration when recruiting participants for cinical trials of prospective treatments and when interpreting the results of these trials, ” Tvas said, adding there's no cure for most causes of dementia, so prevention is key.
28. About mild cognitive impairment, which is consistent with the new study
A. It results in dementia.
B. It is an early stage of dementia.
C. It will stop people's daily action,
D. It doesn't surely lead to dementia.
29, How is one's cognitive reserve assessed
A. Through level of education. B. Through social frequency.
C. Through personal income D. Through personal relationship.
30. What is the most significant to dementia
A. Proper cure. B. Medical care.
C. Specific medicine. D. Early prevention.
31. What is the main idea of the text
A. People with cognitive impairment show cognitive decline.
B. Age and genetics are established risk factors for dementia.
C. Higher education and language skills may help stop dementia.
D. A study focuses on the consequence of cognitive impairment.

Researchers from The University of Queensland(UQ)have helped design a new app to protect birds at risk of extinction across the world by eliminating language barriers among scientists. The Bird Language Diversity web app will help provide a “birds eye view”, ensuring vital information is shared to improve worldwide conservation.
UQ's Dr Pablo Negret said the research team analysed more than 10, 000 bird species, and found that 1, 587 species have 10 languages or more spoken within their distributions, “Scientific information on species can be spread across different languages, and valuable information can go missing or get lost in translation, ”Dr Negret said. “Without enough sharing of information this can affect the effectiveness of conservation measures
Take the common bird Pochard for example. It is classified as vulnerable species(易危 种)and crosses 108 countries in Europe, Asia and north Africa, where a total of 75 official languages are spoken. The survival of the common Pochard, and so many other species, depends on effective cooperation and policy agreements among people with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
This app reveals where threatened and migratory birds(候鸟)exist geographically, in relation to the language spoken in those regions. “We hope the app will encourage researcher and conservation organisations to interact with their peers in other regions, especially if the speak different languages, and be a starting point to allow everyone to work together to protect threatened species, ”Dr Negret said.
Dr Tatsuya Amano, a researcher and the co-author of the paper, said this work coul( extend further than bird species. “Any species, whether they're mammals, amphibians(两极 动物), or plants, with a range crossing multiple countries will be impacted by language barriers, as well as species that migrate across different countries, such as marine species an butterflies, ”he said. "The significance of the impact of poor communication on such an important issue is evident, and is the reason why we're working hard to improve science communication across languages.
32. What does the underlined word "eliminating" in paragraph 1 mean
A. Breaking down. B. Coming across
C. Putting up with D. Giving in to
33. What is the function of adequate sharing of information
A. Ensuring the effectiveness of protective measures
B. Helping scientists take different measures accordingly.
C. Spreading knowledge of the diversity of birds worldwide.
D. Compromising the effectiveness of conservation measures
34. What is shown on the app
A. The producer of the app
B. The location of endangered birds
C. The organizations involved.
D. The information of new geographers.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. Birds Protection ls an Urgency
B. A New Bird App Helps Learn Languages
C. A New Bird App Spreads Its Wings
D. Poor Communication Impacts Cooperation

It all happened one afternoon in Carl's backyard a few years ago. We had just finished playing stickball, and I was about to go home.
“Wait a minute,” Carl yelled. He ran into his house and came back with a book for me to take home and read. All he said was, “See if you like it.”
I said absolutely nothing. I kept the book for a couple of weeks and then returned it unread. Carl never asked me if I liked it or not. During the following two years Carl lent me three more books. Each time I returned them unread.
A few days after graduating from high school, Carl asked, “Benny, which college are you going to ”
“I'm not going to college.” I said.
“Why not ” he asked.
“Because my father can't afford the tuition (学费).” I answered.
“Is that it ” Carl asked. “Yes,” I said.
I lied. I had no intention of going back to school now that I was out. The following day, Carl knocked on my door and handed me a check for seventy-five dollars from his father along with the book Martin Eden. “I think that should do it.” he said.
Once again I was in shock. I was working full-time in my brother's bakery. I attended two classes at Wayne University part-time at night. Halfway through the semester, after receiving failing grades on exams and essays, I decided there was no way I would ever become a good student and get satisfactory grades. I dropped out of college.
One day, curious, I picked up the book, thinking Carl was trying to tell me something. Despite difficulty, I pressed on. Paper is an important part of modern life. People use it in school, at work, to make artwork and books, to wrap presents and much more. Trees are the most common material for paper these days.
So how do people make paper out of trees today People first cut trees, load them onto trucks and bring them to a factory. Machines cut open the outer coverings of the trees, and cut the trees into pieces. Those pieces are boiled into a soup. After that, it is hit flat, dried and cut up into sheets of paper.
The entire process, from planting a small tree to buying your school notebook, takes a very long time. Just growing the trees takes 10 to 20 years.
Making tons of paper from trees can harm the planet. Humans cut down 80, 000 to 160,000 trees around the world every day, and use many of them to make paper. Some of those trees come from tree farms. But people also cut down forests for paper, which means that animals and birds lose their homes.
Cutting forests down also contributes to climate change, and paper factories pollute the air. After you throw paper, it often takes the paper six to nine years to break down. That's why recycling is important. It saves a lot of trees, slows climate change and helps protect endangered animals, birds and all creatures that rely on forests for their homes and food.
So if paper isn't good for the environment why don't people write on something else
The answer: They do. With computers, tablets and cellphones, people use much less paper than in the past. Maybe a day will come when we won't use paper at all — or will save it for very special books and artworks.
28. What can we know about making paper out of trees
A. It costs much money. B. It takes a lot of time.
C. It is very easy and fast. D. It is dangerous and difficult.
29. What is the impact of paper production
A. It promotes the recycling.
B. It does harm to the environment.
C. It slows down the climate change.
D. It protects the animals from losing homes.
30. How will we use paper someday in the future according to the text
A. Use it for books only. B. Use the recycled paper.
C. Treasure it occasionally. D. Use it for artworks.
31. What idea does the author want to express from the text
A. The influence of making paper on environment.
B. The wonderful experience of making paper.
C. The necessary process of making paper.
D. The good reasons for making paper.

According to the study posted on ScienceDirect, gardening just two to three times a week increase the benefits of better well-being as much as possible and lower stress levels.
The research explored why residents engaged with gardening and the extent to which they recognized any health benefits from the activity.
A questionnaire was handed out electronically within the UK, with 5,766 gardeners and 249 non-gardeners responding. Data was collected on factors including garden typology(类型学), frequency of gardening and individual awareness of health and well-being.
"This is the first time the dose response(剂量效应)to gardening has been tested and the evidence from the survey strongly suggests that the more frequently you garden, the greater the health benefits," said Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) lead author Dr Lauriane Chalmin-Pui. In fact, gardening every day has the same positive impact on well-being than undertaking regular and powerful exercise like cycling or running.
When gardening, our brains are pleasantly entertained by nature around us. Gardening takes our attention away from ourselves and our stresses, therefore, it helps restore our minds and reduce unfavorable feelings.
Improving health, however, was not the main motive power to garden, but rather the direct pleasure gardening brought to the participants.
"Gardening is like effortless exercise because it doesn't feel as exhausting and hard as going to the gym for example, but we can expend similar amounts of energy," Chalmin-Pui added.
Most people say they garden for pleasure and enjoyment, so people who like gardening may be easy to be addicted to it. However, this sometimes may become a piece of good news, from the aspect of mental health. "We hope all the millions of new gardeners will be getting their daily gardening and feeling all the better for it. " Chalmin-Pui said in the interview.
32. What can be inferred about gardening from the survey
A. Improving health is the aim of the participants.
B. Gardening makes no difference to health.
C. Health benefits from frequent gardening.
D. Too much gardening always does harm to health.
33. What does the underlined word "expend" mean in paragraph 7
A. Consume. B. Make use of. C. Increase. D. Save.
34. Why do so many participants like gardening
A. It isn't exhausting. B. It is good for health.
C. It brings pleasure. D. It is like going to the gym.
35. What is Chalmin-Pui's attitude to the new gardeners' gardening
A. Carefree. B. Supportive C. Tolerant. D. Indifferent.

Richard Dermer is a pizza shop owner. But he is better known for his hobby. As a extraordinary kite collector, people are impressed by kites covering the walls from all over the world when they walk into his pizza shop.
Dermer worked at Hideaway. He bought the pizza shop in 1960. Then, in 1970, his game-partner and manager at Hideaway was the first to market the Japanese version of the game Go in the United States. It was this game that led Dermer to kites, and from there he took off—eventually becoming president of the American Kiefliers Association.
Dermer now has a huge kite collection. He told Collectors Weekly, “Initially, I was a novice, but I enjoyed learning, trying to acquire more about kites. And the more I got into kite festivals and collecting kites, the more I discovered and the deeper the subject became.”
What Dermer’s collection and hobby brings to the United States is an international perspective and history on kite flying. In India for example, kite flying is a fierce, sometimes violent sport, while in Thailand, kite battles reflect the war of the sexes between men and women. Kites were used in World War II, to distract German planes and for target practice.
When Dermer started stunt kite (特技风筝), it was pretty new. All the kites were triangular, and they all looked the same. But soon with his efforts, that changed. People could see kites of all shapes, sizes and colors flying in the sky. During the 1980s and 1990s kites went through quite a developmental stage where they were getting better and better as new lighter, stronger materials were being developed. Dermer even set up the new rules for judging these stunt kite competitions, which take into account how much control the flier has, and the difficulty of the moves.

A. A plane pilot. B. A food businessman.
C. A kite seller. D. A sales manager.
5. What does the underlined word “novice” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Advanced person. B. Learned person.
C. Inexperienced person. D. Well-known person.
6. What can we learn about the kites from paragraph 4

C. Kites played a part in World War II. D. Flying kites is an interesting sport in India.
7. With the efforts of Richard Dermer, kites became ________.
A. portable B. diverse C. available D. delicate

To me, Shakespeare is a bit of a touchy subject in the theatre industry. I believe Shakespeare’s plays to be the most challenging in terms of language. When you have challenging language, then understanding the plot and topics will become a challenge as well. It’s like a chain. If you don’t understand it from the start, it makes things hard later on and people tend to give up on it. Regardless of all of this, I believe Shakespeare is important in the sense that it’s where true theatre started. William Shakespeare is a name everyone knows regardless of whether you enjoy his works or not.
Many high schools or colleges put on at least one Shakespeare play every few years and I like that. I think it’s important to expose students to plays that are a bit more challenging than they used to be. Of course. it’s not easy to understand these plays but then think about the people who act in those plays. When acting, you have to understand your character and not only that, you need to completely know everything going on around you as well. So to understand the script (剧本) is one thing. but to act in a Shakespeare play is a whole another thing. How about memorizing the lines That’s one of the hardest things actors have to get through. It is such heightened language that it’s almost like learning a foreign language. Shakespeare is tough and that’s what I think I love it the most. The challenge is understanding. Once you have that then you have room to play with it.
Therefore, if people walked into a Shakespeare play with more of an open mind, their experience would be so much better. There is a large amount of exploration and discovery in his plays and the experience can be really satisfying. It’s hard stuff, but it’s fascinating and we should be embracing it.
8. What’s the biggest challenge in understanding Shakespeare’s plays
A. The challenging language. B. The variety of its topic.
C. The complicated plot. D. The memorable characters.
9. What’s the author’s attitude towards putting on Shakespeare’s plays at colleges
A. Critical. B. Cautious.
C. Favorable. D. Indifferent.
10. What does the text suggest people do when enjoying Shakespeare’s plays
A. Act them out. B. Remember the lines in them.
C. Learn Shakespeare’s language. D. Enjoy them with an open mind.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. The characteristics of Shakespeare’s plays.
B. The plots and topics of Shakespeare’s plays.
C. The importance and way of enjoying Shakespeare’s plays.
D. The stress from performing Shakespeare’s plays.
D
Although air travel comes with jet lag, delays and awful food, it offers a brief digital detox—a precious few hours away from the wave of emails, messages and app announcements. But not anymore, In flight Wi-Fi is getting faster and cheaper, and is an increasingly common offering on budget and flagship airlines.
But how does in-flight Wi-Fi actually work To simplify, there are two ways for an internet signal to reach your device when you’re up in the clouds. The first is via ground based mobile broadband towers, which send signals up to the aircraft’s antennas (天线). As you travel into different sections of airspace, the plane automatically connects to signals from the nearest tower, so there is (in theory at least) no interruption to your Internet. But if you’re passing over large areas of water or particularly remote zones, connectivity can be an issue.
The second method uses satellite technology. Planes connect to satellites in space (35,000 km above the planet), which send and receive signals via receivers and transmitters. Information is transmitted to and from your smart phone via an antenna on the top of the aircraft. These are the same satellites that are used in television signals and weather forecasting. Information is passed between the ground and the plane via the satellite.
All of that technology is expensive. The costs are usually passed on to customers. Over half of the world’s aircraft will be equipped with in-flight Wi-Fi within the next few years. It is set to become a billion-dollar industry by 2020. In the near future you’ll need to find a better excuse than “Sorry I missed your message—I was on a plane”.
12. What sends signals up to the aircraft’s antennas
A. Internet companies. B. Ground-based receivers.
C. Budget and flagship airlines. D. Ground-based mobile broadband towers.
13. Who will pay for the in-flight Wi-Fi technology in the end
A. Aircraft passengers. B. Satellite company.
C. Broadband towers. D. The local government.
14. What can we infer about in-flight Wi-Fi from the last paragraph
A. It serves every customer. B. It has a bright future.
C. It develops very slow. D. It’s a high-tech industry.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. How to Use In-flight Wi-Fi B. Why Only Some Airlines Have In-flight Wi-Fi
C. Why Is In-flight Wi-Fi Expensive D. How Wi-Fi Works on a Plane
