“You're never too old to pick up a book and read with a child.” That's the message the National Education Association (NEA) hopes to get out during this year's Read Across America festival. The event was celebrated on March 2, the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.
Read Across America began 19 years ago as a way to get kids excited about reading. “You have this magical thing happen when an adult sits with a kid and turns the pages,” said Lily Eskelsen Garcia, the NEA president. “The whole point is making it fun, not for the next test.”
That fun involves celebrating the funny characters created by Dr. Seuss. This year, as one of the sponsors (赞助商) of Read Across America, Southwest Airlines made their flight attendants (空乘) on some flights wear red-and-white hats to make more people learn about the event.
Kids can celebrate Read Across America with any book. But in honor of Dr. Seuss, they might want to pick up his most recent new work, What Pet Should I Get It was discovered 20 years after Dr. Seuss's death and four years later came off the press in July of 2015. In the book, a brother and a sister visit a pet shop and have trouble choosing just one animal to bring home.
Anyone can participate in Read Across America. All it takes is grabbing a book and a few loved ones, and sharing in the joy of reading. “Taking out that book, like I'm going to do on March 2, and looking at those who'll clap their hands and start reading the book with you, because they've memorized it, you can tell someone has lovingly sat with them and read it,” Eskelsen Garcia says.

A. By organizing a lot of celebrations.

A. Because it is easy to carry out.
B. Because it hands on many books.
C Because its activities last long.
D. Because it involves famous writers.

Every year on April 1, April Fools’ Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. In France, it’s called “Poisson d’ Avril” or “Fish of April”. In Scotland, the holiday is often called “Gowkie Day”. In Iraq, the holiday is called “Kithbet Neesan” or “April Lie”.
History experts say people have celebrated April Fools’ Day for a long time. Some believe the tradition comes from the ancient Romans more than two thousand years ago. It was a day of playing games and pretending to be someone else.
Others say the day for fooling began in France in 1564, when King Charles changed the yearly calendar. He moved New Year’s Day from April 1 to January 1. Many people did not know about the change because of communication problems back then. Some people continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1. Other people called them April Fools and played jokes on them.
In the United States, April Fools’ Day is just a day of joking and making fun of friends. These kinds of jokes are also called pranks. These jokes typically end in the prankster shouting “April Fools’!”
Simple pranks, like telling a friend a funny lie or making prank phone calls, are still common. But, major companies also get in on April Fools’ Day fun in a much bigger way. A few years ago, on April 1, Starbucks announced it was introducing new coffee cup sizes—Plenta and Micra. The very large cups, bigger than a human head, remained useful for customers even after finishing all that coffee. According to Starbucks, the cups could be used as a rain hat, a pot for plants, or a lampshade (灯罩). It did not take long for customers to catch on to the prank!

The message was not a joke. "Susan Hicks” was actually 20 — year — old Taija Laitinen, a student working late at night at a college library near Helsinki, Finland — almost 7,000miles away from Sean's home in Texas. We have to admit that reading is not a pleasant thing at school . Reading is not based on a child's interests, but to cope with tests. When children are little we make them read aloud, before the teacher and other children, so that we can be sure they “know” all the words they are reading. This means that when they don't know a word, they are going to make a mistake, right in front of everyone. After having taught fifth-grade classes for four years, I decided to try at all costs to rid them of their fear and dislike of books, and to get them to read oftener and more adventurously.
One day, I said to them, “Now, I would like you to read a lot of books this year, but I want you to read them only for fun. I am not going to ask you questions to find out whether you understand the books or not to ask you what words mean. If you understand enough of a book to enjoy it and want to go on reading it, that's enough for me.”
The children sat shocked and silent. Was this a teacher talking One girl, who had just come to us from a school where she had had a very hard time, looked at me steadily for a long time after I had finished. Then, still looking at me, she said slowly and seriously, "Mr. Holt, do you really mean that ” I said just as seriously, "I mean every word of it.”
Later, she really astonished me. One day, she was reading at her desk. From a glimpse of the illustrations I thought she was reading Moby Dick(白鲸).I said, "Don't you find parts of it rather heavy going ” She answered, "Oh, sure, but I just skip over those parts and go on to the next good part.”
This is exactly what reading should be. Let the students make their own decisions, find something, dive into it, take the good parts, skip the bad parts, get what you can out of it and go on to something else.
32. What did the teacher tell his students to read for
A. For pleasure. B. For knowledge.
C. For a larger vocabulary. D. For higher scores in exams.
33. On hearing the teacher's talk, how did the children probably feel

A. She skipped over those easy parts while reading.
B. She turned out to be a top student through reading.
C. She had a hard time finishing the required reading tasks.
D. She learned to appreciate some parts of the difficult books.
35. What is the teacher's point of view in the passage
A. Reading requires teachers' guidance.
B. Reading helps students do well in school.
C. Children should be left to decide what to read.
D. Children can not tell good parts from bad ones.
