I’m 16. On a recent night, while I was busy thinking about important social issues, like what to do over the weekend and who to do it with, I overheard my parents talking about my future. My dad was upset not the usual stuff that he and Mom and, I guess, a lot of parents worry about like which college I’m going to, how far away it is from home and how much it’s going to cost. Instead, he was upset about the world his generation is turning over to mine, a world he fears has a dark and difficult future—if it has a future at all.
He sounded like this: “There will be a pandemic that kills millions, a devastating energy crisis, a horrible worldwide depression and a nuclear explosion set off in anger.”
As I lay on the living room couch, eavesdropping(偷听) on their conversation, starting to worry about the future my father was describing, I found myself looking at some old family photos.
There was a picture of my grandfather in his Citadel uniform. He was a member of the class of 1942, the war class. Next to his picture were photos of my great-grandparents, Ellis Island immigrants. Seeing those pictures made me feel a lot better. I believe the world my generation grows into is going to get better, not worse. Those pictures helped me understand why.
I considered some of the awful things my grandparents and great-grandparents had seen in their life times: two world wars, killer flu, a nuclear bomb. But they saw other things, too, better things: the end of two world wars, the polio(小儿麻痹症) vaccine, passage of the civil rights laws. They even saw the Red Sox won the World Series—twice.
I believe that my generation will see better things, too—that we will witness the time when AIDS is cured and cancer is defeated. I will see things as inconceivable to me today as a moon shot was to my grandfather when he was 16, or the Internet to my father when he was 16. Ever since I was a little kid, whenever I’ve had an awful day, my dad would put his arm around me and promise me that “tomorrow will be a better day.” I challenged my father once, “How do you know that ” He said, “I just do.” I believe him. My great-grandparents believed that, and my grandparents, and so do I.
4. On a recent night, the author’s dad was upset about ________.

B. the coming dark and difficult future
C. a different future for the author’s generation
D. the long distance between the college and the author’s home
5. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE
A. Though the world was full of awful things, it would get better.
B. If you open your heart, you will see that goodness is everywhere.
C. People of different generations have every confidence in their future.
D. The terrible things around us could be a threat to the future generation.
6. What does the author mainly intend to tell us
A. However challenging life is, try to take control of it.
B. Whether you believe or not, wonders will definitely happen.
C. Whenever possible, never hesitate to challenge your parents.
D. Whatever hardships you are suffering, you can expect a better future.

If we were asked exactly what we were doing a year ago, we should probably have to say that we could not remember. But if we had kept a book and had written in it an account of what we did each day, we should be able to give an answer to the question.
It is the same in history. Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them. Sometimes men did keep a record of the most important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by fire or in a war. Sometimes there was never any written record at all because the people of that time and place did not know how to write. For example, we know a good deal about the people who lived in China 4,000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa because they had not learned to write.
Sometimes, of course, even if the people cannot write, they may know something of the past. They have heard about it from older people, and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings, and these have been sung and acted and told for many generations, for most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. This we may call “remembered history”. Some of it has now been written down. It is not so exact or so valuable to us as written history is because words are much more easily changed when used again and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written records, such spoken stories are often very helpful.
8. Which of the following ideas is not suggested in the passage
A. Where there are no written records, there is no history.
B. “Remembered history”, compared with written history, is less reliable.
C. A written account of our daily activities helps us to be able to answer many questions.
D Written records of the past play the most important role in our learning of the human history.
9. We know very little about the central Africa 200 years ago because ________.
A. the people there did not know how to write.
B. the written records were perhaps destroyed by a fire.
C. there was nothing worth being written down at that time.
D. the people there ignored the importance of keeping a record.
10. “Remembered history” refers to ________.
A. stories of important happenings passed down from mouth to mouth.
B. songs and dances about the most important events.
C. history based on a person’s imagination.
D. both A and B.
11. The passage suggests that we could have learned much more about our past than we do now if the ancient people had ________.
A. made more songs and dances.
B. not burnt their written records in wars.
C. kept a written record of every past event.
D. told exact stories of the most important happenings.
D
There is always something that happens in the world that everyone fears will happen to their town, city or country: natural disasters. The scariest part of it is that no one will ever see it coming. Though technology helps us prepare, but it never actually tells the people what time it’s going to hit. It is always estimated, but the result is never 100% accurate.
However, that is not the point of this article. Two different natural disasters in two different parts of the world have happened in the past few weeks. One is a major flood that has hit Louisiana in the United States. The other was an earthquake that hit Amatrice, Italy. However, there is a major difference in the news coverage(新闻报道) of the two tragedies.
As for the flooding in Louisiana, it is reported that this disaster is the worst to hit the United States since super-storm Sandy and it’ll cost at least $30 million. In only the first couple of weeks, 13 people had died. However, like me, many people did not hear about this tragic event. I did not learn about it until about three weeks after it happened.
In Italy, however, it covered all media instantly. The earthquake in Italy happened on Tuesday morning. That same day, I was on Twitter and that was all that was over the news feed. Every other post was about the earthquake. Some would have the opinion that Amatrice, Italy was one of the most beautiful towns in that country. I got in deep sorrow because there were more people killed in this quake than the flooding. So far, they have a total of 73 dead and over one-hundred missing.
I understand that technically the earthquake in Italy was worse than the floods in Louisiana. However, I believe that if a natural disaster happens, they all should be equally covered and taken equally as serious. We are one world united and should be there for all of the people out there who are in need of help. We may not be able to accurately predict disasters, but we can surely lend a hand out for the needy.
12. How does the author develop the passage
A. By narration. B. By comparison.
C. By definition. D. By classification.
13. Why did the author learn about the flood so late
A. He didn’t care about the flood. B. He felt nervous about the news.
C. The media didn’t cover it in time. D. The flood frightened the author a lot.
14. How does the author feel about the earthquake in Italy
A. Proud. B. Critical. C. Pitiful. D. Sad.
15. What does the author really want to say in the text
A. Italy isn’t good at predicting the natural disasters.
B. All natural disasters should be covered equally.
C. The world should be united into one instantly.
D. America should help Italy predict natural disasters.

Zadie Smith has a way with words, even when she's using them to implement (执行)rules in her home. She revealed why she imposed a 15- minute mirror time limit on her daughter Kate.
"I saw that she had just started spending a lot of time looking in mirrors," she said. "It was angering me. I decided to decide .on a principle: that if it takes longer than 15 minutes, don't do it." The rule came into effect when Smith noticed the disparities (不一致)between the amount of me it took her son and daughter to get out of the house in the morning.
"I explained it to her in these terms: you are wasting time, your brother is not going to waste any time doing this," she said. Every day of his life he will put a shirt on, he's out the door and doesn't care if you waste an hour and a half doing your makeup."
Smith went on to say that her daughter saw the limit as a practical time-saving method, so Smith didn't have to give her "a big lecture on female beauty." But she mentioned trends such as contouring (外形修整) as being a waste of time. "She sees me and how I get dressed and how g it takes."
Smith, who herself typically appears in minimal makeup, has explored the relationship women between with themselves in her work, as well, In her book On Beauty, she writes about the struggle protecting daughters from the unavoidable self-esteem struggles associated with being a woman. The beauty of women comes from their confidence and belief of dream rather than their appearance.
Considering that Smith's daughter is only 7 years old, their interaction fully proves how early in life women begin to feel pressure to look n certain way. Having said that, the 15-minute mirror me limit is something we all could carry out in our own lives, whether we're 7 or 70.

D. It makes her understand girls shouldn't wear makeup.
6. What does Smith advise women to do
A. Make up only on special occasions.
B. Build themselves up with the inner qualities.
C. Attend lecturer on female beauty on time.
D. Pay more attention on daily makeup and clothing.
7. How does the author think of Smith's special principle
A. He thinks it's only fit for school-aged girls.
B. He thinks it's merely fit for young girls under 7.
C. He thinks it's fit for women of different ages.
D. He thinks it's fit for middle-aged and old-aged women.

Uber has introduced a motorcycle taxi service in the over-crowded streets of Bangkok.
The move is an effort to respond to what competitor Grab is doing, and Grab already offers a motorcycle option in the Thai capital, called GrabBike.
It isn't Uber's first go at motorcycles. In 2012, the company launched a moto-taxi option in Paris for a few weeks as a short-term experiment. It hasn't tried another motorcycle feature until the Bangkok one, which it has designed for cities in developing countries like Thailand.
Motorbike rides can now be requested like any other Uber taxi on the app in three central Bangkok neighborhoods, and the driver will even show up with a helmet for the passenger.
"Motorcycles are part of the commuting(通勤)culture in Thailand," Douglas Ma said in a Statement, "The new service would create tens of thousands of flexible work opportunities for Thais."
Fares start at 10 baht(28 US cents), and cost an additional 3. 50 baht for each kilometer and 0. 85 baht per minute for every ride—cheaper than the car service.
Bangkok residents reported varying degrees of success at finding available motorcycle taxis in the city after the feature launched Wednesday(February 24, 2016), ranging from a few minutes away to none at all. Uber declined to comment on how many motorcycles are available through the app.
The startup said it has plans to roll out the motorcycle service in other cities in the near future, but it wouldn't clearly state which ones. The taxi -hailing app is in over a dozen Southeast Asian locations, including Bali, Ho Chi Minh City and Singapore.

Sometimes we may find that every week there are a lot of new stories about how climate change is affecting the planet, or new plans to battle its effects. But the concept itself isn't new at all --- in fact, scientists have been exploring questions about climate change for almost 200 years.
The idea of “greenhouse gases” goes back to 1824, when Joseph Fourier wondered what was regulating the earth's temperature. Fourier concluded that the atmosphere must be responsible for containing the heat absorbed from the sun and described it as a box with a glass lid: As light shines through the glass, the inside gets warmer as the lid traps the heat. As Fourier's ideas spread, it came to be called “the greenhouse effect”.
Scientists continued to study the greenhouse effect. Not until a Swedish chemist named Svante Arrhenius came along, did scientists understand how global warming actually works. After years of work, Arrhenius determined that the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere did in fact have a direct effect on global temperatures.
Arrhenius found that CO2, and other gases trap radiation, which warms the atmosphere. Arrhenius was the first to suspect that burning coal could contribute to the greenhouse effect. But Arrhenius welcomed the warming effect on the planet. At a lecture later that year, Arrhenius noted that creatures of a warmer earth “might live under a milder sky and in less barren surroundings”.
While Arrhenius' findings won him the 1903 Nobel Prize in chemistry, scientists kept debating whether the greenhouse effect was increasing until 1950, when researchers finally began to find strong data supporting it. By the end of the 1950s, American scientists had been sounding the alarm on the long-term consequences of climate change. Climate change research has come a long way since Fourier first described the greenhouse effect – still, maybe Arrhenius should have been more careful of what he wished for.

A student with the nickname of "Silo" from University of Wisconsin is eating his way through school competitively. For the time being, Eric Dahl ranks third in the world of competitive eating, which is determined by All Pro Eating rankings, though he once held the top spot. So far Dahl has earned more than 18,000 dollars in prize money or merchandise to help pay for his education.
"I'm eating for my education," Eric Dahl said in a proud tone. "I think it will help me get through and achieve my success in my education."
Dahl was drawn to competitive eating in 2011, at the former Big Red's Steakhouse in Madison. Dahl didn't want to pay for his meal so he signed up for a challenge: eat a three-pound cheese-steak sandwich in less than 10 minutes and skip the bill. He finished his eating within 5 minutes and 50 seconds.
Dahl's first pay came from Dickey's Barbecue Pit in suburban Minneapolis, where he earned $250 for eating nine pulled pork sandwiches within six minutes. The former high school athlete found the competition and its over-the-top atmosphere reminding him of professional wrestling.
"I really get pumped when the crowd starts cheering," he said, "I am friends with other competitive eaters, but once I'm on stage I don't have any friends but we have become opponents."
Dahl said he walks a few miles a day, lifts weights twice a week and plays soccer and hockey to maintain his 220-pound weight. He eats no more than 3,100 calories a day, mostly vegetables to avoid increasing his waistline, and stretches his stomach by eating 10 pounds of cabbage or broccoli in a single sitting followed by a lot of water.
His next bout is scheduled for this Saturday. Dahl will try to win $1,000 at a national pizza-eating contest on Library Mall at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Good luck to him and let's wait for his good news.

With fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial complexes for the recycling of waste. The word “rubbish” could lose its meaning because everything which goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else.
The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.
Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: First, it will pass through sharp metal bars (金属条) which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that founders and rollers will break up everything that can be broken. Finally, the rubbish will pass under magnets (磁铁), which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage.
The first full-scale giant recycling plants are perhaps fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps (垃圾场), some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.
8. What is NOT mentioned as a part of the recycling process described in Paragraph 3
A. Sharpening metal bars.
B. Sorting out small pieces of metal.

Everywhere I look outside my home I see people busy on their high-tech devices, while driving, walking, shopping, even sitting in toilets. When connected electronically, they are away from physical reality.
People have been influenced to become technology addicted. One survey reported that "addicted" was the word most commonly used by people to describe their relationship to iPad and similar devices. One study found that people had a harder time resisting the allure of social media than they did for sleep, cigarettes and alcohol.
The main goal of technology companies is to get people to spend more money and time on their products, not to actually improve our quality of life. They have successfully created a cultural disease. Consumers willingly give up their freedom, money and time to catch up on the latest information, to keep pace with their peers or to appear modern.
I see people trapped in a pathological(病态的) relationship with time-sucking technology, where they serve technology more than technology serves them. I call this technology servitude. I am referring to a loss of personal freedom and independence because of uncontrolled consumption of many kinds of devices that eat up time and money.
What is a healthy use of technology devices That is the vital question. Who is really in charge of my life That is what people need to ask themselves if we are to have any chance of breaking up false beliefs about their use of technology. When we can live happily without using so much technology for a day or a week, then we can regain control and personal freedom, become the master of technology and discover what there is to enjoy in life free of technology. Mae West is famous for proclaiming the wisdom that "too much of a good thing is wonderful." But it's time to discover that it does not work for technology.
Richard Fernandez an executive coach at Google acknowledged that "we can be swept away by our technologies." To break the grand digital connection people must consider how life long ago could be fantastic without today's overused technology.
12. What does the underlined word "allure" in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Advantage. B. Attraction. C. Adaption. D. Attempt.
13. What is the purpose of technology companies
A. To attract people to buy their products. B. To provide the latest information.
C. To improve people's quality of life. D. To deal with cultural diseases.
14. What can we infer from the passage
A. People will get sick when using technology.
B. People have realized the harm of high-tech devices.
C. People can regain freedom without high-tech devices.
D. People may enjoy life better without overused technology.
15. What's the author's attitude towards the overusing of high-tech devices
A. Neutral. B. Indifferent. C. Disapproving. D. Supportive.

根据文章第一段中“Instead, he was upset about the world his generation is turning over to mine, a world he fears has a dark and difficult future—if it has a future at all. (相反,他对他这一代人正在移交给我的世界感到不安,他担心这个世界有一个黑暗而艰难的未来——如果它有未来的话)”可知,作者的父亲担心这个世界有一个黑暗而艰难的未来。故选B项。
2. 细节理解题。根据文章第五段和第六段的“I considered some of the awful things my grandparents and great-grandparents had seen in their life times: two world wars, killer flu, a nuclear bomb. But they saw other things, too, better things: the end of two world wars, the polio vaccine, passage of the civil rights laws. They even saw the Red Sox won the World Series — twice. I believe that my generation will see better things, too — that we will witness the time when AIDS is cured and cancer is defeated(我想到了我的祖父母和曾祖父母一生中看到的一些可怕的事情:两次世界大战、致命流感、核弹。但他们也看到了其他更好的事情:两次世界大战的结束、小儿麻痹症疫苗、民权法的通过。他们甚至看到红袜队两次赢得世界大赛冠军。我相信,我们这一代人也会看到更好的事情,我们将见证艾滋病治愈、战胜癌症的时代.)”可知,作者认为父辈们遭遇了可怕的事情,但是也见证了更好的事情,自己这一代人虽然也面对了苦难,但也会见证更好的事情。由此可知,A项“Though the world was full of awful things, it would get better. (虽然世界充满了可怕的事情,但是它会变得更好)”陈述正确。故选A项。
根据文章最后一段中“Ever since I was a1itt1e kid, whenever I’ve had an awful day, my dad would put his arm around me and promise me that ‘tomorrow will be a better day.’ I challenged my father once, ‘How do you know that ’ He said, ‘I just do.’ I believe him. My great-grandparents believed that, and my grandparents, and so do I.
根据后文“a moon shot was to my grandfather when he was16, or the Internet to my father when he was16(对于16岁的祖父来说的一次登月,又或者对于16岁的父亲来说的网络)”可知,“登月对于16岁的祖父”,“网络对于16岁的父亲”来说,都是难以想象的事情。
A 9. A 10. D 11. C
根据第三段中“Sometimes, of course, even if the people cannot write, they may know something of the past. They have heard about it from older people, and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings, and these have been sung and acted and told for many generations, for most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. (当然,有时候,即使人们不会写字,他们也会对过去有所了解。他们从年纪大的人那里听说这件事,经常制作关于最重要的事情的歌曲、舞蹈和故事,这些被唱出来、表演出来并被传颂许多代,因为大多数人都以讲述他们的父亲过去的事迹为荣。)”可知,即使没有文字记载,历史也可以通过其它方式记录下来,所以A项“没有文字记载,就没有历史”不是文章要表达的观点。故选A。
根据第二段中“But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa because they had not learned to write. (但我们对200年前生活在非洲中部的人们几乎一无所知。因为他们还没学会写字。)”可知,我们对200年前的中非知之甚少,因为那里的人不会写字。故选A。
根据第三段中“They have heard about it from older people, and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings, and these have been sung and acted and told for many generations, for most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. This we may call “remembered history”. (他们从年纪大的人那里听说这件事,经常制作关于最重要的事情的歌曲、舞蹈和故事,这些被唱出来、表演出来并被传颂许多代,因为大多数人都以讲述他们的父亲过去的事迹为荣。我们可以把这叫做“Remembered history”。)”可知,Remembered history指的是口口相传的重要事件的故事和关于最重要事件的歌舞。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“If we were asked exactly what we were doing a year ago, we should probably have to say that we could not remember. But if we had kept a book and had written in it an account of what we did each day, we should be able to give an answer to the question. (如果有人问我们一年前到底在做什么,我们可能不得不说我们不记得了。但是,如果我们有一个本子,把我们每天所做的事情记录下来,我们就能回答这个问题。)”和第二段中“It is the same in history. Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them. (历史上也是如此。许多事情已经被遗忘,因为我们没有任何书面记录。)”可推知,如果古人对过去的每一件事都有文字记录,我们可能会比现在更了解我们的过去。故选C。

【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“However, that is not the point of this article. Two different natural disasters in two different parts of the world have happened in the past few weeks. One is a major flood that has hit Louisiana in the United States. The other was an earthquake that hit Amatrice, Italy. However, there is a major difference in the news coverage(新闻报道) of the two tragedies.”(然而,这不是本文的重点。
根据第三段的“However, like me, many people did not hear about this tragic event. I did not learn about it until about three weeks after it happened.”(然而,和我一样,很多人并没有听说这个悲惨的事件。
根据第四段中“I got in deep sorrow because there were more people killed in this quake than the flooding.”(我陷入了深深的悲伤,因为在这次地震中丧生的人比洪水还多。)
根据最后一段的“However, I believe that if a natural disaster happens, they all should be equally covered and taken equally as serious.”(然而,我认为,如果发生自然灾害,它们都应该被同等地报道,同等地对待其严重性。)

根据第三段中“Dahl was drawn to competitive eating in 2011, at the former Big Red's Steakhouse in Madison. Dahl didn't want to pay for his meal so he signed up for a challenge: eat a three-pound cheese-steak sandwich in less than 10 minutes and skip the bill.”
根据倒数第二段“Dahl said he walks a few miles a day, lifts weights twice a week and plays soccer and hockey to maintain his 220-pound weight. He eats no more than 3,100 calories a day, mostly vegetables to avoid increasing his waistline, and stretches his stomach by eating 10 pounds of cabbage or broccoli in a single sitting followed by a lot of water.” 故选A。

根据第三段关键句“First, it will pass through sharp metal bars (金属条) which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed”可知,首先,垃圾会穿过锋利的金属条,这些金属条会撕开通常用来装垃圾的塑料袋。 故选A项。
根据最后一段关键句“Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps (垃圾场), some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.”
根据第一段关键句“The word “rubbish” could lose its meaning because everything which goes into the dumps would be made into something useful.”

B 13. A 14. D 15. C
根据画线词上文“People have been influenced to become technology addicted. One survey reported that "addicted" was the word most commonly used by people to describe their relationship to iPad and similar devices.(人们已经被影响到对科技上瘾。一项调查显示,人们最常用“上瘾”一词来形容他们与iPad及类似设备的关系)”可知,人们已经被影响到对科技上瘾。所以一项研究发现,人们在抗拒社交媒体的吸引力时,比抗拒睡眠、香烟和酒精时更困难。故画线词的意思是“吸引力”。A. Advantage.优点;B. Attraction.吸引力;C. Adaption.改编;D. Attempt.
根据第三段中“The main goal of technology companies is to get people to spend more money and time on their products, not to actually improve our quality of life.( 科技公司的主要目标是让人们在他们的产品上花更多的钱和时间,而不是提高我们的生活质量)”可知,现代科技公司的主要目标是吸引人们购买其产品。故选A。
根据第五段中“That is what people need to ask themselves if we are to have any chance of breaking up false beliefs about their use of technology. When we can live happily without using so much technology for a day or a week, then we can regain control and personal freedom, become the master of technology and discover what there is to enjoy in life free of technology.”
通读全文,尤其是第四段中“I see people trapped in a pathological (病态的) relationship with time-sucking technology, where they serve technology more than technology serves them.”
