The Difference a Teacher Can Make
Steve,a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic parents, was about to be lost forever by the U.S.education system.Remarkably,he could read, yet,he was failing. He had been failing since first grade.Though Steve looked bigger than his age,yet he went unnoticed...until Miss White.
Miss White was a smiling, young, beautiful lady!Steve liked his new teacher;yet, still he failed. He never did his homework.Whenever he was punished for failing to turn in his homework,he felt just terrible!Still,he did not study.
Last week, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills.Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school, but in the woods, where he often stayed alone after school. He was always alone because no one cared.Oddly,Steve never missed a day of school.
One day,Miss White's impatient voice broke into his daydreams.
“Steve!” Shocked,he turned to look at her.
“Pay attention!” Miss White began to go over the test results for the seventh grade.“You all did pretty well,” she told the class,“except for one boy,and it breaks my heart to tell you this,but...” She hesitated, pinning Steve to his seat with a sharp stare.“The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!” She just stared at Steve,as the class turned around for a good lonk.Steve dropped his eyes and carefully examined his fingertips.
“Just try it!ONE WEEK!” He was unmoved.
“You're smart enough! You'll see a change!” Nothing changed him.
“Give yourself a chance!Don't give up on your life!” Nothing.“Steve! Please!I care about you!”

It was the summer when I turned 18. I was filled with excitement because of my new freedom of driving. I drove carefully with my new license. Along with this new privilege came new responsibilities. I would perform the same routine — call my parents and tell them where I was going, who I was with, and when I would be home. It became a typical cycle.
I had been working all day in the hot sun. I was exhausted and ready for a nap. But my stomach told me something different. So I called my friend Mike and made our way into town. After our meal, we had no idea that our day would soon change for the worse.
It takes one moment to shift your life upside down. I vividly remember I was driving fast. Too fast. I came to the conclusion two years later, that the mistake would be with me for the rest of my life.
Mike and I were driving down a dusty gravel(沙砾) road. I was driving a shiny black Saturn, which was the car I admired for long. I was very proud to be driving it. It was perfect in my eyes. I could see the rolling hills in the distance. Tall pine trees traveled on both sides of the road. With the music playing, we were enjoying ourselves. Somehow, without realizing it, I sped up the car.
Coasting(滑行) freely in my car, we came across a loose spot of gravel. My tyres were stuck in it and desperate to escape. My car started fishtailing. In panic, I pressed hard on the brakes(刹车) and instantly the car lost control. I got into panic, frozen with terror. Looking to the right, I took a glimpse of Mike. His body had leaned toward me. He was trying to prepare himself for the coming crash. The car was rushing left to right, coasting along the gravel like it was ice. Moments later, the front of my car crashed head-on into a tree.

第二节 (满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为 150 左右。
Asa father, I was always seeking for opportunities to teach my son how to balance risk with freedom.
Last month, I bought four little chicks. I decided to make a beautiful coop (鸡笼) for them. In the next few weeks, I, together with my son Gordon, spent all our spare time in the garage. Finally, the coop was finished.
While admiring his well-made handwork, Gordon suddenly raised his head and asked, “Dad, shall we lock the chicks in the coop all the time I am afraid they will be attacked by some fierce animals or become someone’s chicken soup ” Seeing his anxious look, I cracked a smile and asked, “Do you want to be trapped in a limited room or have the freedom to get around ” Hesitant for a while, he murmured, “Freedom, of course.” “Chicks will also think so.” Therefore, our chicks were often seen chasing around in the lawns (草坪), digging for bugs in the bushes and laying eggs in the yard.
Yesterday, we needed to go downtown to shop for food supply after lunch. Knowing that the chicks wouldn’t go very far, we left home with them running around the lawn. When we got back, the first thing Gordon did was to check on his chicks. There were only three chicks in the yard. Their feathers were no longer fair and smooth but dirty and tangled (乱糟糟的). Hearing our steps, they jumped to their feet and scattered in all directions, seeming to have just experienced a terrifying disaster. Worse still, Pecky, Gordon’s favourite chick was nowhere to be found.
We searched the yard inch by inch and found some feathers littering the yard. Seeing this, Gordon’s eyes got watery. I picked Gordon up and comforted him. As we began to accept the fact that we were now a three-chick family, we heard it---a soft clucking (咯咯声) sound under a bush.
Para1: I put Gordon down and we looked under the bush.
Para2: The next day Gordon offered to have a talk with me.

【答案】I heard a loud sound of my car hitting the tree. The white airbag hit Mike violently. His body flew back in the seat like a rag doll. My body was thrown forward, meeting the seat belt I was thankfully wearing. The window was broken, and the passenger door was destroyed. The feeling of guilt oyerwhelmed me. It was all my fault. I put Mike’s life in danger. I wish I could go back and avoid putting my friend’s life at risk.
Luckily enough, Mike and I were not so seriously hurt. It made me feel more relaxed that people who witnessed the accident ran to us and sent us to the hospital immediately. We both recovered soon, but my heart was heavy for a long time after the incident, from which I learned to cherish the life. From then on, I drove carefully and obeyed the traffic rules. After all, nothing is more precious than life.

possible version :
I put Gordon down and we looked under the bush. In sight was a trembling little figure. “It’s Pecky!” Gordon yelled. Seeing Gordon, Pecky raised its head, flapped its wings, trying to stand up but failed. Obviously, its left leg was terribly injured. Gordon picked it up with great care. Later, after checking the security camera, we finally knew the whole story: a hungry wild cat had stolen into the lawn and chased the chicks crazily. Unbelievably, all the chicks magically survived, despite the fact that Pecky was stuck in the bush.
The next day Gordon offered to have a talk with me. “Dad, we must lock the chicks in the coop.” He was half crying and his eyes went red. Looking into his eyes, I said softly, “Risk is part of our life. We will never give up freedom for fear of risk. Do you think the chicks will survive without the freedom to run every day ” After a pause, I continued, “We can be more careful next time. OK ” Seemingly having fully understood, Gordon nodded in agreement.
