Films to watch this December!
Don't Look Up
People are often slow to react to a disaster# whether it’s a climate emergency or a global pandemic—and that is why Adam McKay has made his new satire (讽刺)--Don't Look Up. The original 1961 film of West Side Story is known as one of the finest Hollywood musicals ever made. It was the biggest box-office hit of the year, and went on to win 10 Oscars. I got my first job at 12 as a waitress. It certainly was tiring but interesting. And when I went on to college, it paid for tuition and housing and eventually, a camera.
From the moment I picked up a camera, I was attracted. All I wanted to do was take pictures for the university newspaper, the Minnesota Daily. The paper at that time was one of the largest in the state and was produced by young journalists who went on to work at every major magazine in the country. For the final two years, I just wanted to be a photographer. The week I finished college, I was hired by the Worthington Daily Globe.
Jim Vance was the top-notch publisher of the Globe. He had very high expectations of all the staff. With little or no instruction from him, 35 writers and photographers were expected to fill the paper with stories that were important to our readers. It was perfect training for my future career at National Geography.
I was the youngest photographer working for National Geography when I arrived in 1978, and I spent at least a decade just trying not to make mistakes. While I was grateful for the opportunity, it was very difficult for me. With each new task came the fear that this was going to be the one where they figured out that I couldn't do the job. On many tasks, the most challenging part turned out to be the transportation. Over the years, I traveled by horse, car, train, truck and all sorts of old vehicles. I traveled by mule in Mexico, by ship along the Indian Ocean, by fishing boat in the Sea of Galilee, Wherever I traveled in the world, I wanted my pictures to make a real difference in people's lives.
I am deeply grateful for the amazing lessons photography has taught me. I've learnt that women really do hold up half the sky; that language isn't always necessary, but touch usually is; that all people are not alike, but they do mostly have the same hopes and fears.

Cooking with steam is of great importance in Chinese cuisine. It's one of the best ways to lock the original flavors in the ingredients.
Vegetables are healthy and full of fiber, and steaming is a quick way to cook them without using much oil. Chinese cabbage is a perfect vegetable to steam: crunchy, tender, less fibrous and mildly sweet. The tender cabbage can be steamed directly with a simple sauce consisting of garlic paste, soy sauce and sugar. Root vegetables like sweet potatoes are also great for steaming. They can be cut into thick sticks or slices and then steamed until the center becomes soft. Thin pieces of carrots, fresh sophora flowers (槐花)can be coated with dry flour and then steamed This quick dish is usually served with a garlic paste and vinegar sauce.
Steaming fish, shrimp and crabs is all about preserving the original taste, so freshness is the absolute No. 1 rule when we shop for seafood to be steamed. For fine foods from a river, lake or sea, they must be freshly caught the day you buy them. Frozen fish is seldom steamed directly, because there can be a stronger fishy smell and taste. With all the internal organs and scales removed and blood cleaned, the fish is packed with slices of ginger and scallions (姜和葱)that can neutralize the fishiness. It's then placed in a steamer that has been preheated to boil, and cooked for 8 to 10 minutes depending on the size of the fish. The final step is to place scallions on top of the steamed fish. Then, in a small pot, heat up some oil and pour it across the body of the fish to help the flavor release. Next, drizzle (浇)a couple spoons o seasoned soy sauce for seafood around the plate and serve. When eating the fish, it's best to dip it in the sauce for the sweet taste,

There is new hope for the future of a population of endangered butterflies in the American state of California. Last year, a count of the orange — and — black Western monarchs reached a record low of about 1, 900. But this year, butterfly counters are reporting tens of thousands more Western monarchs. The insects live along California's central coast in winter.
The non-profit science group Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation carries out the official study every year. It just opened the first period of this year's count on November 13. But it says early reports are positive.
Sarina Jepsen is director of Endangered Species at Xerces Society. She says volunteer counters have reported the presence of as many as 50,000 monarchs in the last few weeks. Jepsen says the finding is "... not a recovery, but we're really optimistic and just really glad that there are monarchs here and that gives us a bit of time to work toward recovery of the Western monarch migration.”
In the 1980s, millions of Western monarchs gathered in trees from northern California down to western Mexico. Now, their wintering sites are mostly on California's central coast.
Western monarch butterflies travel south from the Pacific Northwest to California each winter. They return to the same places and even the same trees, where they gather. The monarchs usually arrive in California at the beginning of November. They spread across the country once warmer weather arrives in March.
The Western monarch butterfly population has decreased by more than 99 percent since the 1980s. Scientists do not know why the population increased this year. But Jepsen said it is likely a combination of reasons, including better conditions on their breeding grounds(繁殖地).Pacific Grove, California, known as "Butterfly Town, USA”, has worked for years to help the decreasing monarch population- The city holds a parade to celebrate the butterflies every October. It also bans human interference with the monarchs. The crime carries a $1,000 fine.
Monarch butterflies lack state and federal legal protection that could keep their grounds from being destroyed- Last year, the butterflies failed to gain federal protection But the insects are now among the candidates for listing under the federal Endangered Species Act.

My wife has watched me write, blog and make speeches for a few years now. I’ve encouraged her to do her own video blog (vlog), too, because she is always watching them, but she hasn’t been interested in the spotlight.
Now that enough time has passed, she is ready to go for it! Angelika is a great cook, so she is going to do a cooking show. I am just thrilled that she has found a passion to pursue in a way that works for her.
I’m smart enough to step back and let her go at her own pace. I know that being there for emotional support or however she needs me is important. Now that my wife will have a studio worthy of her talents and personality, she will only make the kitchen look better.
Part of me hopes that I will spend the rest of my life watching and tasting her creations. When you start to express your creative drive, it can be a wonderful ride. When the love of your life takes the ride with you, and starts to drive, it’s pretty cool way to travel through life.
I am at my best when being creative, whether in front of a keyboard or a live audience. I have always encouraged creative answers to life. There is always more than one right way to do something.
Yes, public attention in our social media world has become a marker of success, but it means more when you are sending a positive message. Helping people enjoy their lives a little more is a big deal.
This project will not just make her happy but make us closer. I am aware that this is her project, not mine. I will answer any questions she asks but be careful about offering unwanted advice. What she doesn't know she will learn. You never want to take that process away from anyone.

If you visit Rwanda’s capital city of Kigali, you’ll see how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the city. There are dozens of hand-washing basins at the city’s bus stations that allow passengers to wash their hands before getting on the bus. Layla Mc Cay, director of the Centre for Urban Design and Mental Health in the AUAS told the BBC, “If everyone was washing their hands actively, we would see a reduction in all types of infection.”
In fact, every time there is a serious disease outbreak somewhere in the world, city planners come up with new ideas to fight it. Pandemics have been shaping our cities for a long time.
In 1854, for example, a cholera (霍乱) outbreak in London, UK led to the design of modem sewers (下水道).At that time, Londoners’ drinking water came from groundwater. It was heavily polluted by wastewater. The sewer system separated the wastewater from the groundwater. This stopped the spread of cholera.“By sewering certain towns in England, the death rate from lung diseases alone was reduced by 50 percent,” George Pierson wrote in his book The Separate System of Sewerage.
In New York,US,tuberculosis(肺结核)killed many people in the early 1900s. One reason was the overcrowded conditions in apartment buildings. Eventually the New York government made laws that required all apartments to have air shafts, windows, running water and indoor toilets.
During this year’s pandemic, Mayor of Paris Anne Hidaogo introduced the idea of decentralizing the city——every neighborhood should have a mix of stores, homes, offices, and other important buildings. Every basic need should be just a 15-minute walk away. This would reduce crowding on public transportation and prevent the spread of disease.

Meanwhile, Pete DiPinto,64, a volunteer firefighter, was getting ready for bed when he heard the sound of car crashing coming from not far outside his bedroom. Many may remember the 1998 film Mulan, the story of a young Chinese girl
Pretending to be a man to take her father’s place in the army. After this film was released, McDonald’s began to serve a sauce called Mulan SzeChuan Sauce. Also in 2017,a cartoon show Rick and Morty, which featured a mad scientist and his adventures with his grandson, mentioned the SzeChuan sauce. Many fans have queued up for hours to buy it Packets of the sauce have even appeared on eBay selling for up to $ 250 each.

A really good Sichuan meal is like a rollercoaster ride — you have spicy notes, sweet and sour notes, numbing and gentle flavors,” she says.
From the 1990s, Sichuan food took off. Currently, Sichuan hotpot is a hugely popular dish in China and the West, and dishes such as Mapo Tofu and Gong Bao Chicken are all famous and express the techniques and flavors of Sichuan cooking.
