The Subway Trail was named for its tunnel-shaped canyon(大峡谷). The hike there was described as "very tough", requiring "route finding, stream crossing, and climbing over big rocks”. Nevertheless, I still decided to explore it with my friend, Jessika.
It was sunny when we set out from the trailhead(登山口)at 8 am. Halfway through our ten-mile hike, a light snow began to fall. Soon after, we entered the Subway. Standing in our way was a small pond. Because it looked shallow, we began to walk through.
However, about 1. 5 metres from the edge, my front foot suddenly sank into the sandy bottom. Then I fell forward, and both legs started to sink. The mud came all the way up to both of my legs. I freed my left leg but I couldn't move my right leg at all. Jessika handed me a long stick we'd picked up earlier. I jammed it down the side of my leg and tried to pull my leg out but failed. Jessika started removing sand with both hands, but it was refilling faster than she could pull it out. “Stop!” I shouted. “It's quicksand! You're wasting your energy. ”Though the sinking stopped, it seemed impossible to get out.
The only phone reception was back at the trailhead, five hours away over rough areas. I told Jessika she had to hike back and call for help. She was scared—she'd only ever hiked with me and was afraid of hiking alone on such a difficult trail. But we were out of options.
Thirty minutes after she left, it started to snow heavily. I zipped up my jacket and pulled my head inside. Suddenly I fell backward. I urgently planted my stick into the dry ground and pulled myself upright. I was extremely tired. It had been about five hours since Jessika left, and it was getting dark.

Learning a new language can feel like performing magic. Suddenly, a whole other world opens up and you discover a completely new side of life. Of course, learning a language doesn't happen by magic, but rather through study. Here are some advantages about how the brain changes during language learning.
It sounds like something a child may ask: does learning new things make my brain grow bigger It turns out that this is what language learning does to the brain. The researchers from Lund University in Sweden studied a group of students from the Swedish Armed Forces Interpreter Academy, who were going through a language learning program. For a control group, the researchers selected students who were studying medicine and cognitive(认知的)science at Umea University. The researchers discovered that brain structure changed only in the language learning group. The results suggest that language learning is a promising way to keep the brain in shape, and offers cognitive benefits more than other forms of study.
Many of us dream of being able to focus better, and according to a study published in the journal Brain and Language, learning new languages could help make that dream come true. The researchers from Northwestern University tested bilingual(双语的)and monolingual(单语的)individuals using a language comprehension task. The task involved listening to a word, and then selecting the corresponding image from a group of four. Bilingual participants were obviously better at figuring out the target word. It shows that being bilingual comes with more ability to leave aside unnecessary information, which is key to increasing focus.
Several other studies have shown a link between being bilingual and delaying the beginning of Alzheimer's disease by an average of four years. The reason for this delay, the researchers believe, is that learning a language challenges our gray cells, which helps prevent them from worsening. So just like exercising your body, providing your brain with a workout like learning languages has considerable health benefits.

1.A few hours later, I saw a light through my jacket. I thought it was Jessika coming back. I eagerly pulled down my jacket and shouted, “Jessika, I’m here.” There was no response but dead silence. What was that Was it real or just illusion Some people say a dying person will see imagined things before he goes. I could feel the sand moving slowly around my waist and I was scared, really scared. The only thing I could do was to close my eys and wait and wait.
An hour later, another light shone across my eyes. “Help! Help!” I yelled. A man shouted back as he ran to me, followed by my girlfriend breathlessly. The rescuer was just in time! He threw a long rope towards me with all his might and I instantly caught one end of it. The rescuer together with Jessika started pulling me up inch by inch desperately. When they safely dragged me to the side of the canyon, the three of us sighed in relief. “Thank goodness! Thank you, brother!” I said gratefully, hugging them in my weak muddy arms.
