“What am I doing wrong ” Jasmine Wilson thought to herself as she heavily breathed. And her breaths could be heard from nearby but were drowned out by the firm steps of several pairs of feet hitting the ground, each desperately pushing forward to get to the finishing line before the other. It was her first track meeting, and she had almost given up midway through the race.
She didn’t know why she decided to choose track and field as an after-school activity. As many times as she thought out her reasons as to why she chose to do a sport that requires a lot of hard training instead of something easier, she simply assumed that since it was from her interest, she was willing to try it out.
Track practices were much harder than she thought and very exhausting. At least, that’s what it felt like to her. When she observed her teammates, they were effortlessly working hard. She wanted to be like them, but it was difficult.
“Ms. Wilson, do you have a goal in mind ” Smith Jones, the coach of the track team asked Jasmine one day after practice. “I just want you to think about that. What are you running for Who are you running for What will you get out of this experience, and how will that help your overall goal These are questions that you really need to consider, Ms. Wilson.” The older woman placed a hand on Jasmine’s shoulder with a firm look. “You don’t have to answer me right now, but I look forward to finding it out from you.”
Now, at the race, small beads of sweat ran down the sides of her flushed face and dripped onto the faded letters of the high school track team’s uniform, which was close to her skin. Jasmine could barely focus on the present moment because her heart was pounding too loud in her ears.
“Wilson! Ms.Wilson, are you alright ” The familiar voice made her come back to her senses.

“Happy birthday, dear Rhea, happy birthday to you!” Silence penetrated (穿透) the room.
“Make a wish," my mom said in a sweet whisper. Now, I’m a straight A student, confident and popular, but that’s not what I was a year ago. It was my mom’s love that made me what I am today. Looking around the room filled with my friends, I couldn't help but smile.
I wish...
Memories flooded back. The December morning breeze brushed my long, black hair as I stepped towards the doors of Hagenberg High. It was my first day of school. Only two weeks ago, my mom and I migrated to America, hoping for a bright new life.
My English was poor, and I was alone, like a lost little kid. I unknowingly avoided interacting with anyone because I was afraid they’d laugh in my face. When my English was better, I decided, I would come up to people and maybe manage to say, “Whussup ”
Finally in gym class, a friendly brown face. She almost looked like me, only happier .Her name was Caroline. At lunchtime we found ourselves enjoying the cafeteria food. She wanted me to meet her friends. “Don’t worry Rhea,” she assured me, calling me “sister”, “You’ll fit right in.”
And I did. It was as if some foreign soul entered my body and made me do things against my will. I found myself drinking beer, smoking cigarettes and skipping school. I didn't even like the taste of beer. The moment it touched my tongue I felt like I had to spit it back. But I didn't. I couldn’t afford to look bad and lose my new “friends”. I began to miss at least one day of school a week to hang out with them. Then I missed two, three, even four days in a row.
But while I was out having fun with my “friends,” inside I was full of conflict, unhappiness and regret. I stopped practicing my English sentences in front of the mirror and instead practiced, “I don’t know why the school called, mom. There must be something wrong in the system because I did not miss school today.”

【答案】One possible version:
When she looked up, it was the coach of their team, Smith Jones. “Coach ” called Jasmine, who looked like she was at the edge of crying. “I can’t do this. It is too much tiring and hard, and I couldn’t hold on.” Jasmine was interrupted by the coach, “Don’t you remember those questions I asked you the other day I wanted to see your determination towards reaching your goal! Believe in yourself and your ability to succeed in doing everything and it’ll pay off eventually. Right now, this is just another obstacle that you need to overcome. I believe you.” After hearing her coach’s words, Jasmine was lost in thought.
Jasmine took a deep breath and suddenly felt full of energy. Wiping the beads of sweat away from her face, she now wore a confident expression. “I will get better, no matter how long it takes or hard it may be.” she thought. Thinking of this, she used up all her strength to march on. One circle. Another circle...She kept on running bitterly until she came to her final lap. She gathered up all her strength to rush for the finishing line. The classmates congratulated her, and then she caught a glimpse of her coach, who was smiling at her, nodding. Jasmine ran towards her, giving her a bear hug. “Thank you. It is you who accompany me until the end of the competition and make me realize that I can make it,” exclaimed Jasmine excitedly.

【答案】One day the school teacher called my mom and the truth came out. Mom thanked the teacher for telling her the truth about what happened. Mom and I had a long, calm talk. Mom said she understood my predicament. However, she told me that wanting to fit in and be popular doesn’t mean going out drinking beer, smoking cigarettes and missing school with your so-called friends. A person’s charm comes from one’s own knowledge. My mom believed that I would be an excellent good girl. She told me that always thinking would enable me to find a way out and there were more solutions than difficulties. Later, I broke with my former friends and put all my energy and time into my studies. I finally got excellent grades and was recognized by teachers, parents and friends.
My mom’s voice awakened me from my thoughts, “Have you made your birthday wish yet, sweetie ” “Yes, Mom.” I said. I continued, “I thank my teacher very much for telling you the truth about my performance. Thank you very much for pulling me back when I was confused and degenerated. It was you who gave me hope, support, love and confidence that made me where I am today. I will work harder and do my best in the future. I wish my teachers, parents and friends all health and happiness.”

Emily hurried to the school and nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room.
The fear of being rejected came to strike again. “Jeff Green, Rose Black…” she murmured as her
eyes moved upward. “Wow!” Emily abruptly covered her wide-opened mouth, feeling as if her heart
would jump out. There, at the top of the list was posted her name. The leading singer! However,
whispers around her pulled her back to earth. Just then, she felt a pat on the shoulder. It was Mr.
Butler. “We selected you for our faith in your abilities and voice.” Inspired, Emily practiced even
harder for the day of performance.
Finally the day for the performance came. Emily’s eyes danced with excitement as she stepped
on to the stage. Standing still, she heard noises among the crowd. Obviously not cheers! Emily felt
nervous again and even her legs began trembling. At that moment, her eyes parked on Mr. Butler at
the corner. He nodded and exchanged a determined glance with her, which timely put her heart back
in place. With the music rising, Emily began her singing. Her sweet voice poured and the audience
fell into an abrupt silence. When she finished, the auditorium erupted into a sea of cheers. Emily
White in tears, with so many birth problems in her body, became the shiniest star!
