The British are known to be great sports lovers. When they are neither
playing nor watching games, they like to talk about them. Many of the games we
play now come from Britain.
The British like all kinds of races, including dog races, boat races, and even
races for donkeys. The famous boat race between the teams of Oxford and
Cambridge interests large crowds of people.
One of the most typical British games is cricket. It is often played in schools,
colleges, universities, and by club teams all over the country. Summer isn’t
summer without cricket. To many British people, cricket is both a game and a
standard of behavior. When they consider something unfair, they may say, “It’s
not cricket.”
But as almost everywhere else in the world, the game which draws the
greatest attention in Britain is football, also known as soccer in the USA. Every
Saturday from late August until the beginning of May, large crowds of people
support their favorite sides on football fields. True fans will travel from one end of
the country to the other to see their favorite team play. There are a lot of
professional football clubs all over Britain.
The British also like to play baseball, golf, hockey, and grass-hockey. Many
other sports, such as running, jumping, swimming, boxing are also popular. You
may sometimes hear that there are no winter sports in Britain since the English
weather is not always cold enough to ski or skate. However, winter is a good time
for fishing!
Without doubt, sport in one form or another is an important part of daily life in
Britain.

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Similarly, if we drink a little more
water every day, we may find that we need to go to the doctor less often. A
healthy diet is made up of water and different kinds of foods. We know that
healthy foods like fruits, vegetables and fish , are important as they offer energy
and fiber, without giving us much fat and sugar. But why is water important
The human body needs water to survive. Water is important as it carries
poisons and waste out of our bodies. However, doctors advise us to drink plenty
of water , much more than the small amount we need to stay alive.
Some doctors believe that water is important for health in all kinds of ways.
They believe that many illnesses and health problems appear as a result of
dehydration--a lack of water. Most people are dehydrated (脱水)at least some
of time, although they probably don’t know it. It is surprising to learn that if we
feel thirsty, we are already in the first stages of dehydration. In fact, we are
advised to drink water before we feel thirsty.
These doctors think that health problems such as headaches, high blood
pressure could be helped if people drink more water. They also believe that
drinking more water can help people who are fat. Water contains no calories so it
will not make us gain weight. If we drink water , we will probably drink less sugary
soft drinks. Doctors also believe that drinking more water may stop people from
overeating. They say that many people think that they are hungry when they are,
in fact, thirsty. Doctors suggest, therefore, that we eat less food and drink more
water.
There are still many health problems that cannot be solved by drinking
water, so we should not stop going to see the doctor completely.
28. From the text, we know water can carry______________.
A. energy and fibre in our bodies. B. fruit, vegetables and fish in our bodies.
C. sugar and fat out of our bodies. D. poisons and waste out of our bodies.
29. Lack of water caused many people to put on weight because_____________.
A. It makes them hungry. B. they think they are hungry and eat too much.
C. Water has no calories. D. they think they are thirsty and eat less.
30. Doctors suggest that we should ________________.
A. eat less food and drink less water B. not eat food and just drink water
C. eat less food and drink more water D. eat more food and drink more water
31. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the text _____________
A. People should drink water and not eat fruit.
B. Some health problems appear because of a lack of water.
C. Fruit provides us with energy and fiber .
D. Drinking more water may stop people from overeating.

You cannot judge(判断)a book by looking at its cover! That's what a group
of parents and students in Hangzhou has found out this term.
When they came to school in September, the students were shocked to
learn that their class teacher was to be a P.E. teacher. How could someone who
teaches table tennis and basketball know anything about academics Their
parents were equally worried and pressured the school to replace ''Miss Muscle''
with a ''Miss Brain. '' However, the principal(校长) did not give in to the pressure
and now the parents and students are happy that the school firmly insisted.
After three months, the P.E. teacher, whose name is actually Miss Su, has
turned out to be a wonderful class teacher. She is intelligent, kind and helpful.
She is a good leader who keeps her students active in their studies and
participate in school activities. And she has won the parents over with her real
caring for their children. In other words, Miss Su, the P. E. teacher, is ''pretty
extraordinary. ''
The early negative reaction against Miss Su is an example of bias(偏见). A
''bias'' is wrong in thinking that has an influence on a person's opinions and
decisions. For example, in business, tall men are more likely to be bosses. In the
United States, anyone who is above 190 centimeters tall can expect to have a
higher salary and to get more promotions than his shorter co-workers. Similarly,
women have a difficult time climbing the career ladder because their
bosses(mostly men!) think that women lack leadership skills and the necessary
toughness to make difficult decisions. Neither of these opinions is based on facts
or the talents of the individual. They're just bias.
32. What seemed to be the parents' early reaction to Miss Su ____________
A. They were excited. B. They were amazed.
C. They were worried. D. They were interested.
33. Why is Miss Su considered to be ''pretty extraordinary'' _____________
A. She is an excellent P. E. teacher.
B. She was finally removed.
C. She really cared about her students.
D. The headmaster was proved to be wrong.
34. The examples are given in the last paragraph to show _____________ .
A. tall men are usually excellent B. people are often judged with bias
C. opinions should be based on facts D. women lack leadership skills
35. What's the author's attitude towards the bias ________________
A. Disagreeable. B. Acceptable C. Careless. D. Curious.
