A group of Dutch high school students with little sailing experience completed a five-week trip across the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday. The students, aged 14 to 17, were joined by 12 experienced crew members and three teachers. They had been taking part in an educational voyage of the Caribbean when the extreme weather forced them to greatly change the way they returned home.
Instead of flying back home from Cuba as they had planned, the crew members and students gathered supplies and warm clothes. Then, they set sail for the Dutch port city of Harlingen, 7,000 kilometers away. Their boat, the Wylde Swan, arrived at Harlingen late Sunday morning. Observers gathered at a sea wall to watch the arrival.
As they arrived, the students hung up a self-made sign on the boat that read “Bucket List”. It showed they had completed activities that included crossing the Atlantic Ocean, mid-ocean swimming and surviving the Bermuda Triangle, an area in the Atlantic where some people declare ships and planes have mysteriously disappeared. The students’ family members were waiting for them at the port.
Masterskip, the company that organized the boat trip, runs five educational voyages for about 150 students each year. Crossing the Atlantic is nothing new for the Wylde Swan, which has made the trip about 20 times. The company’s director, Christophe Meijer, said he was pleased the students had adapted to life on the boat and had kept up their education on the long trip. “They are actually far ahead now of their Dutch school students,” Meijer said, “They have made us very proud.”

If you live in certain parts of the world, you will see something magical happen each fall. It is the changing of the color of the leaves on many different trees. Each year deciduous (落叶的) trees go through a process in which their green leaves become bright yellow, gold, orange and red before turning brown and falling onto the ground.
Photosynthesis (光合作用) is the process for trees to make their food taking energy from the sun, water from the ground, and carbon dioxide from the air, they make sugar to “eat” so they can grow into strong, healthy trees. The leaves of a tree are where photosynthesis happens because the chlorophyll (叶绿素) in the leaves is what makes photosynthesis possible. Chlorophyll also has another job—it is what makes leaves green. When the seasons change in places where deciduous trees grow and the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, it is harder for the chlorophyll in the leaves to make the food needed to stay green. So instead of making more food, the leaves start using food they have stored away for this time of year.
As the leaves use the food that has been stored away, cells form at the bottom of each leaf. These cells act like a door between the leaf and the rest of the tree—a door that closes very slowly and doesn’t shut until all the leaf’s food is gone. While this is happening, the colors in the leaves of the trees are able to show through. In fact, the red, yellow, gold and orange colors are hiding in the leaves all summer long. The colors just can’t be seen in the summer because of all the chlorophyll in the leaves.
You might be wondering how the rest of the tree keeps growing when the weather turns cold and the leaves die and fall. Doesn’t the rest of the tree need the food made by the tree’s leaves
Not really. The tree trunk and branches get food from the roots of the tree. The roots supply water, vitamins and minerals they get from the ground. Trees need sunshine and warm weather to grow, but they also need time to rest like bears that sleep during the winter.
28.Why do leaves change colors
A.They save some energy to stay alive.
B.The chlorophyll stores some food away.
C.They have to get used to the cold weather.
D.They can’t get enough energy from the sun.
29.In which situation do leaves fall off deciduous trees
A.When there is no sunlight any longer .
B.When the food stored away in the leaves is use up.
C.When the chlorophyll in the leaves stops working.
D.When cells start to form at the bottom of each leaf .
30.How do trees survive in winter
A.By getting food from the ground.
B.By storing food in their branches.
C.By storing food in their roots.
D.By making the most use of the dead leaves.
31.What is the purpose of the text
A.To study how trees survive in winter.
B.To tell about the importance of photosynthesis.
C.To explain why leaves change colors.
D.To show the changes of trees in the whole year.
D
Grasses and short trees are growing and expanding around Mount Qomolangma and across the Hi ma lay an region as the area continued to experience the consequences of global warming, researchers have found. Using satellite data from 1993 to 2018, scientists measured “small but significant” increased between 4,150 and 6,000 meters above sea level. “There are now more areas that are covered in plants than there were in 1993,” said Anderson, a scientist who led the research.
While it is still too early to tell what impact this new growth could have on the region, “urgent research” on the potential effects is needed. “We don't know what the impact is — it might be the plants that cause the snow to melt more quickly,” Anderson added.
1.4 billion people depend on water collected in the region. Changes to water supplies could have great impacts on communities in different countries. “We know that plants and the water cycle are coupled,” Anderson explained. “Wherever you have plants growing, it changes the way the water cycle behaved in those areas. This is particularly important in the Himalayas because glaciers are reducing. We know from lots of scientific research that this is already having an impact on water supplies in this region and it will continue to do so as li-mate change continued.”
Climate change is already having an impact on Himalayan communities, A 2019 study found that Hi ma lay an glaciers have been losing almost half a meter of ice each year since the start of this century. This has already resulted in local communities being flooded — and could ultimately result in drought. Last year, a researcher from the International Centre found that at least a third of the ice in the region, which is home to Mount Qomolangma, could melt by the end of the century.
32.What changes happened to Mount Qomolangma from 1993 to 2018
A.Sea levels rose quickly. B.More plants grew there.
C.Grasses died out there. D.Temperatures declined.
33.Why does the author mention Anderson in paragraph 2
A.To explain the causes of climate change. B.To prove the effects of glaciers melting.
C.To present the reasons for plants growing. D.To show the necessity of the urgent research.
34.What affected the water supply in the Himalayas
A.The way of the water cycle. B.The varieties of plants.
C.The large population. D.The increasing glaciers.
35.Why would Himalayan communities end in drought
A.It seldom snows there. B.They have great floods these years.
C.The glaciers would disappear. D.More plants will grow there.
