Some time ago I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn't think there would be any difficulty in getting it repaired as there are a whole lot of antique (古董) shops near my home. So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception. I was quite wrong. The man wouldn't even look at my chair.
The second shop, though slightly more polite, was just the same, and the third and the fourth, so I decided that my approach must be wrong, and I should try another way.
I entered the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper, “Would you like to buy a chair ” He looked it over carefully and said, “Yes, not a bad chair. How much do you want for it, sir ” “Twenty pounds,” I said. “OK,” he said, “I'II give you twenty pounds.” “It's got a slightly broken leg,” I said. “Yes, I saw that. It's nothing.”
Everything was going according to plan and I was getting excited. “What will you do with it ” I asked. “Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done.” “I'll buy it.” I said, “What would you mean You've just sold it to me,” he said. “Yes. I know but I've changed my mind. I am sorry. I'll give you twenty-seven pounds for it.” “You must be crazy.” he said. Then, suddenly the penny dropped. “I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair.” “You're right,” I said. “And what would you have done if I had walked in and said, ‘Would you repair this chair for me ’” “I wouldn't have agreed to do it.” he said. “We don't do repairs, not enough money in it and too much trouble. David Starbuck, an archaeologist (考古学家), continues digging up history in New York despite a diagnosis (诊断) of cancer. Last August, a doctor told 70-year-old David Starbuck he had cancer, and that he had only six months to one year to live. David had a ready comeback. “I would prove that the doctor wrong and live for years,” he says. “It's the stubborn (固执的) ones who survive. We, archaeologists, are like that. For the past three decades. David has devoted his life to the dig of one of North America's most important eighteenth-century sites. Fort Edward, near Glens Falls, New York. Ricky lived in a house which had everything you could ever want. Though he didn’t help much around the house, Ricky was pleased when his parents bought home the latest model of robot. As soon as it arrived, it went off cooking, cleaning, and gathering up old clothes from Ricky’s bedroom floor, which Ricky didn’t like having to walk on. On that first day, when Ricky went to sleep, he left his bedroom in a truly bad state(状态). When he woke up the next morning, everything was perfectly clean and tidy.
In fact, it was actually “too” clean; now Ricky couldn’t find his favorite T-shirt and his favorite toy. However much he searched, the two items did not reappear, and the same was starting to happen with other things. Ricky cast a suspicious (怀疑的) eye on the robot. He began following it around the house. Finally he caught it red-handed, picking up one of Ricky’s toys to hide it.
He went off, running to his parents, to tell them that the robot was broken and badly programmed. Ricky asked them to have it changed. But his parents told him absolutely not. They needed the robot very much.
One day, the robot heard the boy’s complaints. The robot returned with one of the boy’s toys and some clothes for him. “Here, sir. I did not know it was bothering you,” said the robot, “The objects were left on the floor. I therefore figured that you did not like them. I am programmed to collect all that is not wanted, and at night I send it to places where other humans can use it.”
Ricky started feeling ashamed. He had spent all his life treating things as if they were useless. Yet it was true that many other people would be delighted to treat those things with all the care in the world. Since then, Ricky had put real care into how he treated his things. When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation. I suggested that they should stay at “bed and breakfast” houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.
“We didn’t stay at “bed and breakfast” houses,” they said, “because we found that most families were away on holiday.”
I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought “VACANCIES” meant “holidays”, because the Spanish word for “holidays” is “vacaciones”. So they did not go to house where the sign outside said “VACANCIES”, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to house where the sign said “NO VACANCIES”, because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels!
We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word “DIVERSION” means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word “DIVERSION” on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hole.
English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said “Thank you” in French. I meant that I would like some more. However, to my surprise, the coffeepot was taken away! Later I found out that “Thank you” in French means “No, thank you.”
46. The writer’s friends in Spain wanted to get advice about ________.
A. the chance of learning English B. the way of going to England
C. the traffic rules in England D. finding places to stay in England
47. The writer suggested that they stay at “bed and breakfast" houses because
A. it would be convenient for them to have dinner
B. it would be much cheaper than staying in hotels
C. they would be able to practise their English
D. there would be no problem about finding accommodation there
48. The writer’s friends stayed at hotels at last because ________.
A. they misunderstood the signs outside the door
B. there were no such “bed and breakfast” houses in England
C. they found there were no free rooms there
D. people there were away on holiday
49. If you see a road sign that says “DIVERSION” in England, you will ________.
A. fall into a hole
B. have to take a different road
C. find that the road is stopped by lots of people
D. have a lot of fun and enjoy yourself
50. When a Frenchman is offered more coffee and he says “Thank you”, he really means ________.
A. he doesn’t want any more coffee
B. he wants to show his amazement
C. he just wants to show his politeness
D. he wants to have some more coffee

If you're worried about the planet, please make sure your rubbish is buried under the ground.
People talk about "reduce, reuse, recycle. " It sounds like a good idea. There is a problem, though. Recycling costs too much money.
Even the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) says it only makes sense economically and environmentally to recycle about 35 percent of thrown materials, Among those materials are paper and aluminum cans(铝罐), Recycling I ton of paper or aluminum cans, the agency says, can save about 3 tons of CO2 emissions(排放)overproducing those materials again. Paper producers pay for the trees they process If it was cost-effective to recycle paper. producers would be beating down your door to bay it. But they aren't. That means it's more expensive to recycle old paper than to cut trees and then replant trees for processing.
Plastic can be recycled too. Because of the recent drop in crude oil(原油)prices. it is now cheaper to make a new plastic container(型料容器)than to recycle an old one. Even if that were not true, the EPA says that recycling a ton of plastic saves only about a ton of CO2. However, it doesn't take into consideration the water most people use to wash their plastic containers before having them recycled. The New York Times Journalist John
Tierney recently wrote. “If you wash plastic in water that was heated by electricity, them the effect of your recycling could be mere carbon in the air.
Glass is another recyclable material. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions by I ton, you have to recycle 3 tons of glass. If one includes the cost of collecting glass waste from neighborhoods, and the pollution produced by the collection trucks and the recycling process itself, glass recycling creates more greenhouse gas emissions and is more expensive than making new glass, which comes primarily from sand that exists everywhere.
If recycling were truly cost-effective, private companies would be lining up at your doorstep to bay your rubbish. Don't look now because they're not there.
61. What's the EPA'S attitude to recycling aluminum cans
A. It is helpful to the environment.
B. It is actually a waste of money.
C. It costs less than recycling paper.
D. It costs the same as producing new cans.
62. What increases the cost of recycling plastic
A. The crude oil. B. The water pollution.
C. The process to clean it. D. The electricity for lights.
63. What can be learned about making new glass
A. It results in lots of waste in neighborhoods.
B. The material for new glass can be easily got.
C. It is slightly more expensive than recycling glass.
D. Making 3 tons of new glass produces I ton of carbon emissions.
64. What does the author mean by saying the underlined sentence
A. Recycling will disappear soon.
B. Companies will line up at your doorstep
C. Recycling is a way to deal with your rubbish
D. Companies won't bother to collect thrown materials.
65. What's the best title for the text
A. Whose fault is it B. Where does waste go
C. Is everything recyclable D. Is it really worth the effort
