Two men, both seriously ill, lived in the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time on his back.
The men talked for hours. They spoke of their families, their jobs and their experiences. Every afternoon when the man by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The roommate was very happy to have one hour and he hoped to see the outside world.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm in arm among colorful flowers and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described in detail, the roommate would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.
One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn’t hear the band he could see it in his mind.
Weeks passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the man by the window had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.
After that, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.
Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the world outside. It faced a black wall. The man asked the nurse, “Why did he describe the invented world for me ”
The nurse said, “He was blind and could not even see the wall. Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.”

When Rachel Ratelle saw a news video of a burned koala trying to climb a tree to safety in fire-ravaged (火灾肆虐的) Australia, she decided to do something about it.
She looked up wildlife rescue and relief agencies in Australia to find out what they needed most. Besides donations, many organizations asked for hand-sewn and knitted pouches (袋子) and wraps for koalas and other animals that were burned or had lost their homes and parents in the fires.
This idea attracted Ratelle, but there was just one problem. “I’d never sewn in my life,” said Ratelle, 17, a senior at Rancho Buena Vista High School in Vista, US. “Giving money seemed like something too simple. But I wanted to directly help these animals by doing something myself, so I decided to learn how to sew.”
Over the next few months, Ratelle bought her own sewing machine and taught herself how to sew via videos online. Then she bought 18 yards of fabric and sewed 25 pouches of different sizes and shipped them off to Fir Australian Wildlife Needing Aid (FAWNA), one of several relief organizations that have rushed to rescue koalas, kangaroos and other species suffering from burns. A week later, she received a photo from FAWNA with a baby kangaroo in one of her larger pouches. “It made me feel like I contributed to the world and it showed how a simple act of kindness can go a long way,” said Ratelle who hopes to study biology for a future career as a nurse practitioner.
“I plan to use my new sewing skills to help animals and people devastated by natural disaster,” she said.
Several craft union websites around the world have called for Australian relief by making the animal pouches. Karen Newberry and her two daughters Madison, 12 and Rochelle, 8, from San Diego also offered their help in such a way. For Newberry, “It was a big push that made us crafters, sewers realize there’s something more we can do than just make things for ourselves,” she said.
46. What do the first two paragraphs mainly talk about
A. What inspired Ratelle to learn to sew.
B. What is needed to save koalas and other species.
C. The poor living conditions of wild animals in Australia.
D. Different ways to help koalas and other animals in Australia.
47. How did Ratelle feel when she received a photo from FAWNA
A. Surprised. B. Calm. C. Proud. D. Confused.
48. What does the underlined word “devastated” mean
A. ruined B. challenged C. reduced D. abandoned
49. Which of the following statements is TRUE about Ratelle
A. Ratelle looked up wildlife rescue to find the burned koala.
B. Ratelle wants to become a nurse in her future career.
C Ratelle thought giving money is the best to help the animals.
D. Ratelle learned to sew with the help of a former teacher.
50. What do Newberry’s words in the last paragraph suggest
A. People should stay united through difficult times.
B. Life is not easy for crafters and sewers in Australia.
C. It is challenging for crafters and sewers to do relief work.

Anyone who has visited Europe will have noticed its coffee culture. A good example of this is the type of cup you’re given after ordering a coffee.
Order a coffee in any café in America and you’re almost sure to receive that coffee in a paper cup. Americans like getting their coffee to go. Whether they are on their way to school, work, or simply taking a walk through the city, many of them often take their coffee with them.
Order a coffee in any European café and you’re sure to get that coffee in a ceramic (陶瓷的) cup with a package of sugar (and possibly a cup of water and a chocolate, depending on where you are). Many cafes only offer paper cups for special occasions when more people than chairs are expected.
Europeans generally don’t have coffee “to go” since they consider coffee drinking to be more of a social activity. If you go to a café in Europe, you will find that people drink their coffee with ease. Some have conversations while others read the daily newspaper.
Most American coffee shops provide a broad range of choices that satisfy different customers (顾客). In Europe, you aren’t given as many choices because locals are all about several basics.
Waiters in the U.S. are careful to keep a close eye on their tables to provide quality service. Travelers will be surprised to find European waiters a little less attentive. If you want something, you have to flag down your waiter. It doesn’t mean that European waiters are impolite; it’s quite the opposite. They are simply giving you space to enjoy your meal. Americans often pay attention to good service, while Europeans pay attention to the social aspect of the meal.

43. What does the author think of European waiters
A. They are so helpful and friendly.
B. They respect customers’ own space.
C. They are very patient and polite.
D. They serve customers with heart.
44. The underlined phrase “flag down” in the last paragraph probably means “________”
A. wave to the waiter to serve your table
B. shout to the waiter for your order
C. ask the waiter to make suggestions
D. give your praise for his service

Climate change can happen naturally or in response to human activities, including the burning of fossil fuels and clearing of forests. Burning fossil fuels creates gases that trap heat in the atmosphere. In fact, about 90 percent of the heat is absorbed by the ocean. So it’s really important to track the oceans’ warming, says J rn Callies. He’s an oceanographer at the California Institute of Technology. Tracking how that heat affects the ocean is difficult because of its depth and size, though. This makes it hard for scientists to understand long-term changes in temperature.
In September 2020, Callies and other scientists reported a new way to check the temperature of the ocean. As temperature affects how fast sound travels (sound travels faster in warmer water than colder water). Scientists originally proposed using sounds produced by machines to measure ocean warming, but it would affect marine animals. Whales, for example, use sound to communicate. Finally, Callies and his team showed they could use the natural sounds produced by earthquake instead.
For their study, the scientists looked at data for 2,000 pairs of earthquakes. Each earthquakes pair happened in the same place but at different times. What did the scientists find The sound waves traveled a few tenths of a second faster in more recent quakes than in older ones. This difference suggests a warming trend of 0.04 degrees Celsius (about 0.08 degrees Fahrenheit) per decade. A tiny amount of a degree may not sound like a lot. But it represents a huge of heat that the ocean absorbed. It takes a lot of heat to change the temperature of a body of water almost 3,200 kilometers (2,000 miles) wide and several kilometers deep.
However, Callies says it’s not the time to worry about that yet. They don’t know if the warming is only specific to the one region (East Indian Ocean) or if it’s happening elsewhere. “We just don’t have the data yet.” he says.
46. The heat caused by burning fossil fuels is mainly ________.
A. cleared by the forest B. disappearing naturally
C. taken in by ocean D. trapped by human activities
47. It is difficult to track the heat in the ocean because ________.
A. scientists can’t understand the changes in temperature
B. measuring the temperatures cost too much
C. the changes in temperature is too small
D. oceans are so deep and big to measure
48. Scientists choose sounds produced by earthquakes to track the ocean’s warming because ________.
A. natural sounds is less harmful to marine animals
B. sounds produced by machines are not correct
C. marine animals absorb sounds produced by machines
D. sounds produced by earthquakes travels faster than those by machines
49. Which conclusion can be drawn from the third paragraph
A. The change of sound sped affects temperature.
B. The change in the ocean’s heat can be ignored.
C. The experiment was not a success.
D. The change in the ocean’s heats is actually very big.
50. What does Callies mean in the last paragraph
A. Study should be continued and more data need to be collected.
B. There is no need to worry about the climate change.
C. He lost confidence in the study.
D. The scientists can’t analyze the data correctly.

Brandon Smith, in Houston, Texas, turned 12 on April 11. It is a tough time to have a birthday. But he still had a socially distanced birthday celebration that he will always remember.
Celebrations in the age of the coronavirus(冠状病毒) have forced people to get creative. Brandon’s father, Jody Smith, went on Twitter with a simple request. He posted a picture of Brandon on it. In the photo, Brandon is holding up a drawing. It is a blank map of the world. Mr. Smith asked people on Twitter to reply to his post and say where they are. That way, his map-loving son could mark the locations.
“I thought it would be fun to get 50-maybe 100-people to reply from around the world, and most would be in the US.” Smith said, “That’s really what my expectations were.”
To his surprise, however, thousands of responses to Smith’s request came in. Pictures were sent from the Caribbean, South America and Europe.
Brandon would add each spot to his map. “He is having a blast,” Mr. Smith said.
In the afternoon of April 11, Brandon was popular on Twitter. He was the most-talked-about topic.
Brandon did not really want a birthday party. He wanted to do an activity he likes. “Brandon is on the autism spectrum(自闭症).” Smith said. Children with autism have different abilities. They get very interested in things. They will be interested in it for just a few weeks, Sometimes, months, One thing that Brandon continues to love is maps.
Mr. Smith’s phone pinged with so many birthday messages. Each time one arrived, Brandon put a mark on his map. He put it wherever the message came from. He knew where most places were. He hardly had to look at a real map to check.
By noon, Brandon’s map was covered in marks. Mr. Smith was grateful for all the responses.

We talk a lot about air pollution. Here in Hong Kong we always complain about light pollution as well. Then, there is noise pollution. It's the same in many cities around the world. In Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, people have been complaining about/the noise made by drivers who continually sound their car horns(喇). That is until recently, when something was finally done about it.
The Chief District Officer of Kathmandu had received many complaints about horn pollution. He said that everyone felt the use of the car horn in recent years had become excessive. Researchers in Kathmandu found that for about 80 percent of the time, it really was not necessary for drivers to use their car horns. Sounding the horn to make a noise had become more of a habit. It was no longer being used as it was supposed to be used: to warn people of danger.
At the beginning of the Nepali New Year in 2017, the local government passed a law to ban the use of car horns unless used correctly.
Within six months, 11,000 fines(罚款) had been collected by the local traffic police. The e fine was about HK S360. A taxi driver in Kathmandu can make about HK S1, 000 per day, so he could lose about one-third of his money if he broke the law.
As usual, there were many complaints from drivers. They said that cows and dogs were free to walk on the roads. They always caused danger. Sounding a car horn was the only way to get them to move out of the way. And although there were quite a few traffic lights in the streets of Kathmandu, very few of them worked. This meant there was often a traffic mess.
The ban on using a car horn went ahead, and within a few weeks the streets of Nepal's capital were quieter-even though they were still just as busy. Because of the ban, drivers are a little more careful when they drive. Fewer accidents have been reported. The local government says the horn ban will now be copied in other areas of Nepal.

A. Both have been troubled by factory pollution.

C. Care drivers use car horns as a warning.

A. In 2016. B. In 2017.

A. No traffic lights in the streets can work.

50. What can we guess about Kathmandu's horn ban

Pictures were sent from the Caribbean, South America and Europe令他惊讶的是成千上万的对Smith先生请求的回应以及图片发送自于加勒比地区、南美洲和欧洲。这些线索足以说明B选项:He did not expect so many people to reply to it.“他没有期待有那么多的人回应此事。”切合文意。故选B。
【45题详解】
猜测词义题。审题定位于times,同意表达见于文首:It is a tough time to have a birthday.庆祝生日是一个艰难的时刻。然后在划线单词处说:He was glad to see people being kind. Mr. Smith said the responses made Brandon feel so special on his birthday. 故选A。
