“I want to work full-time in China, honey.” An overseas call awakened the wife from sound sleep. “Why ” asked the wife with surprise, in a drowsy (昏昏欲睡的) voice, from the other side of the ocean.
In the United States, he had a great future ahead. At the age of 36, he became the youngest professor in the history of the Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University, for his academic achievements. At 40, he became a tenured (终身的) chair professor at Princeton.
When everything seemed perfect and admirable to others, he firmly decided to say goodbye to Princeton University, to an affluent life in the United States, and return to China.
The news spread explosively. Many expressed confusion, many persuaded him, many made fun of him, and still many waited to have a good laugh at him.
He said patriotism is the plainest feeling of a person. Who doesn’t love his motherland, after all In his heart, the American dream is already something past; the Chinese dream is rising.
After returning to China, he devoted all his energy, worked like crazy, and determined to do something big. He formed a life science research team. Every day, he works 12 to 16 hours at his laboratory. He is Shi Yigong, nicknamed “Da Niu” (someone with extraordinary achievements) by Tsinghua students. His given name, Yigong, comes from an idiom that means “devoted to public interest whole-heartedly”. “So far as I’m concerned, awards are of no special meaning.” Shi says calmly.

Climate change is an ongoing and ever-present threat to the Earth and all living things upon it. Unchecked industrialism and the burning of fossil fuels have resulted in the creation of harmful greenhouse gases. Human greed has led to massive deforestation and clearcutting of forests to make way for farmland. Pollution blocks our rivers, lakes, and oceans. The point of no return may be fast approaching.
After decades of harmful actions, many governments and businesses are now struggling to find ways to lessen some of their destructive effects and reach net-zero, which means not adding to the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. One of the ways they proposed was the extensive tree-planting. The UK government, for example, has set out its plan to plant 30, 000 hectares of trees annually so as to absorb carbon dioxide.
However, according to Oxfam, a British charity devoted to helping people in poor countries, those plans never bore fruit. It issued clear and strong warnings against them-the area needed for a tree-planting project of this scale to successfully lower carbon emissions to net-zero is estimated at 1. 6 billion hectares, which is an area five times the size of India. That means the project would intrude (侵占) on the land presently needed to grow enough crops to feed the world’s expanding population.
Such a massive campaign of turning farmland into forest could give rise to a global interruption to agriculture, and cause food prices to rise by as much as 80% by 2050. In a world where millions of people are already going hungry, this could have disastrous results. By trying to save the planet, governments and businesses may cause many millions of people to die of starvation. This paradox (悖论) perfectly illustrates the phrase “damned if you do, and damned if you don’t. ”
8. The author mentions the UK government to show ________.

B there is still some doubt whether the UK can reach net-zero
C. countries and companies are trying to deal with climate change
D. net-zero makes sense only when all countries make joint efforts
9. What is Oxfam’s attitude towards the extensive tree-planting
A. Confident. B. Critical. C. Favorable. D. Unclear.
10. What is the paradox associated with the plans for tree-planting
A. A vast area of the forest would bum down instead.
B. Bigger forests could result in a population explosion.
C. India would lose 1.6 billion hectares of agricultural land.
D. Planting trees could lead to the starvation of millions of people.
11. Which of the following can be the best tile for the test
A. The Catch-22 of Net-zero
B. Irreplaceable Benefits of Forests
C. The Importance of Planting Trees
D. Greenhouse Gas Emission Largely Reduced

The remains of a huge building from ancient Greece have been discovered by underwater researchers working at a site of a historic battle that took place 2,500 years ago.
The monumental construction was found in the shallow waters off the coast of Salamis during excavation (挖掘) work that took place in June and July last year. The Greek Culture Ministry, which announced the discovery, said it dates back to the time of the Battle of Salamis — a naval battle between Greek and Persian states. Underwater researchers were carrying out a study of the area when they found the remains in the shallow waters. They believed it was a large public building that was used until the late Roman times, in the third century C.E.
The researchers said it would likely have been one of the main public buildings in the area. The team found many other features relating to the building and marble sculptures. This, the ministry said, appears to date back to the fourth century B.C.E.
During the 2018 study, the researchers used a new technique where a flexible barrier was constructed, allowing them to drain (排水) the area being excavated, get a better view of the site and take samples of the remains, helping them date the building.
The discovery of the building is important as it is helping the researchers reconstruct the geography of the area 2,500 years ago. At this time — 480 B.C.E.— the Battle of Salamis took place in the straits between Salamis Island and mainland Greece. Following successful invasions (入侵) by the Persian army, the Greek ships had withdrawn to Salamis. At this point Themistocles, a politician and general, convinced Greek friends to fight, a report of the battle by the U.K.’s Cardiff University notes. The Persians thought they had the advantage. They entered the straits of Salamis with a view to blocking the entrance. However, their large ships failed to operate well in the tight waterways and the Greeks were victorious. After this win, the Greeks defeated the Persians in several other key battles, ending the period of invasion.
12. What can be learned about the huge building
A. It was ruined during a naval battle.
B. It was still used after Roman times.
C. It was built after the Battle of Salamis.
D. It was discovered in the shallow waters.
13. What’s paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Why the researchers built a barrier.
B. How the researchers drained the area.
C. Why the researchers dated the building.
D. How the researchers conducted the study.
14. What’s the meaning of studying the remains
A. It tells people of a great politician’s achievements.
B. It shows why the Persian army carried out invasions.
C. It helps the researchers know what the area used to be like.
D. It confirms the report by the U.K.’s Cardiff University.
15. What do we know about the Battle of Salamis
A. It ended with the Greeks’ victory.
B. It put an end to the Persians’ invasion.
C. It took place in the mainland of Greece.
D. It forced the Persians to abandon their ships.

Lynn Colwell is a mixed-media artist in Redmond, Washington. In grade school, a teacher told her that she had no artistic talent and Lynn believed her. However, in 2015 when she retired, she hoped to have a new interest and began to take a year-long online painting class.
“It blew me away," she says. She started painting striking portraits of women's faces, combined with short messages of hope almost every day. In five years, she's completed about 1,000 paintings.
Lynn gives her paintings away. She started with friends, but that only went so far. Then she read about a movement called Art Abandonment, which encourages artists to leave their art in public places for anyone to pick up. That gave her the idea of putting her work into the hands of strangers through Facebook.
Nearly every day, Lynn posts a painting on her Facebook page. The first person who responds saying they're interested in it has 24 hours to make a donation of $ 25 or more to their favorite nonprofit or an individual in need. Then the painting is theirs. Lynn doesn't ask for proof (证明).She trusts that the people who want her paintings share her ideas.
Five years later, she's still amazed at the results. Her paintings have raised more than $ 57,000 for nonprofits such as animal rescue centers, homeless shelters as well as for people who have lost their jobs. Sometimes Lynn hears that a painting helped someone at the moment they needed it most. "That gives me chills/ she says.
To be a part of Lynn Colwell's art — for — a — cause effort, send her a friend request at facebook, com/ lynncolwell. Then keep an eye out for a painting that speaks to you. Healthcare staff and bank clerks have been on the front line of the health and economic crises striking the UK, but behind the scenes, another group of workers robots have been toiling away and overcoming both emergencies with no fear of COVID-19. But will COVID-19 speed up the rise of robots
Robotic Process Automation ( RPA)is software that robotizes repetitive back-office tasks. The National Health Service (NHS) has used it during the widespread disease to control demand and capacity planning in caring for all levels of patients day and night. Jason Kingdon, Blue Prism's new chief executive who is recovering from COVID-19, says," Before RPA, these were manual processes. You had to train a number of staff to put them in place. Now, you only need to train a single robot to manage the administration. M More than two fifths of bosses across 45 countries that responded to a survey by EY ( Ernst & Young) said they were planning on accelerating spending on automation technology to prepare for a post-COVID world.
COVID-19 has already left tens of millions unemployed, so firms won't be short of cheap labour on the other side of the crisis. But experts still think AI will be the more cautious choice for companies. One of them said," It's important to remember that even in China, which has much lower wages, 12. 5 million manufacturing jobs have been cut over the past four years as more robots have been adopted. "
However, AI is overhyped (过分提倡)in many ways and poor application could lead to a rise in anxiety towards automation. Again, we should think of history as a guide. A lot of workers riots (暴动)in the early 19th century happened during the continental blockade of the Napoleonic Wars when there was significant mess to trade in Britain. These things are not unrelated.
28. What does the underlined phrase "toiling away" in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Walking slowly. B. Working lazily. C. Working hard. D. Walking toughly.
29. What do Jason Kingdon's words in Paragraph 2 mean

30. What's the author's attitude to robots
A. Supportive. B. Worried. C. Indifferent. D. Opposed.
31. Which is the best title for the text
A. Robots Have Taken the Place of Humans
B. COVID-19 Has Terrible Effects on Our Life
C. It’s Time to Stop Robots from Taking the Place of Humans
D. COVID-19 Speeds up the Trend of Robots Replacing Humans

A tiny village in Alaska has experienced an increase in tourism in recent years as polar bears spend more time on land than on Arctic sea ice.
More than 2,000 people visited the village of Kaktovik last year to see polar bears in the wild. The far north community is located in an area where rapid global warming has sped up the movement of sea ice, the primary habitat of polar bears. As ice has gradually moved to deep water beyond continental shelf, more bears are forced to remain on land to look for food.
The village had fewer than 50 visitors annually before 2011, said Jennifer Reed, a worker of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. "Today we're talking about thousands of visitors, many from around the world each year," Reed said.
Polar bears have always been a common sight on sea ice near Kaktovik, but residents started noticing a change in the mid-1990s. Because of the difficult situation, more bears started to stay on land, and researchers began taking note of more female bears making dens(兽穴)in the snow on land instead of on the ice to raise their babies.
“U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists began hearing reports of the increasing numbers of polar bears in the area in the early 2000s," Reed said. As more attention was given to the plight of polar bears, more tourists stated heading to Kaktovik.
Most tourists visit in the fall, when bears are forced toward land because sea ice is the farthest away from the shore. Bruce Inglangasak, a local hunter who offers wildlife-viewing tours, said he has been offering polar bear tours since 2003 or 2004. Most of his clients are from Europe and the USA. "Many tourists stay several days in the village, which has two small hotels, Bruce said.
32. Why do more polar bears stay on land
A. To search for food. B. To keep away from pollution.
C. To observe climate change. D. To protect continental shelf.
33. Where do polar bears prefer to live
A. On land. B. In snow. C. On sea ice. D. Under water.
34. Which can replace the underlined word "plight" in Paragraph 5
A. Difference. B. Difficulty. C. Extinction. D. Experiment.
35. What can we know about polar bears from the text
A. They like staying with people. B. They lack people's attention.
