As the late afternoon sun beat down on the farm last May, Brandon Leseberg finished feeding his cows and decided to call it a day. As they often did, his two sons, Louie, 6, and Everett, 3 9 followed him.
As they headed for the house the two boys ran ahead of their father, who stopped to close the gate. Louie paused at a water tap atop an old well for some drink. Unknown to the Lesebergs 9 the board covering the well had worn and broken. When Louie stepped on it, it collapsed.
Brandon had just unlocked the gate when he turned around and saw only his youngest son.
" Where's Louie " he shouted.
"He fell in the hole! " Everett said.
Brandon quickly realized what had happened. Noooo! He thought. Louie can barely swim!
He ran to the well and heard Louie hitting the water below. Instinctively, he jumped in. As he fell down the well, Brandon heard Louie screaming. Somehow Brandon managed to grab onto a pipe that ran down the side of the well, which slowed him and kept him from crashing into his son.
Brandon hit the ice-cold water at the bottom of the well. He popped his head out of the water and grabbed Louie, who was panicked, trying to raise his son onto his chest, his body still partly submerged.
"All right, Dad, you can pull us out now, " Louie said.
If only it were that easy. There was only one way out. Looking up to see Everett peering down at them from the top of the well, Brandon shouted, " Everett, you're going to have to be a big boy and save us. Run to the road and stand by the mailbox to get someone to stop. Tell them we need help. And Everett, stay off the road! OK, Everett "
" OK, Daddy. "
Everett did as he was told.

An Amazing Dollar
It was spring in 2018. The whole school was bathed in beautiful sunshine. A boy, Belscher, was anxiously walking up and down the campus, his right hand in his pocket.
Belscher was an average student, but not an average person. From a young age, he had started working part-time to help support his family. He had struggled to grow up, and he was also positive and generous. He was always willing to help and was popular among his classmates. Recently, however, he had changed. He now worked longer hours, trying to earn more money. It seemed every dollar, even every cent, meant a lot to him.
That morning Belscher noticed a dollar on the floor. After putting the dollar in his pocket, Belscher began to feel uneasy. As the day progressed, he began to feel worse and he couldn't even concentrate during class. The one dollar bill felt like a fire burning in his pocket. He kept thinking about Mrs Mattison, office dean o the school, who always taped (粘贴)lost items on the whiteboard and asked the students to do the same.
He was so lost in thought that he didn’t even hear his deskmate call his name, “Are you OK, Belscher ” His deskmate, Megan Rose asked. "Sure, " Belscher paused, unable to complete the sentence. His heart began to race and his mind went blank. "Why, why are you asking " Your face is so red!” Rose whispered.
Belscher felt as if the whole world was watching him and could see inside his pocket. Belscher was so overwhelmed with embarrassment and guilt that he rushed out o the classroom. Even the bright spring sunshine wasn't strong enough to wash away his shame.

Snow began to fall across the Apennines Mountain in January and lasted for days. From his home in the suburbs, Matrone watched the weather with concern. He and his wife, Cicioni, had planned an overnight getaway to the hotel halfway up the mountain. But now he wondered whether they should go. After phoning the hotel, they decided to make the trip. When they finally arrived six hours later, they were both cold and exhausted. They checked into their room and went to bed early.
As they awoke the next day, they discovered that their difficulty had worsened overnight. The cars in the parking lot were invisible. The phone and power lines were down. Many people were digging their cars.
With a dozen vehicles freed by noon, the guests set off down the driveway. But when they reached the main road, the path was blocked by a six-foot-high wall of snow. Matrone climbed out of his car and there was no road in sight. “We're trapped! he told his wife. So they had no choice but to make their way back to the hotel.
As it was getting dark, they managed to be back. That was when the snow on the mountain began to slide. They heard the avalanche (雪崩)before they saw it. The avalanche gathered speed and size, grabbing anything in its way down the mountain and tearing the hotel from its foundation. When the avalanche came to a stop, those caught inside the hotel were left buried in the icy rocks and ruins.
