Unit 6 Birdwatching
单元话题阅读理解练习
(2022·江苏·扬州市广陵区教师发展中心八年级期末)You may often hear some myths(传言)about animals. For example, one dog year equals about seven human years, chameleons(变色龙)change color to match their environment…Today, let’s talk about birds. It is said that if you touch a baby bird, the parents will completely abandon(抛弃)it. Do you really believe it
In fact, most birds have a very poor sense of smell, so in most cases they are unable to even notice the smell of humans on baby birds. Not only that, but most types of birds aren’t so quick to abandon their young when they sense danger. Some types will even do their best to protect their young when they are in danger.
Indeed, in very few known cases, parent birds sometimes abandoned their nests from something touching their young, just because they noticed it by sight, not smell. When this happens, the parent birds usually won’t care, other than to be a little more careful than normal. Sometimes, they may temporarily(暂时地)abandon the nest in order to better watch whatever disturbed their nest.
What’s more, in most cases, even if the nest is destroyed by wind or something to that effect, you could create a new one and put all the baby birds back in it, and when the parents came back, they wouldn’t care their baby birds were in a different nest, so long as you put the new nest near where the old one was so they can find it.

A. B. C. D.
4.What is the best title of this passage

(2022·江苏·苏州高新区第二中学八年级期末)How did the sea horse get its name It’s not hard to guess. The top half of the fish looks like a small horse.
Sea horses live in warm ocean waters all over the world. There are 32 different kinds of sea horses. Their sizes are quite different from one inch long to about one foot long. Because their fins are small, sea horses swim very slowly. They keep safe from other fish by hiding in plants and grasses. They can also change colours to keep themselves. Sea horses feed on live food, such as tiny shrimps. A sea horse has no teeth, so it eats the shrimp whole.
A sea horse keeps the same mate for its whole life, unlike most kinds of fish. And it’s the male sea horse, not the female, which gives birth to baby sea horses. How does this happen Baby sea horses start out as eggs, which come from the female’s body. But the female places the eggs in the male sea horse’s pouch (育儿袋). The male carries the eggs for about three weeks until they hatch (孵化).
The number of sea horses is becoming smaller. Why is this happening Some places where sea horses once lived have been filled in to make new land. Also, many sea horses are caught and kept in aquariums (水箱) where they can’t live long. The best place for a sea horse is the ocean. There it can find a mate and bring new sea horses into the world.
5.Sea horses do the following things except ________ to keep themselves safe from other fish.
A.changing colours B.changing sizes C.hiding in plants D.hiding in grasses
6.Why is the number of sea horses becoming smaller
A.Because they grow at a very low speed. B.Because their homes are changed into new land.
C.Because they are killed by people for food. D.Because their food is becoming less and less.
7.What is the best title of the passage
A.Father Sea Horses B.How Sea Horses Grow
C.Kinds of Sea Horses D.All About Sea Horses
(2022·江苏泰州·八年级期末)
There is nothing as enjoyable as having a day out in the fresh air and sunshine, but you may get sunburned unless you pay attention to protection from the sun, like using sunscreen(防晒霜).
Interestingly, getting sunburned is also a problem for some animals, especially for the animals without much hair. More interestingly, even if they do not have any sunscreen, they have their special methods to deal with the problem.
Rhinoceros(犀牛), for example, like to roll in the mud(在泥里打滚). This looks dirty. In fact, the coating of mud keeps them cool in hot weather and protects their skin. Similarly, elephants throw sand on their backs and heads as a kind of natural “sunscreen”.
________ Sea animals also face this problem, like whales. It’s a good thing that blue whales can repair the damaged cells(受损的细胞) in the skin themselves, so they don’t often get skin illness.
Like wild animals, pets with less fur may also get sunburned easily. To prevent them getting sunburned while playing outdoors, pet keepers can choose sunscreen or pet clothing for their pets.

(2021·江苏南京·八年级期末)Honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree Animals can’t talk but can they lie in other ways
Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees(黑猩猩), behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends(假装) to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. They are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, dig the food, and hide it again somewhere else.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner’s hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share their food.
As children, many of us learn the saying “You can’t fool Mother Nature.” But maybe you can’t trust her, either.
13.A plover protects its young from a predator by ________.
A.getting closer to its young B.driving away the adult predator
C.leaving its young in another nest D.pretending to be injured
14.By saying “Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky.”, the writer means ________.
A.chimps are ready to attack others B.chimps are sometimes dishonest
C.chimps are jealous of the winners D.chimps can be selfish too
15.What does the story mainly want to tell us
A.Animals can also tell lies. B.Honesty helps animals survive.
C.Mother Nature can fool animals. D.Animals learn to lie from childhood.
16.Where can you probably find the passage
A.A tourist guide. B.A physics book.
C.A nature magazine. D.An advertisement.
(2022·江苏宿迁·八年级期末)There are twice as many giant pandas as before.
The giant panda is one of the world’s most endangered animals. In fact, it is known all over the world as the symbol of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), an international organization that protects endangered animals.
Here is some good news: the number of giant pandas—China’s most famous animal—is increasing. The latest facts show that there are now about 1,600 giant pandas living in the wild. This is twice as many as before. Much of this success is because of the environmental organizations like the WWF.
At the Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base in Chengdu, scientists work hard to find ways to look after these special animals. 85% of the world’s giant pandas live in the south-western hills and mountains of China. Bamboo forests also grow here. The research center has been built on the edge of these forests. Its main object is to increase the number of giant pandas. As the young giant pandas grow up, they learn the necessary skills to live a normal life.
A giant panda eats as much as 20 kilos of food per day and spends between 12 and 16 hours eating. So for this program to be successful, more forests that are suitable as habitats for giant pandas must be found. In April of 2000, about 23,000 square kilometers of forest was chosen in Sichuan, Shanxi and Gansu Provinces. And five new areas have been named as nature reserves in the Qinling Mountains. There are now more than 40 areas that protect giant pandas: 37 more than 15 years ago. Still, everyone must continue to work hard to protect one of China’s most important national treasures—the giant panda.

(2022·江苏·泰兴市洋思中学八年级阶段练习)Do you like walking in nature How do you feel when you hear birdsong Happy or nervous Recently, a study showed that hearing different sounds of bird singing may help increase(增加) our happiness.
Researchers at California Polytechnic State University(简称 Cal Poly) did a study. They studied the effects(作用) of birdsong on people walking through a park in the U.S. state of Colorado. Danielle Ferraro led the Cal Poly study.
Feraro said there could be an evolutionary(进化的) reason why we like birdsong so much. “The idea is that when we hear birdsong, it could mean that we are in a safe environment,” she said. There could be many other reasons, too. Ferraro said that in some areas birdsong could also mean the arrival of spring and nice weather. “Bird diversity(多样性) could also mean a healthy environment,” she added.
Ferraro and her team played recorded songs from a group of different kinds of birds. They did this in a park in Boulder, Colorado. Over several weeks, the researchers played recorded birdsong at certain times of the day and other times they did not. Then they talked with hikers(徒步旅行者) after they passed by. People who heard the recorded birdsongs reported a greater sense of happiness than those who heard simply the natural birds. The researchers said that both the bird sounds and bird diversity could increase feelings of happiness.

Giant pandas are black-and-white Chinese bears. They are lovely-looking animals with a big head, a heavy body, round ears, and a short tail.
This bear is quite different from other bears. It has unusual cat-like eyes with very good eyesight. It is white with black areas around the eyes, ears, shoulders, chest, legs, and feet. This black-and-white coloring may help the panda hide in the snowy, rocky environment.

There are delicious food to eat, and they also can watch colorful peacocks (孔雀) here, but recently I find some problems about the peacocks.

In the spring the snail wakes up. Its body, about three inches long, comes out from the shell. When hungry, the snail looks for food. Its eyes, at the end of the top feelers, are very weak. But its sense of smell is very strong. It helps the snail to find food and the new greens.
A snail’s mouth is no bigger than the point of a pin. Yet it has 256, 000 teeth! The teeth are very small, and you can’t see them. If you put a snail in a hard paper box, it will eat its way out! And if a snail wears out its teeth, it will grow new ones.
