“To me, love is the most important thing. What could be more healing than love ”
These words, like lines from a poem, are from Robin, who founded the Bumi Sehat Bali Clinic in central Ubud. Now the clinic provides treatment or educational support for over 100, 000 people annually.
Giving birth to her first child at nineteen, Robin moved to Hawaii after college, working for several years on a farm, where she taught farming practices and poetry. But in 1991, she received heartbreaking news. Her idyllic life on the farm was turned upside down when her sister, expecting a child in Alabama, died of pregnancy complications (孕娠并发症) .
“When my dear sister passed away, I realized mothers were dying everywhere. In countries with increased poverty, some people can’t afford to go to the hospital. What motivated me initially was my love for my sister, but this soon grew into a concern for mothers and children all over the world.” Robin’s feelings for her sister were transformed into a desire to help women everywhere in need.
To ensure that children are born healthy, nutritionally balanced meals are provided for expecting mothers free of charge. Those who lack housing are free to stay as long as it is necessary. The clinic also sees patients of all ages who have symptoms unrelated to childbirth, while providing facilities for language learning and IT education, and annually training over 6, 000 nursing and midwifery (助产) students, backed by a scholarship program.
Just as Robin said, love is to be found inside the Bumi Schat Bali Clinic. Perhaps feelings of showing kindness toward others and wanting to make the world a better place are the key to a brighter tomorrow.

Earlier this month, two high school students from Longmont, Colorado, US, led a gardening lesson for fifth graders from Burlington Elementary School.
Burlington, in Longmont, is one of 10 local primary and high schools benefiting from an $11, 700 grant (拨款) from the Farm to School program supported by United States Department of Agriculture. The grant aims to build on ongoing nutrition education, add farm-to-school training and create gardening mentorships (导师制) . For the mentorship program, about 125 high school students are participating to help school garden education.
Kate likes the idea of volunteering with younger students She noted that many school gardens are currently empty. “It gives the kids responsibility to care for plants.” she told Daily Camera. “It’s always so much fun to play with dirt. It’s very beneficial to energetic kids.”
In addition to small gardens at the schools, the grant helps to build greenhouses to enable students to grow food. Last summer, the teacher Jennifer arranged a “salad day” harvest for students at the Burlington Elementary School. She guided kids to water the plants in a greenhouse garden twice a day. This semester, kids have planted tomato and herb seeds with the help of the high school students. Later this spring they will work with the student union on a plant sale.
Several Burlington fifth graders are also making a short film about the greenhouse and its origins. They recorded the whole process of establishing the greenhouse. A new phone app uses vibrations (振动) from smart phones to alert people about earthquakes.
The phone app recognizes sudden shaking of the earth’s surface through sensors (传感器) in smart phones. The new app is called MyShake. It is the work of four researchers at the University of California, Berkeley. They said they created a worldwide warning system that would inform people and give them time to prepare. The MyShake app is available only for Android phones.
Smart phones are equipped with accelerometers (加速计) . These instruments measure movement, like that of a car or airplane. They can also measure the shaking of a machine, building or other structure. Accelerometers are used in activity trackers and apps that count steps or other exercise. They are also used in global positioning system (GPS) apps.
MyShake uses phone accelerometers to measure seismic (地震引起的) activity. It has been programmed to know the difference between normal activity and earthquake movement. The software developers say their app is right 93 percent of the time. A smart phone sends seismic information to the app developers. If the developers receive information from one area, it recognizes that an earthquake may be taking place or will take place soon. Using information sent from the app, the network then estimates the location and strength of the quake in real time. MyShake can record magnitude (规模) 5. 0 earthquakes at distances of 10 kilometers or less. MyShake uses very little power, according to its developers. Only when seismic activity is sensed by the app does it become active and sends data to the network.
The app works best when your phone is resting on a flat surface, like a table. The app also shows ways to stay safer during an earthquake. The developers say it will become more effective as more people use it.
12. What can we know about MyShake
A. It can be applied to all kinds of phones.
B. It serves as a worldwide warning system.
C. It’s the name of a new smart phone.
D. It can prevent and stop the movement of the earth.
13. How can the phone app feel the earth’s shaking
A Through vibrations from smart phones.
B. Through information in smart phones.
C. Through sensors in smart phones.
D. Through accelerometers in smart phones.
14. Why are accelerometers used in MyShake
A. To locate where the user is. B. To count steps or other exercise.
C. To measure seismic activity. D. To measure the shaking of building.
15. What’s the best title for the text
A. A New Phone App Feels Earthquakes
B. A New Phone App Prevents Earthquakes
C. A New Phone App Keeps You Safe in the Earthquake
D. A New Phone App Makes Smart Phones More Effective

What is bodysurfing
Bodysurfing is related to riding on a wave with no help from aid tools such as a surfboard. That’s why it is called the “purest” form of surfing. In fact, it is one of the very few extreme sports—free climbing and cliff diving are others—that can be practiced using nothing but the human body.
How do you do it
To catch a wave, swim to where the waves break and, as one approaches, start swimming towards the beach. You must try to travel at the same speed as the wave and, if you do it correctly, you will feel the wave lifting you and pushing you forwards. Then try and cut along the surface of the wave.
What do you need
It is more enjoyable and safer if you use flippers (large flat rubber shoes). This is because they enable you to swim faster and surf along them more easily. A wetsuit is also advisable. Another aid is a handboard, a mini-surf board about the size of an iron, held in one hand to speed up along the wave. If you are lucky enough to be surfing in warm water, make sure you have your boardshorts (冲浪短裤) at the ready.
Unofficial world championships
Bodysurfing is not a professional sport, but in Hawaii there is such a festival called the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic each year. Local bodysurfers compete against athletes from places such as Australia, Brazil, Japan and France. Famous bodysurfer Mike Stewart has won the event no fewer than 12 times, and Kelly Slater, the greatest surfer in history, has also competed.

The well-known Spanish painter Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he/ she grows up.”
This is both encouraging and discouraging. The fact that we were all born to be artists is surely exciting. But the reality has proven that remaining to be an artist is a task that many of us have failed.
Fortunately, some people have seen the problem and want to solve it. Western educators have suggested that we introduce the concept of “STEAM” instead of “STEM”—traditional “core majors including science, technology, engineering and math—since the “A”, which stands for “art”, is just important as well.
And on April 11, China’s Ministry of Education issued a guideline. Colleges and universities are required to provide more art-related courses and students need to earn a certain number of art credits (学分) in order to graduate.
These efforts came after many scientific studies had found that art education helps students develop self-confidence and teamwork skills, as well as habits of mind such as problem solving and critical thinking.
It’s true that none of these skills target specific jobs. But as former US ballet dancer Damian Woetzel told The Atlantic, the purpose of art is “to give kids the tools to become adults who are creative, adaptable and expressive— capable of having their eyes and ears and senses alive And we can now see how we lost track of our born “artist self” on our way to growing up: we failed to keep our capabilities to see, hear and feel, and became blind, deaf and insensitive adults.
Hopefully, art education can help turn things around.
28. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To introduce a famous painter. B. To summarize the whole passage.
C. To inspire us to be artists. D. To lead in the topic.
29. According to western educators, why should “STEAM” be introduced
A. Art is as equally important as “core majors”. B. Western education is more useful.
C. Traditional “core majors” are out of date. D. All of us should learn art in college.
30. What can we know from the guideline issued by China’s Ministry of Education
A. More students will major in art.
B. More art courses will appear in all schools.
C. College students will have to gain enough art credits to graduate.
D. Art will become more important than science, technology and engineering.
31. The passage mainly tells us ________.
A. every child is an artist. B. bringing art to life is essential.
C. life is full of art. D. artists are talented

A robot is navigating in the strawberry field, finding the ripe ones, picking without bruising (擦伤) and putting them in the basket. It may sound impossible but now it does, thanks to Rubin— the strawberry-picking robot, which is a piece of Belgium innovation (创新). This kind of robot is not only an answer to the labour shortage in agriculture, but also allow growers to increase the quality of its produce— which finally benefits the consumers.
Nowadays the labour shortage in agriculture is gradually obvious. But for Octinion the focus is clearly on adding quality. “Thanks to robotics, we have so many possibilities, much more than a human could ever do. Harvest prediction, picking according to market needs, simply picking when berries are ripe instead of when workers are available — these are just a few examples of what is possible for growers,” says Coen, CEO of the Octinion Technology Group. The consumers will also notice the difference, because strawberries will be fresher and show less bruising.
Introducing robots in an industry where almost everything gets done by hand is more of a revolution than an evolution. It calls for close cooperation with all stakeholders (利益相关者). Coen says: “Not only have we been working together with growers and test centers across the world for the past couple of years, but breeders have also been eager to be part of the technological development.’’
In 2014, a team of Belgian engineers started the development of the robot. Meanwhile, Octinion was not the only company to present a concept. Product Manager Laura says it’s not a surprise that the company from Leuven is the first to actually present a commercial product: “by developing the robot from the beginning, we are able to make it practical in greenhouse or tunnels.” Octinion plans to launch harvesting robots for other crops in the coming years.
32. What can we know about the robot
A. It can help solve the problem of labour shortage.
B. It makes little difference to the quality of the fruits.
C. It has been put into the market globally.
D. It is only the researching result of Belgian engineers.
33. What’s the main idea of paragraph 2
A. The creation of robotic picking. B. The advantages of robotic picking.
C. How the robotic picking functions. D. Different attitudes to robotic picking.
34. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. The robot was introduced to the market in 2014.
B. Octinion was the only company to come up with a concept.
C. The robot can be used in any field.
D. Various harvesting robots are on the way.
35. What’s the best title
A. How robots pick strawberries. B. Fruits will be picked by robots.
C. A kind of new robot was invented. D. Strawberry-picking robots came out.

There are some Christmas traditions between the United Kingdom and the United States.
Letters to Santa Claus
In the United States, kids usually write letters to Santa and put them in the mailbox. However, in England we throw them directly into the fire. We don't plan to make kids cry because burning the letters can send them to the North Pole where Santa can read your Christmas wishes in the smoke. It may seem strange but it does save on postage.
Hanging stocking
Traditionally, American kids hang stockings around the fireplace for Santa to fill with presents. But in the UK. we hang stockings around the bed; being surrounded by presents is a fantastic way to wake up on Christmas morning.
Christmas pudding
Americans prefer to have pumpkin and pecan pies for the Christmas dessert; while we British are fond of Christmas pudding. which is a cake flavored with dried fruits and spices.
Dealing with Christmas tree
We British chose to take down the Christmas trees and the decorations within 12 days of Christmas, because we hold the belief that keeping then beyond that time can bring bad luck. This is probably a tradition that Americans should consider adopting. I have seen people keep their old, brown, dry and withered Christmas trees until almost July 4.

I am Tony, a volunteer stem cell courier. Since March 2019, I have done 99 trips——of those, 56 have been abroad. I have 42 hours to carry stem cells in my little box because I've got two ice packs and that's how long they last. In all, from the time the stem cells are harvested from a donor to the time they can be implanted (移植) in the patient, we've got 72 hours at most. So I am always conscious of time.
Last year, I had a trip where I was caught by a hurricane in America. I picked up the stem cells in Providence, Rhode Island, and was meant to fly to Washington then back to London. But when I arrived at the check -in desk at Providence, the lady on the desk said: "Well, I'm really sorry, but I've got some bad news for you - there are no flights to Washington." So I took my box and put it on the desk and I said: "In this box are some stem cells that are urgently needed for a patient- please, please, you've got to get me back to the United Kingdom." She just dropped everything. She arranged for a fight on a small plane to be held for me, rerouted (改道) me through Newark and got me back to the UK even earlier than originally scheduled.
For this courier job, I' m consciously aware that in that box I've got something that is potentially going to save someone’s life.

The famous British writer Charles Dickens, who penned the letter that led the signatures of resistance to street music in 1864, would be pleased to hear that, to be a busker (街头艺人) in London today, one must pass a strict "interview" first. Each busker must go through a shortlist process and then perform live in one of underground stations in front of three judges. Each musician must perform two songs (one prepared by themselves and the other selected by judges from a submitted set list). The judging process reviews the musician's songs, musicality, technique skill and performance. If successful, the musician will receive a 12 - month license to perform in the street. Last year, more than 600 musicians attended the "interview" and only 70 got license.
The method of tipping buskers is changing. London is the first city in the world to introduce the electronic payment system (EPS). London mayor (市长) Sadiq Khan described London as “a powerhouse of music". “For London to keep its status as a global capital of music, it's vitally important that we support the stars of tomorrow," Khan said. "Busking helps them show their talent and gives them the chance to perform in front of huge numbers of people. The new method means more people will now be able to show their support for the capital city s many street performers because it's more convenient for them to do so."
Charlotte Campbell is one such busker who' s been helping to trial the project. After only two weeks, she said it had “already had a significant effect on the contributions I've received." She's noticed when one person taps the reader to donate, others who witness the act often follow suit, suggesting people are more than willing to adopt the new way of rewarding buskers.

After Bernini broke his neck and lost all movements below his shoulders when he was 18, his brain still told his hands how to move - - but the message couldn't get through the injured part that connects his brain to other parts of his body. Now, thanks to recent advances in electrical stimulation (刺激) technology. Bernini can once again grasp, pour, and even play Guitar Hero. To do so, he uses a micro-electrode array (MEA) that reads his brain's signals and sends them through wires to something like a sleeve on his arm that electronically stimulates his muscles.
In the past years, researchers have used several approaches to guide patients like Bernini to move their hands. In some systems, researchers implanted (植入)sensors in shoulder muscles that patients could still control, allowing them to move one hand by contracting muscles in the opposite shoulder. Other systems use brain implants similar to those in the new study, but to control robotic arms, rather than the patient’s own muscles. But never before has a patient been able to precisely move his hand using the same neural (神经的)signals that controlled his hand before his injury.
After implanting the MEA in Bernini 's brain, researchers connected it to a computer. Bernini trained the system to connect patterns of neural signals to specific movements by repeatedly mirroring the movements of an imaginary hand on a computer screen. Soon, Bernini could hold large objects like glasses and lift small objects like straws. He could also move each finger on his own just by thinking about it, which previous systems had never achieved. And it was absolutely an amazing moment.
12. How is Bernini now
A. He does well in playing the guitar.
B. He has recovered from his neck injury.
C. His thoughts can control his hand movements.
D. His shoulder muscles guide his hand movement.
13. What did researchers want to do through brain implants in the past
A. Control the patients' hands.
B. Guide robots to help patients.
C. Help patients' own muscles contract.
D. Repair patients' injured neural signals.
14. What's the breakthrough in Bernini 's case compared with previous studies
A. He can hold and lift objects.
B. He can move each finger independently.
C. He can recognize his specific movements.
D. He can use neural signals for hand moving.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Moving Hands by Contracting Muscles.
B. Using New Systems for Muscle Injuries.
C. Sending Neural Signals by Wires.
D. Linking thoughts to Movements.
