Do you make money by doing small jobs If you do you may have heard of the idea of spending only some of it, saving some of it and donating some to people who need it more.
The head of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, and his wife announced they were giving away 99% of their money from Facebook during their lives to help others! That alone is amazing considering most people donate about 3% to 5% of the money they have. It is even more amazing when you realize they’re donating about $45 billion. That’s $45, 000, 000, 000!!!! Don’t worry. They’ll still have about $455 million to live on!
They made this decision partly because they had a baby girl, Max, and thought about what kind of world they’d like her to grow up in. It must be an amazing feeling to have that kind of money spent on people in need. Mark Zuckerberg is one of the richest persons in the world, so most of us will never know what that would be like.
But we don’t have to be super wealthy to make meaningful change. Sometimes change can come from change!
Ten-year-old Joey Roth from America started saving up change he found anywhere--around his house, on the street, on his way to school…And then he started putting it in a jar. He even asked the tooth fairy to donate some change in his letter to her after he lost a tooth! (The tooth fairy is an imaginary person.)
His collection, Jar for Change, has grown into a community-wide effort and he has raised over $10, 000 all from people dropping coins into jars! The money he raises goes to help connect parents with their very sick babies.
See what these people have done You, too, can help others—no matter how old you are, where you live and how much you earn!
4. How much would most people donate if they had 20, 000 yuan
A. 60-100 yuan. B. 300-500 yuan.
C. 600-1000 yuan. D. 30-50 yuan.

A. Making money. B. Giving away $45 billion to help others.
C. Being the richest person in the world. D. Spending money unwisely.
7. What does the author intend to tell us by mentioning Joey Roth’s story
A. Everyone can make a difference. B. Giving makes people happy.
C. Pocket money can be helpful. D. Giving is better than receiving.
C
Blood donations save lives. But blood can only be stored under refrigeration (冷藏) for up to six weeks. After that, it’s no longer usable for transfusions(输血).
“Because of that limitation people have to continually donate blood to meet the needs. But also, in places where refrigeration may not be available, that can also be a challenge. It’s difficult to have blood available when needed.” University of Louisville bioengineer Jonathan Kopechek says. He also says disruptions to regular blood donations due to COVID-19 have put stress on the blood supply, and COVID-19 strengthens the need for more reliable long-term storage methods.
But it’s pretty rare because of all the challenges and complexities with that process. Instead Kopechek’s team has developed a method of preserving blood so it can be stored in a dehydrated(脱水的) state at room temperature. To do so, they turned to an unusual preservative(防腐剂): a sugar called trehalose, which is a common ingredient(成分) in donuts(甜甜圈)to help make them look fresh even when they might be months old, and people wouldn’t know the difference.
At that point, the blood could be dried and made into a powder(粉末). And then we can rehydrate(再水化) the blood and have it return back to normal. The team is still trying to improve yields but thinks the dried blood could be stored at room temperature for years. Kopechek says the technique could be ready for clinical trials in three to five years. If successful, it could be used to create stores of dried blood in case of future pandemics or natural disasters, and for first aid work, military operations or even missions to Mars. Maybe first aid kits on the Red Planet will include dried red blood cells.
8. Why we need a more reliable method to preserve blood
A. Refrigeration can’t be afforded.

B. Shortage of refrigeration .
C. A new technique of storing blood.
D. A new technique used in many fields.
D
Compared with the obvious environmental issues we hear about every day, littering often takes a backseat-but it’s more pressing than we may think.
Some may say that a banana peel out of your car along the motorway would be a harmless action. Actually, they are wrong. A banana peel can take up to two years to decompose(分解),and with a third of motorists admitting to littering while driving, that’s a whole lot of discarded banana peels, or much worse. An orange peel and a cigarette butt has a similar biodegrading(生物降解)term to that of a banana, but tin and aluminium cans last up to 100 years, and plastic bottles last forever, so do glass bottles and plastic bags.
Despite the fact that longer-lasting materials will serve to damage the environment and its animals for longer, we can’t only measure the severity of a certain type of rubbish by its lifetime. For example, despite having a fairly short biodegrading span, more than 120 tons of cigarette-related litter is thrown away in the UK every day. Similarly, our regular littering here and there has caused the UK’s mouse population to increase by 60 million. This suddenly isn’t so mysterious when you consider that since the 1960s our annual littering has increased by an amazing 500%.
It’s not a cheap habit either: UK taxpayers spent $500 million on keeping the streets clean. So, it’s not surprising that if caught fly-tipping, you could face a $20, 000 fine. Regardless of how severe the punishment might seem, however, among the reported cases only 2, 000 were punished out of 825, 000, so we still have some way to go in making sure people observe the rules.
To take back our beautiful cities, we need to do more than simply not leaving rubbish where it ought not to be. We need to care more about the world around us.
12. Which of the following is easiest to decompose
A. An aluminium can. B. A plastic bag.
C. An orange peel. D. A glass bottle.
13. What can we know from Para. 3
A. Annual littering has increased a little in UK since the 1960s.
B. Shorter-lasting materials will be less harmful to the environment.
C. Cigarette-related litter is a severe environmental problem in UK.
D. Regular littering has caused the UK’s mouse population to reach 60 million.
14. Which of the following can best describe UK’s punishment on littering according to Para. 4
A. Every little helps. B. A drop in the bucket.
C. No pains no gains. D. Fear is often greater than the danger.
15. What is the best title of the passage
A. Littering, a surprisingly big issue.
B. Environment issue, a big concern.
C. Long-lasting material, a hidden danger.
D. Rubbish collection, an urgent task.

An airport may be one of the last places people would expect to find random acts of kindness, but one frequent flyer is doing what she can to lift spirits.
Holding a handful of homemade happiness, Catharine Knight is hoping to change the world with one kind word at a time. “I just want somebody’s day to be better,” said Knight. “I really just want to make the world a better place.”
While traveling for work, she’s handing out cards to strangers at the airport. Each card contains a message meant to shine a bit of light into these dark days. “You have to wear a mask so you can’t see somebody smile or if they’re sad,” said Knight. “So if you watch somebody’s eyes, you can kind of determine maybe that person needs a little pick-me-up.”
“People need to know that there’s still kindness in this world,” she added.
But in the age of COVID19, you can’t blame Heidi Botkin for being a little skeptical, until the message sunk in. “I was super stressed out when I got the three kids by myself,” said Botkin. “So, yeah, that was a nice little pick-me-up.”
This random act of kindness project started three years ago. Knight and her son Parker write uplifting messages for people they’ve never met and may never see again. More than 25,000 have been written so far, including one for pilot Michael Jones. “It helped, you know, I think everybody’s having their own personal struggles right now,” said Jones.
At a time when we have to stay apart, this is a small reminder that we’re all still in this together.
24. What did Catharine Knight do at the airport
A. Writing uplifting messages for friends

B. To ask people to wear mask.
C. To remind people of important messages.
D. To tell people to be kind.
26. What can we learn from Knight’s behavior
A. One good turn deserves another.
B. A simple act of kindness can make a big difference.
C. A good beginning makes a good ending.
D. Where there is life, there is hope.
27. What’s the author’s attitude to Knight’s behavior
A. Doubtful B. Objective
C. Favorable D. Critical

Magic is a form of entertainment that is based on pretending to do things that are impossible. The magician is a specially trained actor. He tries to make the audience believe that he has the power to do things which are against the laws of nature.
Magic shows are entertaining as long as the audience does not discover how the tricks are done. The magician usually depends on his skill with his hands, on his knowledge of psychology, and, sometimes, on mechanical devices(机械装置). Since magic performance is meant to trick people, the use of psychology is important. The magician must keep people from noticing all the movements of his hands and from thinking about the secret parts of his equipment. He must also lead the audience to draw false conclusions. The magician's success depends on the fact that many things seen by the eye are not the things that matter.
Two basic magic tricks are making objects seem to appear and making objects seem to disappear. A combination of these two tricks makes for some interesting effects. For example, the magician puts a small ball under one of several cups. The ball then seems to jump from one cup to another or to change colour. What actually happens is that the magician, employing quick hand movements or a mechanical device, hides one ball. While doing this he talks to the audience and waves a brightly coloured cloth with one hand. The audience is too busy watching the cloth and listening to the magician's words to notice that his other hand is hiding the ball.
Another favourite trick is to cut or burn something, and then make it appear whole again. What actually happens is that the magician makes the cut or burned object disappear by quickly hiding it while the audience watches something else. Then he “magically” makes it appear whole again by displaying(展示)another object that has not been cut or burned.
28. What is the author's main purpose in writing the text
A. To promote a magic show. B. To teach people to be magicians.
C. To explain the art of magic. D. To praise the talents of magicians.
29. Which of the following is important for a successful magic trick
A. Moving stage equipment. B. Directing the audience's attention.
C. Applying high technology. D. Keeping the performance in secret.
30. What does the author focus on in the last two paragraphs
A. Providing examples. B. Making a summary.
C. Drawing comparisons. D. Explaining a concept.
31. What can we infer from the text
A. Mechanical devices are expensive. B. Most magicians employ assistants.
C. It takes practice to perform magic. D. Small objects are magicians' favourite.
D
The way we cook is important. In many countries, the two sources of heat used for cooking are natural gas or electric stoves. The World Health Organization(WHO) warns that millions of people are dying every year from indoor air pollution. The WHO finds that poor cooking, heating and lighting technologies are killing millions of people each year.
Indoor air pollution results from the use of dangerous fuels and cook stoves in the home. WHO officials say nearly three billion people are unable to use clean fuels and technologies for cooking, heating and lighting. And they say more than seven million people die from exposure to indoor or outdoor air pollution each year. Of that number, the WHO says about 4.3 million people die from household air pollution given off by simple biomass(生物燃料)and coal stoves.
These findings show that the home use of poisonous fuels is to blame for many of these deaths. These fuels include wood, coal, animal waste and so on. Carlos Dora is Coordinator in the WHO’ s Department of Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health. He says people should not use unprocessed coal and kerosene(煤油)fuel indoors. He says opening a window or door to let out the harmful air will not correct the situation. It will only pollute the outdoors. “New technologies and clean fuels can rid people of this problem.”
The United Nations found that more than 95 percent of families in sub-Saharan Africa depend on solid fuels for cooking. It says huge populations in India, China and Latin American countries, such as Guatemala and Peru, are also at risk.
Nigel Bruce is a professor of Public Health at the University of Liverpool. He says researchers are developing good stoves and other equipment to burn fuels in a more efficient way.“There are already many technologies for clean fuels available now. An effective and reasonably low-cost ethanol(酒精)stove that is made by Dometic (a Sweden-based company)is now being tested out. Another interesting development is electric induction stoves.” In India, you can buy an induction stove for about $8. And in Africa you can buy a solar lamp for less than $1.
32. How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed
A. By making classifications. B. By listing numbers.
C. By following time order. D. By describing a process.
33. According to Carlos Dora, what is the best solution to indoor air pollution
A. People should use an effective air cleaner.
B. People should use new technologies and clean fuels.
C People should open a window or door to let out the harmful air.
D. People should prevent themselves from being exposed to harmful air..
34. What can we learn from the passage
A. Most of the deaths from indoor pollution are in developing countries.
B. Burning solid fuels can help limit indoor air pollution .
C. People can buy ethanol stoves made by Dometic in India.
D. There are already two technologies for clean fuels available for use.
35. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. The way we cook is changing.
B. Cause of indoor air pollution.
C. The development of electric stoves.
D. Indoor air pollution kills millions each year.

How to get rid of back-to-school stress
Get organized by visiting the school and meeting the teachers.
It’s great because you get an idea of what the school year will be like and for the rest of the term, whenever your child talks to you about school you can place a face with the name.

The victims were carried in one by one, their paws and fur burned, suffering from lack of water and fear. Their caretakers bandaged their wounds and laid them in baskets with the only thing that was familiar -- the leaves of a eucalyptus (桉树) tree.
As catastrophic fires have burned more than 2 million acres in Australia, dozens of koalas have been rescued from smoky and burning trees and ashen ground. "They are terrified," said Cheyne Flanagan, clinical director of the Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie, the only facility of its kind in the world.
Koalas unlike kangaroos, birds or snakes, do not flee from fires but instead climb trees to the top, where they can curd themselves into a ball for protection and wait for the danger to pass. But during high-intensity fires, such as those that have burned in recent weeks, the animals, conservationists said, are far less likely to survive. Even if the fire itself does not reach the tree top, the animals may overheat and fall to the ground, where they can be burned to death.
The suffering of the koala -- a national symbol of Australia -- has raised questions among conservationists and scientists about what it will take to preserve biodiversity in a country increasingly prone to intense fire, extreme heat and water shortage. While koalas have evolved to exist alongside wildfires, the animals are facing new threats not just from climate change but also from human development, which has affected local populations, impairing their ability to survive fires.
"We have these unique animals not found anywhere else on this planet, and we're killing them," Flanagan said. "This is a big wake-up call."
4. The description of the koalas in Para. 1 is to show .

6. According to the article, which of the following factors may NOT affect the preservation of biodiversity in Australia
A. Global warming. B. Water shortage.
C. Intense fire. D. Extreme heat.
7. From Flanagan's words, we can learn .
A. koalas are not unique animals on the earth
B. people are killing koalas cruelly on purpose
C. measures should be taken to save koalas
D. people should wake up to preserve the earth

Of late, the Chinese media have turned the spotlight on a woman named Li Ziqi, praising her for doing an excellent job of "telling China's story to the world". Li seems to have become an unofficial cultural ambassador showcasing China's history and culture.
Li, 29, lives with her grandma in a small village of Mianyang. She has been posting videos of her daily life on social media platforms since March 2016 to connect to the world.
Her popularity online can be proved from these figures: on YouTube, Li's "channel" has more than 7.61 million subscribers, and the figure is growing daily. On Sina Weibo, one of China's most popular social media platforms, she has more than 21.5 million fans. And each of her 104 YouTube posts has been viewed between 2 million and over 40 million times.
Technically, the fine quality of her cinematographic output is the most eye-catching feature. The stunning scenery of Li's village, her elegant yet confident way of getting jobs done, and the relaxing background music are all appealing to viewers. Culturally, what touches the heart of L's followers is the universal language of love, inner peace, caring for the family and love for nature. Many viewers find inspiration from Li's posts. Others , tired of their technology driven fast paced urban life, find comfort in her simple and tranquil life.
Ironically, Li has not been as well received at home as overseas. Some critics question whether she alone filmed and edited her early posts. A few even accuse her of showcasing the "backwardness" of China to foreigners, while some argue that her presentation of rural China is imaginary. And recently, a debate has started on whether or not Li is "exporting" Chinese culture abroad.
But the fact that Li single-handedly produced her early works has been documented and publicized And she cannot be blamed for having a small crew now that her filming and editing work has increased. As for "exporting culture", Li has never claimed the responsibility of spreading Chinese culture to the world. What she does instead is merely recording and presenting her lifestyle to make a living.
Li's popularity makes us reflect on what should be an effective way of "telling China's story" to the world and changing the stereotype image of China described in some Western media.
8. What's the purpose of the figures listed in paragraph 3
A To suggest that Li is more popular on Sina Weibo than on YouTube.

C. Peaceful. D. Touching.
10. Why does Li post her videos online
A. To make a living. B. To export Chinese culture abroad.
C. To improve her skills in producing videos. D. To show her love for her grandma.
11. What might the author talk about next

根据第二段“It is even more amazing when you realize they’re donating about $45 billion.(当你意识到他们捐赠了450亿美元时,你会更惊讶。)”和划线单词前一句“It must be an amazing feeling to have that kind of money spent on people in need.(把那么多钱花在有需要的人身上一定是一种很棒的感觉。)”以及划线单词所在句“Mark Zuckerberg is one of the richest persons in the world, so most of us will never know what that would be like. (马克·扎克伯格是世界上最富有的人之一,所以我们大多数人永远不会知道那会是什么样子。)”可知,此处说的是我们没有像他那么多的财富,所以我们大多数人都不知道把捐赠450亿美元用来帮助别人的感觉。故选B。

【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“A banana peel can take up to two years to decompose(分解),and with a third of motorists admitting to littering while driving, that’s a whole lot of discarded banana peels, or much worse. An orange peel and a cigarette butt has a similar biodegrading(生物降解)term to that of a banana, but tin and aluminium cans last up to 100 years, and plastic bottles last forever, so do glass bottles and plastic bags.
根据第三段“Despite the fact that longer-lasting materials will serve to damage the environment and its animals for longer, we can’t only measure the severity of a certain type of rubbish by its lifetime. For example, despite having a fairly short biodegrading span, more than 120 tons of cigarette-related litter is thrown away in the UK every day. (尽管更持久的材料会更长时间地破坏环境和动物,但我们不能只通过垃圾的寿命来衡量其严重程度。例如,尽管生物降解的时间相当短,但在英国,每天仍有120多吨与香烟有关的垃圾被丢弃。)”可推断,在英国,与香烟相关的垃圾是一个严重的环境问题。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Regardless of how severe the punishment might seem, however, among the reported cases only 2, 000 were punished out of 825, 000, so we still have some way to go in making sure people observe the rules. (然而,不管处罚看起来有多严厉,在报告的82.5万起案件中,只有2000起受到了处罚,所以我们在确保人们遵守规则方面还有一段路要走。)”可知,作者认为在垃圾方面的处罚力度是远远不够的。选项A“Every little helps. (每一点都是有帮助的。)”;选项B“A drop in the bucket. (沧海一粟、九牛一毛)”;选项C“No pains, no gains. (没有付出就没有回报)”;选项D“Fear is often greater than the danger. (杞人忧天)”。故选B。
【15题详解】

(与我们每天听到的那些显而易见的环境问题相比,乱扔垃圾往往居于次要地位——但它比我们想象的更紧迫。)”以及最后一段“To take back our beautiful cities, we need to do more than simply not leaving rubbish where it ought not to be. We need to care more about the world around us. 故选A。
