Could you live without a TV for one year What would you do with all that spare time Philippa Carling wanted to see if it was possible and persuaded (说服) her family to give theirs up for one whole year.
“I live with my husband and our two children,” explains Philippa, “and I realized just how much time we spent sitting in front of the TV. The children turned it on first thing in the morning and again when they got back from school. My husband and I were no better, We’d spend the evening together talking about very little but what programme was on at that time. Then the family decided, after lots of arguments (争论), that we would try to do without a TV for one year. We had the Internet and everyone was allowed to watch some of the recorded programmes if they had a good reason for doing so. ”And so, on 24th July last year, the Carling family sold their TV.
Eleven months have now gone by and Phillippa believes the experiment (实验) has oven a great success. As she explains, “We were all surprised at how easy it was. The immediate result was we all started to read a lot more, including the children. We spend time together after dinner playing board games around the table and the children finish their homework a lot quicker than before. We talk about what will happen when the year comes to an end and the children have always said they want the TV back. But they’ve also agreed that life has been good without it.”
So will the TV return when the year comes to an end next month “We’re not sure,” says Philippa. “We might decide to buy a new one or we might not. The important thing is we’ve all learnt that life can carry on without a TV. It can even be fun!”

Aristotle once wrote that “happiness is a state of activity”. In other words, whether you’re seeking (追寻) life-long satisfaction or a few moments of good cheer, you’ve got to move forward. We’ve interviewed the professor and found five steps to take toward a sunny mood.
Over a 30-year period, University of Illinois researchers asked nearly 120, 000 people how money, education, volunteer activities and close relationships influenced their happiness. Reported Newsweek’s Sharon Begley on the findings, “The highest levels of happiness are found with the most stable (稳定的) and satisfying relationships. ”
Singing aloud, talking to a stranger, raising your hand: all may increase a feeling of happiness, according to a study from Wake Forest University. Participants(参与者)followed the development of their moods for two weeks and reported feeling happier when they were more outgoing and less happy when the opposite. .
The editors of gave $5 or $20 to 46 strangers by chance. Half the group was told to spend the money on themselves, while the other half was told to spend it on others. Those who’d shared the wealth felt much happier at the end of the day than those who’d spent it on themselves. There was no difference in happiness between those who spent $5 or $20, suggesting that it’s not how much money you spend, but how you spend it, that cheer the spirit up.
Studies from the Positive Psychology Center showed that discouraged (气馁的) people who wrote down three good things that happened to them each day for six months reported an improved attitude (态度).
Drinking water really can help keep you cheerful. A small 2012 study from the University of Connecticut suggested that even slight dehydration (脱水) influenced the moods of its female participants.
