Disagreeing in a polite way
Disagreeing with people in a polite way is a very important skill. In discussion, we need to be able to disagree and present our own opinions in a friendly way.
Wendy: I love reading short stories. “The gifts” is fantastic.
Jim: I’m sorry, but I’m afraid I didn’t enjoy it very much. The story is too simple.
Wendy: I’m sorry, but I don’t agree. I love the surprise ending. I also like Della and Jim. They gave up something for each other. It was really touching.
Jim: Perhaps you’re right, but I think the story is out of date. No one keeps a watch on a chain any more.
Wendy: I’m sorry that you feel that way. It may be old, but many people still think it’s a moving story.
Read the conversation below and practise it in pairs. Pay attention to the words in blue.

Summary
The most valuable gift
The most valuable gift I have ever received is the book The Old Man and the Sea from my mother.
I received it on my 13th birthday. I was so surprised to get it. I was so happy, too. I just failed to pass the exam some days ago and I felt really upset those days. My mother wanted to encourage me to be strong and not to give up. I finished reading the book the next day. I learnt a lot from the book and I understood my mother's love to me.
From then on, I never give up. I keep trying my best. So I consider it the most valuable gift.

I have received so many gifts on my birthdays. Among them, I like my first camera best. It was given by my mother when I was ten years old. This camera can take photos and videos. So I can keep those beautiful moments.
I felt surprised to receive a camera as my birthday gift. I was not interested in taking photos. However, my mother led me to pay attention to the beautiful things in my daily life. Now I have taken more than 300 photos and one of them even got a big prize. I become interested in the lovely and beautiful world. I think I'll keep it forever because it is not only a gift but also the love and expectation from my mother.
