Grace was a single mother with a young son. She taught the first grade and worked very hard. She drove a small old car. One August, the teachers returned from a summer break to see Grace drive up to school with three children. The two girls were Grace’s former students who had lost their parents. They did not want to enter a foster care centre. They turned to Grace—their first grade teacher—for help. Though she and her son lived in a small house, Grace took the girls in.
During lunch, while other teachers shared life stories, Grace never complained about her new responsibilities. She did, however, speak about her car. With three children to transport, the car was too small and slow. It even burned engine oil. Grace needed something new. However, she couldn’t buy one with three children in her home.
As a good friend, I listened to her concerns. At that time,I did not have much money. But I wanted to help Grace buy a car. An idea hit me when I watched a TV show.
One day, Grace received an invitation to a TV show. She was surprised but decided to attend it. Midway through the show the host called Grace to the stage. He explained he had received a letter, knowing her need for a new car. The audience listened to the details of Grace’s story and were all moved. Then the host said that Grace would receive a new car for her family. Cheers filled the studio and Grace shook with disbelief.
Six hundred miles away, I watched the joy of it all from the television in my living room. Grace’s big heart taught me many lessons that year. I did nothing but share her story.
24.What can we infer about Grace according to the first paragraph
A.She knew the girls’ parents.
B.She was very kind-hearted.
C.She wanted to sell her small car.
D.She didn’t have a summer break as other teachers.
25.What troubled Grace

B.She found it hard to raise three kids alone.
C.She couldn’t spare more time for her students.
D.She had no time to transport her kids to school.
26.Why did Grace receive an invitation to the show
A.The author turned to the show for help.
B.The school wanted to make her story known.
C.The school rewarded her for her hard work.
D.The show picked some single mothers to report randomly.
27.What can be the best title for the text
A.A Letter From My Friend B.Helping My Friend Get a Car
C.Inviting My Friend to A Show D.A Single Mother with Three Kids
C
From tiny hummingbirds(蜂鸟) to giant whooping cranes, roughly half of the world’s more than 10,000 bird species migrate(迁徙). Longer wings and powerful flying muscles often help these birds cross vast expanses of air. But a study of nearly all bird species suggests many migrators share another unexpected flight aid: lighter-colored feathers.
Being a bit more lightly colored than non-migrating birds may help these long-distance fliers stay cool as they work hard under the hot sun to fly, researchers report December 6 in Current Biology.
It’s known that color can help birds hide from predators (捕食者) by blending in, or attract mates by standing out. But color has subtle effects too, including regulating temperature by absorbing or reflecting light, says Kaspar Delhey, an expert at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Germany. For example, bird eggs laid in colder climates tend to be darker, which may help keep them warm.
Migrating birds push their bodies to the physiological limit, which creates much heat. Some species cope by rising to cooler air during daytime. “If overheating is a problem in migratory birds, another way of dealing with that would be to evolve lighter colors” that absorb less heat, Delhey says.
Delhey and his colleagues analyzed over 20,000 illustrations of 10,618 bird species, ranking feather lightness for each species and comparing that with how far the birds fly. On average, lightness slightly increased with migratory distance, the team found. The longest-distance migrators were about 4 percent lighter than non-migrators, an effect that wasn’t explained by size, climate or habitat type for different species.
“It’s not a big difference,” Delhey says, noting that many migrators are darkly colored, perhaps for reasons unrelated to flight. But the trend was remarkably consistent.“Very different groups with very different biologies show this pattern,” Delhey says.“That surprised us.”
28.Which of the following ignored previously help migratory birds fly
A. Longer wings. B. Vast expanses of air.
C. Lighter-colored feathers. D. Powerful flying muscles.
29.What does the underlined word “subtle” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Ambiguous. B. Terrible. C. Smart. D. Tender.
30.How do migrating birds deal with overheating in them
A. By evolving lighter colors. B. By reaching bodies’ limit.
C. By flying higher to the sky. D. By absorbing more lights.
31.What can be inferred from Delhey’s study
A. 10,618 bird species fly over a long distance altogether.
B. Species of migrating birds’ feathers vary significantly.
C. Migrators with dark feathers are clearly related to flight.
D. Migratory distance can be judged by feathers’ lightness.
D
Have you ever thrown a camel Camels are large and heavy animals, so it would be hard to do so. But in the French-speaking Democratic Republic of the Congo, “to throw a camel” is a way of saying “to make a spelling mistake”. In the past, a phrase like that was not accepted by the French government as an official French term. But recently, the French Ministry of Culture worked on a new kind of dictionary that accepts the idea that many people in other countries and regions speak the language. The language has changed over time and is different in places like Ivory Coast in West Africa or Quebec in Canada, compared to how it is in Paris.
The new online French dictionary includes new French words from around the world. It was released (发布) on March 18 — just in time for International Francophonie Day on March 20. After its release, it is updated (更新) on a regular basis. It now contains about 600,000 terms. The French Culture Minister says the dictionary is not just for France’s 67 million citizens, but for the 300 million French speakers worldwide.
Supporters say the new dictionary is more democratic (大众化的) than earlier French dictionaries that only showed the way highly educated French people spoke. Official dictionaries produced by the French Academy in Paris were first published hundreds of years ago and are regularly updated. The online dictionary, however, has a new part you cannot find in a book. If you live in Senegal, for example, you can search the dictionary, and it will give you the meaning of a word based on its use in that country.
“The French no longer have a monopoly (独占) on French,” a French magazine that supports the dictionary wrote recently. “And that is good news”.
32. What do we know about the phrase “to throw a camel”
A. It tells us camels are too large to be thrown.
B. It can be found in an ancient French dictionary.
C. It is a phrase still not accepted by the French government.
D. It can be used when you see someone makes a spelling mistake.
33. How is the online French dictionary different from other dictionaries
A. It needs updating regularly. B. It takes in worldwide French usages.
C. It is mainly for non-French speakers. D. It includes few official French terms.
34. What do the supporters think of the dictionary
A. It helps spread standard French. B. It’ll attract more people to learn French.
C. It’ll benefit French’s development. D. It brings 300 million French speakers.
35. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Opinion. B. Culture. C. Technology. D. Lifestyle.

Improving your body language can improve the clarity of your message, make you appear more confident and more attractive, improve your first impressions and even make you feel better. Here are a few tips to improve your body language:
Don’t cross your arms or legs. You have probably already heard you shouldn’t cross your arms as it might make you seem defensive or guarded. 36 Keep your arms and legs open.
37 If there are several people you are talking to, give them all some eye contact to create a better connection and see if they are listening. Keeping too much eye contact might make people uncomfortable. Giving no eye contact might make you seem insecure. If you aren’t used to keeping eye contact it might feel a little hard or scary in the beginning. Keep working on it and you’ll get used to it.
Smile and laugh. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Relax a bit, smile and laugh when someone says something funny. People will be a lot more likely to listen to you if you seem to be a positive person. But don’t be the first to laugh at your own jokes. 38
Smile when you are introduced to someone but don’t keep a smile plastered on your face, or you’ll seem insincere.
Move at a relaxed steady pace. Moving too fast can make you seem nervous and unconfident. 39 It will make you both feel less stressed and more confident at the same time.
With all the above tips, do what you feel natural and don’t overdo anything. Try and improve just one piece of body language consciously each day, and you may be surprised just how much clearer and better you can communicate your point with just a little attention to personal development. 40
A.Go ahead and have a try!
B.Learn to slow down a bit.
C.This goes for your legs too.
D.Make good use of hands.
E.Have eye contact, but don’t stare.
F.It makes you seem nervous and needy.
G.This naturally makes you appear more confident.

录音原文
(Text 1)
W: Tim, are you OK
M: Yes, I’m fine! I’ve been playing table tennis with Andy. We were playing in the game room but then we moved the table out into the garden. I’ve just come to get some tap water!
(Text 2)
W: Do we have homework for Monday I don’t have anything written down.
M: Nothing to read in the textbook, but we have to see a movie and write a paragraph about it.
(Text 3)
W: Could I have a few more minutes to finish
M: I’m afraid not. It’s a timed test.
(Text 4)
W: Weren’t you supposed to be here an hour ago
M: Sorry, but there was a long line of vehicles that couldn’t move for miles.
(Text 5)
M: When does the next bus leave for New York
W: Buses leave for New York every half hour. You just missed the nine-thirty bus by ten minutes.
(Text 6)
W: What’s your favorite branch of science, Mike
M: I have studied biology, chemistry and physics for seven years during secondary school. I decided that chemistry was my favorite and I wanted to do it to a higher level. I recently started my second year of university on a chemistry degree.
W: That’s cool. What are the career opportunities after graduating
M: A college education seems to prepare most chemistry majors for research or lab work, but there are many paths that are open to a chemistry major. So I think my major leads to excellent career prospects.
(Text 7)
M: … and that’s how the sheep got into the house. Next up, it’s Allie with the weather.
W: Hello there.
M: Is it raining at the moment
W: No, it’s stopped raining. This morning, there were light winds and a few showers and there’s still a lot of rain on the ground here. In fact, this afternoon, the showers should be replaced by sunshine. We’re expecting temperatures of about 20 or 21 degrees, so it will be quite warm for this time of year! And it means that there’ll be great weather for anyone planning a picnic this afternoon.
M: Thank you Allie, that’s great to hear!
(Text 8)
M: Mary, I’ve just finished my listening class. It was a bit difficult.
W: Why not enjoy some social activities They give you a chance to practice your English. I’ve just picked up a schedule today.
M: Let’s have a look. What are they doing tonight
W: They’ve got Singing with Guitar on Monday night. They teach you traditional British folk songs. It starts at 8 and lasts for two hours.
M: I’m not much of a singer. And I’ve got a lecture early tomorrow morning. A BBC journalist is going to talk about his experiences. Look, there’s International Evening on Wednesday in the school hall.
W: Yeah, students from all over the world will sing international songs. Would you like to go and see it
M: Yes. Another thing I want to do this weekend is go to Stratford-on-Avon. You have to sign up at the student services office in advance. I’ve got time right now. So I think I’ll go ahead and sign my name.
(Text 9)
W: Henry, I need your advice on my job application letter.
M: OK. Let me see … Well, in Britain, a photo is not expected. It’s unnecessary to include your hobbies as well, because they have nothing to do with the job you’re applying for. I can’t see here that you’ve got a driving license.
W: I didn’t mention it because almost everyone here my age has one. Do I need to put it on my letter
M: Yes. And you’re fluent in Chinese, right
W: Yes. I studied in Nanjing for almost two years as an exchange student. My spoken Chinese is pretty good. I know about 2,000 Chinese characters. I picked up some French while I was teaching Japanese in Paris, but I’m hardly fluent.
M: So let’s include three languages as your skills. Your educational background in Japan is fine, and so is being a teacher in Paris. Why didn’t you mention that you worked for your uncle before
W: I only worked for a month when his office assistant was away. I did photocopying and typing mostly. But I’m not very good at typing. I was too ashamed to include it. Besides, what would happen if anyone gave me a typing test
(Text 10)
I live in a small town. Three years ago, my friends and I decided to convince our local community of the need for a proper park. We soon formed an action group consisting of students, teachers, parents and others — all led by local restaurant owner Martin Ashton. The next thing the action group had to do was to start raising money. We persuaded our school to organize a concert and all the ticket money went towards the park fund. Apart from this, we did everything we could think of to raise money — I took away the rubbish and others organized sales of second-hand books and stuff like that. Six months later, we only had 185, 000. But our target budget was 200,000. In the meantime, John Richardson was helping out with the planning stage of the project. He works as an architect in London and has got close links with colleagues in the United States. They have a company called Xcite, who has won awards for their park design. So the action group held a community meeting. Almost ninety-eight percent said yes to Xcite. Now we have this fantastic new park.
