It was all good, and my mom never complained about the noise, because that was the purpose of a wooden screen door — to slam shut and thus announce that her children were within earshot.
Several years ago, in a fit of nostalgia, I went shopping for a wooden screen door. I was disappointed in the choices available. They looked a bit too solid, too well made. But I found one online, and within a week it was delivered to my doorstep.

I thanked her and went upstairs.

Then I took my hoe (锄头) and went with my brother and cousins to hoe the field, where I got rid of some tiger lilies (虎百合), seemingly ugly with black and small spots.
The sun was so strong that even my face started to bum. My friend thought that guy was our mark. He insisted we should do it separately. He went off to his meeting with a card, and I went off to find my real tag. Then I found a woman.
Middle-aged and overweight, she looked slightly depressed as she was eating her boxed Chinese lunch among the young and the beautiful. I went up with some candies bought in a dessert shop nearby.
"Hello. Can I buy you dessert today " I asked. "Why " she asked, laughing with surprise. "I just wanted to make someone's day today and felt like it should be you."

I had to come on to UC Irvine's campus to accompany a friend to a meeting. In the parking lot, I gave him a smile card and explained my idea. We each were supposed to make a stranger smile, pass on the card, and meet up to share the story of what happened.
To complete it, we were in a shopping area of the campus surrounded by young, smiling, mostly rich people. "No worries," I said as I pulled out my laptop to look for a wireless signal that we could use to hunt for ideas. The only problem was that there was no empty tables to sit at. Just then we spotted an older man. He was sitting alone and enjoying a drink and a cigarette.
"Excuse me, sir, do you mind if we sit here " I asked. "Not at all," responded this fellow. I went inside to get a paper napkin to wipe off the table, as my friend initiated conversation. We talked happily with the man. That's when I told him our scheme and handed a smile card to him too. I told him that spreading smile was my experiment in bridging the gap with what I see missing in so many places. It was an experiment in building more connectivity and happiness in the world.
My friend thought that guy was our mark. He insisted we should do it separately. He went off to his meeting with a card, and I went off to find my real tag. Then I found a woman.
Middle-aged and overweight, she looked slightly depressed as she was eating her boxed Chinese lunch among the young and the beautiful. I went up with some candies bought in a dessert shop nearby.
"Hello. Can I buy you dessert today " I asked. "Why " she asked, laughing with surprise. "I just wanted to make someone's day today and felt like it should be you."
