Hudson had been looking forward to this trip for weeks. This was more than the usual excitement about end-of-year trips. And now, finally, after weeks of expectation, Hudson, Davion, Tasha, and their friends Trey and Justin were at Six Flags Great America, which was home to more roller coasters and games than any place north of Florida.
They were waiting in line for the Twisted Twister—the scariest roller coaster. In front of them, the coaster rose threateningly out of the ground. From the very beginning, the Twisted Twister lived up to its name. The black coaster tracks corkscrewed 5 almost immediately. Then, the riders in the yellow cars were given a moment to catch their breath as they were cranked (转动) slowly to the top of a hill. But the relief didn’t last long. As soon as the roller coaster cars were over the peak, the track twisted again. And again and again and again.
Glancing at it, Hudson felt his stomach was too tight to say anything at all, The Twisted Twister was the scariest roller coaster he had ever seen. But he wasn’t about to mention his fear to his friends. Because they would tell him that he was acting like a little kid, too scared to go on the park’s best ride. He felt dorky and awkward standing there. The sea of people between them and the Twisted Twister was steadily getting smaller. Hudson smiled weakly as his friends cheered when they counted just three rope barriers to go. Then two. Then one. And then they were at the stairs. Davion, Justin, and Trey were nearly jumping up and down with excitement. But Hudson could only hear people screaming, and he couldn’t even tell if the screams were because of delight or terror. And he knew, suddenly, that he could not make it.

The coming of warm weather here in Maine calls for a seasonal ritual that, for me, puts an end to winter—fetching the wooden screen door.
Note that I wrote “wooden”. The aluminum models just won’t do it — they close too neatly and keep their perfect form for decades. In the 1960s, a time of imperfection, there was no perfect house, no perfect car, no perfect kids or parents. Why should a screen door be an exception
I grew up with my siblings in a working-class neighborhood in New Jersey. When the warm weather arrived, my dad would pull out the wooden screen door and install it over the back door, which could then be left wide open, admitting a refreshing breeze (we had no air conditioning).
My father was a Mr. Fix-it, so keeping the screen door serviceable was one of his hobbies. Every few years he gave it a fresh coat of paint and fixed it a bit. I clearly remember him putting the last screw in the last hinge, and swinging the door shut with a “crack”!
A good, wooden screen door, although it was not beautiful, had an invaluable function in the age of the stay-at-home mom: It reminded her of the coming and going of the kids. My siblings, and my friends ran in and out of the house, tearing the screen door open and letting it shut with a bang behind us. A hundred times a day. It was all good, and my mom never complained about the noise, because that was the purpose of a wooden screen door — to slam shut and thus announce that her children were within earshot.
Several years ago, in a fit of nostalgia, I went shopping for a wooden screen door. I was disappointed in the choices available. They looked a bit too solid, too well made. But I found one online, and within a week it was delivered to my doorstep.

My life hadn't been going well during that cold winter. I had been out of work for quite a while. With many bills to pay off, my wife argued with me now and then. Feeling desperate, I decided to go back to my hometown about 400 kilometers away for a visit. It had been 15 years since I left there. I set off on a cloudy afternoon.
With the night falling, the wind was blowing hard and it even began to snow. Suddenly, I had a flat tire (轮胎) and my car was out of control. Bad luck! I managed to pull over the car. Taking out the spare tire and some tools from the trunk, I got down to changing it. However, my hands and feet were nearly frozen, so I couldn't finish the work before dark. I couldn't help wondering how to survive such a tough situation. On a rural road and on such a snowy night, I didn't expect anyone to pass by and lend me a hand. I attempted to call a repairman, but my phone was out of service.
Feeling hungry and frozen, I could do nothing but take a chance----walking a little farther to see if there would be any cottage.
After a long walk, an old wooden house with a dim (昏暗的) light came into sight. It turned out to be a small restaurant! As I entered, an elderly lady greeted me with a big smile. It was closing time, but after learning my situation, she was willing to help. She offered me a cup of hot milk and some dishes. From what she said I knew that she stayed here to run this restaurant and take care of her little grandson while his parents were working in the city. The business didn't work out well, so they lived a tough life. I felt great sympathy for her. To my great surprise, she said I could sleep in her son's room overnight. I thanked her and went upstairs.

When I was a kid about twelve years old, I had a lot of freckles(雀斑). I had reached the age when I had begun to really look at myself in the mirror, and I was overwhelmed.
Apparently my mother was too, because sometimes she’d look at me and shake her head.
I had a cousin whose name was Janette Elizabeth. She looked exactly like her name sounds because she had a flawless peaches-and-cream complexion (肤色). I couldn’t help comparing myself with her and thinking that my life would be a lot different if I had beautiful skin too.
And then, in the back pages of Janette Elizabeth’s magazine, I found the answer: an advertisement for freckle-remover cream. I knew that I could afford it if I saved my money, and I did. The ad assured me that the product would work well. For three weeks I went to the mailbox every day precisely at the time the mail was delivered. I knew that if someone else in my family got the mail, I would never hear the end of it. There was no way that they would let me open the box in private.
Three weeks later, my package finally came. I went to my room with it, sat on the edge of my bed, and opened it. I was sure that I was looking at a miracle. When I got up the next morning, I applied the cream all over my body. Then I took my hoe (锄头) and went with my brother and cousins to hoe the field, where I got rid of some tiger lilies (虎百合), seemingly ugly with black and small spots.
The sun was so strong that even my face started to bum. By the end of the day, when I came back to the house, my family, knowing nothing about the freckle-remover cream, began to say things like “I’ve never seen you with that many freckles before. ” When I saw myself in the mirror, I found my freckles even darker and clearer. I dissolved into tears and hid in the bathroom.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I had to come on to UC Irvine's campus to accompany a friend to a meeting. In the parking lot, I gave him a smile card and explained my idea. We each were supposed to make a stranger smile, pass on the card, and meet up to share the story of what happened.
To complete it, we were in a shopping area of the campus surrounded by young, smiling, mostly rich people. "No worries," I said as I pulled out my laptop to look for a wireless signal that we could use to hunt for ideas. The only problem was that there was no empty tables to sit at. Just then we spotted an older man. He was sitting alone and enjoying a drink and a cigarette.
"Excuse me, sir, do you mind if we sit here " I asked. "Not at all," responded this fellow. I went inside to get a paper napkin to wipe off the table, as my friend initiated conversation. We talked happily with the man. That's when I told him our scheme and handed a smile card to him too. I told him that spreading smile was my experiment in bridging the gap with what I see missing in so many places. It was an experiment in building more connectivity and happiness in the world.
My friend thought that guy was our mark. He insisted we should do it separately. He went off to his meeting with a card, and I went off to find my real tag. Then I found a woman.
Middle-aged and overweight, she looked slightly depressed as she was eating her boxed Chinese lunch among the young and the beautiful. I went up with some candies bought in a dessert shop nearby.
"Hello. Can I buy you dessert today " I asked. "Why " she asked, laughing with surprise. "I just wanted to make someone's day today and felt like it should be you."

【答案】One possible version:
Without a word, Hudson turned, pushed past the crowd and ran out of the line. Their faces blurred in front of him. He’d made it down the stairs before he stopped to take a breath. Now that his fear and panic had started to fade, embarrassment was creeping in. “Hey!” Somehow, Tasha was standing in front of him, “It’s okay if you are afraid. I get so scared before shows that I can’t eat for about two hours before going on stage.” Shocked to hear those words, Hudson stood still without any words. It suddenly hit him that what mattered most was to have fun with his friends.
Just then, he saw his other friends coming, big smiles on their faces. “Are you ready to try with us ” Davion said. Seeing their grins and encouraging eyes, Hudson nodded his head. The moment they got to the stairs, his stomach started to clench again, but he tried to take each step forward. Finally, he got in the car. WHOOSH! Almost without warning, the ride started. It felt like he’d left his heart on the loading platform. He was flying and he heard himself scream as delight spilled out of him. Later when they got out, they took a picture by the ride’s sign. It served as a reminder of what was more important to him than fear.

【答案】Para. 1:
The firm had sent me one with the wrong dimensions, so I asked my carpenter to make the necessary adjustments. He worked away at it for a couple of hours until he got it to sit neatly/perfectly in its frame. I gave it a test: I pulled it open and let go. It closed in a lazy fashion. I still felt disappointed at the adjustments. “Not good,” I pronounced. “Please remove the automatic door closer and adjust the door so it swings shut with a good crack.”
Para. 2:
He went about his work again and a short while later the task was done. The door was uneven in its frame, and the screen no longer lay flat. But when I pulled open the door and released it, the thing clapped shut like a rifle shot. “What do you think ” I asked. “It looks like hell,” said the carpenter. “But it sounds like heaven,” I said. And I, being the owner of the door — and the memory — had the final word.

One possible version:
During the night, I could hardly fall asleep. The wind was so heavy that it seemed as if the old wooden house were to collapse. I couldn't help wondering when the snowstorm would come to an end. At midnight, I heard the boy crying and the grandma singing a nursery song gently to comfort him. She whispered to him, saying that spring was coming and his mom would be home. Though leading a tough life, she was optimistic about the future. Hearing this, I was deeply encouraged.
The next morning, it turned out to be sunny. Before leaving, I paid the grandma, but she rejected it. I expressed my gratitude and secretly put some money in the bed. Back to where my car had been, I surprisingly found that someone had fixed the tire for me. When I was about to
move on, my wife called to tell me how she had been worried about me. I also received an e-mail, telling me to start work the next Monday. On my way home, I recalled the grandma's words, full of confidence again.

My mother called me to the dinner table, but I ignored her. When she came to the bathroom door and demanded that I come out and have a meal, I burst out of the door, tears streaming down my cheeks. Before she stopped me, I stormed into my room and slammed the door shut behind me. Looking into the mirror, I saw a girl with more and darker freckles on the face instead of peaches-and-cream complexion. Only then did I realize that the cream had a reverse effect when wearing it in the sun. I threw myself down on the bed and sobbed.
After what seemed a century, I heard a gentle knock on my bedroom’s door.
Hesitating for a moment, with puffy eyes and still wet cheeks, I shuffled across the room to open the door. At the door stood my mother and Janette with a big bunch of tiger lilies, which were covered with black spots but amazingly beautiful. I stared at them in stunned surprise, not knowing what to say. My mother held me in her warm embrace. “There are all kinds of flowers, and they are all beautiful and sweet,” said she. Hearing this, and smelling the fragrance of the tiger lilies, the freckles on my face seemed to have magically faded.

"Oh, thank you so much," she said. Her laughter changed from surprised to pleased and grateful. "It couldn't have come at a better time. I was having such a bad day. I had my wallet stolen when going to work in the morning. Worse still, I made a big mistake in my job, which made me fined $100 for that." Pausing for a while, she continued, "But your act of kindness spirits me up, and I feel better now."
Hearing her bad luck, I smiled and handed her the smile card. "What's this "she asked. After I explained to her what the smile card was, she cried with joy. "Oh, it is a great idea! Can I do something for someone else too I am sure that there is someone who is suffering tough thing like me! Thank you so much. I hope you have a fantastic day," she said her farewell and I waited for my friend to return and shared our stories.
