Hans had many friends, but the most devoted(忠实的) friend was the Miller. Certainly, he was so devoted to Hans that he always picked some flowers or filled his pockets with fruit when he passed Hans’s garden.
“Real friends should have everything in common(共同的),” the Miller often said. Hans nodded and smiled, and felt very proud of having a friend with such noble(崇高的)ideas. However, when winter came, he had no fruit or flowers to bring to the market, and he suffered (遭受)a lot from cold and hunger. He was very lonely, as the Miller never came to see him.
“There’s no good in my going to see Hans as long as(只要) the snow lasts,” the Miller said to his wife, “for when people are in trouble they should be left alone.”
“You are very thoughtful about others,” answered the wife.
As soon as the winter was over, the Miller took a big empty basket and went to see Hans. When he learned that Hans had a hard time in winter and had to sell his wheelbarrow(独轮手推车), he offered his old broken wheelbarrow to Hans. And he asked Hans to fill his big basket with flowers in return.
Hans was sad about that, for it was really a very big basket, and he knew that if he filled it he would have no flowers left for the market. But he still filled the Miller’s basket. Then the Miller left happily.
In the following days, the Miller kept asking Hans to help him, one after another. Although Hans had a lot of work to do, he didn’t turn the Miller down.
On a stormy evening, the Miller came again. His little son had hurt himself seriously. He asked Hans to go for the doctor. Hans walked about three hours, and finally he arrived at the doctor's house. He told the doctor about that. The doctor rode off in the direction of the Miller's house at once, and Hans walked behind him.

As the future of our country, teenagers should grow up healthily. However, many health problems, such as being overweight, poor eyesight and scoliosis (脊柱侧弯), are common among Chinese teenagers. It is reported that over 5 million primary and high school students in China have something wrong with their spines (脊柱). And the number is still rising every year.
According to a news report, a 13-year-old girl from Hebei was found to have serious scoliosis after a medical check. The doctor said that it was caused by long-time poor sitting postures (坐姿). If her condition didn't improve, it would bring more bad influences on her shoulders and legs. What's worse, perhaps it would lead to the physical disability.
Talking of the disease, many parents and teachers express their worries. In fact, besides (除了) poor sitting postures, there are other causes of the disease. For example, many children don't carry schoolbags properly, and some prefer to carry schoolbags on one shoulder. Moreover, as they grow taller, the school's desks and chairs are no longer suitable for them.
Scoliosis often happens in childhood or the teenage period when children and teenagers grow and develop very fast. So the best way to deal with the disease is early detection (发现) and prevention. Students should have regular (定期的) medical checks. Physical exercise like playing basketball and swimming is also helpful in preventing the disease.

Dear Alan,
I’m sorry to hear about your problems. Here are my suggestions.
When your neighbours are making a noise, I think you can knock on their door politely and tell them you are having trouble in sleeping. They would feel sorry. When your classmates laugh at you, you should pay no attention to them. And you should work hard to improve your pronunciation. If it doesn’t work, ask your teacher for help. If you feel stressed, listen to some soft music in your spare time. When you miss your old friends, call them or talk with them online. It’s not easy for you to get used to life in a new environment. Take it easy! I believe you can make it.
I hope you think my advice is worth taking.
Best wishes,
Li Xiang
