2023届高考英语复习阅读理解练习
Impress the world with skills
In the French division of WorldSkills Competition 2022 Special Edition, Ma Hongda, a post-00 college student from Zhejiang Province, has achieved a breakthrough by bagging the first gold medal for the Chinese team in the “Plastering and Drywall Systems” category.
The WorldSkills Competition, also known as the Olympics of vocational skills for artisans in the world, organized every two years in different countries and regions, is the highest-ranking and most influential vocational education and skills excellence event in the world. Its mission is “to raise the profile and recognition of skilled people, and show how important skills are in achieving economic growth and personal success”.
Ma’s win has stirred up heated discussions among Chinese netizens. Some people said that Ma Hongda’s medal perfectly interpreted “Every trade has its master”; some asked if the world champion could offer some tips on decorating their home; some laymen bluntly said that they didn’t know one could become a world champion by plastering ...
Ma Hongda is a student from Zhejiang Construction Technician College and has been training in the “Plastering and Drywall Systems” category for years. Many people think the job of plastering doesn’t require sound technical knowledge, but an international competition does not allow an operating error of more than 1 millimeter. It is precisely because of his perseverance, attention to detail and hard work that Ma Hongda could stand out in the competition.
What is more gratifying than Ma’s gold medal is that many vocational students and skilled workers have been emerging. In WorldSkills Competition 2022 Special Edition in Switzerland, Li Dexin won China’s first gold medal in cabinetmaking, and Shao Rupeng secured a gold medal in the “fine woodworking” project. In Finland, young Chinese technicians Wang Pei and Dong Qing took home the gold medals in the beauty therapy and fashion technology contests, respectively. In South Korea, the Chinese team made breakthroughs in some events with competitors winning China’s first two golds in 3D digital game art and cloud computing.
These brilliant youngsters have proved themselves to be the best of the best, demonstrated the spirit of craftsmanship of China’s skilled talents, and helped vocational education and training receive better recognition.

FURTHER EXPLORATION
WorldSkills Competition 2022 Special Edition is the official replacement for WorldSkills Shanghai 2022, cancelled in May due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 62 skill competitions have been held over 12 weeks between 7 September and 26 November 2022 in 26 cities in 15 countries and regions across Europe, North America, and East Asia.
In 1946, WorldSkills rose out of the ruins of the Second World War, which devastated (彻底毁坏) the economies of Europe and created a huge skills shortage that threatened a new economic depression. Some took this challenge as an opportunity to introduce young people to the world of vocational skills. Francisco Albert Vidal created a skills contest for the youth of Spain and Portugal. Madrid 1950 was a modest event by today’s standards but an international movement was born. The competition has grown rapidly ever since.
Today, WorldSkills has become much more than an international competition. The organisation is helping young people around the world change their lives through vocational skills.
