任务型阅读【原创】
Effective storytelling is a fine and beautiful art. A well-developed and presented story can cut across age barriers and will hold the interest and reach its listeners. Knowing and applying the basics of storytelling will strengthen your stories.
Finding stories:
There are many kinds of stories you can work with, including folktales from many countries and cultures, humorous tales and traditional fairytales in numerous versions, etc. It is recommended you start with simple folktales. With time and experience you will perhaps want to tell your own personal stories.
Adapting to our audience:
The audience play a very important role in oral story-telling. That’s because oral storytelling involves much interaction between the teller and the hearer. I have observed that our audiences have lost some of the skills to follow a story and see things in their minds, which makes storytelling more difficult. Therefore, you should keep your story brief and simple.
Attracting the attention of our audience:
Many factors affect the attention of your listeners. So tellers always need to be sensitive to the audience and may need to regain their attention before continuing. In order to hold your audience’s attention all the time, you’d better use volunteers from the audience in your story, or have the audience participate in hand motions or making sound effects. Also, making a distinct change in your pace, voice, or mood is helpful in regaining your audience’s attention.
Concluding:
Once you finish the story, stop! Don’t feel you have to explain everything, or tie together all loose ends. Let them go away thinking about what has been said, and drawing their own meaning from it!

【安徽巢湖一中、合肥八中2012—2013学年度第一学期期末考试】
The English are well known for their politeness: it’s everywhere. When squeezing (挤过去) past someone in a narrow passage, people say “sorry”. When getting off a bus, English passengers say “thank you” rather than the driver. In Germany, people would never dream of doing these things. After all, squeezing past others is sometimes unavoidable, and the bus driver is only doing his job. I used to think the same way, without questioning it, until I started traveling to the British Isles, and here are some more polite ways of interacting (交往) with people in UK.
People thank each other everywhere in England, all the time. When people buy something in a shop, customers and shop assistants in most cases thank each other twice or more. In Germany, it would be exceptional to hear more than one thank you in such a conversation. British students thank their lecturers when leaving the room. English employers thank their employees for doing their jobs, as opposite to Germans, who would normally think that paying their workers money is already enough.
Another thing I observed during my stay was that English people rarely criticize others. Even when I was working and mistakes were pointed out to me, my employers emphasized several times but none of their explanations were intended as criticism. It has been my impression that by avoiding criticism, English people are making an effort to make others feel comfortable. This also is showed in other ways. British men still open doors for women, and British men are more likely to treat women to a meal than German men. However, I do need to point out here that this applies to English men a bit more than it would to Scottish men! Yes, the latter are a bit tightfisted.
56.What is the author’s attitude towards English politeness?
A. He thinks it is unnecessary. B. He thinks little of it.
C. He appreciates it very much. D. He thinks it goes too far.
57.What can be inferred from the passage?
A. German men never treat a woman to dinner.
B. The author thinks it’s unnecessary to say “thank you” to the bus driver.
C. In Germany, employers often say “thank you” to employees for their job.
D. Germans think it is unnecessary to thank workers because payment is enough.
58.We can learn from the last paragraph that Scottish men ______.
A. like to fight with each other
B. treat women in a polite way
C. are as generous as English men
D. are unwilling to spend money for women
59.The author develops the text through the method of ______.
A. making comparisons B. telling stories
C. giving reasons D. giving examples

Edward Sims was born in 1892. He was the fifth child and only son of Herbert and Dora Sims. Herbert was a blacksmith(铁匠), and had a thriving trade making horseshoes. He was determined that his first-born son would follow him into the blacksmith. For this reason, Edward had to leave school at the age of 12, and worked with his father.
However, Edward was not cut out to be a blacksmith. Although he has an athletic body, he didn't have strong arms like his father, and he felt dizzy in the heat of the smithy. When he tried to find alternative employment, he found it difficult because he had never learnt to read or write.
One day, he went for an interview at a solictior’s office. The job was a runner, taking documents from the office to other offices in the city. The solicitor was pleased to see that Edward was physically fit, but when he discovered that the young man couldn't read or write, he decided against employing him. "How can you deliver documents to other offices," he asked, "if you can't read the addresses on them?"
Bitterly disappointed, Edward left the building and went to wait for a tram to take him back to the suburb where his father’s smithy was. Next to the bus stop, a man was selling newspapers from a stand .
"Excuse me, son?" he said. "Would you look after my stand for a moment?"
For the next 20 minutes, Edward sold newspapers, lots of them. When the man came back, he was so delighted with his new assistant's honesty, that he offered him a job. Edward took it immediately.
In the next few months, the two men progressed from working on newspaper stands to selling newspapers, tobacco, confectionery(糖果点心)and other goods in a shop. Then they opened a second shop, and a third. Eventually, they had a chain of 25 shops in three cities.
Edward became very rich, so he employed a tutor to teach him to read and write. The tutor was amazed at what Edward had achieved. "Imagine what you could do if you’d been able to read and write when you were younger!" he said.
“Yes!” said Edward. “I could have run myself to exhaustion delivering documents for a solicitor!”

Dear LiMing,
I know you are having trouble adapting to the new class and new classmates and therefore feel upset and lonely. I guess that’s because you are shy and not good at communicating with others. But I believe you can make it if you follow the advice below.
First, don’t wait for others to start a conversation. Just talk to the other students and you will get familiar with them easily. It’s also a good idea to develop your hobbies and get involved in all kinds of class activities, such as discussions, sports games, speech contests and so on. In addition, you can always benefit from showing your friendship and devotion first, cleaning the classroom, wiping the blackboard, or just picking up waste paper from the floor, for example. I’m always here to help you, and so are most of our classmates. So be confident of yourself.
I do hope you’ll find these suggestions helpful.
Yours,
Zhang Hua
