I am a New Yorker, and I was born and raised in New York. You can see many beggars in this city. A beggar can make more money by begging in a day than some people with jobs.
I never give money to a beggar—never. But last night around 3:00 a.m., I stopped at a McDonalds in Harlem to use the bathroom. I saw a beggar in the door waiting for me to head over to him so he could open the door for me and ask for change. I was mad already. “Why can’t I go to the restroom without him asking me for money!” I thought.
I have no problem saying “No” to people who beg for money. I guess New Yorkers are all used to it. But, as I approached him and he held open the door for me, I looked into his eyes and something touched me. , I reached into my pocket but only some coins were there. I gave them to him.
Sitting in the bathroom I looked through my wallet and found some change—about 3 quarters, 2 nickels and some pennies. I was going to give him the nickels and pennies. But it was hard for me to part with quarters and I battled myself over the change.
Finally I walked out of the bathroom, change in hand, and as I went through the door that he held open for me, I dropped all the change in his hand.
I rushed to my truck and wanted to get home because I was so tired. As I pulled away I watched the man counting the change in his hand and smiling. I may not know if he was really hungry or not, but I know for sure that I won the battle over the change. Giving help to others always makes you the winner.

【河北省保定一中2012-2013学年高二上学期第四次阶段考试】
1.Most people consider skydiving (高空跳伞) a product of the 20th century, but its history actually goes further back than that. The Chinese attempted parachuting (跳伞) in the 10th century, a thousand years before we did.The Chinese did what we would today call base diving;that is, they jumped off a place that would allow them to float from a height to the ground.
The first person to attempt to parachute was a Frenchman named Jacques Garnerin. He jumped from his air balloon at the end of the 18th century and did tricks on the way down and stupefied the crowds by landing safely on the ground. At the end of the 19th century, Kathie Paulus, a brave German woman, became famous for her skydiving skills.
Once the airplane was invented, skydiving took on a whole new form. The airplane made it possible to dive from greater heights at greater speeds, allowing for more range in the movements in the air.A woman named Tiny Broadwick became the first woman to jump from a plane in 1913 and to dive free fall in 1914.
Skydiving was not called skydiving until the middle of the 1950s, when Ronald Young coined(创造)the word.It had been called parachuting prior to this and was primarily used by the military to land troops in inland locations, or for pilots to bail (跳伞) out of their planes when necessary.Once World War Ⅰ was over, parachuting became a sport, which we now call skydiving.
After World War Ⅱ, this activity became more a hobby than a military maneuver(行动).Soldiers were trained in parachuting and enjoyed the thrill so much that they continued on for fun. From this, teams and competitions were formed.Skydiving schools appeared in the late 1950s and now it is a recognized extreme sport enjoyed by many.

A new guidebook says being happy is just like being fit—you need to practice the skills needed to get this emotion, even during the darkest times.
Road-testing Happiness:How to be Happier by Australian journalist and author Sophie Scott is a self-help book with a difference. “Being happy is something you need to focus on, it doesn’t come as a matter of course,” Scott said. “You always need to make an effort to be happy, even if you reach the point of saying you are contented, you still need to keep focusing and working on the things that made you happy.” Scott also said the book was born out of her interest in the human mind as well as how difficult she found it to cope after her mother died of cancer two years ago.[来源:学&科&网]
“I was always interested in psychology, but a lot of happiness books don’t address the fact that you can be happy even if your life isn’t going according to plan. The key is managing expectations.” She says, “In the book, I focused on what were the things most likely to make people happy, the ones with the most scientific evidence.” People should think that being happy is yet another task you have to do and then feel guilty when you don’t do it.Scott says the road to a positive outlook begins with very easy, small steps.
“Women in particular today :they’ve got to be thin, got to have a career, got to have a perfect relationship so the last thing you need is to be thinking you’ve got to be happy all the time, ” she said. “But it is important to improve your quality of life.Stop rushing around and filling each moment of the day with things to do, and then sit down and think about your life and how you’re feeling. The things I got out of this were not things that take a lot of effort: feeling more grateful for the things you’ve got;adjusting your reaction to situations and people. It’s about changing small habits, more tinkering around the edges instead of totally checking and changing your life.”

59.Which of the following can best reflect Scott’s opinion?
A.Happiness lies in accepting what you have.
