The world is divided into six major plates: Asia-Europe plate, Pacific plate, American plate, African plate, Indian Ocean plate and Antarctica plate.

Earthquakes occur because the earth's crust accumulates stress in the process of plate movement. When the Earth's crust can no longer accumulate stress, the Earth's crust breaks, releasing seismic waves that shake the ground.
