I first read about CRM in 1980.Not long after that, an attending doctor and I were flying in bad weather. The controller had us turn too late to get our landing ready. The attending doctor was flying; I was safety pilot He was so busy because of the bad turn, he had forgotten to put the landing gear (起落架) down.He was a better pilot - and my boss - so it felt unusual to speak up.But I had to: Our lives were in danger.I put aside my uneasiness and said, "We need to put the landing gear down now!" That was my first real lesson in the power of CRM, and I've used it in the operating room ever since.
CRM requires that the pilot/surgeon encourage others to speak up.It further requires that when opinions are from the opposite, the doctor doesn't overreact, which might prevent fellow doctors from voicing opinions again. So when I'm in the operating room, I ask for ideas and help from others.Sometimes they're not willing to speak up.But I hope that if I continue to encourage them , someday someone will keep me from ”landing gear up”.

根据第一段的“They don't listen because they already know it all'”可知作者认为医生们总是认为自己什么都知道,所以就不听别人的意见,故选B项。
S7.A细节理解题。根据第二段最后的“I put aside my uneasiness and said,‘We need to put thelanding gear down now!'” 根据该段中的“The attending doctor was flying.he had forgotten to put the landing gear(起落架)dowm”可知是我的老板驾驶飞机而不是我,故排除B项;在我的提示下飞机安全着陆了,故排除C项;事情发生在我俩开飞机时而不是老板给病人做手术的时候,故排除D项。

When I was 12, all I wanted was a signet (图章) ring. They were the "in" thing and it seemed every girl except me had one. On my 13th birthday, my Mum gave me a signet ring with my initials(姓名首字母) carved into it. I was in heaven.
What made it even more special was that it was about the only thing that wasn't being "replaced". We'd been burnt out in fires that swept through our area earlier that year and had lost everything—so most of the " new" stuff (东西) we got was really just to replace what we'd lost. But not my ring. My ring was new.
Then, only one month later, I lost it. I took it off before bed and it was missing in the morning. I was sad and searched everywhere for it. But it seemed to have disappeared. Eventually, I gave up and stopped looking for it. And two years later, we sold the house and moved away.
Years passed, and a couple of moves later, I was visiting my parents' when Mum told me that she had something for me. It wasn't my birthday, nor was it Easter or Christmas or any other gift-giving occasion. Mum noticed my questioning look. " You'll recognize this one," she said, smiling.
Then she handed me a small ring box. I took it from her and opened it to find my beautiful signet ring inside. The family who had bought our house 13 years earlier had recently decided to do some redecorations, which included replacing the carpets. When they pulled the carpet up in my old bedroom, they found the ring. As it had my initials carved into it, they realized who owned the ring. They'd had it professionally cleaned up by a jeweler before sending it to my mother. And it still fits me.
56. The underlined word "in" in the first paragraph probably means "_____".
A. fashionable B. available C. practical D. renewable
57. When she got the ring back, the writer was about _____.
A. 13 years old B. 15 years old C. 26 years old D. 28 years old
58. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. The writer's family moved several times.
B. The writer never stopped looking for her ring.
C. The writer's ring was cleaned up by the new house owner.
D. The writer lost her ring in the morning when she took it off.
59. What would be the best title for the passage
A. My New Ring B. Lost and Found C. Lost and Replaced D. An Expensive Ring
56-59 ADAB
故选A。
On my 13th birthday, my Mum gave me a signet ring with my initials(姓名首字母) carved into it.可知作者在13岁的时候,妈妈给了她戒指做礼物,从第三段two years later, we sold the house and moved away.。 The family who had bought our house 13 years earlier had recently decided to do some redecorations, which included replacing the carpets.
Years passed, and a couple of moves later,,可知作者搬了几次家。句中的a couple of和A项的several意思相近。故选A。

Poet William Stafford once said that we are defined more by the detours(绕行路)in life that by the narrow road toward goals. I like this image. But I as quite by accident that I discovered the deep meaning of his words.
For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents’ home in Boise in nine hours. We traveled the way most people do: the fastest, shortest easiest road, especially when I was alone with four noisy, restless kids who hates confinement(限制)and have strong opinions about everything.
Road trips felt risky, so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to. We would stick to the freeways and arrive tired.
But then Banner, our lamb was born. He was rejected by his mama days before our planned trip to Boise. I had two choices: leave Banner with my husband, or take him with me. My husband made the decision for me.
That is how I found myself on the road with four kids, a baby lamb and nothing but my everlasting optimism to see me through. We took the country roads out of necessity. We had to stop every hour, let Banner shake out his legs and feed him. The kids chased him and one another. They’d get back in the car breathless and energized, smelling fresh from the cold air.
We explored side roads, catching grasshoppers in waist-high grass. Even if we simply looked out of the car windows at baby pigs following their mother, or fish leaping out of the water, it was better than the best ride down the freeway. Here was life. And new horizons(见识).
We eventually arrived at my parents’ doorstep astonishingly fresh and full of stories.
I grew brave with the trip back home and creative with my disciplining technique. On an empty section of road, everyone started quarreling. I stopped the car, ordered all kids out and told them to meet me up ahead. I parked my car half a mile away and read my book in sweet silence.
Some road trips are by necessity fast and straight. But that trip with Banner opened our eyes to a world available to anyone adventurous enough to wander around and made me realize that a detour may uncover the best part of a journey----and the best part of yourself.

Some people believe that a Robin Hood is at work, others that a wealthy person simply wants to distribute his or her fortune before dying. But the donator who started sending envelopes with cash to deserving causes, accompanied by an article from the local paper, has made a northern German city believe in fairytales (童话).
The first envelope was sent to a victim support group. It contained ?10,000 with a cutting from the Braunschiveiger Zeitung about how the group supported a woman who was robbed of her handbag; similar plain white anonymous (匿名)envelopes, each containing ?10,000, then arrived at a kindergarten and a church.
The envelopes keep coming, and; so far at least ?190,000 has been distributed. Last month, one of them was sent to the newspaper 's own office. It came after a story it published about Tom, a 14-year-old boy who was severely disabled in a swimming accident. The receptionist at the Braunschiveiger Zeitung opened an anonymous white envelope to find 20 notes of ? 500 inside with a copy of the article. The name of the family was underlined.
“I was driving when I heard the news," Claudia Neumann, the boy's mother, told Der Spiegel magazine. “I had to park on the side of the road; I was speechless."
The money will be used to make the entrance to their house wheelchair-accessible and for a course of treatment that their insurance company refused to pay for.
"For someone to act so selflessly, for this to happen in such a society in which everyone thinks of himself, was astonishing," Mrs. Neumann said. Her family wonder whether the donator is a Robin Hood character, taking from banks to give to the needy.
Henning Noske, the editor of the Braunschiveiger Zeitung, said: "Maybe it is an old person who is about to die. We just do not know." However, he has told his reporters not to look for the city's hero, for fear that discovery may stop the donations.

“Have a nice day” may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says “Have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well.
“Have a nice day. Next!” The version of the expression is spoken by a salesgirl at supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. The words came out in the same tone ( 腔调 ) with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else’s is the management’s attempt to increase business.
The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting at an end. Sometimes the expression saves us when we don’t know what to say. “Oh, you just had a tooth out I’m terribly sorry, but have a nice day”
The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says “Have a nice day” to you, you may find it heart-warming because someone you don’t know has tried to be nice to you.
Although the use of the expression is insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strange and comfortable way, it’s nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don’t care all that much. While the expression may not often be sincere, it is always spoken The point is that people say it all the time when they like.
26. How does the author understand Maxie’s words
A. Maxie shows her anxiety to the author.
B. Maxie really wishes the author a good day.
C. Maxie encourages the author to stay happy.
D. Maxie really worries about the author’s security.
27. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean
A. The salesgirl is rude.
B. The salesgirl is bored.
C. The salesgirl cares about me.
D. The salesgirl says the words as a routine.
28. By saying “Have a nice day", a stranger may _____.
A. try to be polite to you
B. express respect to you
C. give his blessing to you
D. share his pleasure with you
29. According to the last paragraph, people say “Have a nice day”_______.
A. sincerely B. as thanks C. as a habit D. encouragingly
30. What is the best title of the passage
A. Have a Nice Day—a Social Custom
B. Have a Nice Day—a Pleasant Gesture
C. Have a Nice Day—a Heart-warming Greeting
D. Have a Nice Day—a Polite Ending of a Conversation
26.细节理解根据第一段后半句“I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me.”
根据第四段最后一行“because someone you don't know has tried to be nice to you.”

Honey from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees' nest and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper - a little bird called a honey guide.
The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax in the beehives (蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees' nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always fall to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.
Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.
56. Why is it difficult to find a wild bees' nest
A. It's small in size. B. It's hidden in trees.
C. It's covered with wax. D. It's hard to recognize.
57. What do the words "the follower" in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. A bee. B. A bird. C. A honey seeker. D. A beekeeper.
58. The honey guide is special in the way______.
A. it gets its food B. it goes to church
C. it sings in the forest D. it reaches into bees' nests
59. What can be the best title for the text
A. Wild Bees C. Beekeeping in Africa
B. Wax and Honey D. Honey-Lover's Helper
1. 细节理解由第一段 “Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them.”
由 “the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches.”
由第三段最后一句 “They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.”

In the animal kingdom, weakness can bring about aggression in other animal. This sometimes happens with humans also. But I have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people. I see it every day when people hold doors for me, pour cream into my coffee, or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy.
From my wheelchair experience, I see the best in people, bur sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don’t get to see this soft side of others often, we try bevery way possible to avoid showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when we stop pretending we’re brave or strong do we allow people to show the kindness that’s in them.
Last month, when I was driving home on a busy highway, I began to feel unwell and drove more slowly than usual. People behind me began to get impatient and angry, with some speeding up alongside me, horning (按喇叭) or even shouting at me. At the moment I decided to do something I had never done in twenty four years of driving. I put on the car flashlights and drove on at a really low speed.
No more angry shouts and no more horns!
When I put on my flashlights, I was saying to other drivers, “I have a problem here. I am weak and doing the best I can.” And everyone understoof. Several times, I saw drivers who wanted to pass. They couldn’t get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak.
Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don’t feel that way. But those are and far between. More often, it would be better if we don’t pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we are brave when we are scared.
46. The author has discovered that people will feel happy when ______.
A. the offer their help
B. they receive others’ help
C. they feel others’ kindness
D. they show their weakness
47. The author feels sad sometimes because ______.
A. he has a soft heart
B. he relies much on others
C. some people pretend to be kind
D. some people fail to see the kindness in others
48. What did the other drivers do when they saw the flashlights
A. They speed up to pass.
B. They waited with patience.
C. They tried their best to help.
D. They put on their flashlights too.
49. In this passage, the author advises us to ______.
A. handle problems by ourselves
B. accept help from others
C. admit our weakness
D. show our bravery
50. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. A Wheelchair Experience.
B. Weakness and Kindness.
C. Weakness and Strength
D. A Driving Experience
46.A. I see it every day when people hold doors for me,pour cream into my coffee,or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy. 故A正确.
47.D. 根据文章第2段第2句sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily.
No more angry shouts and no more horns!
More often,it would be better if we don't pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we're brave when we're scared.
More often,it would be better if we don't pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we are brave when we are scared.

When you're lying on the white sands of the Mexican Riviera, the stresses (压力) of the world seem a million miles away. Hey, stop! This is no vacation - yon have to finish something!
Here lies the problem fat travel writer and food critic (评论家) Edie Jarolim. "I always loved traveling and always liked to eat, but it never occurred to me that I could make money doing both of those things." Jarolim said. Now you can read her travel advice everywhere-in Arts and Antiques, in Brides, or in one of her three books. The Complete Idiot Travel Guide to Mexico's Beach Resorts.
Her job in travel writing began some eight years ago. After getting a PhD in English in Canada, she took a test for Frommer's travel guides, passed it, and got the job. After working at Frommer's, Jarolim worked for a while at Rough Guides in London, then Fodor's, where she fell so in love with a description of the Southwest of the U.S. that she moved there.
Now as a travel writer, she spends one-third of her year on the road. The rest of the time is spent completing her tasks and writing reviews of restaurants at home in Tucson, Arizona.
As adventurous as the job sounds, the hard part is fact-checking all the information. Sure, it's great to write about a tourist attraction, but you'd better get the local (当地的) museum hours correct or you could really ruin someone's vacation.
46. Which country does Jarolim have in now
A. Mexico. B. The U.S. C. The U.K D. Canada
47. What is most difficult for Jarolim
A. Working in different places to collect information
B. Checking all the facts to be written in the guides.
C. Finishing her work as soon as possible.
D. Passing a test to write travel guides.
48. What do we know about Jarolim from the text
A. She is successful in her job.
B. She finds her life full of stresses.
C. She spends half of her time traveling.
D. She is especially interested in museums.
49. What would be the best title for the text7
A. Adventures in Travel Writing B. Working as a Food Critic C. Travel Guides on the Market D. Vacationing for a Living
The rest of the time is spent completing her tasks and writing reviews of restaurants at home in Tucson, Arizona.
As adventurous as the job sounds, the hard part is fact-checking all the information.

The year I turned fifty, I resolved to do something new every day. However, balancing 365 new things with work and family, while still managing to do the laundry and get dinner on the table every night, was not always easy. In the early weeks of the project, I found it difficult to find so many new things.
It wasn’t long before my friends learned that I was open to almost anything I could consider a new thing, and the invitations began pouring in not just from friends, but friends of friends. As a result, my life was new. I went dog sledding. I attended a fashion show. I went to numerous lectures on all kinds of topics that I never would have previously considered useful or interesting and found something to appreciate in every single one. I even signed up immediately when learning about a local group trying to get into the Guinness Book of World Records by doing something unusual.
As time went by, whenever I learned about something that seemed remarkable, I did what I could to pursue it. Instead of “Why”, I began to ask “Why not”. Now I find it is easier to just keep my eyes open to the possibilities that surrounded me. It turned out that there were new things everywhere, and all I had to do was make a little effort to enjoy them.
I looked back on the year. It doesn’t matter to me that many of my “new things” weren’t exactly meaningful. What matters is how to make full use of them when discovering there is an endless number of new things for me. It seemed to me an obvious sign that at fifty, my life was full of promise. I could continue to grow, stretch my wings, and learn more every day for the rest of my life. I enjoyed the idea of something new, and it gave me a reason to welcome each day as an opportunity to experience the world a little differently.

根据第一段“The year I turned fifty, I resolved to do something new every day. However, balancing 365 new things with work and family, while still managing to do the laundry and get dinner on the table every night, was not always easy. In the early weeks of the project, I found it difficult to find so many new things.”
根据第二段中的“I was open to almost anything I could consider a new thing. I went to numerous lectures on all kinds of topics that I never would have previously considered useful or interesting and found something to appreciate in every single one.” appreciative(欣赏的)是文中appreciate的形容词。故选B。

What matters is how to make full use of them when discovering there is an endless number of new things for me.” 故选A。
由最后一段的“I looked back on the year. I enjoyed the idea of something new, and it gave me a reason to welcome each day as an opportunity to experience the world a little differently.”

About 15 years ago, Andrew McLindon, a businessman and crazy cyclist, was riding his bike in Austin, Texas, when he thought about Jack, a friend’s 12-year-old son. Jack had never known the joy of biking because he suffered from hydrocephalus(脑水肿), a buildup of fluid in the brain that often causes balance disturbances.
When he got home, McLindon, now 60, went online and found a three-wheel bike with a balancing bar, perfect for a child with balance issues. Soon Jack was riding around the street with his friends, having fun and getting exercise. But there was more, as his friend told McLindon. “I’ll never forget the smile on his face when my son is interacting with other kids.”
That smile launched the McLindon Family Foundation. Funded by donations, the group works with clinics to find children who can benefit from owning an adaptive bike and to help make each bike to the particular needs of the child. A bike may include a headrest, a shoulder belt, a seat belt and soon. The bikes are expensive-$3,000 to $4,000, and that’s with the foundation’s producer’s discount. For kids lucky enough to get one, they’re a life changer.
“We worked with a 14-year-old who has spina bifida(脊柱裂),” says McLindon. “She spent most days on the couch watching TV. Soon after she got her bike, she was training for special-needs triathlons(三项全能运动). In a magazine interview, she said, ‘I always knew there was an athlete in me.’”
So far, the foundation has given away45 0 bikes, and that’s just a start. “I do a lot of things. I run a lot of companies,” McLindon says. “But getting these kids their bikes is the most important thing that I do.”

The other day, while taking a drop-in art class, I had an experience that I don’t always have when I’m engaged in something creative. I was fully in the zone. My instructor even commented: “You’re on fire today.” Painting after painting was flying out of me. I felt free—a very unfamiliar feeling for me.
Class started off with quick thirty-second figure drawing, then we worked our way up to one-minute, and then finally four-minute sketches (素描). Ever since the instructor told me not to go over the same line twice, I’ve really struggled with finding my freedom in figure drawing. But that day I was completely free, and as a consequence, my line quality was much better. I felt completely unconcerned with what the teacher thought of my work. It was one of the most enjoyable creative experiences I’ve had.
Afterwards, I was reflecting on why this was such a pleasurable experience. This is how I always want to feel while creating.
I think this was so enjoyable because it was a drop-in class. Not a full course. Not to get a master’s degree. Therefore, I felt no responsibility for getting it right. I was able to take it less seriously and just have fun with it. And I wasn’t monitoring myself to make sure that I was improving.
If you practice at your chosen craft, you will improve over time. Worrying about whether you’re getting better doesn’t help you improve. It actually slows down your growth. Your intellect might think it’s helping out, but it’s actually slowing you down and making your creative process less fun. Eventually, there’s truth to the simple saying—practice makes perfect. Since there’s no perfection in the world of creativity, practice makes better.
Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Create even though it won’t be perfect. Create because it won’t be perfect. Create even though it won’t be perfect. Create because it won’t be perfect. Create because your spirit needs to express itself. That is where the freedom is. That is where the joy is.

A. She did what she liked. B. She learnt the basic skills of sketching.
C. She had no inspiration to create works. D. She couldn’t keep up with other students.
6. What can we learn about the author from the text
A. She focuses on gaining better drawing skills.
B. She has no sense of responsibility in her daily life.

D. She has found the reason for the pleasurable experience.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Practice makes perfect
B. Begin enjoying drop-in art classes

“Can we eat this one, Dad ” my four-year-old daughter, Alicia, asks. We’re on one of our Thursday adventures, searching the nearby woods for eatable mushrooms. She’s pointing at a bright-red cap covered with white dots. I pull out my handy mushroom-identification app, which notes that Amanita muscaria, while eatable if prepared properly, is also a known hallucinogen (致幻剂). I have a firm “tell them the truth and be as precise as possible” philosophy and explain what the app says, and that I don’t think our Thursday adventures are ready to get quite that adventurous yet.
Watching your kids learn new skills is extraordinarily rewarding, but I’ve experienced more personal growth than I have at any other point in my life.
Last year, after a winter of practicing skiing on the green tracks for beginners each week, Alicia was french-frying her way down blues and even attempted her first black. That month also witnessed me visiting the mountain more times than in the 15 years combined and I’ve got myself a partner for life.
It’s not all easy—but sometimes that’s the point. Alicia practices the violin every day, and although she enjoys it, even 15 minutes of practice can upset her. The trick, I’ve found, is to let her watch me try to get better at something, too. I start taking piano lessons at 41 years old with the idea that if she sees me struggling as I practice and then improve, she’ll understand that things don’t come easy, even for grown-ups. I know there’s going to be a time when I’ll end up on the sideline cheering her on as she finds her own passions. I’m okay with this, and I’m hoping that by then she’ll carry the joy of practice and knowledge through life.
4. What does the father imply by saying “I’ve got myself a partner for life.”
A. It is rewarding to learn new skills. B. Skiing has become his lifelong hobby.
C. He will explore more with his daughter. D. His daughter will accompany him forever.
5. Why does the father start learning to play the piano
A. To prove it is never too old to learn. B. To set a good example for his daughter.
C. To experience the joy of piano practice. D. To share with his daughter musical knowledge.
6. Which of the following can best describe the father
A. Rigid and humorous. B. Cautious and inspiring.
C. Creative and thoughtful. D. Ambitious and patient.
7. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Thrill of the Skill B. Practice Makes Perfect
C. Like Father, Like Daughter D. The Power of Knowledge

根据第二段“Watching your kids learn new skills is extraordinarily rewarding, but I’ve experienced more personal growth than I have at any other point in my life.”(看着你的孩子学习新技能是非常值得的,但我经历的个人成长比我生命中其他任何时候都要多。)以及划线句前“Last year, after a winter of practicing skiing on the green tracks for beginners each week, Alicia was french-frying her way down blues and even attempted her first black. That month also witnessed me visiting the mountain more times than in the 15 years combined ”(去年,艾丽西亚在为初学者准备的绿色雪道上练习了一个冬天的滑雪之后,她在蓝色中级雪道一路摸索,甚至尝试了她的第一个黑色钻石雪道。
根据最后一段“I start taking piano lessons at 41 years old with the idea that if she sees me struggling as I practice and then improve, she’ll understand that things don’t come easy, even for grown-ups. ”(我从41岁开始上钢琴课,心想如果她看到我在练习和进步的过程中苦苦挣扎,她就会明白事情来之不易,即使对成年人来说也是如此。)可知,父亲开始学弹钢琴为了给女儿树立一个好榜样。故选B。

If your image of a computer programmer is a young man, there’s a good reason. Data from many big tech companies have shown how few of their employees working in programming and technical jobs are female. Google has the highest rates: 17% of its technical staff is female.
It wasn’t always this way. Decades ago, it was women who pioneered computer programming. But too often, that’s a part of history that even people in the computing industry don’t know.
Last week, I took a trip to the birthplace for today’s computer revolution, Stanford University, and randomly asked over a dozen students if they knew who was the first computer programmer. Only one student, Cheng Daofan, got close. “It’s a woman,” she said, searching her mind for a name. “It’s not necessarily an electronic computer. I think it’s more like a mechanic computer.”
She’s probably thinking of Ada Lovelace, who was born in England on December 10,1815. Lovelace was Lord Byron’s child, and her mother, Lady Byron, did not want her to turn out to be like her father, a romantic poet. So Lady Byron used mathematics to keep her from becoming a poet.
But Lovelace saw poetry in math. At 17, she met Charles Babbage, who showed her his plans for the Analytical Engine that he believed would be able to do complex mathematical calculations. He asked her to write about his work for a scientific journal. In the article, Lovelace expressed a vision for the machine that went beyond calculations.
“A computer could do anything. Letters of the alphabet, musical notes and even the positions on a chess board could be represented by numbers,” wrote Lovelace. She even gave an example on how to load an instruction into the machine.
Babbage’s machine was never built. But his designs and Lovelace’s article were read by people building the first computer a century later. In 1979, a new computer language was named “Ada” in recognition of her pioneering work with Charles Babbage.
4. What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph
A. Women are not allowed to work as programmers.
B. Women play a key role in computer programming.
C. The environment in big companies is not friendly.
D. Most of the programmers in big companies are men.
5. What can we say about Lady Byron
A. She was skilled in educating children.
B. She might be unhappy with her husband.
C. She was good at discovering her daughter’s talents.

Stuck inside his room at an assisted living center, Bob Coleman knew he could not go out in public with the epidemic (疫). But he was not cut off from outside: he shared his love for country music over the Internet. “Hello, everybody. It’s a bright day in Tennessee,” he said into his microphone. “This is Bob Coleman, coming to you from Room3325…”. Then Coleman began to play the music he loves-hits from country music stars. The 88-year-old carefully chooses each song.
Coleman and several other retirees have turned into DJs (流行音乐播音员), for a new online radio hour known as “Radio Recliner.” A marketing company called Luckie came up with the idea of Radio Recliner. Listeners can send song requests in honor of family or friends. For example, listeners might hear a message like this: “Hey, Granny. This is your favorite granddaughter Amy. We just wanted to call in and say we love you.” The 60-minute show started with retirees in middle Tennessee. It has since expanded, with residents of assisted-living centers in other states taking part in the project. Many jumped at the chance to work as a DJ to ease the loneliness of social distancing rules.
Mitch Bennett serves as Luckie’s chief creative officer. He says the idea was to provide a sense of community to older people. “For this generation, radio was the original social media,” Bennett said, “Dedicating a song to someone you love and having them hear it along with everyone else is a special way of connecting.”
In Georgia, 80-year-old Ed Rosenblatt, who had made full preparations for his show, said an hour he spent playing songs on Radio Recliner resulted in a flood of text messages, emails and calls from family and friends, and many of the messages were from people he had not heard from for years.

A. try to be polite to you
B. express respect to you

D. share his pleasure with you

A. They speed up to pass.
B. They waited with patience.
C. They tried their best to help.
D. They put on their flashlights too.

A. Rigid and humorous. B. Cautious and inspiring.

7. Which can be a suitable title for the text
