I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a newspaper around the culture we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. B. informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. Missy was one of my friends. I knew we had chosen each other.
The next day, I anxiously expected the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. B called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy’s name was called.“So I’m in group tree,” I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!
Then I heard it. The last group: “Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina.” I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group — the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who wore weird (怪异的) clothes. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends.
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. B. She looked at me and knew what I was there for. I was determined to convince her I should be in the “good” group. “Why ” I started.
She gently placed a hand on my shoulder. “I know what you want, Karina,” she said, “but your group needs you. I need you to help them get a passing grade on this task. Only you can help them.”

In 1989 an 8.2 earthquake almost flattened America, killing over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. In the midst of utter devastation and chaos, a father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
After the unforgettably initial shock, he remembered the promise he had made to his son: “No matter what, I’ll always be there for you!” And tears began to fill his eyes. As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school, it looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.
He began to direct his attention towards where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son's classroom would be in the back right comer of the building; he rushed there and started digging through the ruins.
As he was digging, other helpless parents arrived, clutching their hearts, saying: "My son!” “My daughter!" Other well- meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: "It's too late! They're all dead! You can't help! Go home! Come on, face reality, there's nothing you can do!”
To each parent he responded with one line： "Are you going to help me now " And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone. The fire chief showed up and tried to pull him off the school s ruins saying, Tires arc breaking out, explosions arc happening everywhere. You're in danger. We1 II take care of it. Go home.1' To which this loving, caring American father asked, ° A re you going to help me now ”

Life is a series of choices and we can't always foresee the consequences.
Hary Saleem, an obese man with too much money and power, faced a choice. Outside his office waited his personal doctor, bringing him vital news about the only medicine that could save his life. On the other side of the world, one of his engineers waited for his decision on an important matter of business.
His secretary asked whether she could bring the doctor in. The billionaire businessman made his decision. “No, let the fool wait” shouted Saleem, angrily. “Business comes first.” Despite the health problem caused by his huge weight, he was still obsessed with making money. He raised a fat finger, and one of his staff hurried to switch on a large television set.
The screen flashed to life, and Saleem's engineer appeared. The man talked by satellite directly to his master although they were thousands of miles apart. “I's all ready to blow, Mr. Saleem,” he said. “Just say the word.”
His engineer was standing above Pakan Valley in South America. A few months ago, it had been a rainforest. Then Saleem's men had come, cutting down all the valuable plants and forcing the villagers to move out. Across the bottom of the valley, a dam had been built. This would provide power for the factories that Saleem planned to build in that area. The factories would bring him vast profits.
He saw no reason to delay. He ordered the engineer to press the button. And then a cloud of dust rose up, followed shortly by a dull explosion. A large river changed its course and water flooded into the doomed Pakan Valley.
“Good, that's that. Now, get that doctor in here,” he commanded. The doctor came in with a worried look and started to examine his wealthy patient. “You are doing very well, Mr. Saleem,” he said finally. “The new medicine is saving your life. The only difficulty is getting more of it.”

As I bravely walked to where the others in my group sat, I could hear the laughter from my friends. I sat down and we started. Different newspaper columns were assigned according to interests. We did research. Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three partners. There was no need for pretending — I grew sincerely interested in learning something about them.
Finally the result of assignment came out. Mrs. B gave us an A on that assignment.
