My Kindergarten Hero
We had just completed a unit on community heroes, and I had given my kindergarten class a task to write or draw about their favorite hero. Each child was busy creating colorful masterpieces such as firefighters, policemen and doctors. Several students had chosen to draw larger-than-life brothers and sisters or moms and dads.
However, one little boy was having difficulty with the assignment. Cameron had touched my heart early in the school year. He had dark brown hair and wore his thick glasses. He looks like a younger version of Harry Potter at best. He often snorted (鼻息声) when he laughed, and the rest of the class would laugh along with him.
Cameron suffered from autism (自闭症), but that didn’t matter to me or his classmates. We all loved him just the way he was. He was full of wonderful stories and brought a special feeling to our classroom. I sat and watched as Austin worked with Cameron. Austin had a wonderful way of interacting with Cameron and he helped him find his hero. Within a few minutes, Cameron quickly began drawing blue lines and curves on his paper—he was particularly fond of the color blue.
Finally, it was time for everybody to share their hero pictures. I listened as each student proudly stood in front of the class, picture held high, and described his or her hero. Several students described their heroes by giving them superhuman strength. It was finally Cameron’s turn to share his hero. Cameron stood up and anxiously placed his large blue stick-figured drawing in front of his face. He then quickly burst out it was a picture of me. He added that I helped him learn things and then quickly sat back down. Tears began to form in the corner of my eyes, but nothing could have prepared me for what happened next.

Thomas Mayfield had a major problem to solve in his fifth-grade classroom. “I’m not good at adding. I don’t know how to regroup or borrow. I’m not good at subtracting (减法). Or I don’t know my facts yet, and I’m a fifth-grader,” Mayfield’s students used to tell him. The 42-year-old math teacher from Fort Worth, Texas, took their frustrations to heart. Mayfield knew it was important to try something new, especially because most of his students were also struggling outside of the classroom. Single-parent homes, low financial stability... a lot of that was going on.
Mayfield teaches at Title I school, where at least 40% of students are economically disadvantaged. He grew up going to these types of schools in Fort Worth, too. As a child, he loved to go to school, but always had great difficulty with the study of math. Besides, due to the fact that he had to take much time to help deal with the family’s financial situation, it seemed harder for him and children in similar situations to learn some subjects, especially math, well.
To reach students in a way that was familiar and inviting, he brought rap music to the classroom. He even made some videos, in one of which he played an instrumental beat to Luniz’s song I Got 5 on It. This got his students excited, even crazy. Then they started to rap about decimal point (小数点). “Now let’s break this thing down,” rapped Mayfield and students in the video.
Let’s start with the tenths
Like a dime (1角硬币) to a dollar there’s 1 out of 10
Then we move to the hundredths, one part out of many
One out of 100, we call that a penny
……
They rapped and made popular music videos with thousands of views about math, and motivational songs like passing the big end-of-year exam.

Andrea Lessing is a relatively new employee at Goodwill. Her job is sorting donated stuff. She has been working the job for about a month and a half and is already not surprised by some of the stuff she found.
People donate all kinds of things to Goodwill, and sometimes don’t always remember to empty out their pockets or purses before handing them over. It turns out that they can sometimes accidentally “ donate ” their cash too.
While going through a couple of sweaters, Andrea felt something extra heavy. At first, she thought that it was a pile of books, but then realized it was something more valuable. Wrapped inside the sweaters, she found piles of envelopes filled with $100 bills. All counted up, the money was worth $42,000. And no, the money wasn’t fake either. It was completely real!
Andrea, who’s also a mom, decided to do the right thing and report what she found. Thanks to identifying documents also left with the sweaters, the employees were able to trace the money back to its owner.
Normally, most people donate to Goodwill without leaving their identities. Or they at least try to keep their personal identifying information away from the clothing they donate. But in this instance, along with the forgotten money, the person who donated the sweater also forgot some documents that included their name.
For Andrea, returning the money was a no-brainer. She wants to try her best to put out positive energy. She also says that she was motivated by doing right for her daughter and being the best mom she can be.
Andrea explained, “ I have a daughter. I love her very much, and you can’t put a price on my daughter, and I know what could be risked if stealing that money. I do believe that if you do something good, it will come back to you. ”

A Wise Friend
This story begins one late afternoon in Carl's backyard, in Detroit, Michigan. Carl and I were sixteen years old. We had just finished playing stickball, and I was about to get on my bike to go home.
Wait a minute, Benny. "Carl yelled. He ran into his house and came back with a book for me to take home and read. All he said was, "See if you like it, and it will help you a lot. "I said absolutely nothing. I hated school because I hated reading. I kept the book for a couple of weeks and then returned it unread. Carl never asked me whether I liked it or not
During the following two years, Carl lent me three more books. The last one was Martin Eden by Jack London. Each time I returned them unread.
A few days after graduating from high school, Carl asked, "Benny, I'm applying for Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, and what college are you going to "
"I'm not going to college. "
"Why not " he asked.
"Because my father can't afford the seventy-five dollars for tuition. "
"Is that it " Carl asked.
"Yes, "I said
I lied. I had no intention of going back to school now that I was out.
The following day Carl knocked on my door and handed me a check for seventy-five dollars from his father.
I think that should do it, "he said
Once again I was in shock. What could I say except thank you Because I was working full-time in my brother's bakery, I enrolled in two classes at Wayne State University in Detroit part-time at night.
Halfway through the semester, and after receiving failing grades on exams and essays, I decided that there was no way I would ever become a brilliant student and get satisfactory grades. I dropped out of college and continued working in the bakery.

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As the saying goes, life lies in movement. Doing exercise every day will keep our body and mind active and keep us from diseases. I love all kinds of sports, whether they are indoors or outdoors.
This time I decided to sign up for the upcoming weekend trip to Dalat that our community leader Travis was organizing. Coincidentally, two of my best friends, David and Henry, went with me.
Dalat is a mountain town about seven hours away from Saigon, and a popular destination for climbing. We were determined to take an overnight bus to Dalat from Saigon, an interesting and exciting experience on its own. The bus station was more like a large parking lot where lots of buses parked there, all ready to go. We waited and hoped that we'd make it on our own bus. Eventually we boarded a bus that was lit up in bluish-purple like a club. It had bunk beds for us to sleep in. I excitedly climbed up to mine.
The ride should have taken about 5 hours, but took as long as 7 hours. That was because the bus was running on the mountain road all the time, which gave us an early taste of the ad-venture. I looked up and was afraid that the bus ride was unsafe because we were basically hugging cliffs the whole way. I just closed my eyes and tried to avoid thinking about falling off the road.
Once in Dalat, we checked into our hotel and then went exploring the town. We woke up early the next day. Having prepared climbing supplies, we drove to the main event of the weekend—climbing. Then we went to the foot of the mountain where flowed a huge waterfall. You couldn't see how big the waterfall was. The roar of the water was deafening. We were overwhelmed by the extraordinary workmanship of nature. When I saw so many cliffs, I felt my heart beating almost out of my chest. I couldn't help grabbing the hands of David and Henry. Anyway, the thrilling climbing kicked off.

When Austin stood up to share his picture, I was certain it would be a policeman. But he surprised me when he proudly held up a picture of his friend Cameron. He shared that Cameron was his hero because he had this sickness that made it really hard to learn, but he was like Superman and was really smart. He had drawn a red cape on his cartoon-like picture of Cameron and decorated the costume with a large red “C” on Cameron’s chest.
Cameron suddenly stood up, and put his arms up in the air as if he were going to take off and fly. He joyfully shouted out, “I’m Superman!” The entire class stood up and began striking Superman gestures, too. Within minutes, we were all laughing as though we had each truly discovered the secret of becoming superheroes. Teachers are tasked with a very important job, leading their children in discovering their own amazing qualities and helping them find their inner superhero.

【答案】Learning math through music has been a successful strategy. In fact, Mayfield saw results within a school semester. State scores rose. Student growth rose. Kids started caring more about coming to school. Parents were really happy to watch different events that they didn’t normally see. Last year, he even started engaging students nationwide by creating songs for teachers so they could capture students.
Pareece Morehouse is one of Mayfield’s former students. She is now in tenth grade and loves old-school rap. Before Mr. Mayfield's class, Morehouse didn’t like math and struggled with it. But pairing the difficult subject with music was game-changing for her. She can recall herself at home doing homework and singing the song in her head, helping her understand what she had learned better. It has been really a great way to help her make it through math. With the beautiful songs, Mayfield has inspired her to do better in school.

A few years after I got married, a wedding gift arrived in the mail from Carl, which was a book, just Martin Eden. “What a waste,” I said. “It will never get read.” But then, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that Carl was trying to tell me something. “What do you have to lose ” my wife asked. “Carl took the time to send it to you; you might as well take some time and read it. Once you’ve read it, you can do anything you want.” A couple of days later I started to read the book. By the time I finished reading the book, which took me over two years, I recorded the definitions of hundreds of words in the margins.
Now I understood why Carl wanted me to read the book. For the first time in my life there was a ray of hope that I did not have to remain ignorant for the rest of my life. Once the world of books opened up to me, it became a road of excitement at the turn of every page. Only those who have been buried so deeply in ignorance, and have been able to see the light by reading books, can possibly understand the thrill of becoming enlightened. My life would never be the same again. More importantly, it was never too late.

The first few feet weren't o bud. At some point, though, the water was beating down on my face. As a skinny girl, climbing such a high mountain is a great challenge for me. I slipped and almost fell down. It ended up fine, since David and Henry held me up. They asked me in unison, "Are you OK " I said it was OK and kept going I never fell behind and struggled to climb upstairs However, the higher we went, the harder it got
Travis suddenly turned around and shouted, "Focus on teamwork!" Then we helped each other and shared food to build up our strength. What made me continue going was the overwhelming support I got from the group. In the last 100 meters from the top of the mountain, hand in hand, we finally arrived at our destination. Everyone cheered loudly. We came to realize that perseverance and team cooperation were the key to climbing.
