Carl Wilhelm Scheele ranks as one of the greatest scientists of all time, but he paid a big price for this honor.
Born in 1742 in present-day Germany, Scheele learned about chemicals from his parents starting at a young age. When he was 14, he was sent away to Gothenburg (哥德堡) to become the apprentice (学徒) of a family friend. There he spent eight years studying chemistry and conducting experiments late into the night. Next, Scheele moved around the Holy Roman Empire, working for different chemists and becoming more learned in his trade. In 1767, he moved to Stockholm, where he discovered tartaric acid (酒石酸).
After three years in Stockholm, he became the director of the Locke Laboratory. It was there, while he was analyzing a strange reaction, that Scheele became the first person to identify oxygen.
He called the element “fire air” because he believed, based on the theories of his time, that a substance that made up fire was released from items when they burned. Scheele believed oxygen to be this substance, not understanding that oxygen is merely an element that facilitates (促进) the chemical reaction that is fire.
As historic as this discovery was, Scheele seldom got credit for it, largely because English scientist Joseph Priestley published findings on oxygen before Scheele, even though it is now generally accepted that Scheele made the actual discovery first.
Through his work, he thus exposed himself to many harmful materials. These chemicals had a deadly effect on Scheele, and he eventually died of kidney failure in 1786.
Sadly, in spite of his many achievements and the fact that he gave his life to chemistry, Carl Wilhelm Scheele is often forgotten in the history of science. Though he discovered many elements before other better-known scientists did, his unwillingness to both attend meetings of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and to publish his work allowed other scientists to take credit for discoveries that he had made.
24. Who first taught Chemistry to Scheele
A. His parents. B. Joseph Priestley. C. His family friend. D. The Holy Roman Empire.
25. When did Scheele probably discover oxygen

Girls should take part in competitive sport to build confidence, and the leaders of a group of girls’ schools will argue this week. Helen Fraser, director of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), will tell the group that sport can help girls deal with failure.
“All girls, not just the sporty ones, should take physical exercise,” Ms. Fraser says. Research that girls are far less active than boys is worrying, she argues. Ms. Fraser will tell the group that she supports “sport for all”. “That’s why I love it when our schools have A, B, C and D teams and beyond,” she says.
The GDST draws on research from the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation which suggests only a quarter of girls in England meet basic levels of activity each week. One in five girls do no activity at all, twice the proportion of boys, the research suggests.
Ms. Fraser says other research suggests that more than 80% of women business leaders played sports while growing up. She uses the examples of former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who once was a skater and tennis player, and the head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, who was in the French national swimming team. Ms. Fraser says Olympic medallists like Jessica Ennis and Katherine Grainger are excellent role models for young women but says women’s sport needs more money and more news reports.
Valerie Dunsford, head of Sheffield High School for Girls, part of GDST, said it was important to offer a large number of sports to attract different types of girls. “Not everyone wants to be out playing the hockey.” said Ms. Dunsford.
28. Which of the following ideas would Ms. Fraser agree with
A. Boys are born to be sport lovers.
B. Girls are less confident than boys.
C. More should be done to make girls do sports.
D. Those taking part in the sport are always successes.

Do you continue to be healthy in social isolation NASA is looking for people to spend 8 months locked in a Russian lab for a new experiment.
When humans go to the moon and travel to Mars, they will need to be prepared for long-term space travel and even longer stays on these far-off destinations. Currently, NASA's Artemis program aims to land humans on the moon for the first time since NASA's Apollo 17 mission landed in 1972.
While the moon is the main goal of NASA's Artemis program, the agency's larger goal is to send people to Mars. But long-term space travel and habitation won't be easy. Such missions will present both physical and mental challenges as astronauts work to not only survive, but perform important scientific research in uniquely difficult environments.
In the upcoming NASA-Russia experiment, a group of people will live in a closed facility at Russia's Institute for Biomedical Problems, which is in Moscow. This habitat facility was used in 2011 for notable series of Russian mock (模拟的) Mars missions known as Mars 500. During these missions, groups of people spent 520 and 105 days on two separate missions in the facility.
The facility, according to the statement, will have "environmental factors similar to those astronauts are expected to experience on future missions to Mars". The group of people will spend 8 months living together in isolation and working on scientific research.
By living and working in this Mars-like environment, participants in this study will help NASA researchers better understand the psychological and physiological (心理和生理的) effects of isolation. These missions help researchers not only perform relevant science experiments but also see how people might get on under strange conditions for long periods of time.
So, if you're finding that living in social isolation works for you, you might be particularly well-suited for living in a Mars-like environment and this could be for you. But first, you have to qualify. NASA is looking for "highly motivated" Americans between the ages of 30-55, who must speak both Russian and English fluently and have a Master of Science, Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Medicine, or military officer training. Applicants with other related experience may also be considered. Those who are chosen to be a part of this group will be paid for their work.
32. What do we know about the new experiment
A. It will find the best way for humans to live on Mars.
B. It is the first of its kind to be carried out since 1972.
C. It is prepared for NASA's human spaceflight program.
D. It will decide the people to be sent to the moon by NASA.
33. Why does the author mention "Mars 500" in the text
A. To explain why the facility has been chosen.
B. To compare the similarities among related missions.
C. To show Russia's achievement in space exploration.
D. To indicate the new experiment will have great success.
34. What is Paragraph 6 mainly about
A. The process of the experiment. B. The purposes of the experiment.
C. The popularity of the experiment. D. The preparations for the experiment.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Artemis: NASA's new program B. Love isolation NASA wants you!
C. NASA's Mars exploration program D. Want to have a trip to Mars Come!

FIFA, soccer's governing body, will seek to expand the Women's World Cup from 24 to 32 teams and double the prize money.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino wants more teams for 2023, but knows FIFA must work quickly "We will discuss it as a matter of urgency and se if we can already decide to increase for 2023, in which case we should reopen the bidding process and allow everyone to have a chance to organize or maybe co-host for some of those who have been bidding already for a 24-team World Cup, ""Nothing is impossible and based on the success of the 2019 World Cup, of course we have to believe bigger and to do what we should have done already probably some time ago, "Gianni said before the July 7 final between the United States and the Netherlands. The U, S. women's team won 2:0, which helped the growth of women's soccer.
Gianni earlier prioritized(优先考虑)enlarging the Men's World Cup. He pushed for a jump from 32 to 48 teams for the 2026 World Cup that the United States co-hosts with Canada and Mexico. A bid to speed up the process of expansion for the 2022 tournament in Qatar failed in May. That event will see teams dividing a $440 million prize. In addition, club teams, meaning professional teams, that let their players participate in the Cup will receive a total of $S209 million.
However, women's teams earn much less for competing at the women's event. FIFA plans to double the prize money and will spend more to prepare players and pay clubs releasing players. Gianni said that share would total $100 million. Gianni said FIFA would double its spending on women's soccer to $1 billion. Later, he said that most of it will not be going directly to players. Most of the money would be reserved for soccer federations(联合会)to request for specific projects that would require approval from FIFA.

Backpacks are convenient. They can hold your books, your lunch, and a change of clothes, leaving your hands free to do other things. Someday, if you don't mind carrying a heavy load, your backpack might also power your MP3 player, keep your cell phone running, and maybe even light your way home.
Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and the. Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass. , have invented a backpack that makes electricity from energy produced while its wearer walks.
The backpack's electricity-creating powers depend on springs used to hang a cloth pack from its metal frame. The frame sits against the wearer's back, and the whole pack moves up and down as the person walks. A mechanism with gears(传动装置)collects energy from this motion and transfers it to an electrical generator.
Surprisingly, the researchers found, people walk differently when they wear the springy packs. As a result, wearers use less energy than when carrying regular backpacks. Also, the way the new packs ride on wearers' backs makes them more comfortable than standard packs.
The backpack could be especially useful for soldiers, scientists, mountaineers, and emergency workers who typically carry heavy backpacks. These people often rely on global positioning system(GPS)receivers, night-vision goggles(夜视镜), and other battery-powered devices to get around and do their work. Because the pack can make its own electricity, users don't need to give up space in their packs to lots of extra batteries.
For the rest of us, power-generating backpacks could make it possible to walk, play video games, watch TV, and listen to music, all at the same time. Electricity-generating packs aren't on the market yet, but if you do get one eventually, just make sure to look both ways before crossing the street!

During my second year in high school, I got sick and missed a few days. When I returned, I was greeted with two essays due (到期的), three days of math and history homework, plus several tests. The next day at school, I got a rude awakening: I’d totally forgotten to prepare for the test on Romeo and Juliet! Worse still, I had missed the in-class discussion and all the notes. When lunch time came, I went to the English room to face my certain doom (厄运). All I could do was try to guess at the questions I didn’t know.
As it turned out, I didn’t know the majority of the questions. I was just about to give in when my pencil accidentally fell and broke. Standing by the blackboard and sharpening my pencil, I looked down and there in full view lay the answer sheet for the test! What good fortune! I can kiss good-bye to all my worries of failing the test! My heart started beating, and my brain whispered, “Yes! Read over the answers — quickly!” This was quickly followed by another voice, “No! You’ll get caught!” My mind turning back and forth, “Yes! No! Yes! No!” …This went on for ten of the longest seconds in my entire life.
Finally, I decided to finish the test on my own, without cheating! I was satisfied with my decision but pretty certain I had failed the test.

After I mastered my first concerto (协奏曲) at the age of 14, my parents decided to get me a nice violin. I tried out dozens of instruments before I found my match: a German violin. It was beautiful, but what I liked best about it was its voice. Confident and strong, it was everything I longed to be.
I’m not sure how much that violin cost, but my parents made me promise never to let it out of my sight. They didn’t understand that pulling a large violin case ran counter to my daily middle school task of not being noticed. I was a strange, absent-minded kid. When I spoke up in class, my comments brought confused silence from teachers and wild laughter from students. Like a deer in a wolf pack, I tried to be quiet and still.
However, my new violin was almost shockingly loud. Together, we were much louder than the rest of my middle school orchestra — which was encouraged, since the other kids made sounds like cats’ crying. For one wonderful hour every day, I was showered with attention. Everyone wanted to hear what I had to say.
Between classes, I bent under the combined weight of my violin case and a backpack filled with books. My body suffered, but my confidence grew. With my violin by my side, I found my voice. More and more, I contributed to class discussions and even made a couple of friends.
Today, I’m just an excellent violinist with a regular day job. As I sit in my community orchestra, sometimes I feel jealous (嫉妒的) of my fellow musicians’ instruments with their elegant voices. I may not be the best violinist around, but at least I’m still the loudest.

Famous Irish poet Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) once wrote: “Ah! Realize your youth while you have it.” He pointed out the important truth about how precious youth is in one’s journey through life.
However, the popular Internet slang word foxi - or Buddhist - is challenging this norm by encouraging young people to remain calm and peaceful and avoid conflict as much as possible — in other words, to live like a Buddha.
The phrase was reportedly created in Japan in 2014 to describe young men who no longer bother to start relationships with women or follow someone else’s life path. They prefer to stay in their own peaceful world without being disturbed and care little about passion and success.
Now, Chinese Internet users are pairing the phrase with other words to describe a similar mindset. For example, “Buddhist students” are those who study just the right amount - they don’t cut class, but they don’t burn the midnight oil, either. There are also “Buddhist parents”, who interfere (干涉) little with their children’s lives and let them develop however they like - the opposite of “helicopter parents”.
In this fast-changing and competitive world, it’s only natural that people are seeking a spiritual anchor. However, some would compare foxi with “demotivational culture” - a phrase that describes young people who feel aimless and powerless. They say that foxi actually reflects the reality that young people are losing their will to fight. They are pretending to keep a healthy and wise attitude toward failure simply because they’re incapable of succeeding.
But no matter what, there is one thing that “Buddhist youngsters” should keep in mind: You may want to keep a calm mindset regarding failure, but you should also be passionate about school, work and life. After all, Wilde also wrote: “Live the wonderful life that is in you! Let nothing be lost upon you. Be always searching for new sensations. Be afraid of nothing.”
28.Which would be considered as “Buddhist” by Chinese Internet users
A.A man refusing to date with girls. B.A person refusing others’ advice.
C.A parent caring too much about his child. D.A student never working extra hours.
29.What does the underlined word “demotivational” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Full of energy. B.Lacking motivation.
C.Physically healthy. D.Absent-minded
30.What’s the writer’s suggestion to “Buddhist youngsters”?
A.Being positive. B.Being cooperative.
C.Being considerate. D.Being content
31.What is the best title of the passage
A.Peaceful, or aimless B.Foxi is popular nowadays.
C.What should Buddhist youngsters do D.Foxi helps live a wonderful life.

Newcastle University research is helping to prepare for and relieve storm damage before extreme weather occurs. Climate experts and engineers have created a new model to predict the damage caused by extreme weather. This new framework for “consequence forecasting” enables first responders to effectively target resources before an extreme weather event comes, such as Storm Eunice.
The pre-event decision-making model works by first developing relationships between wind speed and faults on the electricity network. The relationships are then used to estimate faults of electricity networks and potential customer interruptions. This model can be used as early as 24 hours before extreme weather events.
Published in the journal Climate Risk Management, the study findings can enable effective first response to manage infrastructure (基础设施) systems smitten by dangerous weather. Having the forecasting tools to predict and prepare for storm damage will reduce the social consequences of extreme weather, including power loss for customers and fines for electrical distribution companies.
Dr Wilkinson said, “Our model has the potential to change the way we manage weather and climate risks to our infrastructure networks. While electricity network operators already prepare extra resources when a storm approaches, predicting how many power lines may be blown down and where these are likely to be located will allow them to better target the necessary resources to more quickly repair any damage. This is likely to become even more important in the future as our changed climate is predicted to produce more frequent and more intense storms and some of these may be beyond the experience of the people tasked to deal with them.”
Study co-author, Professor Hayley Fowler, of Newcastle University’s School of Engineering, added, “This consequence forecasting is so important for planning emergency response in fast-evolving storms like Eunice. Our model could be used to regularly update energy companies and other infrastructure operators on the potential consequences of approaching storms as forecasts are updated in real-time.”
32.What can the new framework do
A.Prevent extreme weather from happening.
B.Help rescuers effectively find resources before extreme weather.
C.Rid people of the possible extreme weather.
D.Help climate engineers create more models.
33.Which word can replace the underlined word “smitten” in paragraph 3
A.Attracted. B.Inspected.
C.Attacked. D.Impressed.
34.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.The significance of the model. B.The potential risks of the model.
C.The downsides of the model. D.The working principle of the model.
35.What would be a suitable title for the text
A.Prevent extreme weather occurring frequently
B.Provide electricity network operators extra resources
C.Update energy companies and other infrastructure operators
D.Predict and prepare for the impact of approaching storms

After living in Michigan all my life, I can't help but say that there are so many things to do here and so many places to visit. Just have a careful look at the following ones.
Sleeping Bear Dunes
If you want to be more adventurous this summer, make a trip here. Spending your clay climbing the mountains of sand isn't only a work out, but a perfect way to challenge your courage. Making it to the water might takes a little while, but the view at the encl is completely worth it.
Grand Haven
I'm a little prejudiced, because this is where I was born and grew up. Besides staying at the beach all clay9 visitors can walk the streets of downtown, which is right next to the water, watch the musical fountain at night, or even go boating. Near Holland and Muskegon, Grand Haven is not a place that you will be bored this summer.
Mackinaw Island
It's one of the most beautiful places to spend your time this summer. Take a weekend trip to the island where there are no cars. Take time to go biking around the Island, go hiking in the allowed places, and visit historical landmarks to make your trip more unforgettable.
The Upper Peninsula
There are so many beautiful places in the UP that it takes you a week just to cover the places you should visit. The Pictured Rocks on Lake Superior is a beautiful site. St. Ignace borders the straits of Mackinac and is featured with lighthouse, hiking and fishing. Artificial intelligence (AI) has grown into a hot spot industry in recent years, and it has witnessed an increasing number of start-up projects and expanding financing. However, the prospering trend in the field may hit a wall in 2019.
According to a white paper regarding the AI industry released last July by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology China is home to 4,040 AI companies at present. However,70 percent of the firms have failed to receive venture capital (风险投资).
In this regard,it's fair enough to say that this year might bring about a cold winter for the industry,at least for those selling “fake” AI technologies.
“It’s becoming hard for AI technologies to be applied in the market and 90 percent of the start-ups in this industry may fail if proper fields of application are not found,”said Ai Yu, Managing Director of China Everbright Limited,a Hong Kong-based financial services company.
Experts said that AI will see a larger application in people's work and life this year, and core sectors such as AI chips will become more and more professional, making it difficult for entry into this industry.
Large numbers of AI start-ups have been popping up in China, and some of them are leading the world in facial recognition, autopilot and natural language interaction, said Liu Jiong, chairman of the board of Lanting Capital, a cross-border, medical focused strategic consulting and investment firm.
However, there still are many AI firms that haven't found proper methods to make 、 money, which is an issue that the Chinese AI industry must face in the future.
“Given the current money shortage in the capital market,a large number of companies will be gradually knocked out because of their relatively weak technical strength, ” said Liu Wanqing, venture partner of DayWin Asset Management. According to him, those backed by powerful technologies are expected to embrace sound development.
Insiders noted that more and more companies were calling themselves AI firms with the inflow of large amount of money into the AI industry, but it still couldn’t hide the fact that many of them were knocked off. Blindness and aimless investment would only hold back the healthy development of the industry, and the only way for sustained development is to smash the “bubbles” first.

Twenty-five young musicians from around the world have come to California to train and perform this month. They will take part in an international program called iPalpiti. The name comes from the Italian word for heartbeats. Eduard Schmieder is the program's conductor and musical director. Schmieder and his wife started the program in 1997 with help from the great violinist Yehudi Menuhin.
This year, the festival concentrates on music from the 1600s to the 1900s and the musicians come from 19 countries, including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Israel and Italy, Schmieder notes some of the musicians are from countries that are at war with each other. And also the music world is quite small, so you’re only one person away from knowing everyone else.”
The musicians taking part in the program are of ages from their late teens to their 30s. Schmieder said they include winners of major music competitions. Peter Rainer is a violin player from Germany. He serves as concertmaster, the link between the musicians and conductor.

When I was five years old, my parents would have to pull me home from yet another painful English vacation. I still didn't want to leave. I want to be away from home. I wanted to go somewhere new and exciting. This became the theme of the next twenty years. I'd spend the whole year counting down to my next holiday, and then as soon as I left I'd begin to dread having to return home. Year after year.
Ten years ago, I decided to build a life that I didn't want to escape from. I knew I wanted to travel in the long term, but I didn't have a lot of money or savings, and there is no one paying for my adventures. For five years, I did three jobs while studying full-time at university. I didn't eat out and I didn't buy anything I didn't need. I even moved in with my parents. I was able to save ﹩16,000 over those five years, which was enough to keep me on the road for a couple of years.
But what if two years wouldn't be enough? Before leaving, I began to spend my time in making plans that would allow me to work anywhere that had an Internet connection. At the time, I was studying for a master degree in physics. While studying, I came up with a list of my interests and skills and began researching into a way to do these anywhere. If I could make money from it and if I could do it online, then it was something worth going after.
I created a writing file that would help me to find free writing jobs. I researched English and physics teaching online, and built travel websites to earn income through sales and advertising. Most of these failed, but I didn't give up.
The work I do has changed over the years and it's still changing now. Now, I pay my traveling through several different things. I'm the Student Travel Expert for About.com, and a senior writer for Too Many Adapters, a travel technology website. In addition, I will have my first book published this summer. I also offer a travel planning service to help readers prepare for their travels abroad.
To reach this point, where I can cover my expenses and travel full-time, took many, many years of hard work. For me, the freedom makes it worth it. With everything set in place, finally my dreams came true.

In 1845, a deadly disease struck the farms of Ireland, killing all the Lumper potato plants. In another place or time, the death of a single crop species might not have been so important. But in Ireland, in 1845, people depended almost on the potato for food. The death of one species caused a terrible famine. Now, some scientists are worried that such a famine could happen again.
Over the centuries, farmers have discovered thousands of different species of food crops. Some can be grown in very hot or cold climates. Others are not affected by certain diseases. However, you won't find many of these species in your local supermarket. To feed the seven billion people on Earth, most farmers today are growing only species of plants that are easy to produce in large numbers. Meanwhile, thousands of other species are becoming extinct.
For example, in the Philippines, there were once thousands of varieties of rice; now fewer than 100 are grown there. Experts believe that over the past century, we have allowed more than half of the world's food varieties to disappear.
One solution to this problem is to collect and store the seeds(种子)of as many different plant varieties as we can before they disappear. The idea was first suggested by Russian scientist Nikolay Vavilov. In the 1920s and 30s, he collected around 400,000 seeds. More recently, others are continuing the work he began.
In the U. S. state of Iowa, Diane Ott Whealy wanted to protect historic plant varieties. She started a place called Heritage Farm, where people can store and trade seeds.
More importantly, the people at Heritage Farm don't just store the seeds; they plant them. By doing this, they are reintroducing foods into the marketplace that haven't been grown for years. These food species are not just special in flavor. They also offer farmers food solutions for the future, fro m the past.
28.What can we infer from the first paragraph
A.A famine will surely happen again for the death of one species in the future.
B.Potatoes were the principal food in Ireland in the middle of 19th century.
C.People in Ireland liked potatoes more than any other food in the 19th century.
D.Scientists are worried that a deadly disease will affect the potato again in Ireland.
29.Why are many food species disappearing according to the passage
A.Because deadly diseases strike farms again and again.
B.Because farmers destroy the environment.
C.Because farmers mainly grow high-yield crops.
D.Because the seeds of some crops are difficult to get.
30.How do people at Heritage Farm prevent the food species becoming extinct
A.By storing and planting their seeds.
B.By fighting against the deadly disease.
C.By protecting the environment.
D.By forcing farmers to grow them.
31.What does the passage mainly talk about
A.The importance of protecting the food species.
B.A deadly disease struck the farms of Ireland.
C.Farmers are doing their best to stop the species from disappearing.
D.Why many food species are disappearing and how to save them.
D
Laughter is part of the universal human vocabulary. All members of the human species understand it. Unlike English or French or Swahili, we don’t have to learn to speak it. We re born with the capacity to laugh.
Very little is known about the specific brain mechanisms responsible for laughter. Contrary to folk wisdom, most laughter is not about humor; it is about relationships. To find out when and why people laugh, I went with several assistants to local malls and recorded what happened just before people laughed. Over a 10-year period, we studied over 2,000 cases of naturally occurring laughter.
We found that most laughter does not necessarily follow jokes. People may laugh after a variety of statements, such as, “Here comes Mary,” “How did you do on the test ” or “Do you have a rubber band ” These certainly aren’t jokes.
We believe laughter evolved from the panting (喘气的) behavior of our ancient ancestors. Today, if we tickle (使发痒) chimps, they don’t laugh. But, instead, they produce a panting sound. That’s the sound of ape laughter, and it’s the root of human laughter.
Apes laugh in the kinds of situations that lead to human laughter, like games that involve chasing. Other animals produce sounds during play, but they are so different from laughter. Rats, for example, produce high sounds during play and when tickled, but these are very different in sound from human laughter.
Laughter is often positive, but it can be negative too. There’s a difference between “laughing with” and “laughing at”. People who laugh at others may be trying to drive them out of the group.
No one has actually counted how much people of different ages laugh, but young children probably laugh the most. At ages 5 and 6 we probably laugh more than at any other times. Adults laugh less than children, probably because they play less.
Work now underway will tell us more about the brain mechanisms behind laughter, how it has evolved, and why we’re so susceptible to tickling.
32.What was the purpose of the decade’s research
A.To prove that people laugh because of humour.
B.To find out the real reason for people s laughter.
C.To research people s different reaction on jokes.
D.To record conversations among shoppers in malls.
33.What can we learn from the text
A.People who play more tend to laugh more.
B.Apes produce high sounds when tickled.
C.Scientists know the brain mechanisms responsible for laughter well.
D.The situations in which apes laugh are very different from those in which humans laugh.
34.What does the underlined word “susceptible” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Sensitive. B.Flexible.
C.Addictive. D.Reliable.
35.Which of the following might be the best title for the text
A.The Impact of Laughter
B.The Meaning of Laughter
C.A Big Mystery: Why Do We Laugh
D.Laughter: The Most Beautiful Words
