The giant panda is now in danger, and it will die out if the forests of bamboo continue to disappear(消失). The giant panda is a symbol for China. The Chinese government is also taking action to protect it and killing a panda is crime. They live in scattered populations(分散居群) in the mountains of central China, mostly in Sichuan Province, but also in Gansu and Shanxi Provinces.
People outside of Eastern Asia did not know about the giant panda until 1869. The first “Westerner” to see a live panda was a German zoologist（动物学家） in 1916. In 1936, Ruth Harkness became the first Westerner to bring a live giant panda out of China. It was a baby panda named Su Lin. The baby panda was taken to live at the Brookfield（布鲁克菲尔德） Zoo in Chicago(芝加哥).
In the 1970s, China began showing giant pandas in zoos in the United States and Japan as a type of diplomacy（外交）. This happened until 1984, when China changed how this was done.
