牛津译林英语9A unit 7 阅读理解提优训练
There are many things we need to know, but we do not learn them at school. For example, if we want to use our money wisely, we need to shop carefully. We need to know how to compare(比较) the prices of things in different shops. We need to be able to compare the quality of different brands (品牌). We need to know how to make sensible choices when we shop.
Knowing how to make such choices is a “life skill”, and we need the skill if we want to lead a useful and happy life.
Some of these choices are small. For example, will I have an apple for lunch or a pear Will I take a bus to school today or will I walk Will I wear the red T- shirt or the blue one to go to the movie Other choices are more important. For example, will I eat healthy food for lunch or will I eat junk food Will I work hard on all my classes or will I work hard only in the classes I enjoy We make choices like these every day.
Making wrong choices can cause unhappiness. We have to realize that the choices we make can affect the rest of our life. And our choices can also affect other people. You might not think much about where your garbage goes. But now you might want to know. On July 1, Shanghai introduced a new garbage-sorting policy (垃圾分类政策). People there need to put different kinds of garbage into different bins. Other cities in China will do the same soon.
Four kinds of garbage in Shanghai
Why is garbage sorting a big problem It’s because there is too much garbage these days. It is bad for our soil, air and water. Actually we can make use of some garbage again. And first, we need to sort our garbage. For example, if you put an old battery (电池) into the “harmful waste ” bin, people can use it to make new batteries. But if you don’t, the battery will end up somewhere else. Then, it will pollute the environment .
Can’t factories sort garbage for us Yes, they can. But it takes many workers to do this and costs lots of money. If we all sort our own garbage, things will become much easier.
Garbage sorting and recycling around the world

Japan: A trash truck (垃圾车) comes to people’s doors to pick up their garbage. It plays music when it’s coming. There are eight or more kinds of garbage. If you sort any of them wrong, you will get a notice on your door.

The size and shape of your ears show your character more than any other part of the face. Other parts of the face change shapes as we get older, but ears do not change their shapes. They only change in size.
Reading people's character from their ears is a very old science. In the past people thought that a person's ears with color were dangerous. They also thought that the shape of the ears showed if a person was musical or not. Today, too many people believe that the size and shape of the ears help you know if a person is musical.
Ears are all different, and each different thing has a meaning. Next time you look at a person, see if his or her ears are large, medium-size(中等尺寸), or small. Look at the lobes(耳垂). Do they stick to the face Ears that are always red mean that a person may get angry easily. Ears that are always cold and nearly white color mean that a person has a nervous character.

It is possible to do many simple tricks with numbers. Here is one trick. It has seven steps. First, write down your house number. For example, if your address is 73 Lemon Street, you would write down 73. Next, double it. In other words9 multiply it by two. Then, add five to this doubled number. For example, if your address is 73 and you have doubled it, you will get 146. Then, if you added five, you'd get 151. So, to repeat the first three steps, Write down your house number, double it, and add five. Fourth, multiply this number by 50. In our example here, if you multiply 151 by 50, you'll get 7550. The fifth step is to add your age to this total. For example, if you're 26 years old, you should add 26 to this total. In our example here, the result would be 7550 plus 26, you'll get 7576. Sixth, you have to add the number of days in a year, which is 365. In our example here, 365 added to 7576 is 7941. The seventh and final step is this: subtract(减) 615 from the number that you have. In our example, 7941 minus(减) 615 is 7326.
The result here, 7-3-2-6, is the trick. The first part of the number is the address and the last part of the number is the age of the person. That is, 73 is the address that we started with, and 26 is the age that we used.
If you follow these seven steps with any address and the age of any person. You will get the same result.
( )4. According to(根据) the trick, what number can you get if you are 16 years old and your house number is 85
A.1685. B.8516. C.8165. D.1658.
( )5. How can your age number appear at the last part off the result
A. It’s really a trick.
B. By taking all the steps except Step 1 and Step 2.
C. By taking Step 6 and Step 7.
D. By taking all the steps.
( )6. What’s the secret of the trick
A. It’s impossible to know.
B. By taking Step 2 and Step 4, we get the formula(公式) : your address number× 2 × 50.
C. By taking all the steps except 1 and 2, we get the formula: 5 × 50 + your age number +365-615=your age number.
D. Both B and C.
New rules and behaviour standards (行为规范) for middle school students came out in March. Middle school is going to use a new way to decide who the top students are. The best students won’t only have high marks. They will also be kids who don't dye (染) their hair, smoke or drink. The following are some of the new rules.
Tell the truth. Have you ever copied someone else's work on an exam Don-t do it again! That’s not something an honest student should do. If you have played computer games for two hours in your room, don't tell your parents you have done homework.

Have you ever quarreled with your teammates when your basketball team lost Only working together can make your team stronger. Be friendly to the people you are with. Try to think of others, not only yourself.
Be open to new ideas. Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon Perhaps you'll discover Earth II someday. Don’t look down on new ideas. Everyone's ideas are important. You should welcome them, because new ideas make life better for everyone.
Protect yourself. Has someone ever taken money from one of your classmates Don’t let it happen to you. If you have to go home late, you should let your parents know.
Use the Internet carefully. The Internet can be very useful for your studies. But some things on the Internet aren't for kids, so try to look at Web pages that are good for you. You can use the Web for fun or homework. Can’t you find any good Web sites for children Here are some:

Mr. Knight was the manager of a hotel. One weekend all of the hotels in the city were full because there was a large meeting. On Friday night, three men came into the hotel and asked for rooms. Mr. King explained that because of the meeting, there were no rooms ready for use. The men were very unhappy because they had no place to stay at.
Mr. Knight wanted to help them. He remembered that Room 418, a very small room upstairs, was empty. He asked the men if they would share it. The three said they would. Mr. Knight said that the rent would be thirty dollars. Each man should only pay ten. The men agreed, paid the money and went up to the room.
Mr. Knight soon began to feel sorry. "Thirty dollars is too much for that small room," he thought. "I should give them a discount." He called his assistant over and said, "Here’s five dollars. Give it to the men in Room 418. I’ve asked them too much money for that small room.”
The assistant took the money. While he was on the way to Room 418, he started to think, "How can the three men divide five dollars I’ll give each of them only one dollar and keep two dollars for myself. The men will be happy enough to get anything back. I’ll take a little money and Mr. Knight will never know." So the assistant returned one dollar to each man.
Now the puzzle is: Each man had at first paid ten dollars. When each got one dollar back from the assistant, it means each man had actually paid only nine dollars. There were three men. $9 × 3 =$27. The assistant kept $2. So $27 + $2 = $29. Where is the missing dollar

When someone says "Well, I guess I'll have to go to face the music", it does not mean he is planning to go to a concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this or that, and why you did not do this or that. Sour music, indeed, but it has to be faced.
The phrase "to face the music" is familiar to every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old. Where did the expression come from
The first information comes from the American writer James Fenimore Cooper. He said -- in 1851-- that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on stage. After they got their cue to go on, they often said, "It's time to go to face the music." And that is exactly what they did face the orchestra(交响乐团) which was just below the stage.
An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be friendly or perhaps unfriendly, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out.
So, "to face the music" came to mean having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice.
The other explanation comes from the army. Men had to face inspection(检阅) by their leader. The soldiers worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment(装备) clean---
shiny enough to pass inspection Still, the men had to go out, and face the music of the band, as well as the inspection. What else could they do

We have known for a long time that flowers of different plants open and close at different time of day. This is so familiar that there seems to be no need to ask the reason for it. Yet no one really understands why flowers open and close like this at particular times. The process (过程) is not as simple as we might think, as recent experiments have shown. In one study, flowers were kept in constant (连续的) darkness. We might expect that the flowers, without any information about the time of day, did not open as they normally do. In fact, they continued to open at their usual time. This suggests that they have some mysterious (神秘的) way of knowing the time. Their sense of time does not depend on information from the outside world; it is, so to speak, inside them, a kind of "inner clock".
This discovery (发现) may not seem to be very important. However, it was later found that not just plants but also animals -including man -have this "inner clock" which controls the working of their bodies and influences (影响) their activities. Men, then, are also influenced by this mysterious power. Whether we wish it or not, it affects such things in our life as our need for sleep, our need for food.
In the past, this did not matter very much because people lived in natural condition. In the modern world, things are different; now there are spacemen, airplane pilots and, in ordinary life, a lot of people who have to work at night. It would be very useful, then, to know more about the "inner clock". Such ordinary things as flowers might help us understand more about ourselves.

( )1. When we grow up, _________ .
A. our ears will not change in size B. our ears will be the same size

Do more at school. Good students love animals and care for other people. April is Bird-Loving Month in our country. Is your school doing anything to celebrate You should join! That way, you can learn more about animals and how to protect them. When more people work together, it makes it more fun for everyone.

9.A recent experiment showed that.
A. different flowers open and close at different times of day
B. for their opening and closing, flowers do not need information from the outside world
C. flowers are influenced by weak light even when they are in a dark room
D. flowers can be used for telling the time
10.The "inner clock".
A. is an unimportant discovery B. is only found in animals

A. it might help us in some way
B. we do not yet understand plants and animals well enough
C. the number of spacemen and airplane pilots is fast increasing

12.Kept in constant darkness, flowers.
