History books tell us that the city of Rome was set up in 152 B.C. It’s a fact, however, that by 100 A.D., Rome was the centre of a big empire. It was from Syria in the east to Spain in the west, from Britain in the north to Africa in the south. All or part of 27 of today’s countries were included in the Roman Empire. All of their people were ruled by one government, that of Rome. All educated people spoke the same language, Latin. And one of the empire’s outposts was called Londinium. This unimportant town would later become London, England, and the centre of another empire.
The Roman Empire came to and end about 1,500 years ago. Yet in some ways it is still with us. Take the letters you are reading, for example, English, like many other languages, uses the Roman alphabet (字母) while also borrowing many words. The laws of many European countries are based on ancient Roman laws. Roman ruins are seen throughout Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. In some places, Roman roads and water courses are still in use. To this day, a European in North Africa is likely to be called “Roumi”-Roman. Even modern place names are often after Ancient Rome. Both Greece and Germany have the names given by the Romans rather than the names that their own people first called them.
1. The most northern part of the Roman Empire was ________.
A. Spain B. Britain C. Syria D. Africa
2. The main idea of Paragraph 2 is that Roman culture is ________.

3. In the days of the Empire, the Roman government was probably ________.
A. weak B. divided C. strong D. poor
4. What happened first
A. Londinium was an outpost.
B. The Roman Empire fell apart.
C. The city of Rome was founded.
D. London became the centre of an empire.
5. Which of the following is NOT true
A. In Europe people still use Roman names in some places.
B. Londinium became the centre of an empire after Roman Empire fell apart.
C. We may see some remaining parts of Roman Empire in North Africa.
D. In Europe 27 countries had the same laws.

二.阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
I was blind, but I was ashamed of it if it was known. I refused to use a white stick and hated asking for help. After all, I was a teenage girl, and I couldn’t bear people to look at me and think I was not like them. I must have been a terrible danger on the ing across me wandering through the traffic, motorists probably would have to step rapidly on their brakes. Apart from that, there were all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work.
One evening, I got off the bus about halfway home where I had to change buses, and as usual I ran into something,“I’m awfully sorry,”I said and stepped forward only to run into it again. When it happened a third time, I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost. This was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me. So I carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldn’t stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off. No one else was there and I had to try to guess if the bus had arrived.
Generally in this situation, because I hated showing I was blind by asking for help, I tried to guess at the sound. Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away. In the end, I usually managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help.
But on this particular evening no one joined me at the stop; It seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus. Of course I heard plenty of buses pass, or I thought I did. But because I had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, I let them all go by. I stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. Then I gave up. I decided to walk on to the next stop.
56. The girl refused to ask for help because she thought_________.
A. she might be recognized B. asking for help looked silly
C. she was normal and independent D. being found blind was embarrassing

58. At the request stop that evening, the girl___________.
A. stopped a big lorry B. stopped the wrong bus
C .made no attempt to stop the bus D. was not noticed by other people
59. What was the problem with guessing at the sound to stop a bus
A. Other vehicles also stopped there. B. It was unreliable for making judgments.
C. More lorries than buses responded to the girl.
D. It took too much time for the girl to catch the bus.
60. Finally the girl decided to walk to the next stop, hoping __________.
A. to find people there B. to find more buses there
C. to find the bus by herself there D. to find people more helpful there

After a discussion last week. “Do SCHOOL Libraries Need Books ” the comments from readers included some first-hand views from students. Below are excerpts (摘录)from their observations on how studying has changed and how they use libraries.
It makes little difference whether the books you are reading is electronic or paper. But if you want a place to read, a library is still the place to go. As a kid in school, I often avoid the study hall noises and go to the quiet school library. The library is a place. A learning place. Modern technology won’t change the library as long as things are learned.
——Scott
Being a student I am aware that many of us seldom look at the books in the library unless told to do so by a teacher as a requirement for an assignment. It takes time to find the very book you want at the library, and it may not be necessary to do so. More and more students, such as myself, use the internet for nearly every assignment. There are countless online resources for us to use with a click of the mouse. What’s more, books are very expensive and schools could put that money towards charities.
——Hayley H
I hope schools continue to have libraries. As a student, I know there is a difference between reading something on a screen and something printed. When I read something in a book that I do not understand or want to look further into. I record it and will research later or discuss with someone. With a screen (especially online) I will instantly access the information and look into the question at hand, which interrupts my reading and especially my imagination.
——Allie
To me, it depends on the purpose of the books. As a student, I prefer to do research online. Online research is faster and more efficient. But when I’m reading for pleasure, I absolutely refuse to give up a real book. The tactile sensation(触感)and freedom that real books give you really makes the reading experience more enjoyable. So my suggestion is that schools have more digital collections for research and scholarly work, and a good selection of interesting and age-appropriate fiction and nonfiction for pleasure reading.
——CM

We_all_feel_happy_to_have_you_as_our_new_English_teacher_and_we’re_glad_to_write_to_you_to_express_our_hope_about_your_class. Since it’s the first time for you to be our teacher,we would feel grateful if you speak slowly because many of us can’t quite follow you. Besides, when you explain important language points, would you please give us more examples and write some long and difficult sentences on the blackboard to make sure that all of us understand you?We also hope that you will repeat some difficult language points again and again so that we will grasp them completely. What’s more, although doing homework is a way to check if all of us can control the knowledge,we hope that there will be less homework. Last but not least,we hope to have more chances to stay with you,so please come to our classroom more often to become our teacher as well as our good friend. 21世纪教育网

As we all know, it was Thomas Jefferson who wrote the Declaration of Independence (《独立宣言》). He wrote it in two weeks, and after a few changes, it was accepted by the Congress (国会). As a result, he became famous.
Born in Virginia, Thomas Jefferson, a brilliant student at school and almost talented lawyer later, was much interested in politics.
Jefferson was elected the Governor of Virginia in 1779, and he was sent to France as the representative of the American government in 1784. Sixteen years later, at the age of 57, he was elected president after Washington and Adams.
Far from a handsome man, he was tall with long arms and big hands. Jefferson, who was an amusing talker in conversation but a poor speaker, was generally good-natured.
Jefferson was regarded as a defender of freedom in America. As a president, he protected the right of free speech. Interestingly enough, in his eight years as president, Jefferson never vetoed (否决) a bill which the Congress had passed. He did a lot in organizing the new University of Virginia.
Thomas Jefferson died on July the fourth, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of American Independence.

Make the benefits most, reduce the drawbacks least
Hosting the Olympics successfully is, perhaps, the greatest glory for a city. However, before transforming the dream into reality, the benefits and drawbacks of hosting the Olympics should be considered carefully.
Hosting the Olympics surely would bring about much gain to a city. Boom of the local economy, more jobs, and the possibility of generating income all sound extremely attractive to the municipal government. At the same time, better infrastructure (基础设施), cleaner environment, enjoying the wonderful game with hundreds of sports elites (精英) and entertainment stars, and the opportunity of contacting people from all over the world also seem exciting to the citizens. Besides, the hosting will definitely promote the patriotic emotion and pride, as well as the moral behavior in local people. In most cases, hosting the Olympics is well supported by both the public and the central government.
But this is not the entire view of the pretty picture. If we look from another angle, the Olympic hosting might bring about some side-effects to a city.
First, the environmental impacts, including the increasing exhaust smoke of cars, more pressure on water resources, huge amount of wasted leaflets and other materials used for public activities, are most probably neglected. In order to broaden the streets, some trees may have to be cut. Near the construction site, the tiny dust may float in the air for a long time. Reduction of farmland may be caused by the need of setting up new sports centre or accommodation facilities. These environmental consequences can be especially serious in a resource-limited and thickly-populated city in a third-world country. Second, if talking about the economic benefit, it should not be forgotten that a quick increase may lead to bubble (泡沫) growth, which may easily crash. If not well managed and organized, the big event may not be so profitable, and the new facilities may be forever empty after the games. Yes, there have been cases that host cities ended up with enormous debts.
No one stops eating merely because too much food might hurt his stomach and make him ill. Since we have bid for it, what we can do is to make the benefits most and reduce the drawbacks least.
