I.语言点精讲
1.If people have problems, they should keep them to themselves.
如果人们有问题,他们应该把这些问题留给自己。
keep...to oneself 保守秘密, 把问题/烦恼埋在心底
例:我们应该为他们的忧虑保守秘密。
We should keep their worries to ourselves.
themselves为反身代词,意为“他们/她们/它们自己”。反身代词常用作动词的宾语,表示动作的承受着为主语本身。
I promise to keep it to myself. 我承诺保守秘密。
2.Sometimes they have problems with their schoolwork, and sometimes with their friends.
have problems with… 在……方面遇到问题,相当于have trouble with/difficulty in sth.
例:一些老年人不适应城市的生活。
Some old people have some problems with the life in the city.
Some students may have problems/trouble/difficulty with English learning.
have problems/trouble/difficulty(in) doing sth. 意为“做某事有困难”。
Some students have problems/trouble/difficulty making friends.
3.She was afraid to tell her parents about it.
be afraid to do sth. 害怕做某事
be afraid of sb./sth. 害怕某人或某物;
be afraid of doing sth. 害怕或担心发生某种(意外) 情况而不敢做某事;
be afraid + that 从句,意为“担心……”。
例:不要害怕提出问题!
Don’t be afraid to ask questions!
Her dad said he sometimes made careless mistakes himself.
mistake后可接介词短语、动词不定式、现在分词作定语。接about表示“关于……的错误”,接in表示“某方面的错误”。
make a mistake/make mistakes 犯错误 by mistake 错误地无意中;
例:你在作文中犯了几处语法错误。
You’ve made several grammatical mistakes in the composition.
Sally is such a careful girl that she seldom makes spelling mistakes.
I’m sorry I took your dictionary by mistake.
Robert Hunt advises students about common problems.
罗伯特·亨特就一些常见的问题给学生们提出建议。
advise 意为“劝告,建议”。
①advise sb. about/on 关于……给某人忠告/建议
The teachers advise students about study. 就学习问题老师给学生们提出建议。
②advise sb.(not)to do sth. 建议某人(不)做某事
例:他就餐桌礼仪给那个小孩提了些建议。
He advised the child about table manners.
布朗夫人劝告我们吃健康食品。
Mrs. Brown advises us to eat healthy food.
Our teacher advised us to make weekly plans.老师建议我们制定周计划。
③advise doing sth. 劝告/建议做某事
I advised buying your tickets as early as possible.我建议你尽快买票。

My grandma advised that I shouldn’t read for a long time.我奶奶建议我不应长时间读书。
6.It is best not to run away from our problems.
It is best (not) to do sth. “最好(不要)做某事”。其中it是形式主语,真正的主语是后面的动词不定式。相当于You’d better (not)do sth.。
例:最好每天说英语。
It is best to speak English every day.
7.In English, we say that sharing a problem is like cutting it in half.
cut…in half 把……切成两半;把……一切为二
例:请把这个橙子切成两半。
Please cut the orange in half.
Put the two pieces of bread together and cut in half to make a sandwich .
两片面包合上,切成两半做三明治。
share v. 分享;分担;共同负担;
share sth. with sb. 与某人分享某物
1) Lucy shares a room with Lily. 露西和莉莉住在同一个房间。
2) Can I share this book with you
我可以和你一起看这本书吗?
8.Unless we talk to someone, we’ll certainly feel worse. 我们如果不与人聊聊,肯定会感觉更糟。
unless 意为“除非,如果不”,引导条件状语从句,相当于if... not...
Unless he invites me, I won’t go to this party.
= If he doesn’t invite me, I won’t go to this party. 如果他不邀请我,我将不去参加他的聚会。
注意:当主句用一般将来时或是祈使句时,unless引导的从句常用一般现在时。
There will be more pollution unless people drive less. 如果人们不少开车,将会有更多的
污染。
Don’t pour the water into the river unless you make sure it is clean enough. 不要把水倒进河里,除非你们保证它足够干净。
You will miss the bus unless you hurry up.
你要不快点就错过班车了。
We can’t be successful unless we keep working hard.
我们不会取得成功,除非我们持续努力工作。
She just kept thinking, “If I tell my parents, …”
她一直在想: “如果我告诉我父母……”
keep doing sth 意为“一直……”
1) It kept raining for a week. 雨一直下了一周。
Just keep singing, and don't stop. 接着唱,不要停下来。
10.So you’re halfway to solving a problem just by talking to someone about it!
因此,你只要跟人聊聊这个问题,你就已经解决了问题的一半。
be halfway to… (to是介词) 完成了或做了事情的一部分
1) We’re still only halfway to finishing the job.
我们才仅仅完成了工作的一部分。
2) I'm afraid we are only halfway to the mountain.
恐怕我们只走了去山上一半的路。

Nirmal Purja has set several world records after climbing the world's 14 highest mountains in less than seven months.
