A Teaching Plan for Unit 5 Theme Parks
The 2nd period of Intensive Reading
Important teaching points
Help students to understand the difference between parks and theme parks;
Enable students to know about different theme parks and its feature and culture they represent;

Step 1. Lead-in (5 mintues)
Begin the class by greeting students as usual. Show students pictures of two famous parks in China: Beihai Park and Happy Valley. Ask students what they have known about the two parks and compare their differences. Then introduce the concept of Theme Parks to students and lead students to have a fast-reading of the passage we are going to learn today.
Step 2. Skimming (10 minutes)
Task 1 (4 mintues):
What is the main idea of this passage
T: After the fast-reading, you must have a first-impression of the
passage, now please answer the question on the screen.
Invite one student to summarize the main idea. Students should be able to answer The passage introduced three different theme parks.
What are the names of these theme parks
Students will need to have a quick look at the passage again and find Disneyland, Dollywood and Camelot Park. Check the answer and show pictures and names of the three theme parks on the screen.
Task 2. (6 mintues)
Divide students into three different groups and ask them to fill-in a form shown on the screen. Each group need to find the name, location and feature of a theme park. Then ask a representative from each group to check the answer together.

Step 3. Scanning (15 mintues)
Task 1. (7 mintues)
Exercise 2
Ask students in three different groups to scan the three parpagraphs and find out details about each theme park, like what they can do in this theme park. Then students will need to finish the exercise 2, write down the activities they find and fill-in the form. They can discuss with their group members and check the answer together.
Task 2. (8 mintues)
Exercise 3
Pick up students randomly to finish the exercise 3, and it will show if the have fully understood the passage or not.
Exercise 4
Finish the exercise 4 by group discussion. This time, students will read the passage last time and rotate their reading part. Group1 will read Camelot Park, Group2 will read Disneyland and Group 3 will read Dollywood. Ask group members from each group to answer the Q1-3 and invite one student to answer Q4.
Step 4 Discussion and presentation (7 mintues)
Task 1. (4 mintues)
Design your own theme park
Show student pictures of some other famous theme parks in the world and ask the question: If you are the designer of a theme park, what kind of theme park you want to design and why Leave the question to the groups and each group is required to draw the picture and write the description of their theme park and present their work on the stage.
Voting time
Ask all of the students to vote for the theme parks they want to visit and choose some students to explain their reasons. Group winner will get a postcard about Disneyland.
Homework (3 mintues)
Students should write a summary of the passage and preview the language points for next class.
Teaching reflections
The content of this passage is very amusing for Senior 2 students. Activities should be designed to arouse their curiosity and participation. In the skimming and scanning part, students will need to read the passage at least three times to catch the main idea and details, which help them to understand the whole passage. And in discussion part, they will promote the sense of cooperation at most and share much information about the passage.
