Iceland is Europe's westemmost country, with the world's most northerly capital city. Reykjavik. Iceland has a
population of about 340,000, spreading over more than 100,000 square kilometers. Despite its small size, there are
many reasons to visit this amazing country.
City of Culture
Most visitors' first destination is Reykjavik, a small and clean city known for its colorful and stylish
buildings. The city's downtown area is lined with shops, art galleries, cafes and bookstores. In 2000, Reykjavik
was awarded the title of Europe's City of Culture, thanks to its art museums for true art lovers.
Hot Springs
Iceland has a number of hot springs around the island. All are heated naturally by underground volcanic
activity. In fact, this energy is tumed into electricity, which powers and heats people's homes and businesses. As a
result, Iceland burns very little fossil fuel, such as oil and gas. Iceland has some of the cleanest air in the world.
Caves and Monsters
In Iceland, one of the most popular outdoor activities to enjoy is caving. Exploring Iceland's special lava
caves or ice caves is challenging and requires special clothes and hiking tools. The best-known ice caves are in
Vatnaj kull, which, at 8,000 square kilometers, is Europe's largest ice cave. Outside the town of Reykjavik, the
huge rocks were once believed to be monsters. These are dramatic scenery on a magnificent black-sand beach.
The Golden Circle
No trip to Ieeland would be complete without a visit to the Golden Circle, which connects Gullfoss, the hot
springs region of Geysir, and Thingvellir National Park. The Mid-Atlantic Fault that runs through Iceland is
literally pulling the island apart. No place is more obvious than Thingvellir Valley, where the land is actually
separating and the stony ground frequently changes.

“Have you checked the oil in the car ” my father used to say to me, his version of “Hello, hope you are
well.” Sometimes our phone calls would begin with an inquiry about the oil and end with an inquiry about the oil,
with not a lot in between.
Fathers have a lot of love to give, but it’s often supplied through the medium of practical advice. The
affectionate phrase “You made my life better from the moment you were born” may be rarely heard, but there is
the more common “I’ll hold the ladder while you get the leaves off the roof.”
Why can’t we fathers just say “I love you” or “It’s great to see you” The point is: That’ s exactly what we
are saying. You just have to translate from the language that is Fatherlish. Listen closely enough and the phrase “I
love you” can be heard in the lengthier “I could come around Saturday and replace the silicon seal around the base
of your toilet because I reckon that thing is getting really smelly.”
When I was 17, I went on my first road trip. My father stood on the corner in the predawn of a cold morning
to bid us farewell. “Highways are dangerous,” he said, “so don’t try overtaking anything faster than a horse and
buggy. And take a break every two hours. And every time you stop for gas, you really should check the oil.” At
the time we thought his speech was funny and would chant “horse-and-buggy” every time I floored the
accelerator.
Dad’s long gone now. But after all these years, I realize that had I owned a copy of the Fatherlish-to-English
dictionary, I’d have understood that the speech my friend and I so casually mocked was simply Dad’s attempt at
affection.
4.According to the passage, how do fathers usually show their affection
A.By inquiring their kids’ car. B.By doing rather than saying.
C.By offering helpful advice. D.By accompanying their kids.
5.Why does the author mention his first road trip
A.To exemplify the unique parental concern.
B.To provide some background knowledge.
C.To explain the reasons for my mocking.
D.To present my father’s funny speech.
6.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.My father has gone somewhere faraway.
B.I regretted making fun of my father’s speech.
C.I owned a copy of Fatherlish-to-English dictionary.
D.My father’s speech got across to me when I was 17.
7.Which words can best describe the author’s father
A.Caring and considerate. B.Devoted and generous.
C.Talkative and humorous. D.Knowledgeable and diligent.
C
Apart from psychological illness, we are all largely responsible for our own emotional health. What we say
to ourselves over and over for days, weeks, months, and sometimes years, has a great effect on how we see
ourselves. This also contributes to many mental health disorders.
Many of us have problems with negative thoughts playing on the channel of our minds, but if you’re buried
in them and believe them, they could be wearing your sense of self-esteem. Here are a few beliefs that indicate
you may need to switch the channel: I’m not good enough / I don’t deserve.. /No one likes me /I’m a failure
Negative thoughts remind you of your bad feelings and they bring your focus on your failures, and they get
you nowhere.
What can you do Here are some suggestions:
Switch the channel when negative thoughts appear. Self-talk is not so obvious that we often don’t notice its
effect on our mood and belief systems. Key things to notice are “if only” or “what if” statements: the former keeps
you caught in the past with regret, while the latter keeps you fearful of the future. There is nothing you can do
about the past, and the future isn’t here yet, so stay in the present moment.
Recognize that actions always follow beliefs. You’ll find yourself behaving in ways that are consistent to
your beliefs. So, start believing the best about yourself, act as if you believe that you're a valuable and worthy
person.
Develop positive self-talk rather than negative self-talk. Instead of always looking down upon yourself in
your head, think of some things you actually like about yourself. What are your strengths What are you
good at Instead of saying “I’m a loser”, try saying, “I am capable./I’m good at../I accept myself the way I am.”
Thinking poorly about ourselves gets us nowhere and is extremely self-limiting. Decide today to turn off the
negative self-talk channel in your mind and develop your true potential.
8.The underlined word “wearing” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to________.
A.strengthening
B.protecting
C.weakening
D.replacing
9.What do the suggestions in the text tell us
A.Our beliefs always come after actions.
B.Positive self-talk does good to our mental health.
C.Looking down upon ourselves is a sign of modesty.
D.“What if” keeps you stuck in the past with regret.
10.The text encourages us to ________.
A.get rid of negative thoughts
B.get anywhere we like
C.think highly of others
D.turn off the self-talk channel
11.This text is most likely to appear in ________.
A.a recreation guide
B.a medical journal
C.a science textbook
D.a travel brochure
D
People say money doesn’t buy happiness, but how much money you make can affect the way you experience
it
While it’s true that money can’t buy happiness, having money has certain benefits. For example, money can
buy you time to do things that make you happier, and giving away some of your money can make you happier as
well. Now scientists from the University of California at Irvine have found that how much money you make may
impact (影响) how you experience happiness; higher earners are more likely to experience positive emotions
focused on themselves, while lower earners are more likely to experience positive emotions focused on
connecting with other people.
Scientists used data from an existing survey of 1,519 U.S. adults between the ages of 24 to 93, to be
representative of the entire U.S. population. From the survey, scientist collected the household income of each
person and analyzed how each person experienced the seven emotions that are believed to cause happiness:
amusement, admiration, compassion, satisfaction, enthusiasm, love, and pride.
What they found was that higher earners were associated with the happiness-related emotions of satisfaction,
pride, and amusement, all of which are self-focused in nature. Lower earners were associated with more other-
oriented (他人指向) happiness-related emotions: compassion, love, and admiration. There were no differences
observed with enthusiasm.
As to reasons for the difference, the researchers suppose that while pride and satisfaction may reflect upper
class individuals’ desire for independence, increased love and compassion may help lower class individuals form
more harmonious (和谐的), interdependent bonds to help deal with their more threatening environments. In other
words, the researchers are not saying that one way of getting happiness is better than another, but rather that the
way one obtains happiness may be a product of existing and coping within one’s particular circumstances.
12.What do higher earners prefer to do
A.Long to connect with others.
B.Spend more money on the poor.
C.Buy things to make them happier.
D.Pay more attention to themselves.
13.Why did the scientists study the seven emotions
A.They can make people happy.
B.They can be bought with money.
C.They are the most common feelings.
D.They are results of an existing survey.
14.Which emotions do lower-income people have based on the study
A.Pride and satisfaction.
B.Enthusiasm and amusement.
C.Admiration and compassion.
D.Compassion and satisfaction.
15.What can be inferred from people with different incomes
A.Those with lower income live a hard life.
B.They have different ways to get happiness.
C.Richer ones are happier than poorer ones.
D.Their happiness has nothing to do with money.

school today, mom” With a wave of my hand, I sent him off. And then I turned my back so he couldn’t see the
tears in my eyes.
I was in low spirits all day, washing and drying clothes, and thinking how love had disappeared from my life.
As hanging up the last of my husband’s shirts, I looked at the clock—4:30. Jonathan’s class ended at 3:15. It was
late and I hurriedly drove to the school.
I was out of breath by the time I knocked on the teacher’s door. I peered through the glass. She opened the
door and let me in.
“I want to talk to you about Jonathan,” she said. I prepared myself for the worst. Nothing would have
surprised me. “Did you know Jonathan brought flowers to school today ” she asked. I nodded, thinking about my
favorite bush and trying to hide the hurt in my eyes.
“Let me tell you what happened yesterday,” the teacher continued. “See that little girl ” I saw a bright-eyed
child laugh and point to a colorful picture taped to the wall. “Well, yesterday she was almost crazy. Her mother
and father are going through a divorce. She told me she didn’t want to live. She wished she could die. I did all I
could to comfort her, but it only seemed to make matters worse.”
“Today I watched your son walk to that child and hand her some pretty pink flowers, whispering something.”

natural sounds,下文是对 natural sounds 的具体化。B 项符合语意。故选 B 项。
19.根据上文“Electrical music is also instrumental music, but it is different from classical. Classical is Sufi
music. On the other hand, this music is produced with the help of new digital instruments and devices. (电子音乐
也是器乐,但它不同于古典音乐。古典音乐是苏菲派音乐。另一方面,这种音乐是在新的数字乐器和设
备的帮助下产生的。)”可知,上文阐述了电子音乐的与古典音乐不同之处,A 项“This music has no or
fewer lyrics. (这首音乐没有歌词或歌词更少)”,以及下文“Mostly, it is composed of beats or instrumental
sounds.
故选 A 项。
20.根据上文“These mentioned sounds are those few that help the people to rebuild their concentration. (以上提
到的几个声音都能帮助人们重新集中注意力。) ”可知,此处为对上面各种能助人集中注意力的音乐的总
结;E 项“The selection of music varies from person to person. (音乐的选择因人而异。)”承接上文;下文
“Some introverts like slow and rhythmic music while some like sounds with lyrics (歌词). Hence, it depends on
the mental ability and nature of the people.

Dear Jackson,
How’s everything I am Li Hua, a student who attended the lecture you delivered last Friday. I’m writing to
tell you how much I learned from it and convey my gratitude.
Your lecture on “How to build up healthy interpersonal relationship” featured solutions to problems students
face every day with each other.I learned that maintaining positive relationships requires mutual understanding,
respect and trust. I applied this knowledge to resolving a quarrel with my roommate who had ignored me for a
week. In your next lecture I am expecting to learn more about being on good terms with family members.
Once again, thank you for your enlightening/instructive/helpful lecture, and hopefully I will see you in the
near future!
Yours sincerely,

47.I knew at once what had happened and felt my heart swell with pride. I smiled at the teacher. “Thank you,” I
said, reaching for Jonathan’s hand, “You’ve made my day.” While driving back home, I still recalled the love
Jonathan showed the little girl and realized that it was what I needed to show my family members. Therefore,
when my husband came back home, I snapped a small limb bristling with hot pink azaleas off the bush. I handed
him the flowers. “I love you,” I said.
In the evening, my husband and I sat in the sitting room, talking about the bush. We used to love azaleas
because they were beautiful, but on that day we knew that they could also bring hope and love to others. We
decided to plant more azaleas. At this moment, Jonathan came up behind us, apologizing for pulling up our
favorite azalea. With tears in my eyes, I hold him in my arms. “You did the right thing, my son,” I said. “We are
proud of you.”
