When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary.
When troubles come and my heart burdened be.
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence.
Until you come and sit a while with me.
You raise me up,
so I can stand on
the mountains.
You raise me
up,to walk on
stormy seas.
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up… to more than I can be.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains.
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas.
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders.
You raise me up… to more than I can be.

It's been a long day without you my friend.
And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again.
We've come a long way from where we began.
Oh I'll tell you all about it when I see you again.
没有老友你的陪伴,日子真是漫长,
与你重逢之时,我会敞开心扉倾诉所有。
回头凝望, 我们携手走过漫长的旅程,
与你重逢之时 我会敞开心扉倾诉所有。

O.Henry, a famous American writer of short stories, was born in North Carolina in 1862. O. Henry was a pen name. His real name was William Sydney Porter. When he was a young boy, he did not go to school for long because of being born in a poor family, but he tried to teach himself everything he needed to know.
When he was about 20 years old, O. Henry went to Texas. There he tried different jobs. He first worked on a newspaper, and then had a job in a bank. But he got himself into some trouble. Some money went missing from the bank. O. Henry was believed to have stolen it, so he was sent to prison.

will to live, a young girl decides that
she will die when the last leaf drops
from a dying vine(葡萄藤) outside her window. Her neighbor, an elderly artist frustrated by his inability to paint what is in his heart, follows the example of the Savior(救世主) and makes the ultimate sacrifice to save her life. In doing so, he creates the masterpiece he has been struggling to paint.
THE COP AND THE ANTHEM
Winter was coming, and Soapy, one of the many thousands of New York pickpockets, felt uneasy. He knew that the time had come for him to look for shelter. Soapy's desires were not great. Three months in prison was what he wanted. There he was sure of a little food and a bed, safe from the winter wind and the cold.
For years prison had been his shelter during the winter. Now the time had come again.
Having decided to go to prison, Soapy at once set about fulfilling his desire. There were many ways of doing this. The pleasantest was to get a good meal at some expensive restaurant, and then, after saying that he could not pay, be quietly arrested by a policeman and sent to prison by the judge.
Soapy walked along Broadway looking at the expensive goods in the fashionable shops. He stopped at the window of a brightly-lit café. Soapy was freshly shaven, and his coat and tie were decent. But his boots and trousers were shabby. "If I can reach a table in the restaurant unsuspected," he thought, "everything will be all right. The upper part of me that will show above the table will cause no suspicion in the waiter's mind. A roast duck, a bottle of wine, a cup of coffee and a cigar will make me happy on the journey to my winter quarters." But just as Soapy entered the restaurant, the head waiter's eye fell on his shabby trousers and boots. Strong hands turned him round and pushed him on to the sidewalk.
Soapy turned off Broadway. He had to think of another way of getting into prison. At a corner of Sixth Avenue he saw a brightly-lit shop window. Soapy picked up a cobble-stone and dashed it through the glass. People came running round the corner, a policeman at their head. Soapy stood still with his hands in his pockets, and smiled at the sight of brass buttons.
"Where is the man who did that " shouted the policeman.
"Don't you think I did it " said Soapy in a friendly way.
The policeman did not understand Soapy's hint. Men who break windows do not usually remain to speak to a policeman. They run away. Just then the policeman saw a man hurrying to catch a bus. Club in hand, he rushed after that man. Soapy had failed again.
On the opposite side of the street was a small cheap restaurant. Soapy entered it, sat down at a table and ate a beefsteak and an enormous apple-pie.
"Now call a cop, I cannot pay. I have no money," said Soapy. "And don't keep a gentleman waiting."
"No cop for you," said the waiter, and seizing Soapy by the collar he threw him out of the restaurant. Soapy picked himself up and beat the dust from his clothes. Arrest seemed but a rosy dream. Prison seemed very far away. A policeman who stood before a drugstore two doors away laughed and walked down the street.
He was just passing a cigar store, when he saw a well-dressed man go in, leaving his silk umbrella at the entrance. Soapy stepped in, took the umbrella, and slowly continued his way. The man saw him. He turned and followed hastily.
"My umbrella!" he said sternly(严肃地).
"Oh, is it " said Soapy. "Well, why don't you call a policeman I took it. Your umbrella! Why don't you call a cop There is one standing at the corner."
The owner of the umbrella slowed his steps. Soapy did the same. The policeman looked at the two curiously.
"Of course," said the umbrella-man ― "that is ― well, you know how these mistakes occur ― I ― if it's your umbrella I hope you'll excuse me ― I picked it up this morning in a restaurant — If you recognize it as yours, why ― I hope you'll ―"
The man retreated. Soapy walked on, muttering insults against policemen who would not arrest him.
At last he reached a street where there was little traffic and few pedestrians. At a quiet corner he suddenly stopped. There was an old church in front of him. Through the windows a soft light shone, and the sweet music of the Sabbath(安息日) anthem made him approach the iron fence.
The moon was above, cold and beautiful, and the music reminded Soapy of those days when his life contained such things as mothers and roses and clean thoughts and collars. Soapy listened to the music, looked at the moon and murmured to himself: "There is time yet. I will reform. I will become an honest man. I will get out of the mire(泥潭). I will ―"
Soapy felt a hand laid on his arm. He looked quickly round into the broad face of a policeman.
"What are you doing here " asked the policeman.
"Nothing," said Soapy.
"Then come along," said the policeman. "Thinking of robbing the church, eh "
"Three months' imprisonment," said the judge in the police court the next morning.
O. Henry – style endings
O. Henry’s stories are best known for their twists or surprise endings. So much so that people now refer to such endings as “O. Henry endings”. In these endings, there will be a sudden twist that results in an unexpected change of the characters’ inner world, experience, destiny, etc, thus creating an unexpected yet understandable result. Such endings will make the story more appealing and dramatic, as well as more memorable for its readers.

the development of the story
1. Did Jimmy come to meet his friend
When the policeman went away, Jimmy came back and told the man that he was Jimmy Wells. He saw the scar on Bob’s face and knew he was the person who was wanted in Chicago. They just talked a little and then they left separately.
2. What has Jimmy experienced over the past twenty years
He may continue to be in New York and have a steady job.
3. What might happen between the policeman and the man
After seeing the scar on the man’s face, the policeman was confident that the man was the criminal of whom the policeman was in chase. Immediately, he grasped the man’s arms and fought with him. Unfortunately, the man ran away and escaped again. Of course, he didn’t see his friend Jimmy at all.
1. What does the note tell you about the ending of the story
2. How do you think Bob would react when he read the note
Jimmy was the policeman. He turned up as they agreed twenty years earlier, but he decided to fulfil his duty and have Bob arrested.
Bob would be very sad and angry when he read the note because Jimmy was his best friend and he trusted him deeply but Jimmy made him arrested. Or Bob would feel sort of comfortable because he might think that Jimmy had a good sense of duty and was just and fair. In some ways, he didn’t have to hide himself restlessly in his later life.
