21.(6 分)Known as GC-1, the drug reportedly speeds up metabolism(新陈代谢), or burning off, of fat cells. “GC-1 dramatically increases the metabolic rate, essentially transforming white fat, which stores extra calories and is associated with obesity and metabolic disease, into a fat like calorie-burning brown fat,” said Kevin Phillips, a researcher in Houston.
Until several years ago, scientists thought that only animals and human babies have energy-burning, "good" brown fat. “It is now clear,” Phillips said, “that human adults do have brown fat, but appear to lose its calorie-burning activity over time.” White fat has a bad effect on people when the body has too much of it. Some published research shows that
people who have more brown fat have a reduced riskof obesity. Researchers are now working on ways to “brown”
white fat, or change it into brown fat.
GC-1 works, according to Phillips. He said he and other researchers have tested the drug in hundreds of mice.
Obese mice, both genetically obese and those with diet-induced obesity, received GC-1 treatment daily. Genetically obese mice lost weight and more than 50 percent of their fat mass in approximately two weeks, Phillips reported. He said mice with diet-induced obesity experienced similar improvements. The drug also caused adaptive thermogenes(适应性发热) in fat cells from mice. Cells grown in a dish, as well as tissue samples taken from obese mice, showed evidence of
white-fat browning. “Our data prove that GC-1 is a novel fat-browning agent that may have use in the treatment of
obesity and metabolic disease,”Phillips said.
The drug has not yet been tested for weight loss in humans. However, Phillips said it wouldn’t be long before it was
used as a way of losing weight.

brown fat may lose its activity over time 3、What can we know about GC-1

line from a heartfelt poem Feng Duan wrote to his fiancee Chen Lianfang in 1955.
Feng is now 94 and Chen 90, and they have been married for more than half a century. Feng, an academic at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, may not be a professional poet but for 64 years, Feng has written countless love poems to his wife. On every important anniversary or festival, Feng would send a poem to Chen. In 1978, when Chen’s cancer surgery succeeded, Feng created more than ten poems to celebrate his wife’s recovery. Chen used a red suitcase to store these love poems. The academic has also translated many English, French and German poems into classical Chinese.
The couple was introduced to each other by a common friend in 1953 and Feng sent two paper copies of poems to Chen as a gift.
“As long as I think of you, a beam of sunshine lights up my heart,” Feng wrote.
Chen recalled the first time Feng invited her to his dormitory to have a cup of tea and she thought the cup was made of frosted glass. As the two became closer, Chen often visited the academic’s dorm. She realized that the cup was the only one poor Feng owned. The opaque (不透明的) cup was not frosted glass but common glass stained with toothpaste.
Later she bought many clothes and even a stove for Feng, making a nice change from the single man s life. Feng’s

23.(8 分)You may think that the story of Pygmalion《(
卖花女》, 1913)---in which people are judged by the way they
talk --- is something that only existed in the days of British high society. But thanks to etiquette (礼 仪 ) expert and author William Hanson, we realize that little has changed during the past 100 years.
In a BBC radio program, Hanson released a list of common words used in British English that could reveal
whether a person is “common” or “fashionable”.
And yet here comes the interesting part: While some of us might go through life using fancy words, dressing in ways that make us appear more well-off than we really are, there are wealthy people in the world who try to hide their riches because they want to be seen as “normal” instead of “showy”.
Beatrice, for example, is a New Yorker who inherited (继承) millions of dollars. She told The New York Times that
she has a habit of removing the price tags from her clothes so her house staff don’t see them and feel uncomfortable. “We don’t want that ‘Wow’.” said Scott, also a New Yorker, who had just inherited over $50 million. “We’re just
not the type of people who wear it on our sleeve.”

People meet impolite persons frequently.
People tend to use more polite words.
People judge others by their way of talking. 2、What do rich people prefer to do
To earn more money.
To hide their riches.
To think highly of their wealth.
To judge others by their wealth.

B.To avoid making people around her uncomfortable.
4、What does the underlined word “it” in the last sentence mean

24.(8 分) Nine years ago, a few days before Christmas, I was a director at a company in San Francisco, and I
was called into a meeting that was already in progress. That meeting turned out to be my exit interview. I was 64 years
old at the time. It wasn’t completely unexpected. I signed a pile of papers and left the company.
So, 40 plus years of employment was over. I had a good reputation and background. Retirement was not a choice for me. I wanted to do something. And then an idea came into my mind, born from my concern for our environment. I wanted to build my own business, designing and producing biodegradable(可生物降解的)packaging from waste. This is called clean technology, and it was really meaningful to me. It could help reduce billions of pounds of single-use plastic packaging wasted each year.
Five years later, I’m delighted and proud to share with you that our income has doubled every year and we have no debt. Meanwhile, I have a wonderful partner, and we’ve won more than 20 awards for the work that we’ve done.
And I am doing the most rewarding and meaningful work of my life right now. But what I really long for is to find other first-time entrepreneurs(企业家)who are my age. I want to connect with them.
So I want to do something about that in a few years. I want us to start talking more about people whodon’t become
entrepreneurs until they are seniors. And then connecting all of them across industries, regions and countries—building a community.
1、What happened to the author nine years ago
He retired from his former company. C.He had a good family background.

It provided jobs for lots of people.
It brought in quite a lot of money.

To do something else about environment.
To help people who want to become successful.
To meet more people from different backgrounds.
To build a community for senior entrepreneurs.
25.(10 分)The “Take In” restaurant in Helsinki, Finland, is currently in the news for its ingenious(有独创

But here’s the idea behind it—when you go out with a group of friends and you can’t decide where to go fordinner, because everyone wants to order something else, Take In is the perfect solution.
“We want to be a living room in the city,” a Wolt spokesperson told Monocle magazine. “We all know what it’s like
you’re about to go out for dinner with a big group of friends. Everyone wants to order what they like. What are you going to do Well, the answer in Helsinki right now is you come to Take In because you can do all of those things in the same place.”
Customers are more than welcome to stick to the selection of drinks available at the bar. But if they want to try the
“take in” experience, all they have to do is use the Wolt app, just as they would from the comfort of their own homes. Once they order and pay for their meals, all they have to do is wait for someone to deliver it to the pop-up restaurant. 1、What does the text mainly tell about

Nobody could have failed to notice the fact that drunk driving has become a grave problem what we are faced with. Reports are often heard about deaths result from drunk driving.
A number of factor might have led to this problem. First, Chinese have the custom of urging guests to drink more
and regard them as a sign of hospitality. Secondly, the boom of Chinese economy in the past decades brought along a sharp increase in the number of private cars. Lastly, laws and regulations were not severely enough in the past.
For our relief, relevant laws and regulations have been put into the effect to punish those who drives after drinking. And more can be done to avoid drunk driving until things get worse.

第二节 书面表达(满分 25分)
29、Dear Peter,
I’m very glad to know that you have interest in Chinese novels. There are so many famous novels written in
Chinese, including classical novels and modem novels, among which I like A Dream of Red Mansions most. It is an
interesting novel and is excellent beyond comparison. Based on Jia and Lin’s love story, it describes a tragedy about love
and the decline about a big family, which exposes the social crisis.
The book is written in old Chinese, which is difficult to understand. So when you read it, you’d better get a Chinese
dictionary ready for reference. In addition, I suggest that you should know some background knowledge about Qing
Dynasty. I wish you would have fun and learn something through readily it.
Yours,
Li Hua
