Mash Assadollat was the grocer at our corner store. Standing behind his glass display case, he tore out some pages from a book, filled them with sugar cubes and tea and weighed them one by one on a brass tray (托盘) on the left side of his scale. Then, he folded the wrappers closed and handed it to me. I paid him and left. I got home, took the goods and emptied the wrappers.
Having not much to do in my summer vacation, I started to read the wrappers, which had once been pages of a book. How well written and attractive the words were! It was a good story. I sat there until I had read all the pages. Honestly, I had never read a book before, except for my textbooks. But when I read all eight pages, I realized that how I loved reading. The only problem was that the story stopped right at the best part, which was the most important and exciting part in the story.
I decided to get the rest of the book to satisfy my curiosity. I ran to the corner. “Hello, sir.” I gasped breathlessly. I tried speaking politely. “Where is the rest of that book Could you please kindly give it to me I’ll read it and bring it right back to you.” “What book I don’t have any books in my shop.” Mash Assadollat furled his eyebrows and asked.
I tried to be convincing. “The one that you tore pages from and then used the pages to wrap sugar cubes and tea! Please I beg you to tell me what you did with that book!” The old man frowned in surprise and disbelief. “What do you want with the rest of the book ” “Sir, I just want to see what happens in the end.”
To butter him up, I removed one of the trays of his scale, brushed the sugar off outside by the wall, wiped the tray really well with my right sleeve, and then put it back in its place. However, Mash Assadollah brushed me off lightly. “Go away, kid, and let me get back to work. That book is no good for you.”

47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给悄节,使之构成—个完整的故事。
Mary a eight-year girl, whose father was tho keeper of a lighthouse on the coast of England, was always being told that the lamps can avoid lots of tragedies. The light of these lamps shines at night to guide ships on their way and to keep them from dangerous rocks and shoals.
One afternoon Mary was in the lighthouse alone. Mary's father had prepared the lamps, hanging high on the wall, and they were ready for lighting when evening came. As he needed to buy some food, he crossed the causeway which led to the land. This causeway was a path over the rocks and sands, which could be used only two or three hours in the day; at other times, the waters rose and covered it. The father intended to come back home before the tide (lowed over this path. Night was coming on, and a storm was rising on the sea.
Mary's mother was dead, and although she was alone, her father had told the girl not to be afraid, for he would soon return. Now there were some rough-looking men behind a rock, who were watching Mary's father. They watched him go to the land. They were”wreckers” who hid about the coast. If a ship was driven on the rocks by a storm, they rushed down—not to help the sailors, but to rob them.
The wicked men knew that a little girl was left alone in the lighthouse, so they planned to keep her father on the shore all night When Mary's father came back near the road leading to the causeway, the wreckers rushed from their hiding place and threw him on the ground. They quickly wrapped him up with all kinds of things. They then left him in the charge of two men, while they ran back to the shore. At the same time, the storm was raging with almost hurricane force.
“Oh, Mary, what will you do ” the father cried anxiously as he lay in the shed. “There will be no one to light the lamps. Ships may be wrecked, and sailors may be lost."

The perfect Christmas Tree
In our house in Middle Cove, Newfoundland, the tradition was to find the perfect tree before Christmas Eve. And this year, my brother Gilbert and I were being trusted to do it entirely on our own. And we took the challenge very seriously. So, axe in Gilbert’s hand, saw in mine, we set out for all the spots we imagined we might find a magnificent fir (冷杉树).
We were young, but we knew the rules. Trees could not be taken from personal land and not near any road.
We started out with the best of intentions. We were on Pine River Lane, and looking at the firs in the fields, but none of them looked quite good enough. It was getting dark but we still had no luck. On the way home, it was Gilbert who stopped, grabbed my arm and said, “I see it!”
“You see what ” I said.
“Right there, look. It’s perfect.”
And he was right. It was a young tree two metres tall, standing alone. It was the classic Christmas tree. In all my years, I had never seen such a perfect one.
Perfect except for one small problem. The tree was pretty close to the road. Also, it was behind a fence, so the tree was in someone’s yard. And not just any someone. It was in the yard of Timmy Green, my best friend.
However, the chances of our finding another one like it were slim to none.
“You stand guard,” Gilbert said. And with that, we were over the fence and on our bellies crawling toward the target. I lay in the snow and put the Greens’ house under surveillance (监视). I was to whistle or cough if I saw anyone coming.
Within a few minutes, it fell.
“Grab the end,” Gilbert said, and we lifted it over the fence. Now we were on the road.

As an enthusiastic climber, I would make an annual trip to the peak of Mount of the Holy Cross. This year, my new running partner, Merle—a young and athletic dog—would climb with me. I hadn’t thought twice about taking Merle; actually, I’d expected him to beat me to the peak.
Before setting off, I filled my pack with water bottles, dry food, and a can of fish. Having put the collar—with his name and my phone numbers—on Merle, I started my big adventure with him. Several hours later, when we were rushing towards the peak, Merle still seemed energetic and I also felt energized by the clear mountain air.
When reaching the peak, I heard a short bark but thought Merle would be seconds behind me. He was always incredibly bonded to me. I shot a photo of the view, called out to the dog and headed back down the trail. However, Merle was nowhere to be seen.
“Merle! Merle!” I called. “Where are you ” I felt a tickle of panic in my throat as I still saw no signs of him.
Then I saw something moving in the basin below. It was Merle! After nearly an hour, I made it to the basin and saw Merle standing on a large rock. Relief washed over me. Soon, I was close enough to see that he looked oddly swollen and was badly injured. When I got within a few feet of him, he dived into a crack at the edge of a field of rocks.
I immediately struggled to clear snow and rocks, but could only stick my head in the crack. Peering into the darkness, I just heard the rings of Merle’s collar. I yelled. No response. Then I went to the scene of the fall and saw the path Merle had taken: He’d slid some 700 feet down the upper snowfield, fallen off a 40-foot cliff, and then rolled down another 100-foot cliff to the lower snowfield.
“It’s typical of a dog in great pain to hide who is on the edge of dying.” My vet’s words flashed across my mind.

第二节 读后续写
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The Saturday before Christmas, 1 o’clock a.m., I was heading for a bird-watching site a few hours north. The weather forecast called for the possibility of fog, but the drive down was clear.
As I approached the destination, the fog began to build. At a bend, I hit a road shoulder and lost control of the truck. I tried to correct, but it was too late. With a clang, the back of my truck went over a steep bank and slid down to the water. There was a series of flashes, clicks, and whirs before all lights and electronics went out. I prayed that the water wasn’t deep.
At first, the scene seemed peaceful, almost beautiful. In the dim light, I could barely make out that I was in a large canal floating gently downstream and spinning slowly. I tried to open the door, but it was locked. The water had shorted the electrical system.
I remembered I had a glass breaker. It was in the centre console (仪表盘). I grabbed the tool and gave the passenger window a sharp hit, but the breaker merely bounced off. I hit it again, with the same result. I tied a two-handed swing but only managed to scratch the window.
With each failed attempt, the urgency of my situation built. Water gathered at my feet. I lay down on the seat and tried to kick out the window, but my feet just bounced off. By this point, the truck was mostly submerged (淹没) and the water was pushing against the window. Inside, the water level was over the seat, and cold water soaked my back and neck.
If I could reach my toolbox behind the seat, surely I would find the tool to break the window. I dived for it, with objects floating around me: a plastic bottle, a foldable windshield cover, a small pillow. The inside of my truck had become a giant snow globe, and I was trapped in it.

【答案】Paragraph 1: He was a hard nut to crack and couldn’t be softened easily. But I was persistent. I grabbed a cloth, trying to wipe the dust on the tray. I wanted to make sure that Mash Assadollah could see my good deed. However, the tray slipped out of my hand surprisingly, making everything messed up. “What are you doing, kid ” He was so angry that I almost melted with embarrassment. He roared, “Are you a total idiot Who told you to do any chores for me ” In tension, I felt my palms sweating and didn’t what to do.
Paragraph 2: Suddenly, my guilt was overcome by an idea. Having picked up the sugar cubes, I recommended myself politely, “Sir, your sugar cubes and tea are always my favourite. I guarantee that they will be well received this summer if I promote them to my friends and neighbours!” Overwhelmed by my sincerity and wits, he sighed, taking out a worn-out book. I clenched it to my chest, wild with joy and couldn’t wait to read it. (155 words)

【答案】Mary looked from a narrow window toward the shore, thinking it was time for her father to return. The wind roaring, it must be a stormy night. Outside the narrow window was a dark night dotted with dim lights from ships. It’s too gloomy, so neither the wreckers nor Mary’s father can be seen. Mary felt quite worried, her heart fiercely pumping as the sea level rose. “Where are you, dad ” Though concerning about sailors’ safety, she couldn’t do anything alone with the lamp hanging high on the wall. But when she saw more and more ships approaching the causeway and sailors struggling against the hurricane on the deck, Mary recalled her father’s duty and made up her mind. It suddenly occurred to her that her father put the scaffold behind the door with which she could reach out the lamp.
Eventually, Mary lighted the lamp. At once, the luminous light of the lamps from the lighthouse was cast over the sea, illuminating the world in just a second. Sailors gratefully followed the light and anchored off close to the shore. It was then that they discovered Mary’s father was in great trouble. A crowd of them successfully landed, rushing quickly and anxiously towards the causeway to save her father. And where were the wreckers Of course they had escaped. As soon as the lights came on, they knew the plan was shattered.

【答案】One possible version:
Para.1: Suddenly Gilbert’s eyes widened. “Our footprints!” he said. Sure enough, all around the base of the stump were footprints. Boys’ footprints. We might as well have left a signed note. Suddenly, an idea occurred to me and I patted Gilbert on the shoulder and signaled him to climb over the fence. Together we got down on all fours and wiped away our footprints with great effort. All was done! And as expected, what greeted us back home was enormous praise for the perfect tree. Satisfied as I was, the idea of being caught “stealing” the tree kept lingering in my mind. However, nobody came around and asked questions. It seemed the Greens had never noticed the missing of their property.
Para.2: So it shocked me when I found Mr Green in our house with my parents, drinking tea on Christmas Eve. A ripple of fear crept inside before I finally made it to look up at Mr Green’s eyes and forced a smile. It so happened that Dad was proudly introducing the Christmas tree. “It’s a pity I’ll never have one like that.” Mr Green spoke of his tree in the yard which was nurtured for Christmas with lowered eyes. Cocooned in overwhelming guilt, I kept up courage and stuttered my apologies. Mr Green, shocked at first, nodded smilingly after learning the whole thing. Stroking the delicately decorated tree, I came to realize that not only did I find the perfect Christmas tree, but also retrieved the best in me, which was, is and will be carved in my memory.

【答案】参考范文一
I returned to the crack and called his name again. Still no response. I opened the can of fish and left them as a lure at the mouth of the crack, but in vain. Inside, it smelled wet, just like death. I spent another hour crouching outside the cave, until the jingle of the collar and Merle’s deep breathing stopped. My possible carelessness gnawed at me. But worried about losing daylight, I packed up, crossed the basin and found my way home.
Three weeks later; I received a call claiming to have found Merle. I couldn’t believe my ears. I immediately charged into the car to pick him up. When I heard the familiar bark, I knew that my “lost” friend was back! I collapsed to the floor as soon as I saw him, gently stroking his skinny body. He lowered his ears, tucked in his tail, and wiggled onto my lap. Over the next week, Merle recovered beautifully. I now fully believe in that we are incredibly bonded to each other.
参考范文二
I returned to the crack and called his name again. Still desperate silence! Overwhelmed with great panic, I tried frantically to find a way down to the crack. But no luck. What’s worse, the sun was setting, and I was not prepared to spend the night outside. If only I hadn’t taken Merle with me! Realizing however hard I tried, I would never make it, I had to give up. Before leaving, I left the fish at the mouth of the crack, hoping Merle would survive.
Three weeks later; I received a call claiming to have found Merle. It was from a local vet, who accidentally noticed Merle in the mountain and found it had a collar on. Excitement washing over me, I immediately set off for the reunion with Merle. When I arrived, the vet expressed his surprise that Merle should survive in such great pain. Stroking his bony body, I knew that it was the bond between Merle and me that brought my friend back.

第二节
While struggling with the toolbox, my hand hit the fire extinguisher by accident. I grasped and used ii to break the window. The extinguisher, too, merely bounced off the glass. The water level had risen. I experienced a moment of fear bordering on panic. But I knew I had to carry on. In the following time, I swung the extinguisher underwater, went above the water to gulp air, and then dived down and took as many swings as my breath would allow, with the only hope of weakening the window through repeated impact. I didn’t know how long it lasted, but suddenly the impact felt different. I extended my left hand and felt a hole in the window. I’m going to live! I used the tool to break away the rest of the glass and swam out of the truck.
I swam for shore and tried To climb up the side of the canal. The bank was wet and slippery and I noticed multiple cuts in my fingers from ripping the door open, all of which made climbing up extremely difficult. A part of me just wanted to give up. My life flashed before my eyes. I thought of all the people I’d known, the experiences I’d had, and the experiences I would never have. It took all my remaining willpower to scream at the top of my lungs. Incredibly, someone responded. Two birdwatchers spotted me and dragged me onto the bank of the canal with the help of a rope. Finally the sun peeked over the horizon, the fog lifted and my rescuers called in an ambulance. Though embarrassed about losing control of my vehicle, I’m pleased that I didn’t panic as I went through the problem-solving process.
