This August, Chongqing had a very hard time. It experienced a record-breaking heat and the highest temperatures on most days were above 40℃. Because of the awfully hot and dry weather, large forest fires happened in many parts of the city.
Firefighters made great efforts to bring the fires under control, but they were not the only heroes. In Beibei District, a large number of motorcyclists (摩托车手) played an important role and won widespread praise.
Li Xin is the owner of a motorcycle club in Beibei District. After hearing the government’s call for volunteers, he organized a team of 15 club members to support the firefighting in Xiema Town, the centre of the local fires. “It is my honor and duty (责任) to guard my hometown,” he said.

There were hundreds of motorcyclists like Li. Most of them were in their twenties. They rode on the poor mountain roads, each carrying a large basket full of supplies (补给品) on their back. Some fell and got hurt even though they had the best motorcycle skills. Some got heatstroke (中暑) after working long hours continuously. Zhuojuema, a girl from Sichuan Province, has been trying to protect Tibetan black pottery (藏族黑陶) over the past few years. The 21-year-old started learning the skills of making black pottery from her teacher in a training centre six years ago.
Tibetan black pottery has a history of over 1,000 years, but it was once in danger of disappearing. Zhuojuema couldn’t find complete historical records about the craft (工艺) at first. So she and her partners decided to write some materials about the craft by themselves. However, it was a big challenge for them. To get more information, they looked through many history books, collected black pottery from door to door and talked with some craftsmen.
The pottery is completely hand-made without any modern tools Highland barley (青稞) is used to fire pottery, leading to an unusual chemical reaction (化学反应) with the clay (陶土) from local mountains. That’s why the pottery becomes black in the end. Firing pottery is a really important part of the process. The size and shape of the pottery have much to do with the time and temperature of heating.
To make more people enjoy this craft, Zhuojuema and her partners have made some changes. For example, they use the polishing (抛光) craft to process the pottery, making it more attractive. They also create small things, such as teapots and teacups, to make the pottery more useful in people’s daily lives.
