As the old Chinese saying goes,“Humanity's most fundamental① relationship is with what we eat.”
Although food has played an important part in② Chinese culture for years,hunger had been a huge problem in the country until the 1970s.
However,the Chinese scientist Yuan Longping helped to fix③ this problem.
Yuan devoted himself to conducting research on④ rice in his life. In 1964, he discovered a natural hybrid (杂交的) rice plant. Then, he focused on developing high yield (高产的) hybrid rice varieties. These varieties now account for⑤ about two thirds of China's rice crop, according to China News.So, it's no wonder that he's known as the “Father of Hybrid Rice”.
And thanks to China's Belt and Road Initiative⑥,Yuan's hybrid rice is helping to solve food problems around the world.Indeed, according to Xinhua News Agency, hybrid rice plants in Kenya produce four to five times more rice than the country's regular rice plants.
On Sept.8, 2018, Yuan, together with⑦ two other scientists, won China's 2018 Future Science Prize for his continuous⑧research on rice.
On the eve of the 70th anniversary⑨ of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the 90 year old agricultural scientist was awarded⑩ the Medal of the Republic for his work on producing a hybrid variety of rice that has a much higher yield of grain.
Despite his great knowledge,Yuan understood that even the wisest people should still be open to new things.“The farmers of our country possess rich experience in planting rice,” he said.“We should learn from them.”

The Well that Changed the World
As a six year old Canadian schoolboy, Ryan had trouble believing① the words spoken by his teacher that many people in developing African countries couldn't get enough clean water. He looked across the classroom at the drinking fountain②. It was very close—only ten steps away. So, Ryan asked himself, “Why do some African children have to walk ten kilometres to get water every day?[1] And why is the water so dirty that it makes them sick?” Young Ryan thought, “Life is easy for me, but hard for those people. Why don't I help?”
