Unit 5 What an adventure!
续写练习重点——五感描写动物
Ⅰ 外刊输入——悟语言之道
Money Doesn't Buy Happiness
As part of the environmental group on campus, my friends and I recently invited a recent college graduate, Colin Davis, an ambassador of the environmental protection campaign to lecture on the basis of his initiatives (倡议) in climate change.
Davis graduated from Trinity College last spring. He set aside the tempting internship (实习期) from Goldman Sachs that thousands of people dream about. Davis eventually chose to ride a bike across the US to interview environmental experts.
Davis wasn't a born environmentalist. As a matter of fact, it all happened by accident. At first, to be honest, David intended to justify his bike ride, naming it after a good cause. In that case, the cause was climate change. But Davis became more concerned than ever about this issue after the cross country bike ride. He read hundreds of books on climate change and environmental consulting and found it his duty to make his own contributions. Now, he works for non profit organizations and serves as a consultant for energy efficiency.
During his lecture, he described his obligations in details. What impressed me most was one of his messages—shopping with a moral in mind.
Facing two similar products in a market, do we stop and read the back before throwing the product into our cart Indeed, we all live in a fast paced society, but it doesn't mean that we shouldn't take a minute to choose a product that's safer for our bodies and better for the environment. Just be patient. What Davis indicated is that it is important to be a smart consumer, by supporting organic food and green products instead of only looking at the brands.
With little age gap and his unique manner of presenting serious messages in a light tone, Davis captured the attention of all the students. Davis said, “Working for a good cause makes me feel better than being an investment banker.”
After his lecture, I, together with a lot of my classmates, am more than willing to devote ourselves to maintain the balance of our environment by spending money wisely, because money cannot buy happiness, as well as our environment.

【典题精析】
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mrs. Sommers one day found herself the unexpected owner of fifteen dollars. It seemed to her a very large amount of money. For a day or two, she walked around in a dreamy state as she thought about her choices. Her daughter Janie was wearing worn shoes and needed new ones. She would buy cloth for new shirts for the boys. Her daughter Mag should have another dress. And still there would be enough left for new stockings for her children. The idea about how to spend the dollars made her restless with excitement.
On the day she planned to go shopping with the money, she ate a light meal—no!Between getting the children fed and the house cleaned, and preparing herself to go shopping, she forgot to eat at all!
When she arrived at the large department store, she spotted a pile of silk stockings at the entrance. A sign nearby announced that they had been reduced in price. A young girl behind the counter asked her if she wished to examine the silky stocking. She smiled as if she had been asked to inspect diamond jewelry, and started to feel the soft and expensive items. Mrs. Sommers picked up a black pair and looked at them closely. Two red marks suddenly showed on her pale face. She looked up at the shop girl and said proudly, “Well, I will buy this pair.”
Mrs. Sommers changed her cotton stockings for the new silk ones in the ladies' rest area. She had let herself be controlled by some machine like force that directed her actions and freed her of responsibility. How good was the touch of the silk on her skin! Then she put her shoes back on and put her old stockings into her bag. Next, she went to the shoe department, where she tried on a pair of new boots. Her foot and ankle looked lovely. She could not believe that they were a part of herself.

Hearing the shop assistant's introduction, her heart was filled with excitement. After a careful search, she was drawn by a dress with lace. Encouraged by the admiration she received, Mrs. Sommers couldn't wait to share her happiness with the children.
She was about to leave the store when a kid running around reminded her of something. It suddenly occurred to her that she hadn't bought anything for the children. How could she forget that In a hurry, she searched in her bag the list she made. It read, “New shoes for Janie. New shirts for the boys. Another dress for Mag. New stockings for the children.” Her cheeks were burning with shame. How could she be selfish She immediately rushed back to the department store, returned what she bought and purchased what the children needed.
