Ⅰ 外刊输入——悟语言之道
Imagining Tomorrow Today
Perhaps no one knows the power of imagination better than Chinese sci fi writer Liu Cixin, the author of The Three Body Problem. Initially, Liu worked full time as a computer engineer at a power plant in Yangquan, Shanxi Province. He only wrote science fiction in his spare time. But it was during this time that Liu's imagination took flight. He had the chance—imaginatively—to do what he could not do in real life—wander in space, fight with aliens, and visit planets light years away.
But even with so powerful an imagination, it is beyond his wildest dream that he became the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, science fiction's highest prize, in 2015.
In his acceptance speech, Liu declared that he owed his imagination to Arthur C. Clarke (1917-2008), a famous UK sci fi author. He said that reading Clarke's 1968 classic novel 2001:A Space Odyssey (《2001:太空漫游》) in the early 1980s had a great effect on him. “My mind opened up like never before. It felt more like a narrow stream finally embracing (融入) the sea.”
Liu's imagination may sound ridiculous, whereas somehow his novels always stay grounded (理性的).
For example, Liu tells of aliens invading Earth. But unlike other alien human conflict stories, Liu's tale is about relationships between civilizations, rules of survival, and the meaning of life. It looks ahead to the day when our solar system will end and humans have to look for a new place to live. However, all his presumptions and solutions are on a “hard science”basis instead of simply daydreams.
The Chinese sci fi movie, The Wandering Earth, also reflects this idea. In the film, Earth is in danger of being destroyed by the dying sun. In response, humans around the world test out ways together to build a giant engine system that will push Earth away from the sun. Instead of abandoning Earth, this time we're taking it with us.
It turns out that this “ambition” didn't come from nowhere. For thousands of years, “homeland” has been calculated as soft spot in the hearts and minds of Chinese people, as expressed in the old idiom luoyeguigen (落叶归根). Or look at an ancient verse (诗句): “The season called the White Dew begins tonight/Nowhere as in our native place is the moon so bright (露从今夜白,月是故乡明).” This special cultural background is probably what sets The Wandering Earth apart from Hollywood style space films.
This distinct urge also entrusts new meaning to the story: Earth goes wherever humans go, because it's our home.

When she looked around her house, Betty Margaret saw lots of electronics. Along with the usual things like her laptop and smart phone, there were all of her kids' electronic devices: cell phones, video game devices and more! There seemed to be more than enough ways for her and her three children to be online all day, every day.
Ms. Margaret worried that her kids were becoming too dependent on the Internet and electronics. Then she began to reread one of her favorite books, Henry Thoreau's Walden, which gave Ms. Margaret an idea. Thoreau spent 2 years in a simple cabin without running water, and had to grow his own food. Maybe she and her family could live without such luxuries as computers and electronic devices for a while.
Ms. Margaret talked with her kids and explained that she wanted the family to try living for 6 months without Internet, cell phones, TV, and video games. Ms. Margaret writes articles for a newspaper in Australia, and had written several books as well. She told her children that if they agreed, she would write a book about their experience and they could go on a trip abroad with the money from sales of the book. Her three children agreed, and “ the experiment” as Ms. Margaret called, began.
Over the course of the experiment, the Margarets' children had different reactions to life without electronics. Before the experiment began,Anni, the eldest of the children, read books more than her younger brother and sister. She therefore had a relatively easy adjustment to the family's new lifestyle. Anni could also use the library's computer for her homework. Bill, who loved to play video games before the experiment began, had to find a way to spend all of his new free time. He started to spend more time practising his saxophone(萨克斯). Susan, the youngest child in the family, had the hardest time adjusting to life without electronics. She felt restless for the first weeks and later, influenced by her elder sister, gradually began to find interest in the novel experiences brought by various books.

One day, wearing a mysterious smiles, Ms. Margaret announced the big news that they had come to the end of “the experiment”. To her great surprise, the three children remained quite calm. Neither did they jump up nor rush to fetch their beloved smart phones. Instead, Anni and Susan were still sitting there, deeply absorbed in their books respectively. Bill looked up, shrugged and said, “Saxophone has won my overall interest. Every day I gain a great sense of achievement.” Upon hearing this, a surge of satisfaction flew through the mother's heart. She was sure that she had made the right decision. Inspired by the peaceful atmosphere, she devoted herself to writing her new book, named Experiment—Which will lead your children from good to better. The instant it came out, it became a hit.
The vivid description of their true and funny experience toward the new lifestyle undeniably contributed to the hit of the book. It dawned on a number of parents to follow suit and guide their own children to a more reasonable and sensible way when approaching electronic devices. Sometimes, punishment is not the only way out. What the children need is the proper guidance and active involvement. It is this meaningful experience that highlights everything good outside of the virtual world to them! By the way, the Margarets' children also were rewarded with an unforgettable trip to the places that were contained in books they read during the last 6 months. It not only gave the kids the sweet taste of reading books, but also helped them discover a new dimension of life.
